About Me Avid Gardener
Comments about : Aerobin® Composter:
I've had this compostor for three or four years now. My first batch of composite was wonderful, rich almost black fine compost. It took quite a while to make but it was worth the wait. Today as I was adding in some kitchen scraps I saw a rat duck deep down into the compost. I have kept it closed, both doors and lid so I guess it got in through the bottom somehow. I thought the bottom was solid I can't really remember. Now I'm ready to take it to the curb. As far as I'm concerned making a composter rat proof should be a number one priority especially for one that sells for over three hundred dollars. So now I have a very expensive rat feeder that I don't know what to do with.

Doesn't make compost
from Salt Lake City
I have had this composter for over 6 years. I have never seen a finished compost from it, even when I left materials inside for 2 years - the bottom material was far from finished compost. I always have to get the bottom half out and let it finish on a pile in my garden (very labor intensive), before it turns into compost so I can sift it and spread it in my garden. I still like how sturdy it is and that I can add stuff continuously, as well are ability to collect compost tea, but it really doesn't make compost. I do not recommend this composter.
Merchant response: Thank you for your feedback on the Aerobin Composter and for giving us a chance to discuss the issues with you. In general, we recommend using a mixture of approximately 25 parts brown to 1 part green for compost and adding enough water to keep the mixture moist but not wet. If your mixture still isn’t breaking down, then some of our Super Hot Compost Starter (#38-189) will help get the pile going. If you have any more issues in the future, please feel free to reach out to us again. 1-888-833-1412

Waste of money
By Grandma the gardner
from Isle, MN
I am very disappointed. I have been using this for 3 years and decided to open it up and remove the compost. What a sad day. It did not work. I would think after 3 years I would have beautiful compost. I had to dig it out with a shovel. It was hard and nothing like I expected. Total waste of money. We could not get the door back on. I deserve a refund from the company. I am a 68 year old grandmother.

A ggod basic idea but has design flaws
By CB the gardener
from Corcoran, MN
This bin is sturdy. It does not fall over nor blow away. In Minnesota we get ALL sorts of weather including very strong winds. The contents do totally freeze in the winter, but with -20degree winters that is to be expected. I put it together myself without problems and I am a senior women who has only average mechanical ability. It does not smell if the proper green to brown ratio is maintained.I used kitchen scraps but no meat or diary. For the brown I used was well shreded leaves and wadded up single pages of newspaper, no cardboard, pizza boxes or such. It did take longer than I expected to make compost, however it was sitting in full shade. The compost quality was nice and fine. There are some design problems with this item. First, the lower panels that can be removed to remove finished compost are not very functional. If one removes the panel the compost from further up the bin falls down and it is almost impossible to get the panels back into place. I finally used two concrete building blocks to hold the removal lower side panels in place. Second, the spigot to drain the compost tea is useless. It will not turn after several years. I had to use a vicegrip to get it to turn. The compost tea does not drain so the materials at the bottom are too wet and do not decompose properly. Third, the plastc grid on the bottom that is part of the drain system for the compost tea has holes that are too big. The compost falls into the holes and clogs the drain system. Maybe this problem could be solved by placing some landscape fabric over the grid so water runs through but not the compost. Have not tried that yet. Now I am wondering if the flaws are so bad that I should retire the composter or try again.
Merchant response: Thank you so much for your feedback about this product, I have submitted your suggestions for review. We are very sorry that you are having difficulties with this item! A quick call to our customer service department should provide you with a quick and suitable resolution!

Bought it 0ver 3yrs ago ,not even a small pail of compose but rough bits of material,The only good thing is not smelly but have little flies, put in a lot of compose starters and followed all ax act directions also paid over$400.00++ for it when it came out.Should have bought a less expensive brand, thinking of putting the bin on the curb soon.

Still waiting for compost
from Boston, MA
I have had several composters and although the Aerobin may be the best looking, it was a failure for making compost. I have gotten 3 batches of compost from my other bin and have yet to get one batch after almost 2 years from the Aerobin. The central core makes it hard to turn the compost and the moisture content is very uneven.

Doors come off!
from Las Vegas, NV
About Me Master Gardener
As the materials break down it creates pressure against the doors and they come popping off and you can't put them back on without emptying the composter. So, we emptied the composter, used a cord and tied the doors on and refilled it. 3 days later one door has pulled away and, if it wasn't tied on, would already be completely off. I'm convinced the only reason the other door is still on is because it's up against a wall. I do like that the composter is insulated, but that's all it has going for it.

Do not waste you money
By Daisy girl
from Southeastern Pennsylvania
I filled mine up and left it alone for 1 year and I got only a few gallons of compost which I would rate a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. I have had it 2 years and if I could return it I would. The doors will not stay in place.I have composted for 15 years and this item is a complete waste of money.
