Good composter, terrible clips

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

I have been using this composter for more than 6 months, and it has been a sturdy unit that fits my needs well. I wanted to compost leaves in the fall, and it holds far more than I expected. I also add my plant-based kitchen waste and coffee grounds, and everything manages to stay inside the wire sides. The main problem is with the cheap plastic clips meant to assemble the four sides. Most of them broke during assembly, and those that didn't have broken on their own as it sat outside. I used zip-ties to hold the sides together, and they held it together very well.

I got this for my ground up oak leaves in the fall. It fits well where I wanted it, it was easy to assemble despite poor directions, and I think it will work out fine.

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

This works great for what I want..something to compost yard waste…tree branches, grass clippings, leaves, etc. I would not use it for pitch scraps as it is open and I'd be afraid to attract rodents. I have an enclosed black plastic one that I use for pitch scraps but had far too much yard waste for it and the enclosed ones are very pricey. These wire ones are still a lot for what they are, but easier than trying to put in stakes and using chicken wire. They look good and work great. Very easy to assemble although I did add zip ties just in case.

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

I have a tiny yard on a city lot and yet I attempt to compost as much as I can. I had been throwing brush and leaves into a giant pile along our back fence-much to my husbands dismay. These bins fit into the same space, but neatly contain the waste and hold more because they are tall. I burrow kitchen scraps in with the brush so my compact tumbler is no longer overwhelmed with new scraps. Turning and harvesting will likely be tricky, but it is worth the aesthetic improvement. I didn't realize until I saw the instructions (which include the 1 and 3 bin) that the 3 bin systems is 2 bins with connecting panels. If I had known this I would have bought the 3 bin system rather than buying 2 individual bins because of the added flexibility and nominal price difference.

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

This could have been a simpler and easier to set up and aerate composter. It would be improved by having stakes at the ground end of each section that press into the ground and with one side serving as a gate for easy access/turning/taking compost out. The connector gizmos seem like they will break easily.

This is the 2nd composter I've gotten from Gardener's Supply and both need help with design so it's easy to access/aerate the compost.

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

I'm delighted with this bin. I bought two and have them side by side. I covered each of the four sides (of each bin) with 1/4" wire mesh before I set them up to better hold the contents. I filled both of them with shredded leaves and grass, then watered thoroughly. That was last week. Now when I put hand down in them it's so hot that I have to pull my hand out. I turned them once with my pitchfork and they heated right back up.

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

I tried to assemble as instructed but 3 of the first 4 clips I tried to snap onto the wire sides snapped in half. I decided not to frustrate myself by using the rest of the clips. I will instead use pieces of fencing wire. The size is good for a smallish garden like mine and the mesh sides seem sturdy enough. We'll see how it goes throughout the season!

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

I bought two of these wire compost bins 10 years ago. They have held up great. Only issue over all these years is the center of the top and bottom of the bin should not be pulled on to move, it will break. We fixed that issue by wrapping with brass fittings (and not pulling on that area again). Other then that these bins have seen a lot of kitchen waste, garden debris, and leaves over 10 years. The last time I sifted my bins I was able to process 80 gallons of finished compost, and this was using the SLOW method of composting. Fortunately, when I bought my bins 10 years ago they came with metal spiral clips to hold together the sides, and they have lasted 10 years too.

Comments about Single Bin Wire Composter:

The wire bins are attractive and the wire panels themselves are quite sturdy. Once assembled the unit as a whole is also quite sturdy and both easy to fill and to reach in to turn the pile.

However, the plastic clips that one uses to assemble the panels are a little flimsy: I broke several trying to put the cage together because they are fairly brittle and yet have to be opened fairly wide to snap two panels together. Extra clips are shipped with the cage, so I had enough to finish -- but I won't be opening and closing the bins via the clips to remove compost because they're too fragile. So that's a pity as it'll be a bit harder to get the compost back out.
