Best way to start seeds indoors, now that APS is gone

By raggedyann

Pros

  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Hard To Extract Seedlings

Best Uses

Have used GS's APS system for more than 20 years to start seedlings in a window at a weekend house and bought these last year when the old system was phased out. Like APS, these sets are tidier, easier to manage and more compact than any other way to start seeds. Unlike APS components (which had to be soaked in bleach at the end of each season), these go through the dishwasher. But, unlike the APS, the little legs that keep the bottom of the tray up out of the water reservoir do not work to poke the rooted seedlings out of their cells for planting--if they did, 5 stars for sure.

Not easy to get plants out

Once the plants are done growing and you are ready to transplant them, they are very difficult to get out of the cells. I prefer the APS systems in that the plants are easy to remove for transplanting. I'm going to stick to the APS systems.

    Good product but 2 caveats

    By chet, a Master Gardener

    Pros

    • Most Parts Very Sturdy

    Cons

    • Flimsy Tops

    Best Uses

    • Obviously Starting Seeds

I purchased this combo to start my seeds this spring and it has worked well. I have used others in the past and wanted ones that were sturdy enough to be used over many seasons. This one meets those requirements with the exception that the dome is no heavier than others for regular seed trays. The first caveat is that it is not a deep dome and thus once the seeds are up either a higher dome is needed (but doesn't fit because it is a non-standard size)or not using a dome. The second caveat is that the use of a propagation matt to supply heat for germination is not practical and while the water reservoir works great to keep the soil moist, it doesn't supply heat to the growing medium. This is not a flaw in the product itself, just in how you want to start your seeds.
    Suggestions:
1)Use standard size trays, domes etc.
2)Redesign the system so that the tray can sit on the heating matt and yet still draw water from the reservoir.

    successful seed starting

    Pros

    • Self contained

    Cons

    • Water Has Odor

    Best Uses

I never had good indoor success with starting seeds. This kit is a good start. White cone flower seeds came up and have second leaves. I am thrilled. The fertilized water has some off odor after a few weeks. Have not found a cure for that.
