Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

I was thrilled to see the cattail feeders in your catalog and ordered a set. When placed for use, the stem is extremely flimsy and does not support the weight of the filled compartment. Also the threading to join the two sections is so minimal that mine have come unscrewed with squirrels and larger birds trying to access the seeds. Had to put a larger tube over it to give it support. Major design flaw took attractiveness away, sorry I gave some as gifts and had to send out my own "repair" kits. Embarrassing.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

I love the look of the feeder, but as noted, it is awkward to fill. Aside from that, my biggest issue was that the leaves were not very sturdy and once a squirrel discovered the feeder (inevitably!), he sat on the leaf and it bent. It is only a matter of time before it breaks off from the greedy squirrels. I've stopped putting seed in it (sadly), but it does look lovely in the garden.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

Awesome accent to your garden and fun to watch the songbirds feed from the cattail feeder. However, they are difficult to fill because the bar inside that holds the lid in place limits the pouring space. I had to invent an attachment for filling the feeder, but using a TP roll and cutting two grooves that match the middle bar. This creates a cylinder pours spaces so the seeds do not fall or jam from hitting the center bar. Seeds do still fall out from the wires as you fill them, there is no way to prevent that fact. Squirrels also can reach up easily to eat from them. They will chew the lower wires and create a larger opening, therefore I have had to patch them a few times. Over all they look great and the birds do love them as do the squirrels!

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

Birds love it, especially goldfinches and cardinals. Best if feeder is tilted slightly, rather than straight up.

Black oil sunflower seeds work best. I cup my hand around opening and pour seeds into feeder from plastic cup. OK if a few seeds fall to ground.

Screw-in base is weak and poorly designed. Thus, I don't use it. Instead, I use duct tape to attach the feeder section to 6-ft green garden stake. Birds prefer taller feeder, and it discourages most squirrels and chipmunks. However, occasional raccoon will bend pole over.

This is our second set of feeders. I love the way they look, but unfortunately they are not squirrel-proof or javelina-proof. Our first set had leaves broken off and eventually the top/feeder. Possibly could have sautered but like them so much I merely bought another set.

They look nice, but they are very hard to fill with bird seed. I had them up for about 24 hrs before the squirrels knocked them over and ate all the bird seed. I don't think you can stop this from happening??? They were also somewhat flimsy near the joint where they had to be screwed together. [*]

Attractive along our pond bank, overlooking natural cattails.

    Needs drainage holes.

    Finish wears off.

Heads and leaves are damaged easily. Raccoons bent the head of one feeder and a couple of leaves were broken off the others.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

There's a bar under the cap that the cap screws into, leaving very little room to pour seed. Took two of us and a funnel to fill them. I bought average black sunflower seeds and they fall right through. The house finches liked them. Never saw the goldfinches eating from these feeders, but they were empty within a day. Sparrows loved the spilled seed (I'm trying to avoid attracting sparrows). I guess I'll leave them empty until winter when the birds need supplemental food. Wish I'd been smart and bought just one of these instead of the three pack.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

The Cattail feeders look wonderful, and hold mixed seed very well. However, there were rainy days during a week when we were away from home, and we came back to germinated seed in the bottom of the feeder cages. Water was caught in the bottom cup of the cage, unable to drain. We drilled small holes in the cups, enabling drainage, and the feeders have been perfect. Perhaps the manufacturer could drill some holes for us consumers and make their product even better!

This is my second set, since one of them from the first set broke. But that was after two years of harsh MN weather. I love how they change colors with some "weathering" as well.

One of them in the second set had one area of the screw threading that was stripped, so not sure how long that will hold up. I just didn't want to bother with sending it back, and then not having a complete set.

    The birds love them.

The bird feeders are original and look good on display in the garden, but are a flimsier construct than I anticipated. The grating is also larger than I thought and I have difficulty when adding seed to fill it up before seed falls out the sides. It is also very rainy here and I am concerned that the parts may rust given enough exposure.

    Seed falls through too easily
By kittenVerified Purchaser from Houston, Texas on 2/9/2009

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

This was very well made and looks to be durable, and it is, if anything, better looking in person. But.... the seeds come out too easily. Maybe large kernel dried corn, suet and seed would work. I will try to overlap a second mesh to prevent the seed from just pouring out, or will put decorative glass chips or marbles and use it as an ornament only.

Attracts yellow finches, cardinals, and other birds that like sunflower seeds. Hard to fill without spilling some seeds on the ground, but that's OK because it attracts more birds and keeps the squirrels from climbing up. The only real problem I have had was that raccoons unscrewed the top section full of seeds and carried it off! I bought three new ones and plan to use them one-at-a-time.

The cattail feeders are lovely and sturdy. Haven't studied the usefulness as bird feeders because the ground was frozen when they arrived. Forsee they may be problematic regarding invading squirrels but will be worth it because of the aesthetic appeal. Gave four stars rather than 5 only because I haven't yet observed the bird-appeal.

I have given all three to family members and they think they are the greatest gift. The cattail bird feeders are easy to fill and easy to clean. Plus you can stick them anywhere in the ground or in pots. I would recommend them to anyone who love watching and feeding birds.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

These are nice thistle feeders, but if you have ingenious squirrels in your garden that won't take no for an answer, they will try anything to shake seeds out. But, they don't have to be used just for thistle! One can put nesting material such as pet hair and small bits of string in there as an attractive way to make these materials available to the birds. It's best to start doing that in late winter/early spring and continue through mid to late summer. Some birds build several nests through the season and may need to add materials as they hatch several clutches of chicks. And these are very pretty to have in the garden near a water feature.

The only problem I had with this product is that black oil sunflower seeds go through the screen. When I fill the feeders a lot of the seeds drop to the ground. I am assuming that this feeder is made for larger sunflower seeds.

They are beautiful! I have them in a garden patch at my summer house (on a lake) and they are truly fine-looking. However, the squirrels knock them over and the 'leaves' are mostly already off because of them. I'm not even filling them anymore, just using them as a decoration.

The design worked in well with the new garden we put in this summer. Not a good experience with the whole Sunflower seeds suggested. The squirrels were all over the cattail feeders in no time. The seeds in the bottom of the holder molded and sprouted. Quite a mess.

We just use them as yard art and not as birdfeeders.

This feeder is really pretty, easy to set up and easy to fill. The top seems pretty squirrel proof, but the chipmunks always manage to empty the feeder rapidly. It isn't easy to clean-the seeds left at the bottom don't always come out easily and when filling, there is a lot of waste with the seeds falling out of the holes and creates a mess on the ground

These seed holders are so cute. My only problem is I have a ton of squirrels in my area and I have yet to find a way to combat the cute little critters from eating the bird food.

The Birds Just Love These Feeders! They attract all kinds of birds and they love to cling to them. Then off they fly to a nearby branch to eat their treat and then back for more. Lots of fun to watch.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

Sunflower seeds fall right out. We tried peanuts which seemed to work but the racoons like them too. They took the cage top off of one of them and carried it away. They also bent up the leaves.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

We live in a multi-level house and are afforded amazingly satisfying views of birds (and squirrels!) through our windows as they feed from these decorative feeders, less than a foot away!

The only negative is that squirrels will hang onto the feeder cages and, eventually, their weight can snap the heads right off. It would take a long time, but if you've got a spot welder, then you're in business for ever.

Worth everything for its beauty, functionality and landscaping design. We really love them.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

This product was a gift for a friend and she really likes them. The only issue is the difficulty filling them. The entire cap should be threaded, but instead there is a cross beam that goes across the top of the cattail's body for a stud in the top to thread into. This makes filling them a slow process. I fashioned a funnel to make it a little easier, but if you have to fill them everyday like she does it's a bit of a hassle.

Comments about Cattail Feeders, Set of 3:

These were great until the animals attacked them at night--either raccoons or opossums. They bent them all trying to get the seed out--and the stemns broke off of them. It was a shame as the woodpeckers and chickadees loved eating from them. If these were made with more heavy duty, very sturdy stems I would definitely buy them again. If you don't have animals prowling at night these are nice.
