It's no bother composting kitchen scraps when you have this convenient tumbler near the back door. Our compact composter is sized just right to handle food scraps, and with a few quick spins, turn them into rich garden gold. When your compost is ready, just wheel it out to the garden. The big hinged door makes access easy. Tubular steel frame has rust-resistant powder coating.

I've had mine for 15 years and it's still going strong

Comments about Back Porch Compost Tumbler:
I ordered my composter in 2005-6 from Gardener's Supply. I don't remember having a problem assembling it. The only downside is that I need another one to have one cooking and one to use over the summer and winter. We live in Oregon's high dessert so our winters are cold with February warm spells. Come fall cleanup, the composer is packed with bean vines, squash plants, rhubarb leaves and what is left inedible in my organic vegetable garden. I add egg shells, coffee grounds and a few leaves. I also compost cardboard when I need dry matter in the summer. Over the winter, it works its magic. Glad to see GS has brought this item back. I do not move mine around. It stays stationary on the side of the house. Was surprised to read negative comments.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Wanted to love this composter, but it just doesn't hold up

About Me Getting Started
We purchased this item several years ago and over time both the plastic and steel have broken down. The composter won't spin since the plastic drum and center spindle are broken and it cannot be wheeled as the steel frame has rusted through completely. We have to hire someone to demolish it and drag the parts away. We live in SE Texas so we get lots of heat, sun and rain. Things don't last forever here, but the cost of this item, and the time it took to put it together make it not worth the purchase. Purchase something else if you have any sort of weather that causes plastic or metal to break down.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Will eventually break

I have two of these compost tumblers and have had them for a few years. This summer on both tumblers, the spot where the frame and the tumbler meet stretched open and the tumbler pulled away from the frame. There is no fixing it and so there is no more tumbling. I see on other compost tumblers that they are using a metal piece to strengthen this area probably because this becomes an issue with the weight and the tumbling. I now have two broken tumblers.
Highly recommend this product!

Reduces the amount of trash we put out & is the best so soil preparation in the spring for our vegetable garden

This compost tumbler is the perfect size for smaller yards. With the attached wheels you can bring the compost to where it is needed which is a plus. If you are not an experienced composter the instructions give guidance and recipes for a successful compost.
Useful and compact enough for our back deck, but ...

Everything is great about this composter EXCEPT the time it took to assemble. And the manufacturer's quality control was sadly inadequate. Certain parts did not have the tabs indicated on the directions. We'd recommend it ONLY to people, like us, that have extensive assembly experience and can figure out work-around solutions.

We bought two, and had to take each one back apart because the alignment of the door section with the aeration holes is critical, and the instructions were not clear. The holes for the screws of the sides to the container did not align very well. But so far they work pretty well, they rotate easily and the compost is cooking.
Even a 75 year old can put it together

This has worked reasonably well, although it does smell and it composts slowly. First, though, the wheels fell off from the weight. Then the metal frame rusted. And now, the plastic connection to the frame has broken making the composter no longer airtight. We'll be replacing with a different model. I'd recommend with reservations. It will get you started on composting.
Compact and convenient

I love my back porch compost tumbler! Actually, I have two! I use them for all my kitchen scraps, leaves, plant trimmings, coffee grounds, etc. They are easy to turn for aeration (no need for turning with pitch fork). When one is filled, I start filling the second one. That way I always have compost for my garden. They are small enough to be unobtrusive but large enough to produce a decent amount of compost. Also, the wheels allow me to roll the compost tumblers closer to where I will be using the finished compost. I highly recommend this compost tumbler.
