(based on 90 ratings)
Located in: Yard & Landscaping, Backyard Birding, Birdfeeders

When gray squirrels, blue jays and starlings take over your feeders, small birds can’t compete. This feeder evens the playing field by protecting the seed ports inside a steel cage. Its 1-1/2" openings are too small for birdfeeder hogs like blue jays to squeeze through.

  • Steel cage with a clear seed tube
  • Ideal for feeding chickadees, finches and nuthatches
  • Holds up to 8 cups of seed

Doesn't keep out Grackles and Starlings
By Bert from Danbury, CT on 1/18/2011
Pros:
Attractive, Attracts The Right Animals, Durable, Easy To Clean, Easy To Setup
Cons:
Accessed by big birds, Bottom only feeding, Cover not big enough
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

1) I bought this feeder based on the description that it kept starlings and blue jays out. That is not the case. They simply grab the outside of the feeder, and stick their heads through the wire. The Starlings and Grackles cleaned out my full feeder in one day.

Other drawbacks I've found are:

2) cover is too small, so snow builds up on feeder platform, preventing birds from accessing food (about 7" in the last snowfall).

3) Food can only be accessed via holes at the bottom of the tube, where it splills into the bottom plate. The cage holes are small so that big birds can't enter inside the cage, but the cage is located too close to the feeder plate at the bottom (where the Grackles and Starlings easily grab it). The feeder might work better if the feeder holes were distributed at heights along the tube, and not allowed to spill out to the platform below.

On the plus side, the feeder looks great (stylish), appears to be durable, and has a nice feature of a clip that goes on the chain at the top to prevent the top from falling off, while easily coming off for filling the feeder.

Bottom line: I wish I would have read my review before buying this feeder, as I wouldn't have bought it.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

This bird feeder is attractive, and fairly easy to fill. It does not keep the larger birds (Crows, Pigeons) from feeding on it. The larger birds sit on the bottom tray, and are able to eat the seed in the tray. It is durable, as it has gone through our South Dakota wind and winter without breaking.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

I like the looks and construction of this feeder, however the lid is really a drawback to its functionality. It is chained in place, but the chain is easily undone by the squirrels and jays and then nothing holds the lid in place and it dangles on the outside of the cage, while the seed gets wet from rain and the squirrels have a feast.

All birds love this feeder! While it is beautiful and I'm pleased with the quality, it does not stop Starlings, Red wing blackbirds and other large birds. They cling to the outside and stick their head through to scoop out the seed. It might work better if the cage would be wider at the bottom.

Two things: (1) Impossible to get inside and remove old, moldy seed. (2) Not sufficient room for small birds to move in the space between the seed column and the cage wire. I also bought two of the round ones , and they work fine. I'm sorry I spent the$$ on these lantern models.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

Please don't get me wrong. I absolutely love, love, love my new feeder!! It just does not keep the feeder bullies out... It is a beautiful design but I would suggest that the cage extend a bit more from the seed tube and perhaps take away the inside perch. I don't even mind feeding the Jays but most times black birds are able to percj on the bottom and then feed from the tray. The proceed to scatter the seed to their waiting earthbound comrades and empty the feeder in rapid time. They pretty much run the chicks, titmice, finches and cardinals off. I get so frustrated that at times I open my front door just to run them off! An exercise in futility I know[...]

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

I have several birdfeeders, but this one appealed to me since it claimed it only allowed the small birds & gave them an secure way to eat without being intimidated & chased away by the bigger birds. When it arrived I thought it was a mistake & that the openings between the mesh would be too small for all but a very few birds. Wrong! It is my busiest feeder & the little guys just love it, sometimes just resting in there for awhile after eating, especially early in the morning when it's still chilly.

I like the idea behind this feeder. I needed something the squirrels could not destroy. However, the spaces on the feeder are too small and keep out most birds. Nice feeder but it needs a bar adjustment.

This was a gift for my husband - we love to watch the birds in our yard - this is a very good looking product but to date I have seen one chickadee who looked very confused trying to figure out how to get the seed. It left this feeder and went to another to compete with the squirrels! Dissapointing - I will probably go through the hassle of taking it down, finding a box and returning it (before it bocomes a bear feeder!). This is the ONLY time I have been disappointed with a Garden Supply product.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

The chickadees like this bird feeder more than nuthatches or juncos. I have two bird feeders. The other is not caged and is more popular, but more and more the chickadees are chosing this caged feeder. Since the seed tube has a somewhat small diameter, I recommend first putting the seed in a plastic container with a 1.25 inch opening using a large funnel (I use a Simply Orange juice bottle). Then it is easy to fill the feed tube without spilling any seed on the ground. The other option is to buy two of these feeders and fill the empty one inside during the winter, and then swap the full one for the one outside.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

The first birds at this feeder were the scrub jays, who have been terrorizing the smaller birds at my feeder. I bought this one to solve that problem, but the jays simply grasped the bottom, poked their heads and beaks in and ate to their hearts' content, still terrorizing the finches, titmice and chickadees. The seed the jays spill on the ground while picking out the choice sunflower seeds does keep the ground-feeding juncos happy, though. And I have to sweep the deck daily.

Immediately became the favorite feeder in my yard. Easy for me to fill, easy for the birds to feed from. Holds more than double the amount of seed of my other caged feeder, yet empties out first!

Squirrels can figure out this one
By Florida Golden Oldie from Lecanto Florida on 10/5/2009
Pros:
Attractive, Durable
Cons:
Not Squirrel Proof
Best Uses:
Year Round
Describe Yourself:
Budget Shopper
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

This feeder does not deter squirrels, they hang upside down and reach their paws in to grab the bird feed. Because it takes them a long time to fill their tummy's, getting just one seed at a time, bird are discouraged from feeding and stay away. I solved the problem, by only filling it with safflower seeds which the squirrels do not like and many birds prefer.

Bird Feeder

Pros:
Attractive, Easy To Set Up
Cons:
Lacking drain holes
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

The tray at the bottom does not have drain holes so the seeds began to sprout. I had to drill drain holes in the bottom tray so that would not reoccur

because it uses a tray system, rain soaks the seed. I have observed larger birds clinging to it & managing to get seed off the tray.

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

I bought this, hoping that it would deter the deer from eating all my birdseed. Every morning, the bird feeder that was filled when I went to bed, would be totally empty. No more! It seems that the deer can't figure out how to get to the seed, and the larger birds that would empty the feeder daily can't seem to get to the seed, either! I love it!!

More attractive than functional
By Camas from Portland, Oregon on 4/19/2009
Pros:
Attractive
Cons:
Moldy, Rusting
Describe Yourself:
Midrange Shopper
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

This is a beautiful feeder, but its functionality leaves a lot to be desired. Despite holes in the base, it collects water and is rusting. The plastic tubing also wicks the water, and I've ended up with two batches of moldy sunflower seeds. I could add a dome, but that defeats the purpose of its attractiveness. I've also noticed that the blue jays have no problem hanging from the bottom and reaching in for a treat. I've gone back to my old mesh feeder and will use this as a decorative item for my porch.

I wouldn't buy it again
By PatVerified Reviewer from Norfolk, VA on 4/8/2009
Pros:
Attractive
Describe Yourself:
Budget Shopper
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

After reading the ad info on this feeder plus paying $$$ money for it I thought I would finally have a feeder that actually helps discourage squirrels and large birds like grackles, etc. But not so, they tip the feeder so the seed falls on the ground. Therefore the feeder empties quickly and the chickadees & finches loose out. My suggestion would be to have perches in the seed tube and no opening at the bottom (like finch feeder) so the seed doesn't empty in the tray. When they can the small birds do go into the feeder to get seed from the tray then fly off, perches inside would be helpful.

Nice design, but bad in the details
By Harold and RoseVerified Purchaser from San Francisco on 3/28/2009
Pros:
Attractive, Attracts The Right Animals, Durable, Easy To Clean, Easy To Set Up
Cons:
Mesh openings too small, Top and bottom too small
Describe Yourself:
Midrange Shopper
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

The top is too small to keep out the rain, we had to retrofit another larger top from an older feeder. The bottom is also too small, the birds kick out most of the seeds. We added a large copper plate underneath. The openings are also too small, we cut out the mesh in two places to make a larger entrance, which is fine for the finches but still keeps out the doves.

This feeder hangs nicely from my tree branch. The squirrels try to climb on it, but it immediately starts to spin, and they can't get a grip so they fall off. Now I can once again attract the smaller birds, such as finches, juncos, and titmice, without them getting frightened by the squirrels.

Pros:
Durable, Good Value, High Quality
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

The feeder is attractive and it absolutely deters squirrels and larger birds...but I have even seen some of the smaller birds having difficulty too. And I was saddedned to see a gorgeous cardinal give up after a brave attempt. So far I haven't seen my regular finches or titmice, so it's too soon for me to tell if this is the exact feeder I need. But if not, then I will definitely order another style from you. I do like your products and service very much. I am always pleased with the nice items I order from you.

Not as good as the globe feeder
By cinnamonfernVerified Purchaser from Boston on 11/4/2008
Pros:
Durable, Good Value, High Quality
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Lantern Cage Birdfeeder:

I thought this feeder would be like the globe feeder that I'd had before, but instead of holes in the tube, all the seed drops to the tray at the bottom, then it falls to the ground. Because of this tray, the large birds like starlings can get to the seed and they scare away the smaller birds. I've ordered the globe feeder again and will donate this or store it.
