We’ve improved our most popular patio planters by adding a rolled rim and a top-fill port with a water level indicator. What we haven’t changed is the big, 4-gallon reservoir and our patented wicking system, the combination that outperforms garden-grown plants 2 to 1. make them easy to move around and fertilizing is as easy as ever: just mix a cup of our all-organic granular into the soil, or add a water-soluble fertilizer into the reservoir. With just a few square feet and a few minutes a week, you can grow juicy, red tomatoes, flavorful herbs and salad greens or an abundance of colorful flowers.

I planted tomatoes in one and am growing lettuce in the other. Looking forward to home grown produce considering the high prices at the grocery store
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
i love these planters! The topsoil in our area is very heavy. I use the Gardener's Supply bagged soil which aids rapid germination and root growth. Next week our city begins water rationing and predictions are for a droughty summer. Therefore, the self-watering aspect is perfect for us.

When I lived in a condo, I used these to grow tomatoes on the patio. I had tomatoes in mid-July here in Massachusetts. I bought these recently for growing veggies in the greenhouse this winter. I'll let you know how this works out.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Have a total of 4 containers; bought 2 last year and 2 more this year. So far have used them to grown lettuces, bell peppers, and marigolds. Minor problem, which is why I'm giving this product 4 out of 5 stars - keeping the little ball at the bottom of the refill tube from falling out. Overall good product.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I use three of them along with the tall Newbury Frames to hide my air conditioner. With trailing flowers in the planters you cannot see the air conditioner at all. Much nicer than a fence. Love them!!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
It's pretty close to perfect. It looks great, has a good capacity (but not so big that it's impossible to move) and the soil keeps evenly moist. My only quibble is that the drainage holes which must be opened for outdoor use to prevent rain flooding are not at all clearly labeled - they only have "H2O" written next to them, which is ambiguous at best. There is no diagram or instruction sheet which provides an extra clues here - I had to figure it out for myself. The holes to open are at the top of 2 cones which rise up into the soil bed.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought two green planters. I hope they hold their color better than the green Terrazza planters that have faded from deep green to pale green. Also, when the rim of one planter was momentarily bent, the shape recovered but there is a permanent white mark along the crease line.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
My only garden area has been loosing it's sunlight due to trees growing taller. I've moved my "garden" to my patio and the plants are doing great!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have my garden on my deck and so far we have nine of these planters with tomatoes, cucumbers, waxed beans, sugar peas and summer squash. They are easy to use and provide all the vegetables we can use, plus some to give away. I will keep adding until I run out of room. Adding the wheels and the cages makes them easy to push together and cover if frost is immenent, so I have been able to plant much earlier and have veggies before the end of June.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
At last I can be successful with growing some color spots for my patio. My geraniums and mums are doing well and I can't kill them from over or under watering them.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We left home for five days during this latest major heat wave...95 degrees, sunny and no rain in sight. I filled the reservoir the morning I left and watered the soil. When we got home the soil was still damp, the reservoir had some water left and my tomato plant looks great!!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I like the planters, my rosemary bush grows beautifully as well as my other herbs - so I don't always have to run out to the garden plot, I keep a supply of the herbs I most often use in the container on the back porch. Since the container is very heavy I bought the casters that is advertised with the container. First the cat. does not say that one doesn't need the little caps that come with the casters for this particular planter. Then if one doesn't need the caps, these casters are way too expensive at $9 [...] - I had I know this, I would have picked up a set of casters at the hardware store for half the price!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The old model works so much better re the self watering features--this one over fills, overflows and you have a real mess on your hands. No way to control the amount of water. The little spouts are ridiculous. I don't know what you were thinking.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I was ready to give up on gardening in containers, as my plants never did well. Thought I'd try one more time and ordered four self-watering patio planters. I now have a gorgeous flower garden for the first time ever. Even though it's been very dry this summer, my plants are lush and blooming enthusiastically. I certainly have to water oftener than weekly as they are in the afternoon sun, with very little rain to speak of. I do agree with those reviewers who say that the tube watering system is flimsy, and it should be improved, even if it increases the cost somewhat. However I have found an easy way to water--I purchased a large inexpensive funnel that is 8" in diameter with a 3" spout, and it fits in the tube and directs the water properly. I use a 2 gallon watering can, but this would work with a hose also. I also do some top watering with the sprinkler attachment on the can as it refreshes the plants in this dry weather.

I use these for growing tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, radishes and squash. This is my first time having a garden of any type, and these containers have been fabulous. My lettuce grows twice as fast compared to a regular containers. The tomatoes and squash are growing rapidly and look great. I love them!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I've never been able to grow tomatoes before... I always get victimized by blights, but thanks to careful spraying, seed selection, and placing a single tomato per pot, I am short days away from my first ever home-grown tomatoes.
The pots have been singularly remarkable because now that the plants are almost fully grown, they're syphoning down almost an entire reservoir of water each day. Clearly the message is that if I didn't have these self-watering planters, I would have shriveled, dried up, tomato plant ashes.
The cages weren't well thought-out in design, but I appreciate that they're coated and should last.
Before the first post-holiday weekend, I should be enjoying ripe, home-grown tomatoes for the first time in my life and for that, I will owe great thanks to these self-watering planters! Furthermore, I'm growing sweet peppers in two other planters and they're also going gang-busters. I will be buying at least one more next year.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We are using these for our vegetable growing, everything from carrots to squash. Soon we will have 8 of these producing fresh vegetables for our table.
The only thing that could be easier is the water level indicator installation.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have used these containers for years to grow mostly tomatoes and climbing cukes. I was even able to order replacement parts (the water gauges) after mine were stolen from my garage (even thieves can't get enough!). I stopped bothering growing tomatoes and cukes in my garden because they grow better and are more productive in these containers. The cukes, in particular, get less disease.
Also, I didn't use the metal trellis that comes with the kit. I made my own, taller, bamboo trellis and grew cukes and tomato plants that were taller than me (I'm 5'7").
I've had my containers for perhaps five or six years and they look like new. I have the green ones -- strong and sturdy and no fading or distress marks.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
My patio planter is overflowing with herbs. This planter grows herbs better than anything else I've tried. Now that I've gone from a small patio to a big yard, it's still the best for my herbs.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have bought several of them for vegetable plants. I chose this one compared to other brands since the length is a little shorter and the width is a little wider (closer to square foot gardening). The plastic is recycling #5 which is what I wanted. I have to open the lid to the water fill tube to tell what the water level is which isn't a problem. The bottom tip of the water fill tube that contains the floater ball would be better if it screwed on instead of snappping on since I had one that was a little loose. I bought the wheels so that I can easily move them around. So far, my vegetable plants are doing great in them. We just had a heavy down pour and they all drained perfectly. Since I haven't had them for very long I can not rate on how they will weather freezing winters or the blazing sun.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
After years of competing with rabbits and deer in my backyard vegetable garden, I moved my garden up to the deck and have had great success with these containers.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is a wonderful product! I am sure I will purchase another in the future. Planted jalapeno peppers in it and they are beautiful!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Product works as advertised. However, the filling mechanism, fell apart when adding water. It is now useless until I empty the planter and start again. A little disappointing, but others have said the same. Planter itself, is worth the money.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Go back to your model from 1997. It has a side hole so that the excess water can drain out yet it still holds about 4-5 inches of water in the reservoir and is very easy to fill. This new one has no over flow hole. I have had to tilt container to drain excess water out. The soil is swolen it is so over wet from rain only. The original watering was a pain in the butt it took over an hour to water to the point on the water meter you insert. The old model you fill the hole in the side when it overflows your done. Check it each day and fill as needed. If you have huge rains it will never over saturate. The plants came from the same starter packet of corn seedlings. my old model the corn is two feet tall. the new the corn is barely 10 inches tall and wimpy. VERY DISSAPPOINTED. I am going to put drain hole in myself and will not buy another one from you as long as this model is in use.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have several of these and loved it until the new version. drowned my plants when it rained.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I planted a variety of herbs in it and keep it on my patio for quick access.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is my third summer using these. The first year was great. Second year, they never dried out, even though I had clipped the columns you're supposed to clip when it's an outdoor planter. I also made sure they weren't clogged. I bought new self-watering mix, cut the columns almost completely off and am ignoring the whole "self-watering" bit. I bought new water fill level gadgets, although I'm not sure why I thought they would help. I've already taken the new mix and plants out, poured out the excess water after a rainfall and started again once this year. Does anyone have any ideas?

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
No matter how green your thumb is, you can just plop a healthy young tomato plant in these planters, and soon you'll have a big thriving plant with great tomatoes. I love them.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I like this product it grows the plants large and healthy. The only other thing I would add is a cover. To keep out the weed and other things flying through the air.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have 4 of these, just bought 2 more. Green is a better color that the puky brown you had. I hope the new filler system works OK, the old one (a hole in the short side) worked just fine. I leave them out all winter, no problems so far (3 winters)I ordered the wheels - these containers are impossible to move when full unless you have wheels.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Got this for my father at his new retirement apartment. It lets him feel like he is still gardening (albeit a small one)! He has two tomato plants and four strawberry plants in it, and it looks like it is going to do just fine.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Each of our granddaughters has one of these planters at our home. They enjoy choosing plants for their own 'garden' and we send them pictures throughout the year of how their gardens are growing. The oldest even decorated hers with sidewalk chalk!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I've had several of these planters for over 5 years. They have held up very well and do not grow mildew like other planters I've had in the past. With the self-watering reservoir you can leave plants for a few days (unless they are in the sun all day) and not worry about watering. These are the best planters I have owned.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have had two of the older version and 8 Earth Boxes all of which have drain holes. I bought two new Self Watering Patio Planters and they do not have drain holes. The tiny, thin vertical black float to indicate the water level is too small to see, and it is worthless. It cannot be seen while filling with water; therefore I usually fill with way too much water. It needs to be redesigned.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought the self watering planter to fit into the Tomato Trolley and it's perfect. I didn't need the Self Starter kit for tomatoes that is suggested for the trolley and found that the self watering planter is the same - just without the kit. I don't actually use the self watering aspect and drilled holes for drainage to take advantage of the extra depth.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I absolutely love the patio planters! I use them to grow herbs (basil gets gigantic!) and flowers. It's so nice to not have to water everyday. I also use your potting soil and get much better results than with a well-known brand.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The patio planters are well conceptualized. I recently used five of them to start a garden club at our school. But I would like to call your attention to several design shortcomings that have frustrated their use.[...] .2. The irrigation spout fits loosely through the black base and into the irrigation chamber. Although surrounding soil helps to stabilize the spout, it can still be bumped twisted and angled during general use. The spout could be better secured by designing a more substantial column within the irrigation chamber to receive the base of the spout.3. The cap at the base of the irrigation spout is a push-on cap rather than a threaded screw-on cap. My students have accidentally dislodged the cap in jostling the irrigation spout, releasing the float ball and the tiny rod into the irrigation chamber below our already installed layer of soil. This required us to empty the soil completely, remove the black irrigation base, and fish out the cap, float ball and tiny rod. If seeds or plants had already been present, our only option would have been to go without the irrigation spout and self-watering feature, or scrap the crop entirely to retrieve the fallen parts.4. There is a drainage cap on the inner surface at the base of the planter that can be removed to allow the planter to function outdoors. Since the cap is internal, and access to it is eventually blocked after installing the black irrigation base, and layers of soil, one must decide from the outset if it should remain or be removed. In using the planters at my school, we had wanted to begin growing the plants indoors and then roll the planters outdoors once the weather warmed. Given the current planter design, we would either have to remove the cap for outdoor use and risk potential leakage from the planters during its stint indoors or leave the cap in place and risk flooding of the planters while they were outdoors. If the cap was located externally on the base, we could have the best of both worlds.

Great if you are limited in garden space. Even a
small backyard can grow vegetable from these
tubs. The height is good for low growing vegetables such as squash and with an added tower,
you can grow peas, tomatoes, etc. They can be moved anywhere with a fitted trolley

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I haven't used this planter yet but have it sitting outside with a block of coir in it. I have noticed that the rain has filled it so that there is an inch of water covering the high parts where normally dirt and plants would be. The terrazo planters let water out when they are full. These need to do the same.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
These self watering planters are great! No need to worry about plants drying out. We used the self watering tomato planter last summer and had great success.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I'm using a couple of these to grow my first winter vegetable garden. I got the book "Incredible Vegetables with Self-Watering Containers" and that inspired me to find these. It's not so easy to find self watering containers that are sturdy enough for veggies.
So far so good! The planter is quite large so I can have several rows of baby spinach and lettuce. It seems pretty sturdy and was easy to assemble. The only problem I've had is that the hinge on the water fill tube is plastic and broke on one of my bins already but it still snaps down fine. Otherwise no problems and the veggies are already sprouting!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
using with soil it's agood size for use throught the winter months for my extra plants I want to keep for next spring.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is the fourth planter I've purchased. My deck garden is oomplete. The planters are great for growing lettuce, tomatoes, peppers - all my favorites. And they don't dry up while on vacation.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I am doing an indoor winter garden and they are perfect for my dining room (hardly used) windows. I am growing salad greens and onions. The only con so far is the water level indicators. My granddaughter pulled one out and I can't reinsert it now since there are plants in the box. Could the indicators and water spouts be somehow integrated into the boxes?
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I had purchsed two to try and liked it so much that I purchased two more for next year. My daughter wants some as a Christmas present. We like the fact that it holds so much water and we don't have to check it daily. Great product.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The first one I ordered is holding herbs that are thriving! I love the convenience of not having to worry about watering. I think this will also be great for vegetables that don't have deep roots, so I just ordered 7 more and I'm going to try lettuce and spinach in them. I'm also going to give them a try inside in my south-facing windows once it gets colder outside.

I bought this item before its redesign and thought it was great. The redesign water tube makes this the best ever. I had lettuce in July in 115 degree heat with these planters. It makes my garden truly year round here in the desert!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I already own six of these containers but had to have two more to expand my patio garden. They are great for growing just about anything (raspberries, tomatoes, peppers, beets, canteloupe, etc,). I am now ready for a large fall season of gardening.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We just moved to the coast of North Carolina, where it's usually hot and dry. This planter was the only way I could grow veggies without having to water everyday. I bought one as a test, and just ordered 3 more. The yield is twice as good as the raised bed I built. If I travel for a week, the plants stay moist.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have eggplants growing in one tub now, doing very well. I also have a funnel into the water tube arrangement. This item replaces the old style which had a water outlet cut into side AND no provision for too much water. Living in the drought produced no problems with the old design, but this year proved hazardous to tomatoes because of too much water. Two large plants just died of root rot. no way to drain. This new design solves that problem and needs a studier tube and wider mouth for a watering can.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I liked them for an early crop of lettuce, beans,
and zucchini. I also keep a supply of lettuce well
into the fall on my back deck. I now own four
planters.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Bought 2 of these 3 summers ago to use at a weekend vacation cottage because I wasn't there during the week to water, & they're on a covered porch. They're great since they hold 4 gallons of water. Plants don't dry out & wilt between waterings. When full with potting soil, plants & 4 gallons of water they're quite heavy. May want to consider the plant stand with wheels if you have to move them repeatedly or very far. One comment said the water level indicators stick in the low level position. Mine do to, but I just pull them loose & after adding the water they float upwards again. Love them - need to buy more for my home!! I've converted to more container gardening, & both my porches at home are covered, so I'm always watering there. A friend had bought Gardner's Supplies self-watering window boxes & loved them which is how I was referred to this company.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The first 5 planters I bought grew beautiful thick lettuce 6 months out of the year in mid-central Florida despite the heat. The water seems to have kept the roots cool. Encouraged, I bought 4 more of the newer model. But in a year of 2 weeks of ultra-heavy rains, the newer model drowned everything. You will love these if you have no problems with rain.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Great for growing tomatoes. The older version with the side opening for filling the reservoir is much easier and faster than the so called improved top port with indicator. I wouldn't want to order another container with the top port fill. I'll try to cut a side hole in the one I have and not use the top fill.I have six of the older type which I much prefer.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I planted a late 'crop' of green beans and cucumbers with lots of speculation whether they would come up this year. It has been a very wet spring and summer here in CT. But it was up like
a miracle in a week!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought this planter thinking I would keep my plants watered. The planter has one drawback- it has no drain hole. When you have extremely wet conditions like we did this spring, there is no where for the water to go. The planter needs a removable drain hole with a plug to let out the water when it gets too wet.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I use these boxes on the deck to grow vegetables - they're large enough that I can grow anything in them, and they look really nice at the same time!
No weeds... no watering... fresh veggies... I really like these boxes!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This year after the lettuce and spinach I grew in my container last year, I decided to experiment and tried green beans. Yesterday I had my first harvest. This is momentous as every year the deer and rabbits eat the first planting in my garden in the yard and I'm getting old and sick of it. So I think I'm going to get a few more of these and experiment on the patio. I put them on and upside down plastic crate and I can sit in my wicker chair and garden. Going to try some perennials now and see if they winter over in this in the garage.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The planter puts all my herbs within close reach of my kitchen. I have some out front in my garden but was always too lazy to go out in the garden with a flashlight to snip them. This box has allowed me to have all my herbs handy and my cooking is filled with fresh herbs, mesclun, basil and all the good things that are needed for summer dinners. Since I am sometimes away for a week or so, the self watering feature means that I won't come home to find a bunch of limp, bedraggled looking plants. Wish I had these sooner!

I loved the old style of patio planter that you filled thru a hole in the bottom. I bought two of the newer style and hate them. The water level indicators stick every time you fill them and they are almost impossible to unstick. I would love to buy two more but hate these new containers.

I purchased the container, the support cage, the soil, and fertilizer. I placed the containers on my front porch, planted tomatoes. They are huge! The biggest in the area! Townhouse with 1 yard gravel out from wall. Set containers on this and grow flowers and veggies. HOA requires annuals in pots. Reservoir and gauge have worked well for first month.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I've had the planter for three seasons now. When I first received them I was so excited that I didn't read the instructions fully and failed to open the drainage holes in the planters. When we had a heavy rain, I had to tip the planters to drain the excess water. The next season I opened the drainage holes and no more overflow problems. My only complaint is that because the planters aren't very deep, it is difficult to find plant supports for tomatoes. I've cut some bamboo supports to fit and they're working ok so far. I've had success with tomatoes, peppers, herbs and eggplant.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I do container veggie gardening on my deck, and love the self-watering containers. I have some that are several years old, and when washed after a season and stored in garage, they continue to work great. I like that the new ones have the wicking, which the old ones do not. The Patio planter is deeper than the original tomato planter, allowing for good, deep roots to develop. And they are easy to move, even full of dirt. Only downside was the tremendous amount of rain and no drainage.. I lost some lettuce to flooding!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I purchased one of these several years ago, and keep it under an overhang where it receives little rain; I've been quite happy with this one. This year, I purchased two more tubs and put them out in the open. We've had an unusual amount of rain in NJ this spring, and I've had problems with flooding in these tubs since there are no drainage holes. Only a small amount of the standing water could be poured off of the top before I started to lose soil along with it, and pouring water out of the fill tube didn't get enough water out either (besides, the tubs are heavy when soaking wet, and a strain to hold up). Even though I spent lots of time repeatedly sucking water out of the fill tubes using a turkey baster (which was very slow going), the soil was still so wet over a period of weeks that all of the dahlia tubers planted in the tubs rotted and died. I have a number of the square tubs of this design, which have a hole in the side through which you fill them. Excess water from all the rain has been able to drain out of those side holes, and I haven't lost a single plant from those self-watering tubs. They don't have a rotting smell about them, either.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I like the green color, and the large size/capacity. Self-watering is less work and conserves water in this area, where water is costly and needs to be used wisely.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I really love this product. It looks great on my deck and I can;t believe how well the plants are growing.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
These planters are SUCH high quality--better than I ever expected. I am doing vegetable container gardening for the first time, and our crop is amazing! I also got the casters for these and they really make moving them so easy--get them! I cannot recommend these more highly--oh and make sure to drill the holes for water overflow!!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
All plastic items like this should be made of recycled materials.
I'm concerned that there was no obvious wicking material included in the unit I received.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We planted our container vegetables in these planters and they're VERY happy and healthy. We've only had to water a couple of times since Mother Nature usually fills the reservoir before it gets dry.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I hardly have any sun in my yard, but the planters are perfect for my patio, which has lots of sun. I bought a planter last year for my 2 cherry tomato plants, and I loved how easy it was to grow them, that I bought 2 more planters this year for other veggies. The self water feature is an added bonus!

I live in a wooded area with sunlight at a premium. This product is working wonderful. With the casters added, I can move it around my deck and eventhough it has been a very rainy spring, my tomato plants are growing! I also used your recommended potting soil and fertilizer. The self-watering feature was my main reason for the purchase, and it is functioning as advertised.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Love the size, I put it up on 2 cement blocks on a dolly and it is perfect for handicapped gardener or wheelchair gardening and easy to move. Unfortunately accidental weedwacker hit ruined one before I could put up on blocks :-{ Tends to get brittle after a few Florida summers.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The planter is bigger than I imagined, so didn't order the casters. I think they are a must, with the soil required and to move about.
I have recommended it to a friend who has limited space but wanted to plant tomatoes.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
In many reviews, I've noticed that people complain about the self watering patio planters and Tomato Success Kits not having drainage when used outside. They end up with dirt soup! Well, according to the instructions I received, it says to remove the Reservoir Platform, locate two tall,1/2"diameter columns on the floor of the planter, and using plyers, pull off tips of the columns. No more drowning plants after the rain and no more dirt soup! We have had pouring rain for days this spring and my tomatoes and peppers look GREAT!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought one and now have tomatoes 6 feet high (honest). I ordered two more for squash and green pepper plants. I love that you can fill the reservoir and go off for the weekend and plants are still happy. Best "deck garden" I've ever had. I will order three more for next year and they will contain my whole garden.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I purchase 2 of these 6 year ago when I lived in a condo and loved them. I was having difficulty finding a good location in my yard of our new house for a garden and finally decided to use self watering planters for the whole gardern. They work wonderfully for everything (tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, spinch, onions, green beans. The newer ones hold water better but are a little more difficult to fill due to the top loading verses the old side loading though. I had a garage sale and the planters were a big hit with people. I was handing out your website to dozens of people.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is our first experience with these planters, and so far, all is well. My plants are still young but appear to be thriving. The water reservoir holds a generous supply and we'll be anxious to see how the season progresses. They are very sturdy - no problem containing the amount of soil and water within them.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
In generaly, I liked the overall design, but found that, during a torrential downpour, it did not drain well at all (even after removing the end caps as instructed). Speaking of the end caps, they were not easy to remove as indicated. Bottom line--too expensive for what you get.

i have used this product for 6 years. it is a great way to have earlier produce, peppers, tomatoes, excellent for herbs that you can bring in for the winter. i use them for all of these things. i would use them for more but i don't have any more boxes to fill. great product. i have found no negative qualities except i don't have more of them.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We had the dirt in the pot and the tomatoes planted and had an unexpected 4 inches of rain. Did not realize there was no over flow holes so we had to put our own in. Uncertain at this time if they are in the correct spot but hopeful.

My lettuce seeds are growing like gangbusters, and I only water about once a week. The planters are quite attractive and very sturdy. I'm going to buy more next season.

I have planted a mini garden in this pot and it works great! added casters so I can move it to more or less sun.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
These planters are perfect for my rooftop space. We don't have access to water up there so the self-watering feature is really convenient. The only minus is that I think they could be a little deeper. Overall though I'm really happy with them!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I've had an older one for several years for herb plants & had great success. so I thought I'd try seeds this year.I bought two more to plant vegetable seeds (swiss chard, peppers & scallions). I planted them less than 4 weeks ago & they're coming up fast. These planters hold so much water that I've only refilled once, but it depends on temperature & rain. It the heat of summer I fill it about once a week. My only problem is the top fill port. Some leaves were in my watering can & went down the port rendering the water level indicator inoperative on one of the planters. I didn't repeat my mistake on the other.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought two of these to use on the balcony of my 7th-floor apartment. The plants are thriving and I only have to fill the water reservoir about once every four days, although we haven't had any really hot weather yet. I will buy more of them next year.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Last year I grew tomatoes, lots of good ripe tomatoes, in a Gardeners Supply Tomato Success Kit. This isn't easy at high altitude in the Rocky Mountains. This year I am growing squash, beans, lettuce, spinach and flowers in their self-watering containers. This product is fantastic.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is the first season that I have tried these planters, and so far everything is working out fine. The planters were easy to assembly and the water level is simple to check. The planters are big enough to hold two empty walls 'o water to keep my plants warm in the northern climate where I garden. I planted lettuce seeds and started harvesting lettuce five weeks later. Hopefully, my other crops will do as well. Besides lettuce I am trying tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
READ INSTRUCTIONS FIRST. We bought 12 planters and failed to read instructions before we had 4 of them planted, so we failed to break off the tops of the overflow towers in the bottom or pack the potting soil into the grooves of the false bottom as instructed. However, the soil still seems to be wicking water just fine and we have had no problems. I would not recommend putting in any transplants with soil over 5 inches high, as that is about all the room you will have with the perforated bottom installed. We did start some tomato plants and vining plants as well as flowers, and all are doing well, and will go over a week without re-filling the reservoir, no problem. They are attractive and we love them, but Read the Instructions before assembling.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The containers are bigger than they look. They are able to hold and grow multiple plants with good space between. The self watering soil is very good and my vegatables are growing like wildfire!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
These Self Watering Patio Planters are perfect for our deck. We used one for our tomatoes (they are growing wonderfully) and one for a small herb garden. We love the fact that they have a self watering reserve so that we don't have to worry about our plants drying out in the hot Maryland sun.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Purchased the patio planter w/the 31"-high Newbury frame to keep cooking herbs elevated. Using it outdoors, so an overflow drain for heavy periods of rain would have been nice. I had to drill a hole for overflow. Still like the look & the design, though.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The new design with the watering access on top does not allow drainage after a rain storm like old design with side slot. Your placement must be under a roof or covered area.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Excellent for leafy greens
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought these to use at a vacation home for herbs. They are growing great and so far no dryouts! We are only there about every other week so this is the prefect product...I may try more soon!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Actually this is three reviews in one. I use the
self-watering patio planter with the tomato success trolley and the self-watering container mix. I have had great success with this combination. Saves my back and the crop is so
easy to harvest. I have five combinations now
and hope to add a couple more next year. I have
beets, green beans, spinch and lettuce now up.
Tomatoes are still in the house, also sweet peppers. Can't say enough good things!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This planting system is meeting my test for a planting system that would have a large water reservoir and fit attractively in an urban landscape. These planters fit my needs for growing seasonal vegetables and herbs--and can be moved indoors for winter growing of more limited crops. This type of system avoids all soil contaminants that are sometimes found in urban and suburban soil.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I ordered three of these and tried one with a determinate tomato plant, one with an indeterminate, and one with flowers. The 4-gallon well at the bottom is more than sufficient to keep all of these plants watered. During heavy rains, it is necessary to empty out the extra water, as these fill with rain water to the top with no way to drain the excess. The planter is great with flowers and with the determinate tomato. It is a little small for the indeterminate plant, but I knew that was probably the case when I planted it! All in all, this is a great product that does exactly what is advertises it will do!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Before I found this product I felt my yard had no good space for a vegetable garden. When I discovered these, I realized that I could use my sunny, graveled, unused dog run to grow all the container veggies my beginning gardener's enthusiasm could handle. I bought five containers, and have used them for several years now to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, radishes, basil, chives, oregano, and edible flowers such as nasturtiums. I've even grown dwarf sunflowers. The reservoirs hold enough water to keep notoriously thirsty plants- such as tomatoes- happy for several days. The soil stays evenly moist- not getting boggy- which makes these great for starting seeds. I'm a big fan!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We've used old model successfully for years growing tomatoes and cucumbers on driveway. It only needs watering about 1/week. The old model filled from side, and allowed overfilling from drip line. The new model is top fill, and I had to add two drain holes to work with my drip line. Now it works great!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This product is so wonderful that I now own 8 of them! I start seeds inside them in the early Spring and I roll them out for sun during the warm days and back indoors at night. I am now eating radishes and spinach from them and the season in NJ has not passed the last frost date yet! I have carrots, herbs, eggplant, beets, onions and lettuce growing on my deck. I cannot say enough good things about these
planters.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
In our usual summer heat and drought in TN, this product was great for giving salad greens consistent moisture, protection from predators with a cage my husband built to cover the top, and protection from too much sun with row cover on top of the cage. This spring we're inundated with rain, so that even with the drainage holes opened as you instruct, the planters fill up with too much water. I agree with Susan the Gardener that drainage from the reservoir that can be open or plugged is the solution. It appears the "flip and fill" fits a planter that does fill and drain below the soil level, but I thought I'd share my short-term solution for the old drainage-challenged design. I threaded a thin spray bottle tube down through the feed tube next to the float, stuck it into 3/16 inch OD plastic tubing available at the hardware store, and syphoned out the excess water.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I love these containers. They hold a lot and having that large reservoir don't require much watering. I have 2 of them now for salad greens to grow on my deck.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This planter is great but the set-up instructions should have been located IN the planter where they could be easily found. Instead they were tucked inside an envelope with promotional material and I found them too late!! It was very disappointing!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have arugula & carrots about to harvest from these planters right now!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I planted my first vegetable garden on my deck, using both seeds and seedlings. Everything is thriving!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I own six patio planters. I've had two for more than five years and they look good as new.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Love this container for growing vegetables, herbs, and, especially, tomatoes (purchase tomato starter kit which includes soil, cage, tomato food). Withstands Phoenix summer heat.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have 8 and may add more if I can find the space.
I grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers on my small patio. Regular pots would dry out in less than a day in our climate.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We used this container to grow tomatoes and other vegetables. It's great. We even bought one for my parents to try.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I am testing container vegetable gardening this year and this is one of the best products for that purpose on the market. It allows one to grow anything regardless of the local soil conditions (in Austin that is limestone caleche). The water reservoir means you can leave for a weekend and the plants will be fine. Organic fertilizers can be mixed with water and added to the reservoir allowing for slow release to the plants. What a great product.
The problem is the lack of an over flow opening. It is possible to over fill the reservoir and turn the soil unto soup and drown the plants. Rain can also overfill the container. Even with 90+ degree days, it can take 3-4 days for the container to dry out enough to stop plant trauma (yellow leaves and dying off of lower vegetable leaf brackets in this instance).
An over flow opening would make this a perfect product. I would recommend that the opening exist above the reservoir with a pipe connection if these feasible engineering.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Of all the self-watering I have tested, this is the best. CAVIATE - I cut the middle parts half inch down/more to give more drainage over flow.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
the planters are working great so far. I am a single airline pilot and go on 5 day trips so they have to be self sufficent when I am gone. So far they are working out great.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Loved my 5 older planters (with drain holes) so much that I bought 4 more. Will have to drill drain holes in these, as my plants are drowning in the rain. Suggest the sales dept. catch on the number of complaints about this serious problem. Need fitted hole covers, too, as a snake is drinking from one, and I had to duct tape it.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I can have my vegetable garden on my deck and keep deer from eating everything.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Biggest problem is that they have no overflow valve, so for outdoor use and to avoid flooding plants during heavy rains, you have to cut off the tops of some of the supports so it will drain. A much better design would allow for either indoor or outdoor use with removeable/replaceable plastic plugs on the sides (but not at the bottom, so it could still hold water during dry spells). A simple idea like this would allow them to be removed for outdoor use of the planters and replaced when the planters are used indoors. This comment holds true for most self-watering planters.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I am using this product to expirement with radishes and lettice in an un-attended polley house. Usually this is difficult to maintain proper moisture. I was able to start in March and the unit is working great. I just need more of them...
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I use these for growing vegetables on my patio. I really like the self-watering pots because normally it means I don't over-water, and it works when I have to go out of town. However, I like the old style pots better, with the hole in the side for inserting the hose. I can feel how much water is left. This time, I had two of each style. The floats in the new pots didn't appear to be accurate, and I got too much water in and almost drowned my new plants. I had to dig out "mud" and replace it with new soil. I have no way to check the water level now that I can trust, since I don't want to put too much water in again. My two "old" planters are just fine, and I know exactly how much water is left in those.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
In our Texas weather it's nice to have something that doesn't dry out instantly. I'm going to order the self-watering inserts for other pots.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I use this large size to grow tomato plants. It is nice to fill the reservoir and not worry about watering for several days. I made sure to punch out the drain holes, and have not had a problem with overwatering during rains.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is the best for growing tomatoes. The watering system from the bottom helps to pull the roots deep for better growth. It is easy to refill.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I am using these to start seeds and grow herbs

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Each year we grow heirloom tomatoes and try different techniques. We have a total yard irrigation system but this self-watering planter was better. The continuous presence of water must be the key to our success. The device was very easy to set up and simple to take down and store after the season. We ordered a second one for this year and helped our gardening neighbors place their order.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The new planters offered lack soil channels. They don't wick moisture to roots because the water can't reach the roots. The older pots with the hole in the front was in every superior.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I like the older design better, simple and functional. You can check with your finger to see if the pot needs watering. The newer design doesn't work as well. Plus squirrels or someone is stealing the dip stick out the watering hole. Even putting in drain holes on the side does not quite do it. I over water with the flimpsy gadget on the new models. I may have to cut out my own drainage hole but why pay for something that doesn't work first time? Please go back to the old design so I can buy more planters. Right now I'm buying not any more.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Planted tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers in my pots. It was great not having to water daily, until the rain came. The planters became pools with every rain, I tried siphoning the water out. My plants did not due well. I sent a request for advice from Gardeners and did not receive a reply. I am very disappointed.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have had several of the older model with the drainage hole for several years and they are 5 stars great. The newer model is tricky to put together and the plants are drowned in heavy rain. I drilled drain holes but they are still not as good as the older models. My favorites are the 19 inch square planters with the drain hole. Please have the older models made for us again.

I use these containers for my granddaughters ages 3 and 5. They love to choose the plants they want and the containers are just the right size for children to work on. Tomatoes, summer annuals, and pansies are favorites.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This product lacks drainage hole/s!! I have 3 older models of this product, which have a side hole for water filling, which also functions to siphon excess water out of the planter. The older models work fine, but this new model, with a top water filler turned into a miniature swamp in no time....essentially, it enabled me to torment several tomato seedlings this past season. I may attempt another season, but only after drilling some drainage holes in the darn thing. Please go back to the old model...this one is pathetic, as well as being a ridiculous waste of money, time resorces and tender tomato seedlings!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This product lacks an overflow hole so there was no place for excess water to go when it rained and the reservoir was already quite full. We had to tip it way to the side multiple times to get some of the water out, which made the satured soil shift around and move the plants. It was a MAJOR design flaw for us, particularly since the product is rather pricey. Once this growing season is over we're going to drill our own overflow holes after we empty the dirt out. Otherwise, it's an attractive containter, well sized, and the refill tube worked well. Please redesign with an overlow hole!

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This product is solid EXCEPT for a major design flaw--there is no way for excess water to drain out of the self-watering container. If there is a lot of rain at once and the well is already fairly full, the water will quickly saturate the soil and drown the plants. We had to tip it over many times throughout the spring only to have all the saturated dirt move and displace the plants. We are going to drill some holes ourselves at the end of the growing season but the product is so expensive that it seems the manufacturers should have desinged an overflow hole into the product. This has been a major drawback for us. Otherwise, the color, refill tube, etc. have all worked well for us.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I am using it to grow some of my vegetables, since it worked really well before on tomatoes, with the tomato kit. Now my eggplant is doing great, i just hope i have enough sunny days for it to give me some fruits. It is big enough to fit several medium sized plants...
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I originally purchased 3 to use in my greenhouse last year. They worked so well keeping my tomatoes watered I purchased 2 more recently. I'm no longer a slave to my watering can.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
A bit pricey, but very satisfactory. Everything grows beautifully in them.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought this for a Christmas gift for my mother in law. My mom has several and loves them. I thought it would make a great gift!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
During heavy rains.....which we had many this year it was hard to drain extra water off without losing dirt and plants. Older version was easy to drain off the side hole. Not as happy as I have been with other items
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Everything I planted has done very well. I have it on our deck so it does have to be moved to shelter during a pouring rainstorm as there are no drainage holes.
You did not give me a choice to review the hanging tomato planter. Those so-called capillary strips DID NOT WORK for me, no matter what I tried. If I remove the plastic "bowl" and pour water directly onto the soil, then it works.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I've purchased several of these. I use one to grow raspberries in. I move frequently and I wanted my raspberries to go with me! My father loves how well tomatoes and herbs grow. He was skeptical last year, but asked for more this year!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Great planter. Even though its an improvement, I prefer the previous model. Make sure you read the instructions(online) before using
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I use the planters to grow eggplant and peppers. The plants get HUGE and are much more productive than the ones in my raised beds. The 4 gallon reservoir is big enough for our climate (it never rains here in the summer).
I wish they had an overflow drain that is unpluggable from the outside so I could grow winter vegetables when it rains but close it back up in the summer to conserve as much water as possible.
I plan to drill one or two drainage holes I can plug with a cork in one of them this fall .

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Plants have thrived, even a small tree that was too little to be set in the yard. I haven't had to water it at all, the reservoir is fabulous. The size is perfect.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought 2 containers, one holds 2 supported tomato plants, the other 4 pepper plants and 1 supported grape tomato. All are thriving, we are eating the grape tomatoes, the other plants are full of green fruit and the peppers are healthy and have produced red peppers already. I have been adding nearly 3 gallons of water every other day to the reservoir now and am surprised at the water use.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
While this is great for the patio, (less water spillage), I use both the new type and the original in the garden for tomatoes. The new type is much more ruuged with its rolled rim but the filling proceedure with top fill port is the pits when two tomatoes in a planter will use 2-3 gallons a day. The top fill would be handy if the planter was at grouhd level. I have a 450
square foot garden of raised beds and containers
which are on benches that are 2 and 3 concrete
blocks high so the original type planter works just well for me.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I love this container. The ease of watering my tomatoes is wonderful. I have the healthy plants I have ever had.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I Used these to replace regular planter that had to be watered every day, sometimes twice a day in really hot weather. I can now enjoy more & work less
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We live in the woods with LOTS of wildlife, so it's hard to maintain a garden for humans instead of rabbits, deer, etc. With these containers, we're able to grow our veggies up on our deck safe from wildlife. Best of all, they NEVER dry out because of the self-watering system. Couldn't grow our own produce without them.

Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
My biggest disappointment was that the container became waterlogged and killed my melon starts - which I grew from seed and which are not available locally. After I had set it up, which was easy, I planted, put on a plastic mulch, and set back to enjoy a bountiful harvest. Which is not to be. My plain black nursery tubs are out performing the planter handily.
The problem arose when we received heavy May rains, and the planters quickly filled up with water since I had already filled the resevoir. Once waterlogged there was no easy way to drain off the excess water short of completely emptying the planter and killing my plants - which eventually died anyway from waterlogged roots. So, I definitely could not recommend these planters to anyone in a rainy climate like the Northwest. They would be fine under cover probably but definitely not where I use them - in my driveway which gets extra heat and serves as my container melon patch. It is probably fine in a dry climate but does not work that well here in the Great Northwet.
I did end up buying 1 "Earthbox", the new redesigned model, which is outperforming the Gardener's Supply box handily.
The lack of an overflow drainage hole is definitely a problem for gardeners in rainy climates. Also It could stand to be 4 to 6 inches deeper for deeper rooted plants such as melons. It would also be nice to see a larger model at about same front to back dimensions but double the width.
All in all I am actually quite disappointed as I expected it to perform much better from the build up. It is the first product I've purchased from Gardener's Supply which I found disappointing. I do have 3 Grow Beds and love them, and will buy more.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I use these 2 grow egetables on my deck - I grow tomotoes, this year I bought another container and grw zucchini - everything does well in them
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Wow is all I can say.Plants grow quickly due to constant water & feed levels. Great for herbs & vegetables. I bought one for my 92 year old father & he loves it. His tomato plant grew 10 inches in one week! Much better value thank a competitor. Very heavy to move once planted so consider placement carefully or buy the casters.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I purchased 2 of these plus the one for tomatoes. I planted vegetables in them. We have deer and where I placed them on my patio I do not have to worry about the deer. Having a in ground garden has become to cumbersome for me. I especially like the watering feature and being able to move them (with the casters). I plan to purchase 2 more next spring.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is the easiest way to grow vegetables that I have found. I had some problems with seeds--plants that have been started work best. The watering can be an issue if you plan to leave for more than a few days. But, it more than makes up for these problems by having a secure environment to grow in, safe from weeds and critters.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is the second planter that I've purchased and it's great for growing tomatoes. One drawback is having to empty it at the end of the season for storage in cold weather.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I bought the product to grow herbs on my patio. The herbs are growing like gang-busters and I have never had a day that the soil was dry. The reservoir design is ingenious.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
These containers are great! I live in the city and do not have a yard so they allowed me to grow vegetables in a nearby parking lot. California is currently under drought restrictions but the self-watering style is very water-efficient and allows me to maximize resources and conserve every drop. I am so stoked about my summer harvest, I'm adding more containers to whatever space I can get a hold of.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I have used these in my greenhouse for two seasons. I have grown melons, peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes in the summer. I will soon be picking cherry tomatoes over my head. In the spring and fall I grow spinach, lettuce, and chard.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We have always had issues with our garden soil despite adding everything to it we could think of. I love to grow my own vegetables. I tried two of these planters on my deck and was so impressed with the results that I bought four more for this year. We grow enough tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and okra for us and some of our neighbors to enjoy. The great thing this year is that with our house on the market, I don't have to worry about leaving my vegtables behind. If the house sells, I'll just take my portable garden with me!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I'm growing my first ever vegetable garden in these containers this year. It could not be easier. So far, so good! It has been a great introduction to gardening.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
My planter sits on my back porch which allows me easy access to my salad greens when preparing meals. The added casters allow me to move the planter in and out of the sun so my lettuce did not bolt this year! The growth is luxurious and friends are amazed at our garden on the back porch - a decorative accent.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Love them. For someone who was brought up with ground gardening this concept is fantastic. No weeding and the condition of the soil is what you put into the containers.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I like this item. It works great on my patio. I just put flowers in it. I do recommend the wheels this item is very heavy once the soil is added. It does keep my flowers looking great and with the water reservoir that is one less container that I have to worry about.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I love the sturdy construction, large size and water capacity, but do not care for the new watering port. It is difficult to add a large amount of water quickly. The lids do not stay closed in southeast Texas heat and the tubes pop out of the holders. I prefer the old design and would be pleased if you were to return to the old design.

This is the second time I've purchased self-watering planters; the first one is still in use and holding up very well after several years. These are great for herb and other plant collections and can be moved indoors to overwinter tender varieties, even when the plants become larger. The water reservoir ensures enough moisture in dry indoors and hot outdoors environments, and the guage is nice to monitor how much water is being added when watering, but I miss the opening on the side for drainage and ended up restoring it on the new planters rather than choosing the bottom drainage option. The color selection could use more neutral colors (like the former gray tone), but the usefulness of this product lead me to purchase more even in the less preferred shades. The basic design is a winner!

A great way to grow lots of tomatoes!
However, it is expensive and it would be really nice if there was a longer tube for adding water.

We have one for herbs, one for peppers & one for tomatoes. Saves watering time & our plants thrive.

I use this product to grow greens on my balcony. I have never grown an edible plant in my life, but this container is now overflowing with good things. It was easy and quick to get up and running. It looked like a bit of work to put in drainage holes, but it's easy for me to pull the container away from the edge of the balcony to avoid the rain when necessary.

Forget the tomatoes, this is planter holds a TON of anything! Plenty of room to mix all sorts of flowers and greenery for truly deliteful displays. For its' size and price this is the absolute best self watering buy you can make.
The older I get the more I seem to need help with my yard. Self watering containers have been THE number one solution for me. I now have 6 of these planters arranged along my patios, front and back, all crammed with my favorties, even the water hogs.

I asked for, and received, for Mother's Day two self-watering 31 inch windowbox planters. I was so impressed by them that I gave a girlfriend a self-watering planter for her birthday in May.
We both LOVE THEM. I have only had to add water twice to my planters. The flowers are thriving, I'm saving water and my time (that was spent watering plants everyday in the summer).
I rave about them to everyone.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
I use these for peppers and tomatoes, and the plants in these are way ahead of any others we're growing. The water level indicators, however, simply don't work; the floats are always at exactly the same level. I just fill the reservoir every few days.

I'm using it to plant a herb garden and some greens (on my deck) which I love to eat during summertime. The fact the product holds 4qt of whater means I don't have to water this frequently -- a major plus since I don't have the time to water my garden everyday. Garden looks great! I can see how flowers and plants would flourish in this system as well althought I am not using for this purpose.

Living in a patio home with a postage stamp sized yard, I despaired of growing container tomatoes because of the constant watering needed. I have now picked my first tomatoes and only have to water a couple of times a week, or even less if it rains! I add fertilizer into the reservoir & they have grown bountifully! Also great for herbs, and maybe I'll try flowers in them next year. Thanks! KY gal

I grow all my vegitables in containers. These are perfect for my deck, bought one and than purchased 3 more. Will by more for next years crop.

I've been growing organic tomatoes for many years and usually resign myself to some sort of blight. This year we moved and the only sunny space was on the patio so I decided to try this planter. All four plants are large and happy and so far promising a larger yield than I ever saw from twice as many garden-plot plants. I plan to purchase more planters next year and expand the vegetable selection.

even the zucchini and cucumbers are happy in this bed.....only problem is the spout for watering and the device for measuring quickly became non-functional, and i tend to overwater.....fix that problem and they're ingenious!!!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The only problem I have with the planters is that the fill-tube plastic does not hold up to AZ sun, but I put styrofoam cups over them to shield them.
This is the first season that I was able to get excellent production of tomatoes in this climate. I also grew greens in them over the winter
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
be sure to purchase the cages with it if you plan on needing them as I understand they are not available separately; fill water reservoir often for it is amazing how fast plants take the water in--probably the best product of its kind
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This product has a "knock out" water level control opening in the bottom, but it does not work well. The old style planter, with the opening in the side, through which water would flow when it got too deep worked much *much* better.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
My tomato plants were 4x larger than my friend's who were planted at the same time in her garden. If you've had problems with vegetables planted in containers not getting enough water, these are for you. They only need to be checked every few days. It was easy to add granule fertizer in the watering hole. It takes about 1 minute to get them ready for planting.

Wish the water resevoir held more water. But very east to use and grows great veggies.

The self watering compartment is all that is advertised. With normal rainfall I have only watered twice is the 6 weeks since I planted.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Great for all vegetables and flowers. I have six on the deck now with tomatoes, green beans, salad greens, radishes and flowers in them. Watering from the bottom saves water and time.
I do prefer the older ones that fill through a hole in the side to the top filler.
I move them inside in the winter, fill with pots of orchids, etc. and water carefully from the top.

My Father-in-Law was so impressed with the self watering system, We purchased the Tomato Success Kit for a Father's Day gift. He raves about it! However, one of his flfill tube floats broke also.

With our new self watering containers we now have a flourishing kitchen garden right on our deck. Just one planter holds a tomato plant, with several herbs and a couple of marigolds to fend off mosquitoes.
Best herb garden we've ever had!

This is the best!! I have purchased another brand of self watering planter in the past and was satisfied but this one from Gardener's Supply is even better, more durable and easily mobile (the other one, the wheels did not work as well as this one!!). Also, water indicator is extremely helpful. I have already purchased 6 and a few more as gifts.

This self-watering container system makes gardening a snap and helps make the most of the space that you have in your back yard. I recommend using the Incredible Vegetables book by Ed Smith to get your own garden started with them.

Growing six flowering tobacco plants that a friend started for me. Mine are far and away ahead of hers planted in the ground.

I use these planters to grow vegetables. Right now, I have leaf lettuce, spinach, and potatoes. Soon I'll add the tomato trellis and transplant my tomatoes.
Salad greens are especially easy and good, and every two days I save a bag of lettuce from being shipped from some remote spot.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
We have always grown tomatoes in the ground with minimal success. Our sister-in-law recommended the self-watering planter as she had success with it. We purchased three boxes, and six tomato plants in anticipation of losing a couple. Not so! We have six robust tomato bushes that are growing tomatoes like crazy. My garden is now weed-free since the water is contained. I love these planter boxes!
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
This is the first season I have used it so we will see how my plants do. I have some pepper and basil plants in one and plan on doing lettuce and greens in the other. The only complaint is they are heavy once filled with soil and water, but they do warn you about that in the instructions.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
Any plant will love these pots. Plants look great after weeks in the hot sun without watering them. They are a good size and you can put lots of plants in each. I would recommend them to everyone. These are the best planters I have bought. I tried the ones at [...] but they do not compare.
Comments about Self-Watering Patio Planters:
The product will be great if drainage could be added, probably side-drainage. We have been receiving a lot of rain and with no draining, the container has been useless this season.
