Exclusive | Our APS-24 Units Ensure Seed Starting Success

  • All-in-one seed starting system offers self-watering convenience
  • Includes Pegboard, Planting Tray, Reservoir, Capillary Mat, and Greenhouse Cover
  • The larger 2" x 2" cells of this APS-24 are best suited for fast-growing seedlings, such as tomatoes, peppers and marigolds

This all-in-one unit ensures steady supply of water for seedlings. Just keep the reservoir filled and the soil will remain perfectly moist. The APS 24 ensures sturdy, healthy transplants that will thrive in your garden. The insulated growing tray and greenhouse cover trap warmth and moisture to speed germination. The capillary matting and reservoir let seedlings help themselves to water as they need it, even if you're away. Seedlings pop right out of the tray for planting, which prevents root damage and transplant shock. We recommend our Germinating Mix. Replacement Parts are available.

  • 24 2" x 2" deep square cells
  • Overall dimensions: 14-1/4" L x 9-3/4" W and 7-1/4" high with clear cover

Great Seedling Starter

Cons

  • Plant Cells Are Shallow

Comments about APS 24:

I just started using it. I have a plug starter and my plan was to pot my seedlings up to the APS 24 tray and grow them in that until transplanting. As such, the cells are a little too shallow. If your plan is to just start seeds, then it will be great, but you may need to pot up to deeper pots before transplanting to the garden.

    Comments about APS 24:

I use these to sow my primrose seeds. I first saw them years ago when a friend was leaving the RI Spring Flower Show with one. She pointed out its virtues of having a water reservoir plus a plastic cover to hold in moisture as seeds began to grow. I was "sold" and went home with 2 of them. They cost about $5 or $6 then. (Now significantly more). They worked perfectly with primrose seeds, which need moisture, but not too much, and I have used them ever since that time.
Because of the price increase, I am now contemplating re-using some of the parts. But this method works for me on my light cart indoors, so I will continue with it.

      Comments about APS 24:

I have been using APS seed starting trays for many years, but the new design has a very flimsy reservoir that splits easily and won't hold water. When I come to the Gardener's Supply web site to purchase extra reservoirs they seem to always be on backorder. I have resorted to picking up cheap plastic trays from my local big box store.

Styrofoam is banned in our city and I think it should have been more clear in the catalog picture and description that this is made of styrofoam. I returned it due to this. Source a recyclable material and I will order.

                  Much better solution!

I haven't had a chance to use this, just inspect the elements. It seems cheaply made, as others have said, but I suspect it will work well for my seedlings. I'm sure it will do great for this year, I just don't know if it will last for more than one year.

                    Comments about APS 24:

The instructions that came with the set could not be clearer. We planted tomato and pepper seeds a couple of weeks ago nearly all of which have sprouted. With other seed starters we've used in the past we have had to water every day but so far have only had to water a couple of times. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is that I ordered the 2" cells hoping I would be able to plant the seedlings directly into our self-watering planters but at this point it seems likely that we will need an in-between step as I'm not sure these plants will be large and strong enough to plant directly.
