This is the third year of using the mulch. While I haven't done any controlled studies (i.e. used the mulch on one plant and not used it on another), my three plants - Early Girl and Better Boy - produced 700 flavorful tomatoes the first year I used it. The plants were strong and required tomato towers to 6 feet to hold them up. I'm new to growing tomatoes and got lucky with a good garden spot, but I don't think I would have gotten this yield without the red plastic mulch.

This is a thin plastic sheet not a mulch. It still may work but I thought it would be some kind of pressed mulch. It really is just a red garbage bag. I still put it in and we will see what happens.

Unlike other mulches, the red tomato mulch stays in place (be sure to use landscaping pins!), does not blow about in the wind, and is weed-free. Pin it in place once and it is done for the season. Despite last year's drought, my tomatoes produced a bountiful crop.

I've placed the red mulch sheet under my tomatoes and pepper plants in a 4-foot raised bed, secured with earth staples. It has been in place now for about three weeks, through torrential rain, high winds, and temperatures that have fluctuated from 33 to 80 degrees. It's held up beautifully and looks just like when I installed it. I don't know if it will help promote tomato growth or ripening yet, but it has helped to cut down on weeding!

Last year I bought red tomato mulch from a different company and it did not let the rain water through. Gardner's red tomato mulch has small perforations that let moisture get to the soil.

We sometimes have cool weather in spring. My tomatoes have always thrived while neighbor's have sometimes failed. I am delighted that the product is now perforated. In the past I used to make my own perforations.

Maybe it was the drought last summer, but these red sheets only seemed to contribute to my tomato plants cooking in the heat. I used garden staples to hold them down, but when I didn't make it out quickly enough to take them up, they blew into the trees. :-( Only negative comment I've had about anything from Gardeners.com.
