Bad design at too high a price.
This is a long overdue review. I bought three of these some years ago and almost immediately had problems. The hose holder is just a notch in the top, and the hose doesn't stay put, so you can easily loose a whole barrel full of water. The plastic nozzles quickly started leaking and eventually couldn't be closed. The overflow hose inside doesn't fit snugly on the escape valve, so that's another way to lose a barrel full. I'm amazed that the design appears to still be the same as when I bought them. They cost way too much, given the poor design and quality.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

About Me Getting Started
Not sure why interior hoses were not secured so that they don't detach during shipping. Haven't found a way to take barrel apart to make it easier to reattach interior hose located at bottom of the barrels so they will sit until I find someone to help reattach the hoses. Would love to chat with the person(s) involved in the design. The barrels are sturdy and look like they will last a long time, however. I recommend this with caution.
Long lasting barrels

I've had my barrels for years and added a third (different shape, size) and love them especially since we've been through years of record drought in the last ten years or more. The construction of the top makes the barrel difficult to clean and sometimes I wish I could just dip a small bucket out like I can with the third barrel with a twist off top. I've had problems with the cats wanting to lay on top so I had to add a covering of hardware cloth and screen wire to protect the top screen. Otherwise, I have had ample water saved and used over the years.
Bought one so I had to come back for two!

I have never had a problem with the rain barrels.

Happy with wide screen on top. Only drawback, wish top unscrewed to make it easier to clean out. Other than that, barrels are pretty near perfect.

Yes this is a bargain, but...

Yes this is a great price for two rain barrels. No you don't want to link them. If linking is your plan, then get the deluxe version and get two plus the short connector with brass fittings. I have 2 Deluxe and 3 regular GS rain barrels. They are great, and fit my gardening style perfectly, so I speak from user experience. The 2 rain barrels with linking kit comes with a linking hose with rubber washers. You have to drill your hole to use to connect them, there are no instructions for this process and when I called to ask about a PDF or just verbal help GS was stumped... Don't bother with this, just get the deluxe version and pay more. I would recommend this product, but just to get 2 barrels for a good price, don't plan on linking them.

About Me Master Gardener
I purchased four of these barrels several years ago. The first problem I had included the overflow hoses becoming detached from the bottom outlet and difficult to reinsert without continued leaking. I had to cut out the top grid to be able to get into the barrel and reattach the large hose. The second problem was with the plastic female outlets (four on each barrel); they were easily stripped and often leaked despite teflon tape. Another small issue was that the plastic U-shaped pieces that attach to the top rim of the barrel and are designed to hold an outlet hose broke after several years maybe the result of sun exposure. . This is a great company but these barrels could use some tweaking.
Second time around

We thought about returning the barrels since there is NO holee to connect two barrels!! But since we can use them separately we kept them. Also one set came with zero accessories-overflow tube inside and outside and connecting kit--which we can't use anyway. Called customer service and this issue was resolved satisfactorily. If this barrel could keep the capacity and have a flat back it would be very useful in tight areas. And a hose connection in the bottom 1/3 area would also be very helpful. We bought 2 before our last El Nino-late 90's. These barrels are still on the job and were significant in our decision making process-that and the large capacity and better colors.
