When gray squirrels, blue jays and starlings take over your feeders, small birds can’t compete. This feeder evens the playing field by protecting the seed ports inside a steel cage. Its 1-1/2" openings are too small for birdfeeder hogs like blue jays to squeeze through.

Seems to be very squirrel proof
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
1) I bought this feeder based on the description that it kept starlings and blue jays out. That is not the case. They simply grab the outside of the feeder, and stick their heads through the wire. The Starlings and Grackles cleaned out my full feeder in one day.
Other drawbacks I've found are:
2) cover is too small, so snow builds up on feeder platform, preventing birds from accessing food (about 7" in the last snowfall).
3) Food can only be accessed via holes at the bottom of the tube, where it splills into the bottom plate. The cage holes are small so that big birds can't enter inside the cage, but the cage is located too close to the feeder plate at the bottom (where the Grackles and Starlings easily grab it). The feeder might work better if the feeder holes were distributed at heights along the tube, and not allowed to spill out to the platform below.
On the plus side, the feeder looks great (stylish), appears to be durable, and has a nice feature of a clip that goes on the chain at the top to prevent the top from falling off, while easily coming off for filling the feeder.
Bottom line: I wish I would have read my review before buying this feeder, as I wouldn't have bought it.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Great feeder, attractive, easy to refill. We haven't see any squirrels yet, but the birds like it.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
gift to my husband, the bird enthusiast. hard to tell at this time of year, since a lot of birds have migrated. seems very sturdy and practical. also very attractive outside our ranch condo.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This feeder, like the globe, is great for keeping little birds safe and giving them a chance to feed without being tormented by bigger birds.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This bird feeder is attractive, and fairly easy to fill. It does not keep the larger birds (Crows, Pigeons) from feeding on it. The larger birds sit on the bottom tray, and are able to eat the seed in the tray. It is durable, as it has gone through our South Dakota wind and winter without breaking.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I like how it was designed to keep the larger birds out.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my bird loving relatives. They loved it. (And so did I).
Very attractive. They haven't had a chance to use
it as yet, but I am sure it will keep the gray
squirrels out and the birds in to feed safely. I
may just order another one for myself.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Like the look and ease of use of this feeder, but the red cardinals can not feed at it. The cage openings are too small.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I like the looks and construction of this feeder, however the lid is really a drawback to its functionality. It is chained in place, but the chain is easily undone by the squirrels and jays and then nothing holds the lid in place and it dangles on the outside of the cage, while the seed gets wet from rain and the squirrels have a feast.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I've been amazed at how many birds we've seen in our yard since we put this feeder up...and in only a few short weeks! Not to mention the incredible variety of birds it attracts. It definitely puts the larger birds at a disadvantage, so there's no bullying.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This bird feeder is not only very useful but very well constructed. My birds love it.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The feeder repels the unwanted squirrels, which is a Godsend. It is also very attractive in design and adds to the beauty of the feeding area. Additionally, it holds an ample supply of bird food. All in all, I recommend this feeder to other bird enthusiasts.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The squirrels go round and round but they can't get the seed.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
We have SO many jays that the little birds don't stand a chance of eating! This feeder attracts all birds, makes great entertainment when the jays come calling & still offers the little guys food!
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Squirrels sit inside and take their time emptying the feeder. One squirrel got caught inside the plastic center tube and couldn't get out until I unsrewed the bar across the top.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Good for feeding chickadees in the winter in the mountains.Keeps out the blue jays and magpies.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Attractive, easy to use, great for the smaller birds.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
All birds love this feeder! While it is beautiful and I'm pleased with the quality, it does not stop Starlings, Red wing blackbirds and other large birds. They cling to the outside and stick their head through to scoop out the seed. It might work better if the cage would be wider at the bottom.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I love this birdfeeder because the Chickadees and Goldfinches and Pine Siskins love it. The squirrels don't even bother with it! It holds a fair amount of seed, and its very easy to refill. It holds up in our Eastern Colorado prairie winds and is very pretty.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Two things: (1) Impossible to get inside and remove old, moldy seed. (2) Not sufficient room for small birds to move in the space between the seed column and the cage wire. I also bought two of the round ones , and they work fine. I'm sorry I spent the$$ on these lantern models.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The bird feeder is very attractive, easy to fill. I have never found any bird feeder that is squirrel proof. The squirrels are too smart and find a way into anything they want.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I keep a couple of birdfeeder's outside the family room window to give the cat something to watch while we're at work. This is a large feeder, fills easily and is very attractive. Lots of birds visit and keep the kitty entertained!
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Easy to put together and hang. The birds were a little hesitant to access the new feeder at first but this is picking up. Squirrels have not even tried to knock it down.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Please don't get me wrong. I absolutely love, love, love my new feeder!! It just does not keep the feeder bullies out... It is a beautiful design but I would suggest that the cage extend a bit more from the seed tube and perhaps take away the inside perch. I don't even mind feeding the Jays but most times black birds are able to percj on the bottom and then feed from the tray. The proceed to scatter the seed to their waiting earthbound comrades and empty the feeder in rapid time. They pretty much run the chicks, titmice, finches and cardinals off. I get so frustrated that at times I open my front door just to run them off! An exercise in futility I know[...]
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
not squirrel proof. they have no problem hanging and gourging. need larger diameter and tighter caging at bottom to prevent this. would not buy again.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Because we have so many Red Winded Black birds I had to add 2 wraps of wire at the bottom to keep the large birds from sticking their heads thru the openings. A hot glue gun was used to attach the additional wire wraps. Now the smalls birds enjoy it with out interference.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Keeps out the big birds such as starlings and bluejays but squirrels have no trouble attaching themselves and getting their noses into the food.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Squirrels are not happy!
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I have several birdfeeders, but this one appealed to me since it claimed it only allowed the small birds & gave them an secure way to eat without being intimidated & chased away by the bigger birds. When it arrived I thought it was a mistake & that the openings between the mesh would be too small for all but a very few birds. Wrong! It is my busiest feeder & the little guys just love it, sometimes just resting in there for awhile after eating, especially early in the morning when it's still chilly.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
It keeps the large birds away from the feed. such as Starlings etc. who run the little birds away so they can't eat. I LOVE IT.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This has been a great bird feeder so far. We had a big problem with squirrels and crows getting all fo the bird seed and this seems to have stopped it.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Chalk one up for the birds. No squirrell has been able to defeat the defenses of this bird feeder. We live in Florida and enjoy year-round visits from a wide variety of birds. Therefore, we include different offerings in our bird's only buffet. This feeder allows the smallest species to dine in safety.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Well made product for a good price. The "alligator clip" helps keep squirrels from accessing the top of the feeder. So far no squirrels have gotten to this feeder from any angle...
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The diameter of the cage needs to be larger to deter starlings from putting their heads in and eating the seed. The cage holes need to be slightly larger to allow desirable birds such as titmice in.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Very Attractive!
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Works great birds love it
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
lOCATED RIGHT OUTSIDE OUR PARLOR PICTURE WINDOM. gREAT SHOW!
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This is a nice feeder but the openings are too small for most of my winter feeders. The seed just sits out there. No takers. I will keep it for summer when I have small gold finches in my yard.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Best feeder I've found! My goldfinches and sparrows can eat in peace because the blackbirds can't get inside it. I am really, really pleased and plan to buy more.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Attractive choice to keep the large birds out and cater to the smaler birds.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Keeps the cat away also
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I like the idea behind this feeder. I needed something the squirrels could not destroy. However, the spaces on the feeder are too small and keep out most birds. Only the smallest birds can squeeze through. I had to purchase another feeder for the finches and cardinals. Filled the feeder a week ago and it's still half full. Nice feeder but it needs a bar adjustment.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Sturdy enough for windy areas. Mesh is large for sunflower seeds and large seed mix. I was impressed at how easy it is to set up. I'm thinking of buying another.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This was a gift for my husband - we love to watch the birds in our yard - this is a very good looking product but to date I have seen one chickadee who looked very confused trying to figure out how to get the seed. It left this feeder and went to another to compete with the squirrels! Dissapointing - I will probably go through the hassle of taking it down, finding a box and returning it (before it bocomes a bear feeder!). This is the ONLY time I have been disappointed with a Garden Supply product.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Birds seem to love it, but Cardinals seem to be too big for it.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The squirrels couldn't get any seed, couldn't bite through it . . . it totally stumped them!!
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The chickadees like this bird feeder more than nuthatches or juncos. I have two bird feeders. The other is not caged and is more popular, but more and more the chickadees are chosing this caged feeder. Since the seed tube has a somewhat small diameter, I recommend first putting the seed in a plastic container with a 1.25 inch opening using a large funnel (I use a Simply Orange juice bottle). Then it is easy to fill the feed tube without spilling any seed on the ground. The other option is to buy two of these feeders and fill the empty one inside during the winter, and then swap the full one for the one outside.

Attractive & small birds like it.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The first birds at this feeder were the scrub jays, who have been terrorizing the smaller birds at my feeder. I bought this one to solve that problem, but the jays simply grasped the bottom, poked their heads and beaks in and ate to their hearts' content, still terrorizing the finches, titmice and chickadees. The seed the jays spill on the ground while picking out the choice sunflower seeds does keep the ground-feeding juncos happy, though. And I have to sweep the deck daily.

This birdfeeder looks like it will definitely do the job for all the little birds.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Immediately became the favorite feeder in my yard. Easy for me to fill, easy for the birds to feed from. Holds more than double the amount of seed of my other caged feeder, yet empties out first!

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This feeder does not deter squirrels, they hang upside down and reach their paws in to grab the bird feed. Because it takes them a long time to fill their tummy's, getting just one seed at a time, bird are discouraged from feeding and stay away. I solved the problem, by only filling it with safflower seeds which the squirrels do not like and many birds prefer.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The tray at the bottom does not have drain holes so the seeds began to sprout. I had to drill drain holes in the bottom tray so that would not reoccur

This birdfeeder exceeded my expectations.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
because it uses a tray system, rain soaks the seed. I have observed larger birds clinging to it & managing to get seed off the tray.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I bought this, hoping that it would deter the deer from eating all my birdseed. Every morning, the bird feeder that was filled when I went to bed, would be totally empty. No more! It seems that the deer can't figure out how to get to the seed, and the larger birds that would empty the feeder daily can't seem to get to the seed, either! I love it!!

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Cheaply made, not very high quality, not what it was advertised to be.I would save the [$] plus shipping and spend it on the audobon one that is $54... same design and much higher quality.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
larger birds had no trouble feeding from bottom of feeder and the first time I went to clean it noticed that it was rusting and is less than a month old.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This is a beautiful feeder, but its functionality leaves a lot to be desired. Despite holes in the base, it collects water and is rusting. The plastic tubing also wicks the water, and I've ended up with two batches of moldy sunflower seeds. I could add a dome, but that defeats the purpose of its attractiveness. I've also noticed that the blue jays have no problem hanging from the bottom and reaching in for a treat. I've gone back to my old mesh feeder and will use this as a decorative item for my porch.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
After reading the ad info on this feeder plus paying $$$ money for it I thought I would finally have a feeder that actually helps discourage squirrels and large birds like grackles, etc. But not so, they tip the feeder so the seed falls on the ground. Therefore the feeder empties quickly and the chickadees & finches loose out. My suggestion would be to have perches in the seed tube and no opening at the bottom (like finch feeder) so the seed doesn't empty in the tray. When they can the small birds do go into the feeder to get seed from the tray then fly off, perches inside would be helpful.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The top is too small to keep out the rain, we had to retrofit another larger top from an older feeder. The bottom is also too small, the birds kick out most of the seeds. We added a large copper plate underneath. The openings are also too small, we cut out the mesh in two places to make a larger entrance, which is fine for the finches but still keeps out the doves.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Perfect house guest gift.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Attractive feeder however, squirrels tip it and eat the seed right out of it. Not for someone trying to feed birds rather than squirrels.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
One of the multiple feeders I have helps to win my battle with the squirrels and provides adequate food for my flying feathered friends

waste of money
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
We hang it from a shepherd's crook and it sits outside our bay window. Birds came immediately and aren't bothered by the squirrels. It looks clean and the smaller birds fit inside. We love it.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I use this product to feed the birds in our area. I had trouble with the deer emptying the other feeder, and so far the only thing that empties this one is the wind and the birds.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Frustrates the squirrels and large birds, including a large woodpecker. The little birds really like it. I just needed to provide a dome cover over the top to keep the snow and ice off the feeding platform.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
This feeder hangs nicely from my tree branch. The squirrels try to climb on it, but it immediately starts to spin, and they can't get a grip so they fall off. Now I can once again attract the smaller birds, such as finches, juncos, and titmice, without them getting frightened by the squirrels.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Great gift for a someone who enjoys birds. Highly attractrive.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The design prevents larger Birds (Doves, Blue Jays,Crows) from bullying the smaller birds from their food.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
A nice large birdfeeder that you won't have to fill everyday! Classy design and functional too.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I like having different feeders to attract various kinds of birds. This lantern cage birdfeeder definitely keeps out the big birds so the smaller ones can dine.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Since the only way the food is available is thru the bottom I have not had as many birds feeding at it especially now that we have a lot of snow that fills the bottom of the feeder
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
It took awhile for the small birds to approach the feeder but now that they have, the number of birds in my yard has significantly increased and the jays have stayed away.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Good looking, yet the blue jays can cling to the base and get the seed because the seed exits at the bottom.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The feeder is attractive and it absolutely deters squirrels and larger birds...but I have even seen some of the smaller birds having difficulty too. And I was saddedned to see a gorgeous cardinal give up after a brave attempt. So far I haven't seen my regular finches or titmice, so it's too soon for me to tell if this is the exact feeder I need. But if not, then I will definitely order another style from you. I do like your products and service very much. I am always pleased with the nice items I order from you.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
I thought this feeder would be like the globe feeder that I'd had before, but instead of holes in the tube, all the seed drops to the tray at the bottom, then it falls to the ground. Because of this tray, the large birds like starlings can get to the seed and they scare away the smaller birds. I've ordered the globe feeder again and will donate this or store it.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Keeps the big birds and squirrels away from the seed so that the small birds have a chance.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
The squirrels still haven't figured out how to get their lunch and the small birds love it.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
We were plagued with mourning doves hogging our feeders and spilling expensive finch seeds. Since we got this feeder the doves now use the platform feeder and the small birds can dine in peace. It is also very attractive. Great product!
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
Best feeder to fight off the grey squirrels.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
this feeder is GREAT. It doesnt allow the large birds like Sea Gulls and Doves to eat all the seed.I will probably buy another one.
Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:
It is perfect for keeping the large birds and squirrels from scaring away the smaller birds and feeding on their food.
