This is our first attempt at counter top composing and smell has not been a problem. We feel that is because of these filters. Working great!

I keep the pail on the counter top and this keeps any decay smells at bay.
They're 5 stars because the fit my kitchen compost container
No one sells them locally and these fit my ceramic kitchen compost container. The only down side is that if that's all you need they're very pricey by the time you add in shipping and handling but I have found a way to make them last longer. If you over fill your kitchen container your food scraps will contaminate your carbon filter and with the liquid that forms at the bottom you can have mold forming in no time. Everyone wants to be a conscientious environmentalist but that requires two things: don't overfill you kitchen container to the point that the contents contact the filter and empty it frequently. If you do your kitchen won't smell like a garbage can every time you open it. I've develop a successful practice of emptying it every other day and never filling it over 3/4 full. The filters last a lot longer this way.

These do the job well and last a long time..
Does the job
Started composting again recently and ordered these filters for the crock I'd ordered in the past. They do exactly what's needed, eliminating odors until the lid is opened. They arrived on time.
Keeps out smells well
The trick here is to not let your compost bin get too full and touch the filter. Still, it will get moldy in time. If you catch it early, just wash it with dish soap and rinse, let dry. Can even be washed (but not dried) in a machine. They seem expensive but if you take care of them two will last a year.
I will buy this again.

I would buy this product again, only one, caveat
from Houghton, New York
We have use of this product since buying our compost can and found it thanks a lot for keeping odors out of our kitchen. my one caveat: it seems that fruit flies breed in the filter. Any help with this problem would be welcome.
