Universal Sockets offer super-strong, in-ground anchors for fence posts, greenhouse hoops, garden structures and trellises. To install, simply insert the install bar, included, into the top of the socket and turn it to screw the socket into the ground. True to their name, Universal Sockets are extremely versatile and will accept round, square or triangle posts or poles from 7/8” diameter to 1-1/4” diameter. We suggest metal conduit, PVC or other garden stakes that are readily available at hardware stores and home centers. Each socket has a drainage hole, as well as a removable plastic cap to prevent debris build-up if you take down your fence or structure but leave the sockets in place over the winter. Set includes two Universal Sockets and one Install Bar.

Looks good on paper...
from Boston, Mass.
This deer control system has limited usefulness. I was initially optimistic, as the universal sockets appear to be strong and durable, and easily 'screw' into the ground. I supplied my own metal-reinforced plastic poles, heavy duty netting and zip ties, similar to what is offered in their system. Set-up went well, but our very first snowfall took the fence down. It was a heavy, sticky snow and adhered to the netting, adding so much weight that the poles bent over, the netting pulled the zip ties down the poles and the sockets became loose in the soil. Customer service responded immediately to my complaint, but was not aware of any fence testing that was conducted in wintery, snowy conditions. Gardener's Supply markets this as a 'super-strong, super-sturdy, effective deer fence'. In the south where snow is unlikely, maybe. Up north, no...unless one avoids it's use in the winter, which is exactly the time I have severe deer issues.

I wanted a deer fence around the garden in my back yard but only wanted the fence up during growing season. This product is the perfect solution, can easily take the fence down in the winter and leave the stakes in the ground. The stakes were very easy to put into the ground and feel very solid. Perfect solution!

Handy to Have Around
from Danvers MA
I had high hopes for these anchors. The are quick and easy to install and 6' green t-bar fence posts fit perfectly. I use them as trellis wire supports for blackberries and raspberries. I'm intending to use at 4' intervals to support 3 cordon wires for espalier fruit trees. Once the espalier branch has been trained to grow horizontally, they are really stronger than vertical branches so the espalier wires are more for 3-5 in training branches. I also plan to use these as supports for single cordon grape vines that I've now just planted. As for difficulty in getting into the ground - I pour water down the center. There's a hole in the end of each that i've bought so as water drains the surrounding soil softens which makes screwing them soundly into the earth possible. Time will tell how stable the are. I would have like a longer anchor.

I tried using these post holders in several locations in the back yard. They would screw into the soil about a third of the way in and then just spin as I kept trying to get them into the dirt. I had to dig holes in the ground and bury them to set posts.
