Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I assembled this gadget per the intstructions but would have liked an explanation of how the water is drawn up into the pot. It still isnt totally clear to me, but I have the self watering pot located in a very hot place on my deck and it has yet to show that the water level in the reservoir is going down. I still have to water the plants from the top because they dry out, so I am not so sure this thing is working out very well.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Perhaps I did not assemble this correctly, but it does not work like the self-watering window boxes. The device that is supposed to indicate the need for water never goes down & yet the soil dried out. I love my self-watering window boxes, but would not purchase this conversion kit again.

Great product. My plants now survive the heat and long weekends when we are away. The only problem is the lid will not stay shut on the tube. I place a small rock on it. The plants hide the tube and the rock. I will purchase more.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

My porch recieves full sun and my plants were always stressed and too dry. I'd water every day and sometimes 2x and still couldn't keep up. I put the larger one in and viola! Problem solved. My flowers look the best they've ever looked - and I only have to refill about every other day. I love them!

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

They did not fit in the container that I wanted. Afraid the smaller size would not hold enough water to benefit much. However I was able to put them in other containers. We have had lots of rain so haven't been able to really test them yet. Would be nice to have a product that is smaller in diameter but deeper so that it would hold more water. If it works, will order more for next year.

Not a good option
By MLVerified Purchaser from Virginia on 5/28/2011
Pros:
Lightweight
Cons:
Difficult To Assemble
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Whether these work for your really depends on the shape of your containers. They didn't work for me. The water container was too small and too far away from the soil. The tops on the tubes keep popping open, permitting evaporation.

I bought these because I already had containers I liked. The self-watering idea is great, but probably works better when the containers are designed for it.

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I purchased 5 of the large size for 5 large outdoor containers. The topsoil always looks dry between rains, and, the floats all indicate the water reservoirs are still full. I have not seen even one of the floats get lower in the tube, even though we may go for a week or more without rain, and, when it does rain most of the time it is only a shower, not a soaker. I find myself having to water as though the self waterers were not in the pots. I asked Gardner Supply personnel about the size to be used in my containers and I did everything as instructed, but, THEY JUST DO NOT WORK. THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN, WHICH IS NOT APPRECIATED.

I have the gallon size and also the quart size. I would also buy a 2 quart size if that was offered. My garden is all in containers on my balcony. I face northeast, so I grow mostly flowers and foliage that like about 6 hrs of morning sun, then daylight shaded by the building. I water a lot less than friends who dont use the selfwatering method.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I purchased 4 of the gallon size. Kept 2 and gave 1 each to two of my gardening friends. Didn't understand how the water would make it up into the soil, so, I added three flannel wicks to the bottom before filling with potting mix. Filled the reservoir once and watered from the top 3 weeks ago. Still haven't had to re-fil the reservoir. They're outside, so, probably getting a little rain. Planted tuberous begonials in them. They are'nt doing too well - too wet? But, I'll be using them next year for my "water hog" tomatos. Really like the product.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I have three urns that are on the Northeast of my house and get a lot of hot sun almost all day. In the past around August, I would lose plants because the urns would dry out so fast everyday. My Parents told me about your self watering kits and have had great results using them. They are easy to install and fill.

Unfortunately, they are a little flimsy and are hard to push them down into the pot without the base and top coming apart.

We bought two of these this year for large pots. It's too soon to know how well they will do in our 100+ desert weather, but it's bound to diminish the need to water as often. We have pepper plants in ours; I put red tomato mulch on one and it retains water even better, so will put the mulch on the other pot tomorrow also.

Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

This is a useless product. I was so excited to use these and when installing and planting my pots, thought it really was a brilliant design. However, even though I planted my pots with the self-watering containers 4 weeks ago, the water level indicator has yet to move, indicating that the wicking or evaporation is not happening. My plants are dried out all the time and I have to water by hand just as I did before. I quickly returned the unused ones.

By AuntieVerified Purchaser from Virginia on 4/19/2011
Pros:
Holding Capacity
Cons:
Flimsy
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

The self-watering conversion kit has some distinct design flaws. The watering tube does not fit securely into the base and thus when jostled has sunk deeper - below soil level. In addition, there is no way to assess the water level when watering, prior to overflow ie. no indicator in the tube (vs self-watering windowbox with viewable indicator). The pot being "converted" needs drainage holes lest too much water be added by gardener, or God. For a patio, this means some type of exterior pot or saucer. I haven't had a growing season, as yet to assess if the system "works" for it's intent of long-term watering, but thus far would not invest in any others until that has been assessed.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

The black fill tube comes with a white plastic straw that has a floater on top. The floater straw is longer than the black fill tube, so you can't close the lid on the fill tube when it is installed. I wish there were some instructions or a picture on how to assemble this part of the unit.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

DO NOT plant purple fountain grass or spikes in these 1 gal. reservoirs. They develop strong root systems that bind-up the basin. I literally had to cut out the roots they were so entwined.

These are great for geraniums, which really can do well with a little watering, but I bring them inside over the winter. I also winter parsley and chive with the 1 qt. size.

I also have trouble with the tube staying attached at the bottom. It pulls out too easily when you open the top to water.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I started out with 4, just to try them and now have about 14. I transplanted all my plants to the perfect soil mixture - I mixed my own moisture retaining soil mixture . We left 4 weeks in winter and had my neighbor check on my babies, but she never needed to water. So we are free to travel without worry.
Our climate is very dry, mildew is no concern to me.
We'll find out later how they do in the warm dry summer being left alone for 4 weeks.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I've bought the self-watering containters and have had great success using them with my houseplants. I love being able to convert pots I already have into self-watering containers. I used the conversion kit for a cherry tomato plant for my back porch. We have had lots of wind here and while I am having to water many of my other containers daily, the tomato plant only needs me to add to the reservoir about once a week. The plant looks very healthy.

Love this device and we have four of them in the larger size for pots that border the swimming pool holding small palm trees. The description says that the larger unit will fit only larger pots but we find the larger (1 gallon) size perfectly fits pots up to 3 inches smaller than the advertised size.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I've even left off the reservoir, blocked any existing bottom drainage holes, & drilled holes in the sides of containers just below the soil support so I can't drown the plants. This results in a larger reservoir, but couldn't be done easily with ceramic pots. Now if you'd just develop a larger version for barrels & something similar for square pots, I'd be delighted!

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

My outdoor containers were not doing well this summer using regular potting soils, so, purchased these conversion kits along with the self watering container mix to convert all my outdoor containers. I do not have to water so often in the hear, and, the plants do not go through the dry out or drown out cycles as they did before. These work quite well to maintain fairly consistent soil moistness.

Converted large garden containers to self watering containers so no need to water as often in the heat, plus, keeping a steady dampness rather than dry out and drown out cycles. Mine arrived in excellent condition. They are thin plastic, but, anything heavier would not be maleable to fit into containers of different sizes withing the sizing range.

I used one of these systems in a plastic pot on my front porch this year. I am amazed at how little water I have to add to this. The plants have grown really well and require very little care.
I had no problem with assembly; however, the ones I purchased were too large for my flower pots except the one pictured. I've since purchased smaller ones for next season.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

For years I would assemble beautiful potted flower arrangements for outside. Then, we would travel in July for a week and I would come home to badly wilted plants which struggled the rest of the summer. This year..NO MORE! What a difference this product made. I have a pot that sits in full sun all day and I only have to refill the self-watering insert every 5 days. It is in full bloom and does not look the least bit stressed. Pots in partial shade can go even longer. What a welcome addition to my garden. I will be buying more and enjoying them for years to come.

Self-Watering -- I like it, needs tweek
By PlantNutVerified Reviewer from New York on 7/21/2010
Pros:
Attractive Design, Drains Well, Holding Capacity, Weather Resistant
Cons:
Dip stick gets stuck
Best Uses:
Household Plants, Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Self water reservoir is very useful to maintain water in large pots that either tend to go dry quickly or where you don't want to cause root rot.
My only criticism is that the dip stick showing water level in reservoir tends to fall to one side or the other of the water tube and get stuck, preventing accurate readings. It needs a very simple plastic centering insert at the top of the tube to prevent this.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I planted some small vegetable plants in pots on my patio, and because I might be gone for several days during the growing season, I needed to have my son water them. The self-watering conversion kit makes it possible for me to be gone, and watering to be only maybe once a week after the plants are established. My son liked the idea so much, I had to order him some for his pots! I now know to order the larger kits for the bigger pots. There is a tenancy to "over-water" if the straw sticks, but we soon learned to make sure the straw is "free". The ease of use, the quick assembly, and the worry-free function is well worth the minimal cost for this item!

I purchased these for my daughter who is starting to show an interest in growing indoor plants. She has a very hectic lifestyle along with very long days since she is in grad school. I bought these for the first time last year and they were awesome. I bought more this year because I'm trying to convert all my outside planters. On those really hot summer days, you can go without watering for a few days. If we have a "normal" Western New York summer (not as hot and humid), I can water once a week.

By Mumsie from Hillsborough, NC on 7/18/2010
Pros:
Attractive Design, Holding Capacity, Weather Resistant
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

One reviewer said that the small systems didn't work because there was no "wicking" system. That was helpful to know. I used 100% cotton twine, and braided it creating wicks,

I made sure that the know on on end had enough tail to reach the bottom of the bowl. The wick was slipped in between the flexible wings (the knot kept the wick from pulling out)and the tail was at the bottom of the bowl.

I used two for each pot. As I filled with soil, I kept the cotton wicks up through the soil.

They work great! I wish I had through of this when I did the big pots. I wish the company had thought of this. Makes a big difference.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I love the convenience of watering less while my plants are damp and not overwatered. I also like it with the water retention soil I brought to go with it. I have so many plants I couldn't keep them healthy until I started using this system.
I had trouble installing the stem cover and stick indicator. The cover doesn't fit and the stem is too long. Unsure of how short to make it. No instructions for these items. Yet I have learned to do without them and touch the soil to determine dryness.

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

They don't work. Period. I don't know where the water goes but it never gets to the soil or plants. They are always dry and wilted unless I water every 2-3 days. I hoped I could go 5 days at least, without watering. Yes, I used the soil that was recommended which is expensive. And in the winter, it's a huge pain because I'm afraid they will freeze and crack my pots. I end up laying the pots on their sides. Someday, I will go through the nightmare of removing them all and throw them away.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I have a baby fig tree and am using this to keep it watered and growing.
It works well, however it takes up A LOT of room in the bottom of your pot so even though it's recommended for a pot 10-14" in diameter they don't tell you that it's needs to be tall too.
The other semi-negative is that the tube extends but the slightest pressure collapses it and unlike the self-watering boxes, the indicator is not readily visible and gets caught on the inside of the tube so it can't always rise to show you the actual amount of water in the container.
Overall, though, it does work and it's keeping the plant watered and happy.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Used both sizes with transplanted nursery stock. Used the "cowpots" for growing seeds and then transplanted into the pots with conversion kits. I live in area "8" in North Texas. These pots maybe keeping soil (packaged potting soil) moist but not in the upper 2/3s part of pot. Watering required as if conversion kit not there. The water level indicator has not dropped at all. I don't think the design allows for wicking water up into soil.

This is a great idea for keeping a large pot watered that doesn't have it's own reservoir. I used it in a very large pot and while it could have held more water for my container it is definately better than the nothing I had. This way you can be gone for a day or so and not have to worry about having someone water your plant.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I like this self watering pot converter, because up until now I'd been spending LOTS of money on the LeChuza self watering pots. While LeChuza is slick & has a nice red stick to pretty accurately display the water level, this converter does the trick. The bobbing water level stick doesn't seem to move. I've never seen it go down, but I know my plants need water. So I put more in & the stick still doesn't move. It's ok. What this converter does, is allow me to use my own nice pots that I've invested $$ in, and not have to go out & water them every day! That's priceless. Just note, the sizing is a little tough. I bought 6 thinking they'd fit my larger pots as well, and it turns out they did not. Not a lot of guidance there on how to fix that problem, sorry, but just be willing to return, or sell them to a friend, like I did. I use 2, and love them!

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Have had these conversion kits in large pots on the front porch for 2 yrs - didn't work well UNTIL I placed two terry cloth strips through the grate, into the water reservoir and up into the soil. Now the water is drawn up to the roots and I don't have to water but once a week. Without the help of the cloth "wicks" I think it was difficult for the roots to reach down far enough for them to draw water. Love the product!! By the way - the window boxes did not have this problem - they worked perfectly from the start!!

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I live on a windy, fairly sunny lot. My potted, outdoor herbs were frequently stressed by running out of water.

I have made DIY self-waterers. This product makes the job much easier, at a good price and can be used in already existing pots rather than buying an entire new potting system.

The water capacity could be slightly greater but I haven't had it set up long enough to know if this will be a problem when I am away from home for a week or so.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I decided to order more of these after ordering and reading Ed Smith's book Incredible Vegetables from Self-Watering Containers. These offer the flexibility to convert a variety of containers into self-watering containers. I have even used these to turn new (and clean) 5-gallon paint buckets into self-watering planters. Unfortunately, the tube that acts as a water level indicator doesn't always perform reliably. We have had a fairly wet summer so far, so I don't know if the reservoir isn't needing to be refilled often. Adding what seems to be only a little water causes water to drain out the drain holes. Have you also thought about offering a kit with a 2-gallon reservoir for larger containers instead of a maximum of 1 gallon?

It's my first year trying to grow tomatoes in containers and i wanted to give them the best chance. So I purchased 2 large conversion kits for two giant containers that I already had. I placed the pots in a very sunny location. To my surprise, I spotted little tomatoes growing after only three weeks. The conversion kits fit my large pots perfectly and they hold lots of water. So far so good. I'll know more as the season progresses and the weather gets real hot on long Island. If they work I'll be thrilled.

Used gal. size in 2 pots. One pot was about 16" - it works very well and the plants are doing great in it. The water last a long time in the reservoir. I think I add water once a week, and it isn't even dried out (but they do get rain water too). The other pot, at least twice the size (maybe 24") is not doing as well. The water is not moving up to the roots of the plant. Maybe eventually the roots will move farther down.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I already had a self-watering planter which saved a plant that needed more water than the every couple of weeks I would get around to watering. I bought some of the small conversion kits to use in pots I already had. They work well in a couple of my pots but even the small is too big for some of them. Once the kit goes in there's not enough room left for soil and roots. They really work well but I'd like to see something that would work in smaller or more shallow pots.

I made the mistake of taking my measurements for these kits from the top of my tapered pots, so I ended up with two kits that are too small.--Kits need to fit snugly in bottom of container. Directions could be better; Plastic material they are made out of is too thin[...] Would have returned for larger size but had thrown out packaging and need to plant my flowers NOW so an out of luck. Very disappointed with them in general.....

I am using the large self-watering kit in a 20" diameter pot planted with 3 shade-loving perennials (pulmonaria and a fern-like plant whose name I have forgotten). It is fabulous!. I add a little water every 3 days or so and the plants are growing and blooming very well with no wilt. It has been very hot and humid lately with very little rain, but these plants seem completely unaffected. I was also gone for 5 days on vacation and the plants did not seem to miss me at all. I found it very easy to fill from a spouted container. A very worth-while purchase.

I purchased two of these for outdoor pots I am using to grow herbs. From the sizing instructions, I purchased the smaller one, which was on the end of the size range - or the beginning of the large size range. Much too shallow, and the tube too short. Had to build up a "fake" bottom, and now very flimsy. I have purchased the self-watering containers and loved them! Haven't used the second one I purchased.

Since I love the self-watering window boxes I have moved to the next level. I purchased 8 of these. Two of the smaller size and 6 of the larger ones. I have not yet had to water my plants which I planted more than 3 weeks ago after setting them up and giving them a good intial watering. I haven't even had time to check the well and all is looking good. I'm expecting them to perform as well as the window boxes. I prefer the large ones and usually plant in 12 inch caribbean style pots. The large one also worked nice in a 16" pot. The small ones are too small for my needs, but I'm sure that I will still end up using them. I have lots more to plant!!

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I purchased these to convert several expensive pots in lieu of purchasing new ones. They work well, I only have to water my plants a few times a week. However, the filling tube in this size is too short. I had to really lower the soil level in my pots. The tube tends to slide up and down too, making it difficult to get your pots set. After planting 2 pots, I got wise and put soil in the bottom of the pot to raise the height of the reservoir. Those pots are fine. The filling tube cap sometimes does not want to stay closed too, which can be problematic. I imagine when I go to clean my pots at the end of the season, there will be all kinds of "stuff" in the reservoir. Other than the height of the filling tube - they work well and were cheaper than replacing all my pots. I also purchased the larger size for some of my larger pots and did not have problems with the height of the filling tube. The float indicator tends to get caught on the tube/reservoir connection and is not always a reliable indicator of how much water is in the reservoir. But, as long as your pots have drainage holes - it is not a problem. They have saved me a lot of time watering and my plants look great so far! Despite the challenges, I am glad I purchased them - at least I did not have to replace all my pots and it has saved me time watering!

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

We have a lake home that we travel to primarily on weekends only--and I love to have flower pots with beautiful (and these days, expensive) flowers. But, because I am not there to water the pots for about 5 days at a time, these self watering devices will hopefully keep my plants looking good all summer; and not have them suffer the stress of becoming parched and water depleted between weekend trips to the lake. Worth the investment when one thinks about the cost of planting--and wanting the plants to last and look good all summer.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Rating this as average as I've not yet had a chance to see how plants perform. No instructions were included, and I had to email to find out how short to cut water indicator "stick". The principle of the device seems sound, but at first glance it seems somewhat overpriced and not sturdy. I wonder how it will fare in subsequent years (I have to empty my containers each year to avoid freezing and cracking). However, if plants respond, that is all that matters.

SELF WATERING KIT
By palVerified Purchaser from Lexington,KY on 5/13/2010
Pros:
Attractive Design, Holding Capacity, Weather Resistant
Cons:
Three prongs
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

three prongs which go down have three purpose
1) support
2) for roots to grow
3) to draw water from below: this it cannot do until and unless soil mix is in touch with water. And roots are grown long enough to pass through holes for the roots. That is only possible if there are holes in the prongs.
Smaller kit even have no prongs.
I will recommend only if defect is corrected.

Poor Design

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I love the specially designed self-watering containers that you sell so i was very excited to be able to retrofit my own. I was immediately disappointed when i installed it. I ordered the small system, and there is no wicking system to get the water up into the soil! Perhaps relying on only evaporation might work when the plant matures and the roots grow deep into the water reservoir, but i'll have to wait till the end of the growing season for that.

The fill tube is also too short—if i had positioned it low into the (small!) reservoir to keep the reservoir from slipping around in the bottom of the pot, i would've had about 4-5 inches of space at the top of the pot!! I ended up pulling the fill tube up very high when i installed it and as a result the water must be falling outside of the reservoir, because it immediately drains from the pot when i fill it.

Don't even get me started on the positioning of the fill tube itself. It's practically in the center of the pot. That's kindof where i wanted the plant to be.

BAD design.

Wish the black tube was a little taller.

Just planted with this gizmo, so too soon to tell if it will work as intended. There were no instructions for it. Came with a long white tube - not at all clear how to use it. I did not use a filter cloth in the bottom because there were no instructions and it looked like the roots/soil would need to contact the liner for it to deliver the water to plant roots.

Fill tube is so close to center of pot, interferes with plants/planting.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I love these things. I live in Baltimore city and the summers can be brutal. 75% of my gardening is done in containers and usually by early July 50% is dead and by the end of July everything is dead b/c I can't keep up w/ the twice a day waterings. These helped my plants make it all the way through the summer.

I came back this year to buy several more for the pots that I had not converted.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Used the gallon size in a pair of large pottery pots I already owned. These were on the deck of a cottage I can only get to on the weekends, and they were full and healthy all summer long. Everyone who visited commented on how beautiful the combinations were, but I knew that the real hero was this watering system. They ended looking like the pots in catalogue pictures!
Well worth the money, and I'm ordering more this year.
Now, I just want some inserts like this for rectangular trough type containers, or a reservoir container for porch railings. My self watering window boxes from you were also incredible looking.

By gardengirl from West Covina, CA on 4/28/2010
Cons:
Flimsy, Re-design needed
Best Uses:
Household Plants, Outdoor Plants, Plant Transferal
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

After assembling, adding the plants and soil, when re-filling the reservoir the pipe extension does not stay in place (it get's shorter) and the cap does not stay fastened. The pipe extension needs to be re-designed to stay in place. When plants are small, I'm not sure that the roots will reach the water reservoir so it still need to be top watered. Time will tell as to the efficiency of the self-watering concept.

No Wicking Mechanism with 1-Quart
By KellyVerified Reviewer from Cape May, NJ on 4/25/2010
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

While the 1-gallon version has 3 'legs' that always allow the soil contact with the water reservoir, the 1-quart version has nothing. The description states that the soil will stay moist via evaporation, yeah right. I think that they should have at least included a fabric wick that is used in many of the other self-water planters they sell.

My advice - buy the 1-gallon model but skip the 1-quart version.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

This product is just what the doctor ordered! With the regular rainfall this spring, I have yet to need to water the plants (excluding the initial fill-up of course) since the planter was set up! You just need to handle the product with kid gloves until it's in place. My planters are 18" wide and 22" deep and the filler neck is perfectly adjustable to reach deeper if needed. Well worth the money!

Defective, Flimsy
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I read many of the reviews about the product's watering tube not being long enough, but brushed them aside hoping for the best. The watering tubes though are not NEARLY long enough. My planter is not one of those gigantic deep planters... and it falls about 6" short. Also, the measurement is NOT from the opening of the planter, but the bottom of the planter (for example, my planter tapers down at the bottom to only accommodate the smaller conversion kit, but that size is not practical for the large hibiscus I planted above it). I ordered six of them. I am keeping one that I beat to death and returning the others.

Cons:
Does not keep soil moist, No instruc for assembly
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I only had the picture in the catalog to guide me on proper assembly. The kits do not work as the soil is only in contact with the water when the reservoir in full. Once the water goes down at all there is nothing to draw the water into the soil. The pots dry out even if the reservoir is 3/4 full. I plan to remove the system from the pots and simply at Soil Moist to the soil instead. If I am doing something wrong, then let me know.

Haven't used them through a summer season yet, but all seems good - sturdy, even tho I didn't have directions included, I found them online and they were very easy to put together. I bought the smaller ones (1 qt.)and have since bought the larger ones( 1 gallon). The diameter measurement is not an ideal method to decide which size is needed for pots. I was glad I only bought a few small ones until I could see which would work. May write again after the summer.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I purchased a similar product for nearly three times the cost. This product has a similar water basin, floating mechanism, and tubing as the one I bought from another company. The flexible wings on this one actually conform to different size pots, the English Mona Watering system does not. If this product saves or at a minimum extends the life of your plants, then buying these things actually saves you money in the long run.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I have just started using these on outdoor potted plants so I am not sure if the water evaporation method will be able to supply enough water.
The only real con is that the water spout is not quite long enough. It should be about 2"-3" longer as it does not reach the top on deeper pots.
It could be trimmed, if necssary, to a shorter length.

Cons:
Placement of fill tube
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

1) FILL PORT/TUBE TOO SHORT.When I put the insert into a pot, even the original one it came with, the black watering tube was WAY too short to stick up above the dirt. The only way I could use it was to pull it as high as I would without disconnecting from the base, and then pack the dirt and Plant in to hold it in place. I'm off to [...] to find some PVC pipe of same diameter so I can make a taller fill port. 2)FILL/TUBE PORT NEEDS TO BE ON THE SIDE It would also be more helpful to have the fill tube/port located more to the edge. Every plant I transplanted using the 1-Q or 1-GAL inserts I had to carve out a place in the side of the plant-ball so it would fit around the fill tube. The fill tube then ended up being almost in the middle of the plant and harder to access to fill.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

My plants are doing great now! I got these gallon conversion kits to minimize the daily watering of plants in my larger 6 gallon planters. For the first few weeks, I had to continue to water almost every day still because in our hot summer in southern CA (ZONE 10), the top of the soil felt dry. While I am sure that the longest roots that were touching the top were getting the water in the reservoir, the shorter roots were not and thus, dry leaves fell from not enough water. Over the cooler months and as the roots develop, I hope I will only have to water/fill reservoir once a week. Maybe if I had gotten the soil Gardeners recommends and sells, my plants would have done better from the getgo.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

The biggest challenge is finding a container to fit the self watering kit. Must take into consideration not only the fit for the bottom tray/bowl, but also the height of the fill tube. Flexible colander-style screen adjusts nicely to container shape. Used the small kit for outdoor container. Watered weekly rather than daily, and it seemed to prevent plants from drying out. Also bought as a gift, and would recommend to others. Though self watering containers might be the easier choice, if you don't want to shop around for your own containers.

I live in Phoenix, AZ where summer temprature can kill a human waiting on a bus! I put this products in four of my planters outside which are not watered by automatic drip system.
I planted annuals in two pots and Hibiscus in two others. Once the roots grow and hit the reservoir, then I would say this product should work fine for me but till then, I will still need to water my platns twice a day in the summer since the roots are not reaching the reservoir and the dirt on top of this system will still dry out so quickly in this heat. I will see how it's woking in a month or two!!!

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I modified my outside hanging baskets by replacing the drip irrigation I installed last year with these self-watering conversion kits. I live in TX and it has already been b/w 100 & 105 degrees. The soil has NOT dried out in this heat & full sun exposure and I have only had to refill the 4 qt (1 gallon) containers every 4-5 days. That often may sound terrible to others in cooler areas, but having hanging planters on drip irrigation in a non-dedicated zone (read: on lawn zone) is a no-win situation; either the plants or lawn will pay the price (probably both). Plus I simply throw my water soluble fertilizer in w/ the water.

It's been cooler for the past 2 weeks (high 80's, low 90's). Only have to refill every 10-14 days.

Highly recommend.

I always get busy and forget to check on my plants need for water. It usually does not end in disaster, but in the winter months it can. With this reservoir, I don't have to worry so much. I just put the water in, the plants get the water they need, and I can forget about them for a few days. I especially like it for the winter when my plants are in the cellar and I don't get to visit with them as often.

I had 2 old self-watering Terrazza planters. the watering tubes had broken on both through out the years, and the color had faded. This year I painted them with the new spray paint for plastic, and purchased new selfwatering conversion kits. They look brand new again, and the plants in them are well watered and look wonderful.

I love this product! I can leave for our summer place and not worry about my potted plants. Used two last year and now ordered two more this year. Bottom Line:

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I bought these to use in a rather large pot, the flare on the 1 gallon size was not quite large enough to touch the sides of the planter, however that was not the problem it is the refill tube - it is too short. I even bought one of the Gardener's Supply planters that came with the self-watering set up and the refill tube was too short for it (top was down inside the post over about two inches). A couple years ago I bought the a french copper bucket and that refill-tube could be extended in a variety of lengths. I wish this product had a refill tube that is adjustable in length, otherwise so far the concept works well. It does help hold some extra water for the pots that are on a patio or deck and this is what I like about the product.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

The self-watering kits and planters are great and I've bought several of them over the past few years. The only significant downside I've experienced is poor durability with the self-watering kit after a few seasons. The edge on the screen that holds back the dirt gets brittle (it consists of little flaps that flex when inserted into the pot) and break off. Unfortunately, a replacement part is not available and a whole new kit must be purchased - and it's not cheap. Now I have lots of spare parts!

This is working beautifully. No more droopy plants when I get home from work! I would like to see them made sturdier as the outside edge of the platform collapses under the weight of the soil, but it hasn't been a problem. I would also like to see some larger ones for 20" and 24" pots.
I'm planning of converting more pots to self watering in the future because these really work.

The item is fine and will work well. However, the lack of instructions is a serious problem. I think that I will be able to figure it out by looking at my other self watering pots and abook on how to grow vegetables in self watering container. If I just had received this item without having the book or the previous full self watering pots, I would have been lost on how to put it together. Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I have strictly a container vegetable garden and was looking for a solution to turn my existing pots into self-watering. I already had a lot of very large plastic pots and did not have the $$ to buy a whole new bunch of very expensive self-watering containers and this was a perfect solution at a reasonable price. The parts went together well. I had one inserted ready to go in 15 minutes. The one note is to be careful not to push down too hard on the tube lid to prevent pushing the tube back down into the resevoir. I only bought 2, and will be purchasing more for next year.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

The self-watering conversion kits are extremely easy to use and work great. I especially like to use them for my pots that do not get rain water directly from the sky. My plants look great and it is so easy to check if they need more water or not.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Great product! I bought two and use them in the two large pots on my front steps. The pots get absolutely baked in the harsh, Southern afternoon sun, but this product keeps my plants happy and lush. One drawback, one of the caps stopped fitting properly after one week. It is more annoying than inconvenient though.

Not working so far
By JoanVerified Reviewer from Mansfield, TX on 6/8/2009
Pros:
Holding Capacity, Weather Resistant
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

My pot was a bit wider at the bottom than required, so I propped up the bowl with styrofoam. This brought the water much closer to the plants, but it seems to make no difference. I still have to water the pot every day and do not see the water level going down much through the spout. The water is not being absorbed up through the plants, so what good is this to me? Do I have to wait for the roots to get down into the holes for this to work? That could take a while and if you change the plants seaasonally, it is conceivable that this will never work as advertised. I am disappointed.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I bought 5 self watering kits. One of them was for the pot on my father's grave. We live some distance from the cemetery so it will reduce trips to the cemetery. They were easy to assemble and insert into the pots. I also have the self watering window box and have won runner up in a contest with Gardener's Supply with flower plantings one season. Also have 3 of your hanging baskets and they cut watering time as well. Have gone 2 weeks without watering the window box after it was first planted. What is also nice is that the parts to the self watering window box system can be replaced if they become broken. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

Love the windowbox self waterer - works perfectly! but was disappointed when I installed the conversion kits - the water did not draw up into the soil, probably because I did not use the self watering potting soil. I'm ordering the soil and hopefully that will help.

Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I have a dozen or so large self-watering tomato planters, as well as, decorative large flower pots and hanging baskets. This is a great idea and great product. Self-watering pots and expensive. However, with this product I can convert the larger inexpensive flower pots into excellent self-watering pots. Unlike most brick & mortar store pots that only hold a small amount of water, this conversion allows for a large gallon water reservoir, and is much easier to fill.
