Comments about Standing Garden:

Very reasonable sized unit, easy to move in my opinion. Of course will be top heavy a little but certainly not easy to tip over in my experience. Easy to assemble. So far my plants are doing great. This winter will help to move plants inside easily.

Used for: city container gardening

What's great? Height, Attractive Design

What's not so great?

The water reservoir seems inadequately supported. Based on previous reviews, I purchased some large L shaped brackets and added my own support.

Also, I recommend not wasting $ on the casters. Once full with plants & water this is QUITE heavy and difficult to roll.

Comments about Standing Garden:

I am a female and not overly mechanically inclined & assembled one planter solo without any difficultly within approx 1/2 an hour. Based on reviews, I REINFORCED THE PLASTIC WATER RESERVOIR by purchasing some large L shaped brackets to add support underneath. So far no problems. The height of this planter is very convenient.
I do not feel that the casters are an especially wise investment b/c when filled with soil/water it's nearly impossibly to roll the planter.

assembly issues
By Stream FollowerVerified Reviewer from San Francisco, CA on 3/27/2011
Pros:
Attractive Design
Cons:
Difficult To Assemble
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Standing Garden:

Assembly instructions are good. However, you really DO need to drill pilot holes in the wood. Otherwise, it is extremely difficult to drive the screws by hand, (and darn tough using a drill).

Frustrating part is that the pre-drilled holes in the long metal ledges, that you need to install for the self-watering floor to rest on, are not positioned properly. The holes are about an eighth of an inch too low, but they are close enough that you can't redrill them so that they line up properly! Since the metal ledges on the short ends of the planter come pre-installed, (and are a little higher), they end up supporting the bottom of the planter. I hope that with dirt and water in it, the plastic will deform enough to carry some weight on the sites as well - but I haven't filled mine yet, so that remains to be seen.

I hope it works out because I plan to use the planter to get flowers on my deck up high enough that they will attract butterflies. Plants in pots down below the deck rail are attractive to bees, but are out of sight and a little tight to work for butterflies.)

I reeally like the idea of being able to stand or sit to work. Also no weeds. Looked nice on the patio with herbs and flowers in it. I am thinking of getting another one to add this year.

Comments about Standing Garden:

My husband's knees are bad and thought he could use to plant some vegetables. Looks great and looks sensible but it is shorter than it looks in the picture The real problem is the instructions and the assembly took three of us with a cordless screwdriver and rubber mallet hours to assemble. The wood was not good quality with knots. There are openings between the boards so I expect the soil to leak out, also in the corners. I also got splinters. I'm generous to give two stars.
Disappointed.

Comments about Standing Garden:

We have had two of the standing gardens for two months and we have tomatoes, cucumbers and herbs in them. I think they are attractive and I have had no problem with dirt leaking or anything else. They solved my problem of having very little sunny spots on my property-now I am able to use my deck for vegetables. I was able to fit two (caged) tomatoes, one (staked) cucumber, a couple herbs (parsley and basil) in each, as well as marigolds and nasturtium around the edges. I love the self watering feature since I will be away a couple weeks this summer. I have wheels on both gardens and this works great for moving them around. I actually had lettuce growing in them in the spring and when it got warm, I wheeled them over to a shadier area.
I just received something in the mail from Garden Supply Co that is for the standing gardens in response to some problems people have had with dirt leaking. I have not yet looked at these, but I think they are some sort of wood block that will help prevent the problem. I have not had any problems at all so I will probably wait until after the season and then try to install them.

Comments about Standing Garden:

I am surprised at any negative comments, because I am thrilled with this product. It is attractive, perfect height, and on wheels it is movable. The self watering feature means that I can take a vacation without worrying! I have only been using it a couple of months, so I cannot say if it is durable. I bought two and have only put up one yet for spring veggies. I can't wait to put up the other to transplant some summer veggies and herbs into both.

We foolishly bought two of these. The bottom fell out of one this morning (lost all of my seedlings). We fear the second one will meet the same fate. Save your money.

Comments about Standing Garden:

I'll be interested to see how it holds up over the year and into additional seasons. The directions could have clearer diagrams, however it was not difficult to figure out or assemble. The self-watering system holds a lot of water, however the fill indicator does not work and I believe I have it assembled as designed and explained. The result is I have to water based on regular inspection. It is strong and light, easy to move when empty. Once filled you cannot move it. I purchased the separate rollers but I'm not convinced that they can be used without damaging or having to apply strength beyond my capacity. You really cannot "hammer" the rollers and force the connectors into place since the rollers are round and move. The unit is expensive and I originally figured that I would order three of them, but decided on one until I've tested it out. I do like it and I would cautiously recommend it to a friend.
