Barley ball quietly, unnoticeably floats in water garden that ranges from 2-3 ft deep. Keeps water crystal clear. Friendly to water plants & fish. Each spring we clean a small amount of debris from 300 sq ft pond botton and replace with new ball. Works great!

Comments about Barley Ball:

A Feng Shui expert told us to place a 100-gallon+ fountain just east of the front door. About 2 months after placing & filling a horse trough, a little algae started to grow, so I looked into the barley ball.[...] but I wanted to try it. The water turned green, so I am not sure whether algae is still growing or not. It probably works much better in a real pond.

Comments about Barley Ball:

After one week in the water we noticed the algae on the waterfall rocks was diminishing. After two weeks, the algae was all gone--even in the height of summer sun and heat. Amazing! It's important to make sure it floats in the water, and doesn't wash up along the shore out of the water. Our pond is approximately 6'W x 6'L x 3' deep. I would guess we have approximately 500 gallons of water that is circulated through the total system. Our pond includes a dozen small koi (4 inch +/-) we purchased this year. The barley ball didn't seem to affect them at all. The instructions note that barley straw can use up oxygen during the decaying process, so it is critical to use the correct amount of barley straw to avoid depleting the oxygen supply in your pond and cause fish stress, but after 5 weeks, we have yet to notice any problem. To correct a problem you could add aeration or pull out the Barley ball. To use year after year you just order Barley ball refills. This works great! I'm pleased and actually surprised at the results.

Comments about Barley Ball:

Our Barley Balls have been in our fresh water fountain (two levels) for over two weeks. It was reasonably clean when we put them in. Now we have lots of green algae and mosquito larvae breeding. These fountain ponds have no plants or fish in them. In the past we have used chlorine to keep them clean. Now we are back to chlorine. Don't understand how the Barley Balls are supposed to work?

We needed 2 Barley Balls for our large pond. We had cleared out a lot of reeds and cattails late last summer. This spring the pond became filled with algae. Within 10 days of use, the water was cleaner. It continues to remain clear and clean. It allows us time to plant more suitable vegetation. Very pleased with results. It is best to begin use in early spring.

This is the simplest thing I have ever seen. So far it is working great, but I just put it in after I cleaned the pond out. I can hardly wait this summer to see how well it works. The fish love it and it doesn't bother a thing in the pond. I love the fact that it is all natural, and I am hoping I don't have to buy chemicals all summer since I have it.

Comments about Barley Ball:

We have been using the Barley Ball for a couple of years now for our 'summer only' goldfish pond. We thought we could get by til the end of the season without a new one and were very surprised what a difference it made in the 'gunk' and algae in the pond. We won't be without the Barley Ball again. The refills are not always easy to replace- wish that could be improved.

I found the refills very hard to put in. The holes had be be lined up perfectly which was tough especially since the ball was kind of slimy. Comments about Barley Ball:

The Barley Ball has done its best to keep the algae problem under control in this So. Florida climate. It didn't eliminate the problem, but at least it's at a tolerable level. Our waterfall and pond have direct sun exposure, therefore algae breeds very quickly. Even though I've had to change the refill three times in two months, it was worth it. I've ordered more refills until we install the UV lighting system.

We were at our wits end trying to keep our pond and koi pond somewhat algae free. The Barley Ball has done a good job; there is still algae (which I now guess is just part of having a pond), but the water is clear and not green. We put them in a little late in the season this year, but will do so at the right time next spring.

Comments about Barley Ball:

This is the only product that I have found that really helps to deter algae buildup in ponds, without fussing with chemical solutions. The downside is that it is unattractive bobbing among the lilypads (a more decorative housing for the barley straw would be a great plus). Still, my pond is full of aquatic life and I have pets that love to drink from the waterfall; therefore, a truly natural, non-toxic solution is essential for me. This fits the bill. It does take awhile to do its thing, however. It is not a quick fix. Best to start with it early in the season and expect to wait a couple of weeks before seeing any significant improvement -- but it does work.

Comments about Barley Ball:

I buy two of these every spring for my 3000 gallon backyard waterfall/pond/brook. The pond is home to 20-30 goldfish and shubunkins. With the help of these, active beneficial bacteria, and numerous plants, the water quality stays surprisingly clear. Remember, good filtering is essential too! The only bad thing is that these plastic balls are hard to re-use, since the algae/gunk buildup make them almost impossible to re-open for cleaning. A better system for attaching the two hemispheres together should be devised. Thanks.

Comments about Barley Ball:

It put the ball into my 12 year old pond and for the first time, ever, I can see the botoom of the pond and everything in it. The water is as clear as water from the tap. The fish are more energetic and I enjoy looking at the pond more than I have in the last 12 years. It really works.

While it doesn't make the pond crystal clear, it does improve the clarity of the water. My fish are more active and the KOI's actually play with the ball, pushing it around the pond

Best Uses:
Pondless Waterfall

Midrange Shopper
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Barley Ball:

I installed the barley ball into the upper reservoir of our pondless waterfall to combat our algae problem - but I did it mid-summer, instead of at the beginning of the season. So far, I can say the algae has stayed at around the same level. I am going to try again in the spring after the waterfall is clean - that will be the real test, to see if new algae is prevented from forming.

Good solid product that works naturally.

Comments about Barley Ball:

I use it in a 800 gallon pond with Large mouth bass, and Bluegill. It works well, but you must stay ahead of the curve, this is as much preventative as it is a problem fixer.

Comments about Barley Ball:

I decided that I really didn't need the barley ball in my Koi pond this year. Boy, what a mistake! By the first of June my pond was full of green algae and I was spending a lot of money on liquid algae control. I ordered 2 barley balls for the pond. They had that pond clear as a bell in less than a week. It really is true "you don't miss the water 'til the well goes dry."

The Barley Ball has done an excellent job in keeping algae from growing in our 40 foot diameter pond. I worried that the ball would get stuck on the side of the pond but it just floats over the entire surface. I have been quite pleased with this product.

Comments about Barley Ball:

It is unccertain to me whether the barley ball performs as advertised, and the basis for its presumed effectiveness is not documented by Gardeners' Supply Company. I cannot recognize that after inserting the barley ball in my pond it has made a significant change in the clarity of the pond. (I put the ball in the pond immediately after a powerwash cleaning of the pond substrate. [...]
