I live on dry plains and it is so appreciated to have a planter that does not demand water daily! The 20" (large) planter is decorative and the plants thrive because the bottom reservoir provides a consistent source of water.

Comments about Cortina Planters, 20":

Very attractive and sturdy. The self watering mechanism does not seem to work very well, however. I have used other self watering containers and they provide a means to wick water out of the botton up to where the soil is. These do not, so I added some strips of heavy duty woven webbing to go across the platform that supports the earth and then dangle into the water below. I also drilled a hole in the side at the top of the water reservoir so that it would not become mud in a rain storm, as I have them outside on a patio. Even with that, the water below does not seem to drop very rapidly, so I am watering from above rather than into the tube. They do provide a stick for measuring how much water is in the reservoir. A diagram shows plants poking roots down into the reservoir, but it takes quite a while for plants to grow that big, and some plants never do put roots down that far. When trying to decide on size, they are smaller than you expect because they measure from the outside of a very wide lip, so subtract several inches when calculating the inside space.

Reallly beautiful pot for my giant indoor house plant! ---But, the fill tube was easily two inches too short--perhaps it was a one size fits all but fit better on the smaller pots. I bought a plastic florescent light tube cover which I cut off and glued to the top of the original fill tube and placed the lid on that. ---Seems to work quite well now.

Dead plant pulled out today
By CherylVerified Purchaser from wolverine lake, mi on 7/14/2010
Pros:
Attractive Design

Comments about Cortina Planters, 20":

I purchased this product Memorial weekend because of the water reservoir feature. It is now July 15th and I have pulled the dead plant out and refilled the pot with a purchased 10 inch potted annual which I kept in the pot and merely set it inside the container. When I pulled the dead plant out the soil was moist and wet beneath the water reservoir but the plant it self died from lack of water. I wasn't able to keep the soil above the reservoir moist. Maybe this product needs better directions. Was I suppose to continually water the plant from the top in addition to the reservoir? If so, then what is the purpose of the reservoir? I had hoped a once a week watering would be enough to keep the plant alive.

These planters are easy to put together right out of the box. You don't need stones in the bottom of these like you do in most other planters. Pop open the filler tube to check the water level. I have used mine now for 3 years and everything is just like the day I got them. They are stored in a shed in the winter, brought out in the summer. They are easy to move around once plants are in.I have put 'Elephant Ears' in them and they do great. Not only 'would' I recommend them to friends, I have already.

Cons:
Flimsy, Tube too short
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:

Comments about Cortina Planters, 20":

I have always been pleased with the products from Gardener's Supply until this one. The water tube that goes down into the reservoir is TOO short. At best, it comes up to ground level (and that's if you don't put too much soil in the container). This makes it almost impossible to use the tube for watering since soil will fall into it. I bought two of these...we'll see how the plants hold up through our hot Missouri summers.

This is the second Cortina Planter that we have. Our Gardenia was rooted from a cutting and transplanted into the 16" Cortina Planter 3 years ago. We transplanted the gardenia into the 20" planter this spring and it is happy to be back outside on our deck. We would bring the planter inside during the winter. These planters are great. We started a Dwarf Key lime tree in the 16" pot this spring.

Cons:
Flimsy, Inside lining peeled off, Very thin layer peels off
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Cortina Planters, 20":

I bought these pots (6 of them) to use in front of our church placing them on top of brick pedestals. As we were filling with dirt, noticed that the inside was peeling off. This was a thin plastic layer that was the brick color and underneath was plain black plastic pot. At [$] a pot this was quite an expensive purchase for the church and, based on previous experience with Gardeners Supply, I expected a first class quality product - these pots are not. I am very disappointed, especially since the Church has already filled the pots with flowers.

I bought these pots for myers' lemon trees. I realized upon set-up that the water reservoir occupies close to 50% of the volume. leaving me with too shallow a place to plant them. This pot would be best utilized for plants that can be in 12 inches of soil at maturity, such as annuals and herbs. No trees or bushes.

Comments about Cortina Planters, 20":

We purchased eight of these pots at this time last year. We thought we would give it a full year before evaluating. Along with loosing at least 1/4 of the pot to a water resevior the water level measuring stick never moved all year. We had small fruit trees planted in them and decided to transplant into a bigger pot (one without the watering system). After replanting and disassembling the pots we noticed that all of the water containers were still full of water and packed with algee. Which is why the float never measured the water properly. I would highly not recomend this product for the reasons of loosing to much pot space for the water container and also for never watering the trees like was stated

Comments about Cortina Planters, 20":

I bought some of these planters last year for my clematis, which I found out shuold be in pots at least 18" in diameter. I don't know how useful the water reservoir is here since we live in a fairly moist climate, but I can imagine circumstances in which they would come in handy. The pots are very nice looking, lightweight and lasted through the record snows we had last winter. Much better pots than what you would find in the big box store and much better value than the garden center.

I purchased the same planter in '08 in an aqua color, which isn't available this year. Ordered same planter in "moss" this year, and was disappointed to see that it lacks the glossy finish my '08 purchase has. Moss looks cheap, does not look like pottery. Glossy finish looks $$ and stays cleaner. Unfortunately, product description lacks detail about gloss finish vs. none in some colors.

Comments about Cortina Planters, 20":

The container and accompanying saucer are very attractive in design and color. It is lightweight as advertised - which makes it easy to use. I have a gardenia plant I planned to transplant into my new pot, and have, but the pot is shorter than I thought it would be, so it is not the perfect fit I thought it would be. I would suggest on product description, you mention the dimensions of the container. However, I am very satisfied with the product and will definitely purchase from Gardener's Supply again.

Planted two pots. Placed them in the flowerbed. Used pots since the inground plants freeze durning the winter. I can place these in a wheel barrow or on a dolly and bring to the patio out of the weather. So the plants won't die!!!

Directions for drilling the holes for drainage are not clear. On bottom drill here--in paper work drill 1" up from the sides? Which one??????

The fill tube is too close to the center of pot. Had to plant the plant off center of the pot or destroy the roots!!!

These containers look really nice. They are light weight so even with soil and plants you can still move them around. I used the water reservoir with them which does somewhat limit the amount of space for soil. (like you couldn't plant a tree in them) But, without them we wouldn't have plants left when we came home from vacation. I get compliments all the time on my beautiful "ceramic" pots! Little do they know!

These are some of the nicest planters I have ever used. This is my third year with some of them and the colors still look bright and clean. With the selfwatering system included in these pots I was so impressed with my plants that I either converted my old pots with the self watering inserts from Garden Supply or bought new self watering containers. Now everything I have looks great and I don't have to worry if I am out of town for a few days.

I bought several of these planters last year to see how I liked them. I bought another this year and will probably buy more next year. I use them for a variety of annuals and have them on my deck. It really cuts down on the amount of watering needed and is great when we go away for a few days.

Dear Gardener's -

I am a real gardening novice and thought I'd try contatiner planting first to see how it goes. I ordered 3 20" and 3 16" 'Self-Watering Cortina Planters' from you, blue, yellow & garnet. Just assembled & planted them this past weekend. Assembly was extremely easy. The colorful pots are now full of colorful flowers and my front yard is cheerful & bright - viola! Am looking forward to a summer of blooms ahead.

I have a spot on the west side of a large garage that was in need of some color. The area can get very hot on a summer afternoon - so I needed a planter that can help plants stand up to the sun... I created an arrangement of red, yellow and blue. Looks great!

Beautiful pots that make anyone look like a professional gardner. Makes taking a short vacation not a problem, as it 'babysits' itself and when you return your plants are thriving. The size allows for beautiful arrangement of variety of flowers and plants. Height allows for cascading plants. Blue color is quite dramatic at entrance of home. Quality of pot mimics the look of ceramic, but is a far superior product.

I really wasn't that impressed by the watering system - I'm not sure how the plants will fare in this container all summer - it is really difficult to tell if the well is filled - the tube and the end piece seem flimsy to me

I have a deck garden in Colorado where it's hot and dry. Last year's crops were not successful because once or twice a day watering was not adequate. I hope the self-watering feature will solve the problem! The containers are beautiful and the self-watering apparatus easy to use.

Last year planters worked out so well i ordered 3 more this spring. I planted small spruce in last year and annuals around the edges. this years planting are in and i am sure they will also do wonderful. Vacation houses need pots like these to water when you are gone. They are so easy to put together and look so nice. Great color selection.
