i just added two of these containers to my rooftop garden, and each one has two tomato plants. it gets pretty hot up there in the summer so i'm looking forward to seeing how they do. the 4 gallon water reserve has been great so far. i need to water my other plants far more often than i do the tomatoes in these containers!

I recently moved to a condo with a balcony and bought 2 of these. I had one for several years and loved that it didn't have to be watered every day. It lasted for several years, stored in an unheated garage during Iowa winters. I saw a similar product at a local gardening store and it was more expensive and flimsy. No question that I would encourage purchasing this product.

We have two of these we have used in the brutal Arizona sun for at least 7 or 8 years for growing tomatoes, and they're still going strong. This year we purchased an additional one. Last year we put drip system emitters in the bottoms--still had to add additional water every few days, but in 100+ dry weather that's not surprising.

Gave it 4 stars because what I received was different than the planter described in the catalog I used to order. The one I ordered (now discontinued) had a fill tube that would allow filling from the top and had a visual gauge to show how much water was in the reservoir. This would have allowed filling without over filling. The one received has just a fill port on the side and you have to either guess how full it is or put in water until it flows back out of the port. I'm using the planter because it's a pain to send stuff back. I do like the planter's soil/water capacity but can't say I'm completely satisfied with it's design.

I cannot recommend this product enough! Will strongly suggest adding casters for mobility. Also consider your climate before adding moisture retentive soil to these planters. Always make sure you have removed the overflow drainage caps on top of the tall, slender cones inside the planters.

Bought the tomato success kit last season, loved how well my plants did. The neighbors were impressed as well. Bought an additional container this season for some other veggies, I'm sure I will be pleased. Love that they don't dry out fast as with other containers.

Have just bought my third planter and highly recommend getting it with frame for plant support. Like the new access to the reservoir. It is easier to fill and the new frame is easier to assemble. We love having it on our deck to watch our tomatoes grow.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
WE have used these planters for many years, especially when growing tomatoes. They are easy to use, are easy to add water to, and they are durable year after year.

I now have 31 of these, some are over 10 years old. The older ones had a water hole on the side that some varmits chewed but I was able to repair. I like the new design much better.

Using for a small herb garden on my deck. Great size for growing multiple herbs in one container.

You can go off on vacation confident that your plants will look just as beautiful when you return as they did when you left. (Tip: they are very heavy when filled, so do not fill the reservoir until you have placed them where you want them.)
