What is the difference between pruners and loppers?

Bypass pruners work like scissors- they have two blades that pass by each other. Bypass pruners work by slicing and are best when the plant material being cut is live rather than brittle.

What are anvil pruners?

Anvil pruners have one blade and one flat surface- which creates more of a chopping rather than a slicing mechanism- and are better for dead, frail material. The longer your handle (loppers vs handheld), the more leverage, and you'll be able to cut larger branches with less exertion.

How do I sharpen a pruner?

A dull blade makes rough cuts, leaving plants more vulnerable to disease. Pruners that are kept clean and dry will not need to be sharpened as often. For moderate to heavy use, sharpening every 6 weeks should suffice, though the hobbyist gardener may even be able to go a full year in between sharpenings. If you are having trouble cutting cleanly, you can sharpen it sooner. One may be able to find a local handyperson or store with the experience to sharpen tool blades, or you can watch some tutorials on trying it yourself. Some tool brands have removable blades that can be easily replaced if needed.
