I went through 2 of these in 2 years. The motor is not strong enough. The 2nd one was sent free.

Also the base clamp holding the 2 plastic pipes together broke very early requiring the use of clamps to make the base stay together.

I didn't find it difficult to put this together, although there was a spot where I could have used another pair of hands. It's noisy and might fling debris in your face, so wear safety glasses and hearing protection. I managed to misplace both the user maual and the extra line that came with it, but I found the maual on line and replace the line with trimmer line without any problem.

It shreds mounds of leaves for me to use all over the garden and has increased the earthworms & soil texture. It only has small space underneath for shredded leaves so I now have a barrel to put it on (lined with a bag). The stand wraps around the barrel. It's a little awkward to arrange the cord but it cuts down the amount of time to change bags.

We raked the white ash leaves, Kwanzan cherry leaves, and our neighbors sycamore leaves into piles, and made short work of mincing them down to small pieces that we spread over our veggie garden, rose garden and foundation plants. It takes huge piles of leaves and shreds them into tiny piles. Just what I wanted. The lawn mower wasn't good enough to chop up the leaves for efficient composting. Now the leaf particles are much much smaller and will compost better and I won't have to deal with huge piles of waiting-to-compost leaves in the garden. Easier to till into garden too. My worm factory also appreciates the shredded leaves.

I put the shredder together yesterday and used it for the first time. I'm very good at assembling things, but this was hard. The instructions were hard to understand. It was impossible to tell which screw was being referred to - who can tell the difference between 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch by sight? I gave up putting in the last two screws because I couldn't figure out how to get them into place. So I held my breath when I started up the motor. Fortunately, it held together and did a good job shredding the leaves. It's a little unwieldy to move around, but I managed. I've only used it one afternoon, so can't comment on the durability. But I like it so far.

I have bought a lot of "plastic junk" through the years so I figured this would go a season or two of frustrating effort. To my surprise, it's working through its third fall leaf clean-up. It's very easy to use, especially if you have a number of external outlets that let you take it to the work. I mulch my gardens with the cuttings (as opposed to having the town pick up the leaves -- and the mad rush to get them to the street!) Replacing the cutting lines is a two minute snap -- very well thought-out design. Storage is easy and the thing is light but durable. A great product.

I received the shredder in time for fall clean-up. I have one of the grab it rakes, and after the leaves were piled, one full grab worked perfectly in the feeder. Then I used the rake to tap leaves into the bottom to be shredded. I put it directly in my garden, no catcher basket, and allowed the shredded leaves to come out directly on the ground. Easy to spread. Was not happy with the instructions to put the unit together. The two final screws are impossible to install...

We have used our leaf shredder for 5 years now and with 15 large, 40 year old trees and several ornamentals, it keeps working great. I bag up the leaves and hide them under a huge pine tree and rotate out every two years and use for mulch. Raking and hauling leaves to the tree dump was very time consuming. Now we mow them up, shred and store them and reuse them. 20+ pickup loads reduced to about 12 large bags of shredded leaves. Looking forward to fall.

There was very little assembly needed. However, the instructions were poor and I was missing some hardware. The frame will not stay together and keeps falling apart...I need to figure out a way to permanently join the two halves. I'm shredding leaves of live oak which are small and leathery. It does an adequate job when set on the pine straw setting. The string must be replaced often but it did turn the pile of leaves into fine particles quickly. I would recommend it with reservations. It works but is limited. You get what you pay for...you could spend $600 and get more power.

Have only been able to use this one time on some magnolia leaves. It did a good job of reducing them so they will compost much faster. However be sure to wear eye protection, long sleeves and a dust mask as the operation was very dusty and pieces of magnolia leaves were flying around.

I'm a 37 year old, 5 foot tall woman and I was easily able to operate this shredder without the help of a big strong man! That was the plus side of it. The con side? Well, it's SUPER messy! I used a big plastic bin to catch the mulch and wrapped a towel around the whole thing to avoid strays. Also, I tried to shred leaves, pine needles and grass clippings. Really nothing too thick to chop up. While it did do it's job, I found I had to run it through the machine twice to get the desired size mulch. I also had to change the cutting line the first time around. That was pretty easy. My husband was proud of me. I was thrilled to see all the organic mulch in my beds after an hour of shredding! No more disgusting Scott's dyed black mulch for me!

I bought one of these 4 years ago and used it seasonally - spring and fall - to shred up leaves. It does a good job, especially if the leaves are not too wet. Sticks, however, bring a quick end to the cutting line. Last fall it died. I wasn't going to replace it, but Gardeners Supply offered me a nice discount on a new one, so I relented. There is no information in the manual about maintenance that might extend the life of the motor, unless the instruction to store it upside down helps with lubrication in some way. I didn't do that before, and will with the new one, just in case. No obvious reason to me why storing it upside down makes any sense. This is not the shredder for you if you need to do sticks and other plant materials. This one is great for leaves, but don't try much else.

Makes yard cleanup easier. Move it to the work area and begin shredding. It reduced a large pile of leaves and pine needles into a single recycling bin very quickly. Use the bungie cords and a plastic bag to reduce dust and blowby. Cutter line replacement is easy and quick.

We decided not to throw our leaves away last fall...but they are breaking down too slowly so I bought this to speed things up. IT shreds alright...and now I don't have to buy much. However, leaves tend to clog the hopper if very wet. you will need toi shut it off and scrape the barrel periodically. Still less work than bagging and saves on mulch too.

Major "cons": (1) The clamp system joining the two handles and legs needs improvement. It is a friction-fit only. Holes should be tapped through the clamp and the semi-circular base so that the clamp is screwed to the base, not merely offering a friction-fit. The base separates easily, especially if the handles are even slightly twisted.

(2) The replacement .90 package of twelve cords is way, way too expensive. It would be cheaper to buy a new cord holder which apparently comes with 36 pieces of the same gauge monofilament line for twenty dollars or so.

Instructions should include caution about use with wet leaves. "Double shredding" should always be recommended, with the machine set on "coarse" first, and then the machine re-set to "fine" for a good, evenly cut end-product.

As it comes, it is unclear with the present model where the thermal re-set button is located. Although underneath the motor head and frame, and accessible only by turning the unit over, "how" the reset works remains a mystery, if indeed it works at all. I never operated the unit to the extent that it overheated or bogged down, but it is easy to see how inexperienced operators can easily cause the motor to become overworked.

This is NOT a commercial grade product. Single yard use (small to medium yard) perhaps, but not large amounts of leaves.

It does produce an excellent mulch on "fine setting" but getting a substantial amount of mulch for bed cover purposes is extremely time consuming. At present, no other product appears heavily enough rated or designed to work exclusively with leaves.

Fine machine for obsessive-compulsive types.

Assembly takes patience and a fair degree of mechanical common sense. All parts lined up well.

Securing the two halves of the hopper at their meeting points should be better designed. As it is, only a small 1/8 inch plastic moulded pin assures exact alignment, and over time, could easily become worn or abraded away. External, surface-mounted injection-moulded clamps designed to be screwed together would make a much sturdier joint.

Recommended only for casual, single-owner use. This machine is obviously not suited for abusive commercial or large-scale day in and day-out use, even if seasonal.

In an effort to get come use out of the leaves that inundate the yard each year (aprt from the exercise of raking them!) I decdied to try my hand at shredding the leaves to use as mulch next season. This shredder made the process much easier. It handled wet and dry leaves with no trouble and even munched up some twigs which got through the vetting process without destroying the cutting "wires". And we found that changing the cutters is the easiest switch of similar items that we have ever found. No tools, no hystrionics, no problem :-) I'm definitely pleased I invested in this - it will be my friend for many years :-)

Garbage collectors love too. Only 1/10th as many filled yard bags this year for them to pick up. Neighbors came over to see and oh and ah and ask me where I bought. Even does wet leaves in a breeze. I have a yard full of trees. This is the best leaf shredder I have used to date. It is light weight, easy to set up and cleans up easy. Multiple settings let me use the right amount of power. Works best with a medium size bin/basket underneath (I use a recycle bin).

This is great for home use in mulching large volumes of leaves. it's pretty easy to set up, and at 17 pounds, you can move it around the yard as you choose. The Flowtron "canister" mulcher is suoerior to a "convertable" gas powered blower/mulcher, which I find to be very clumsy, hot, and tiring to handle.
I have an acre of land & probably close to 2 dozen large trees. There are a lot of leaves, and as-mulched, they are great on my flower beds.

I shredded through a yard of wet, heavy leaves in one day. I was careful about how I loaded the hopper and replaced the shredding line for great results. We have poor drainage in our yard and our leaves stay wet even in dry weather conditions. We had shredded our front yard's leaves with great results and were worried about taking on the wet backyard leaves. It went really well. AND the shredded leaves take up so little room that I'm tempted to take on some of my neighbor's bagged leaves to cover all of my beds. Since we shred to fill raised beds and flower beds, I put the machine where we want the mulch, shred there and move the machine to the next spot. So we gather the leaves once, shred and spread. We don't even use a bag or other container to mulch into. The machine is light enough for me to move easily. Like I said I LOVE this thing. I used to haul the leaves in the back of my pickup truck to the local transfer station. This could easily take up to ten trips. With the leaf shreader I could compost most of the leaves in two large chicken wire bins. The biggest problem with the shreader is that I find myself constantly replacing the nylon line that is used to shread the leaves. Usally the line is broken by twigs that are mixed in with the leaves so you either have to presort the leaves or resolve yourself to be constantly replacing the line. The engine is a little underpower as they recommended not running for more than 20 minutes, which has not been an issue for me as the afore mentioned problems. I would recommend this for small yards or where there are only a few trees. If you have lots of leaves you may wish to consider a gas power chipper shreader. I hope to upgrade some day.

Definitely a great tool. Shredding yard debris is potentially dangerous...this shredder is not for children to use and I highly recommend, long sleeves, safety glasses and gloves. This unit works great with dry leaves, but if they're the least bit wet, they tend to get clogged at the base and block the holes where the leaves exit the unit. Biggest problems: Throws shreddings several feet away so safety area had to be very wide. Everyone within about 20 feet needed safety goggles, long sleeves, trousers, etc. even if they were not operating or feeding shredder.

Needed gentle handling and wasn't durable as promised. Following direactions to feed one batch at a time and allow it to complete before adding more (time consuming), the engine still burned out. Would not bu again.

Fall clean-up is so much easier with the leaf shredder. I simply rake up piles of leaves and then start shredding. The shredded leaves are much more compact in the yard bags and I let them sit over the winter. Once the ground warms up in the spring, then I use these stored leaves as a wonderful leaf mulch around my perennials. They have a great smell and hold moisture in my sandy soil. Additionally as they break down, they really improve my soil.

This product, along with the Leaf Collector took what was previously a two-day, two person job and made it a one-person, six hour job. The Leaf Shredder was easy to assemble and made the arduous task of raking a good-sized lawn with six large trees - dare I say - enjoyable. It was so easy that I did not even mind when my children ran through the leaf piles, scattering some of the leaves. Done in one day, without a sore back, and the resulting mulh was so good that I was able to use it everywhere we hae outdoor plants. Instead of a dozen or more trash bags full of yard waste like my neighbors have, I had two because I was able to use nearly all of the resulting mulch in the yard.

I have been shredding my fading perennials and leaves for my compost pile! I've had the shredder for about a month and so far, it has worked great! It's great to compost materials and what I don't use as compost, I'll use as mulch. And since it's lightweight, it's easy to use.

I am happy with the product, base not very sturdy unless on flat surface. Using in garden, now using leaves to mulch all of by garden and flower beds so saving on the cost of traditional mulch.

this product is absolutley the best , my plants beg for more of the leaf-shredded mulch , i don't know what it is but my trees must have some pro-healthy, rich vitamin leaves on there branches because after there shredded and piled and soaked into the roots of my trees and garden as well as grass they act on my garden and they make them grow humongous , healthy and they make the grass very soft and long with huge stocks , and couldn't be healthier , all because of this product , couldn't get better it's quiet , safe and just the best , and makes cleaning fun ! thank-you and i will keep buying !

Shreds quickly & creates lots of great composting material for my turning compost bin
It does however create a lot of dust when shredding and is quite noisy.

This is a great way to shred leaves and make compost piles. It's basically a weed wacker inside of a plastic housing. You place it over a trash can. Then, you throw handfuls of leaves to be shredded. It can't handle branches like some gas-powered shredders. But it's light, and it's easy to use even with multiple bags of leaves. I have even changed the cutting lines.

The shredded leaves make great compost or mulch. I don't know where they get the 11-to-1 numbers, but five bags of leaves become a single one for me. Plus, it's fun. Noisy. Clouds of leaf dust. My wife thinks it is insane, but I have a great time.

I used the shredder in May on a pile of last fall's leaves. I thought it did fine, even on the wet leaves from the bottom of the pile. I used the mulch, but my critical sister later said I should have put the leaves through twice if they were going to be "on display" like that.
2 minor complaints. First, I can't fit my garbage can under it and I don't want to buy a special tub. Second, the "weed-waker" cutting lines wear out rather quickly.

I use the leaf mulcher every chance I get to shred leaves in my vegetable garden. It eliminates time weeding my garden; keeps the ground moist for my vegetable plants; and my produce gets better every year.

I mainly use this shredder for leaves and dead-heads from flowers for my compost bin. My compost decomposes more quickly and is easier to turn.
I like the fact that it is light-weight, runs on electricity, & has 5 coarseness settings.
The only thing I don't like is that it won't shred thicker flower stems.
