Before the widespread use of herbicides, most lawns contained white clover. As it grows, clover ensures healthy turf by adding nitrogen to the soil and choking out weeds. Dutch white clover is well suited to lawns as it is a low-growing variety and has good drought resistance.

  • A tried-and-true herbicide-free way to control weeds
  • White clover adds nitrogen to the soil
  • Well-suited to lawns because it is low-growing
  • Drought-resistant
  • Top seed an existing lawn or mix with regular seed for new lawns

I have been looking for clover seed everywhere and wasn't able to find it. This is not only a great addition to your lawn, but you can use it as "green manure" on unused garden beds - at the end of the season just till it in and you have a bed rich with nitrogen thanks to the clover. I'm ordering more to fill in some other parts of my yard.

Came right up in clay soil. Using to patch lawn and hoping it will spread through entire lawn. Wanted a green, cool lawn with less work than grass. I am also sowing on a steep slope. Had to go to the internet for sowing instructions. Seed is tiny and it's suggested you mix with seed starter or soil before sowing. I just hand-cast it carefully and it looks pretty good. Started coming up in less than a week.

I started incorporating white clover into my small cottage lawn last year and I love it. It covered the bare spots quickly and is now almost fully integrated into the lawn. It cuts down on mowing and provides a softer look and feel to an all-grass lawn.

I had great luck with this seed. I'd guess an overall germination rate of 85%+. A little time taken to dethatch or actually prepare my lawn likely would have yielded even better results (but this is my fault, not the products). Although my order did not come with instructions, a little research provided ample information.

I live in NYC and have a brownstone garden that my friends call "PARIS". I have bluestone flags as a path around the garden. After the snow and ice of winter the soil around my stepping stones gets muddy with spring rain. I have building shade from a large apartment building in the morning and a dense Norway Maple 2 houses to the west that casts afternoon shade. While I researched what to plant there I thought of planting clover as a placeholder. It was so WELL SUITED TO GROWING ON THE PATH BETWEEN THE STONES that I have reseeded it as needed for 20 years now and have bought it from GS since 1991. I use it each year to fill in other areas that get muddy over the winter and it attracts bees and butterflies and stabilizes that soil until I see what has survived the winter/spring weather and replant. SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A LAWN TO FIND A USE FOR CLOVER!!! PLANT IT FOR THE SMELL AND THE POLLINATORS IN BETWEEN YOUR STEPPING STONES!

Comments about White Clover Seed, 1/2 Lb.:

After eliminating white clover from my lawn a number of years ago, I now know that it is extremely important for sustaining our disappearing pollinators, including bees, butterflies & insects. We should spread the word that this is not a "weed" but something that our food production depends upon. No pollinators, no fruit, vegetables, etc. See Doug Tallamy's Bringing Nature Home. I intend to use it by mixing it with grass seed and filling in some empty spots in my lawn.

I sowed the clover seed as soon as it arrived. I didn't even get one sprig to sprout. I ordered from here because of the reviews that raved about the wonderful instructions that came with their order. I got no instructions. I got two zip lock bags in a cardboard box. I thought, 'well no instructions, how difficult can it be to spread clover seed'. Evidently I needed some guidance.

Comments about White Clover Seed, 1/2 Lb.:

This product was surprisingly easy to use even without planting instructions. Two different gardeners gave me two different methods for planting. The first said to prepare the soil, the second said to simply broadcast the seed over the intended area. I did a test sample using both methods. My results: The broadcast method works best on level ground (even where there is some grass although it can't be too thick). The ground prep method works best on slopes with straw or another light ground cover initially. It turns out that I actually need to use both methods because of the way my yard is hardscaped. But I'm pleased to have a nice mixture of grass and clover in just a few weeks.

Adding clover to my lawn has boosted the nitrogen in the soil with out the use of fertilizers. My lawn grass is much healthier and greener growing along side of the clover. The white clover seed was easy to "over seed" over the existing lawn and has come back strong through two Wisconsin winters.

We live at the end of a city so many of the city signs are in front of our house - speed zones, fire hydrant, welcome signs, etc. Mowing around all these things was annoying - we dug up the grass around these items and planted the clover - it sprouted quickly and appears to be filling in nicely. This will give us pretty covering without constant trimming. We also put some of the seed (one package covers a lot of area!) throughout the lawn - the bees love it and it's so pretty to look at. Plus we have a healthy lawn and no herbicides!

I used this clover seed as an alternative to grass in 2 small lawn areas in our south facing backyard. We live in Utah and grass requires a lot of maintenance here. The seed germinated quickly. It has filled in well in half the yard, the other half has very nasty clay soil and is taking longer, but had a nice germination rate. It has been 4 weeks so far. It is very green and pretty. No complaints so far... let's see how it does through the hot, dry summer and cold winter.

We had some sparse areas in the lawn due to construction fences and reworked water lines, so I mixed in the white clover seed with some lawn seed. The result is lovely -- thick green lawn with tiny white clovers. The lawn stayed greener longer, through a dry summer, and I never had to water it. I bought more white clover this year to seed through the rest of my lawn. I like that it makes the lawn healthier and stays green through dry periods.

Where we live in Wi. we have very poor sandy soil.About the best growing plant around is sand burrs. I purchased some white clover from you a couple years ago.It is still doing very well. We have since decided to expand our lawn. My recent purchase of white clover is already growing.I have already convinced my sister to order some. She only lives a couple miles fro us and has the same type soil. She would like better info on planting and best time of year to do so.Thank you so much

Clover requires less water and less mowing than grass, and mixed lawns are healthier.

Comments about White Clover Seed, 1/2 Lb.:

We used the sprouted seed as a seasonal filler for our Augustine grass and it maintained a hardy green oasis that is so desperately needed in our desert environment. Water is an issue here and this seed got by on minimal timed watering. Our spoiled puppy luxuriated in "her" space.

the clover was easy to spread and it grew easily! i spread a lot of the seeds along my chainlink fence and the clover has kept out a variety of weeds that normally spread thru the fence from the adjacent property. the rest of the seed, i spread throughout and it has blended in nicely with the other greenery (i wouldn't call it a lawn ;-)
