Great Idea, Very Poor Quality
from Lancaster, CA
Comments about : Cold Frame For VegTrug™:
I purchased my Trug from Gardener's Supply Co approx 8 years ago. I also purchased the multiple covers for the Trug prior to purchasing the Cold Frame. I loved everything until the Cold Frame! Putting it together was a bit of a challenge as very few of the pieces fit well and the wood is very poor quality and splits easily. My husband is a building contractor by trade, so I was surprised he had problems putting the cold frame together. Once together, some of the wood had split and the frame was fragile. Once installed on the Trug, the fit was poor, but we shimmed it up for a tighter fit. I used the cover thru the season, but not without issue. The wood is very poor quality and continue to split, further compromising the strength of the unit. I have removed the cold frame and found it needs multiple repairs to hold the shape for storage. I am not sure it can function another season. The design is great, the quality of the wood is poor, making this a disappointing purchase. I would like to return it, but have no idea how to ship it back!

Needs a bit of modification
from Lake Junaluska, NC
We put the cold frame together and placed in on our trug but we needed a few upgrades: First, the large panels were slightly warped so after assembly we made a trip to the hardware store to purchase 8 hook & eye sets and installed them on the lower corners of each large plastic panel. Then, seeing that we still did not have a good seal we installed 1 inch weather stripping on 3 sides of the panels. Then, we had to re-drill and reset one of the receptors on one of the arm supports as it was installed on the wrong side of the panel. Finally, as a last improvement we used long wood screws to secure the cold frame to the trug for winter winds. Also, one plastic panel is bubbled, a bit unsightly but it does not affect usage. The frame is now working beautifully, holding herbs and lavender plants wintering over for spring planting. In the next couple of weeks, we plan to install a light bulb for greater warmth during the coldest winter months. So... I like it, it works, but it could use a few improvements. .

Good Greenhouse Cover for VegTrug
from Cobleskill, NY
I bought this because I wanted to help keep bugs out and extend the growing season a bit. It is a bit pricey but I felt it was worth the cost as it does look very nice on the VegTrug.Assembly was not that difficult but did take around 60-90 minutes. Instructions were pretty clear and easy to follow. Holes lined up fairly well so screws and such went in easily. The fit was pretty good on top of the VegTrug and it is fairly solid as well. The lids slide fairly easily.Overall I really am happy with this purchase as the cover will definitely extend the growing season and it really looks nice witht he VegTrug.I have been using this for about a year and the issues are really minor. The cover lids do tend to slide down a bit if you leave them in the raised position as they are held in the up position by a screw type knob that can slip. It would be nice to have a small handle on the outside of the cover lids but that would be easy enough to add on your own. Also you need to be careful what you put in the VegTrug when you have these attached; I had tomatoes and once they were full height the cover lids would not close. Might be nice to have an optional higher option cold frame cover offered by Gardener's Supply for such situations.
Very nice addition to the planters
By Obsessed gardener
Just bought to add to the planters, well made, I have no doubt that they will extend my harvest season
from Discovery Bay, Ca
I really like this product. The only thing that would make it better is to have some predrilled holes for watering system. Nothing against the product, just a suggestion for improvement.
Does not fit on the veg trug easily and the wind blewit off. the sides do not stay up very well either.

The cover doesn't line up with the trug, smaller. And will need to figure out how to fasten down. We have wind

Great investment !
from Upstate NY
This is awesome! I love the optional insect and plastic cover canapies to keep bugs and birds and insects out! Was thrilled to see an optional coldframe offered and jumped on buying it so I can start my seeds early. For those who lack common sense - the entry clearly reads 'cold frame' under 'accessories'. Please don't put faith in ignorant reviews.
