An ordinary flat hoe — the only kind you see in most garden centers — is good for moving and smoothing soil. For weeding, though, the Hula Hoe (also called a stirrup hoe or scuffle hoe) is a far better tool for the job. The sharp steel blade skims horizontally below the soil surface, slicing through weed roots while leaving the soil in place. The blade is designed to have a little play in it — the famous "hula wiggle" — so that it cuts at the correct angle on both backward and forward strokes.

My Husband is doing all the weeding
from Stockton, CA
My husband loves the hoe so much that he is doing most of the weeding. I come along later and pick up the large pieces and pull the ones too close to a plant to be hoed. I love this tool!

I like the Hula Hoe a lot. I wish I'd purchased one sooner. It works great on those areas of my yard that are particularly hard and dry. It gets weeds and moss up with little effort.
This has made it so much easier to weed.

I use my hula hoe between and around my plants. Last year I was on my hands and knees weeding my garden, this year the hulahoe has made is much easier.

Best garden tool ever!
from Mankato, MN
This type of hoe was recommended by a local master gardener as the best way to deal with weeds in your garden so I bought one. She was so right! I love it! It's much faster than a standard hoe and it cuts the weed seedlings off just below the surface of the soil so it doesn't bring a bunch of new weed seeds up to germinate.

This is a great tool for taking care of a lot of the small weeds that clutter up things in the spring. Has been a great thing to use in the early spring and then put down your mulch or compost after you've got this done
