Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I got this product based on affordability and user recommendation. The only thing that I worried about was some reviews mentioned bowing or the fact that they were flimsy. I decided to give them a try anyway.

I am very satisfied with the product. They are not at all flimsy, nor do they bow. (Plastic support brackets that extend from the top of the back of box to top of the front are included...it eliminates any potential for bowing). Also, I figured those who commented on bowing as an issue, must have spaced the support brackets too far apart. Anyway, if you are concerned about bowing...don't be.

These boxes are attractive, sturdy, and they hold a lot of plant material. The watering system is wonderful. My plants are truly thriving.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

No longer have to water every day, which is great, but manufacturer should use a better quality of plastic to justify the price. The first time I picked one up to attached to my railing, the edges broke. Also, the "adjustable" mounting brackets do not really fit a wrought iron rail as tightly as it should. Made more for traditional wood porch/deck railing. Would recommend to a friend with instructions to be gentle when setting up.

I just installed 2 of these windowboxes and was very happy until I discovered that they require 4 screws each to attach them to my deck railing and the screws were not included. So I had to go to [...] to get the screws- I think it is pretty cheesy to not include these minor items even if it brought the cost up by a dollar or two.

Check the PDF Mounting Instructions
By robertdt from Greer, SC on 3/18/2011
Describe Yourself:

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

This looks good, but better read the PDF on Installation. It says it comes with steel mounting brackets, but the PDF says "Check with your local hardware store to find the mounting hardware that's right for your house." So, it only comes with SOME of the Mounting Brackets, not all. Looks like a good product, and I have always gotten good results from Gardener's Supply, but I would have been extremely upset had I ordered this expecting to put it up right out of the box. Didn't want to rate this, because the product might be great, but, I could not submit it without doing so. Based on the misleading specifications I had to give it a low rating.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I have two of these on my front portch rail and love them. Not only does the resevoir mean that I don't have to check for dryness every time I come into the house, the fact that the reservoir HOLDS the water means that I don't have over-flow issues on my nice portch (which I do when I'm trying to get a plant wet and accidently give it too much water). The little "thermometer" water level indicator prevents this error.
Just bought a pair for my mom for her deck. One arrived with the water reservoir cap "leash" broken. Seems like a weak link.
One other suggestion - the very sturdy mounting brackets should be an option (as wheels are for planters). We are setting these boxes on broad rails and stands and do not need all that hardware. It is very heavy to ship and getting steel to the recyclying center is a hassle.

I am using the windowboxes along my deck railing. The brackets are screwed to the railing and provide adequate support for the planted boxes. They are in a full sun location and I have always had trouble keeping previous planters watered. It doesn't look like that will be a problem this year. I have them planted and waiting for the plants to grow.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

At the end of the growing season last year, I took down the two wooden window boxes I'd had up under my barn windows, and found carpenter ants had taken up residence in one of them. So this year, I looked for new boxes and purchased these. We had a very warm, dry summer, and the local government imposed some watering restrictions - but in these boxes, my plants looked good all summer. That is, those that survived initial planting. I went away for a few days not long after planting, leaving water in the reservoirs. But one plant died and another partially died. The instructions said to water from the top right after planting, but based on my experience, that should be done the first couple of weeks or so, until the root systems are established. Also, at the end of the season, these boxes were difficult to take down. Although I hadn't watered them in some time, nature did, and the plants had ceased taking up much water. That meant the water reservoirs were pretty full and the boxes were very heavy. Lastly, I don't know how I'll keep rodents out of them this winter, because the water gauges stick up over the boxes and I won't be able to cover them as well as I could the old ones.

They are great for the gardener like me who sometimes forgets to water her plants!! I purchased two in early September and hurried and transplanted some near dead plants from my dried out hanging baskets. They are not just surviving, they are thriving! I purchased the 39 inch ones for my deck rails and just bought two more. It was well worth the money for me. I did put a lower grade landscape fabric under the dirt. I did for other planters in the past so my dirt wouldn't run out the drainage holes so I did with these. Not sure if I needed to. The only downside is I have to wait until spring to plant in the other four I bought. I love these.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

We have four of these and one of them was damaged and cracked due to accident, not use.
I really like the fact that in the hottest part of summer I only have to water about once a week. In addition, I use the water retaining potting soil with Miracle Grow and the plants really thrive.
Right now I have one veggie plant in each box along with the flowers. We're up on the second floor so people only see the flowers and we benefit from the fresh peppers, basil, and eggplant.
The one downside is that because of spout to pour the water and another piece on the other end it's sometimes difficult to jam in the plants you want. However, since it's only for the season I don't have to worry about them getting root bound.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I installed these for a client, on four windows at the front of his restaurant. They were missing the installation instructions, so I had to wing it - a frustrating and annoying process. The boxes, which are extremely heavy when the reservoirs are filled, are supported by just two flimsy brackets, with nothing holding them up from the bottom. When I returned the day after installing and planting them, one had fallen off the wall entirely, (plants dying on the ground) and one was hanging by a thread. I ended up taking all four of them down and attaching the brackets to pieces of decking board, which were screwed into the wall. They have held so far, but the client HATES the decking boards behind the boxes and is not happy with the boxes' overall appearance. (I bought the white ones to match the building's trim.)
These boxes absolutely need more support - from the bottom - so the wall does not bear the entire load. This entire experience has been frustrating, especially since this job was for a high profile client in my community.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I bought two of these in 2008 so I'm on my third season with them. Don't skimp on the potting mix you use in these. I highly recommend using the self-watering container mix that they sell because many other mixes are too heavy and won't dry. Waterlogging has been a problem for the plants I put in boxes with heavier potting media, even with the overflow holes that are supposed to prevent waterlogging.

I would very much like to see Gardeners.com offer replacement water meters for these, as one of mine broke completely and the others don't seem to be measuring the water properly after a couple of years. The fill tube covers are also relatively breakable and one of mine has gone missing (maybe they should sell separate replacements for those too).

I purchased 9 of these boxes . . . 5 of the 31", 2 of the 39" and 2 of the 23". People have said our house looks like something out of a Thomas Kinkade painting, and neighbors even bring their guests over to see it. I normally can kill a silk flower, but these boxes work so well that I feel like a master gardener. The only issue we had is that my hubby had to modify the brackets slightly so as not to damage our vinyl siding.

The plants grew beautifully and very easy and quick to maintain. I wasn't able to bring the boxes in this winter and they weathered the NH winter very well, although I would protect them under idea circumstances.

I bought these window boxes for a client who owns a restaurant. The instructions and one of the water gauges were missing, and they were ridiculously hard to assemble. Once I got them up, with help from a carpenter friend, they were still rather flimsy. I can only hope they don't fall off the wall.
I love the idea of the reservoir, but this design needs some serious tweaking - maybe more supportive brackets. I am very disappointed in these.

We built a retirement home near our parents with a porch. I have never been a gardener over the years as we moved with my husband's job, but when we moved back home- with the history of my mom and grand and greatparent's gardens- I had to try. Easter weekend, my 2 youngest grandchildren,my 94 year old Mom and I bought plants and transplanted them in these boxes. A month later, they look great. I love these. I know I am suppose to put them up for the winter, but with the mild climate here, I think I can use them with pansies and have year round color.

I can't give these 5 stars because I'm not using them as window boxes, hence, I'm not using the mounting hardware included in the purchase. I'm using them to line a pressure treated box attached to my deck. They are holding one of my herb gardens, the one with the basil in it. Basil needs lots of water, and even though I've not been really consistent checking the water level and adding on a daily basis, the basil is really lush. I also used the soil sold for self-watering containers and remembered to put some fertilizer in the soil this time around, which is, I'm sure, adding to this. But, the basil likes water and it's doing really, really well.

This is a great windowbox! I LOVE to garden, but living in an apartment with just a small balcony gives me little room to do so. This planter has given me the opportunity to add a few additional plants (actually, transplant some herbs in dire need of a larger pot) without crowding the walking area of my balcony. This self-watering windowbox is just as good as its bigger cousin, the self-watering patio planter, at keeping my plants watered when I travel for work. I love this planter!

The ONLY trouble I had with the planter was that I did not have an electric drill to aid me in attaching the planter to the balcony railing. However, the offense is more with the wood of the railing rather than the planter. :)

The combination of 31" and 39" window boxes completed the country cottage look in the front and side of our home. We think they are very attractive and I don't have to worry about leaving the flowers for a weekend or even for a short vacation. These window boxes are a great boon for my small garden. I have recommended them to my friends. Special thanks to Heather who reminded me to wet the soil before planting. Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

We now have a total of six self-watering window boxes on our deck railing and love them. They are filled with a mixture of herbs and flowers. The herbs are handy right outside of our kitchen, close the the BBQ, and the flowers add a profusion of color that can be seen from our living room window. The Cardinal Climber plant is a Hummingbird magnet and trails and along the entire deck rail. The best part is you don't have to water everyday!

Bought these for my windows to replace other boxes that were shabby from weather. I'm excited to see how the new ones work with the water level indicator and the self watering feature. Should be able to look out the window and see when it's time to add water to the tray! The size is perfect for my window widths and after I contacted you for directions, the brackets that came with them now make sense!

I bought 12 of these 31" window boxes for my country home windows seven years ago. I have so many people compliment me on my boxes. From April till October I have geraniums, million bells, trailing verbenum, sweet potato vines, ivy, and asparagus ferns in the sunny location boxes and impatiens, coleus, begonias and ivy in the shade location boxes in different colors each year. In the fall, I add mums and leave the ivy trailing on the sides. In the winter, I add winter greens, ball ornaments, an outdoor automatic candle and a bow on the front of the box for a cozy Christmas look! Thanks for making my window boxes a perfect addition to my country home!

I bought two of these at the beginning of the summer for our lakeside cottage. The water-fill tube system and large reservoir kept the plants from drying out when we were not there to water. All plants are healthy and lush. These window boxes perform much better than the ones I had been using for the past several years.
The bronze color matches the cottage perfectly!

We have these planters on our front porch, and our back yard deck. They are in both sun and shade and are a great item for busy gardeners who don't want to water daily. They have a "button" that lets you know when to add water, and are attractive and durable. We've had our first set for over 5 yrs. and they look brand new. New gardeners can take the guess work out of their watering chores and grow fantastic containers!!

I mounted four of these on a porch front railing and I was very impressed with how solid the mounting hardware was. I haven't put any water in the boxes in over a week now and the soil on the top is still moist.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I bought 4 of these in Loden for our back porch windows. They were easy to install and look great against the wall. I have a big yard and work full-time so was concerned about keeping yet more potted plants watered enough during the summer. So far, these plants look great and I fill the reservoir about 1x/week. I'm sure that will be more frequent as it gets warmer but a lot better than 2x/day. The one con I have is that the water level indicators do not work. When filling, the indicator goes up and water starts dripping out the bottom. When you stop watering the indicator goes down. So, it's a guess how much water there is.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I ordered three window boxes. [...] I've never emptied widow boxes or taken them off in the fall. The instructions say to do this and I suspect it is so that water won't stay in them, freeze and crack the boxes. So this is an extra chore and I think you should mention it in the product description so people know that before buying. Can the window box design be changed to have a bottom drain, accessible from the outside?

I absolutely LOVE my windowboxes! I had been looking online at some PVC/Vinyl boxes but was put off by the high price of some ($125 up to $200 each). When I found these I was estatic, plus the watering system is just wonderful! They really make keeping any plants alive easy. I have a busy life, and being able to fill up the resivour once or twice a week is great. They look just as nice as the other high priced windowboxes out there, and are even better because these are self watering. I put geraniums and bacopa in mine and it made a stunning display. Many of my neighbors have commented on them. The brackets are sturdy and easy to install, and the boxes held a good ammount of soil. A+ Product!

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

Installed these along my balcony railing and they look great combined with the wood facade covers that Gardener's supply also offers. The self watering feature appears to keep the plants watered for approx a week between waterings. I used the self-watering soil that GS also offers and it was a perfect fit and gave me just enough room to add some plants and seeds. The combination of the soil, box and wood cover is really attractive and offers a lot of room for plants. Only drawback was that the pictures make the boxes appear a little larger than they are on the internet. Just take measurements up front and ensure you know how large the boxes will be.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

It is too early to install my windowbox in our Michigan climate. This box is good looking and very nice quality. It came with several hangers so it will be easy to insall on my brick wall. I am looking forward to the self watering feature,as we have many dry periods in June, July and August and I hope it will be easier to control wilting planter boxes this summer.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

Self-watering planters normally leave an air space between the bottom of the soil and the maximum water level in the reservoir. Water is drawn upwards by smaller pillars of saturated soil which extend down into the reservoir, or by absorbent wicks. The air space insures that the soil is aerated, not water-logged. This planter design is missing these features and may experience problems because of it.

1) There is no mechanism for wicking water out of the bottom of the reservoir and into the soil. If the water level drops below the grating, the soil will dry out even if the reservoir is mostly full. Roots will eventually grow into the reservoir to mitigate this problem, but until they do, most of the reservoir capacity is basically worthless. Keep it carefully topped off until the plants are established. You could also add your own wicks to overcome this problem.

2) There are internal overflow holes to prevent the planter from becoming a swamp when it rains. The holes are roughly a quarter-inch ABOVE the grating that holds the soil. So, if the planter is full of water the bottom of the soil will be completely water-logged. This is undesirable but, due to the lack of a wicking mechanism, it is the only way for the soil and water to meet.

I use my planters year-round and subject them to very rainy winters. I will not be buying any more of this type due to the problems described above. On the one I do have, I intend to lower the level of the drains and add some wicks.

Still, they do have some strong points.
- I was initially interested in these planters because they are compact enough, and boxy enough, that they do make good window boxes and deck railing planters. Most self-watering designs are too massive to mount anywhere.
- Compact self-watering planters often have small reserviors and can run out of water surprisingly quickly in hot weather. This design has an unusually large water capacity for its size and can handle longer periods of neglect.

I have 2 windowboxes I bought 4 years ago, and love! I bought 4 more this year, giving 2 as gifts. I love the low maintenance, watering twice a week in the heat of the Texas summer. In the fall, I water once a week. I tried traditional windowboxes-it was hard to water enough! These are so low maintenance! I love the new water gauge!

Discovered this product becuase my boss uses them on her deck railings and they look great! I use them on my front windows as window boxes and my spring flowers are still blooming and its the middle of Oct. It gives the perfect amount of water and there is a gauge to easily read when you have watered the plants enough. because of the rainy season we have had, I think I have actually hadto water them only a few times. its great for someone who doesnt always remember to water the plants every day!

I decided to try these self watering windowboxes's this year since I was really busy and was afraid that my plants would die without daily watering. I was so please, I had to water about 2 times a week compared to daily. The only con with this self watering windowbox, was having to mount this on my deck, it took some time. It was not a quick, screw here attach there. So anticipate a little work when it comes to the attachment, but be reassured that you will be thankful when it is complete. I am going to try to place mums in there for the fall and see how that turns out, can't wait. LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!

Well, we'll see. For the past several years I've sought a solution to planters around the sign at our church. Every time the flowers have pretty much dried up and looked ratty long before fall. It's tough to keep things from drying out in the extreme in the hot, sunny location, despite watering on Sundays and mid-week. If even this doesn't work for live flowers, at least it's large enough, and good-looking enough to use as a generous window box evergreen arrangement at Christmas time.

I use spanish moss on top of the soil and around each flower to keep the base of the plants shaded. I get comments from all my neighbors and even strangers, saying they've never seen more beautiful window boxes and they all want to know my secrets and how I keep the flowers looking so good, even in the scorching sun and when the temperatures are in the 90's. Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

These boxes provide a great option for someone who wants to enjoy flowers in their apartment windows without constantly worrying about plants dying. I'm using these in an apartment building. I go for at least 3 days at a stretch without filling up the reservoir in these windowboxes even though they get full sun all day long. The reservoir can hold a LOT of water - it's a really good mechanism. The only drawback that I can think of is the gauge that moves up and down indicating whether or not the reservoir is full. Mine rarely crosses the "Max" marking even after I have poured a ton of water into the reservoir. A good indicator if your gauge is not working very accurately is to fill water to the point where the water starts dripping out of the bottom of the windowbox. The installation can be a little tricky - definitely use a measuring tape to center the box in the brackets. All in all, this is DEFINITELY worth the money spent on it.

Overall, I think they are a good product -- they make it possible to have plants in full sun on my deck in DC, which otherwise would be a problem during the dog days. They are not as easy to install as billed, and I had to get a handywoman to help me and she needed to call a friend to assist as well. We ended up using only one set of brackets. Also, I only use the reservior during hot days, I think to use the reservior all the time might not be good for plants and could lead to mold...

[...] cracked at the bottom and water leaked out. The water guages weren't always accurate. Ordinary, less expensive boxes would have yielded the same result.

Perfect window fit with adjustable brackets.
Best looking windowboxes in the neighborhood. The self watering feature is great feature when you will be away for a few days. Plants look great all spring, summer and fall. Flowers and vines flourish with great root formation. You get beautiful plant growth and blossoms.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I'm using these planters on the railing of my deck. As they are exposed to the elements, and Washington is very wet, I'm afraid they are getting water logged. Some of the plants have died back because of oversaturation. If we can get a few more hot days maybe they will come out of it. The principle sounds good but the application in a wet spring is questionable.

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

These planters are great overall. Water indicators are accurate ...until the plants get large, now they don't read as well, but if you water thoroughly, they do still hold the water days longer than traditional boxes. I find I need to deep water every 3 days, on average. It has been a very hot and humid season so far in New England. Overall , this is a great product.

My plants seem to do much better than the coir baskets I had before. They don't have to be watered all of the time. The only thing I haven't found as useful is the gauge that measures the water, I am not sure they work like they are suppose to? Otherwise they are great!

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

Very attractive, holds many plants. I use it on a sunny ledge inside for a kitchen herb garden. I did not realize that it would leak if i filled it too much and it ruined the ledge where i had it--probably not an issue if used outside. I do find that fruit flies are an issue, perhaps due to excess moisture, but i plan to add sand as a top layer and see how this works.

I am not a beginning gardener, just a lazy one. The self watering windowboxes and containers are great because I don't have to tend to my plants daily. Even in the hot sun I may not need to add water for 2 or 3 days. I started with 2 planters adding 3 window boxes the next year and 2 more this year. I would recommend them to everyone!

Comments about 31" Self-Watering Windowbox:

I brought 2 of these about 4 years ago. Since I plant pansies in the spring, I brought 2 more so I could pull the ones with pansies to put on my porch and use the new for summer flowers. As long as I plant the pansies in the front of the box, it works great. Unless it is really hot, I can water only once a week.
