All of our self-watering planters protect against drought, but this one does more — it has a water-level indicator that tells you when to refill the reservoir, and a convenient funnel that lets you water from the top. Made of UV-stabilized polypropylene, these planters resist cracking, chipping and fading, and the sides are braced to prevent bowing.

I bought two of the 31" in the spring. Assembly was easy. Drilled holes as instructed for outdoor use. Never had a problem with it overfilling when it rained. I grow four green bean pole plants in one & short round carrots with chives in the other. I also ran a dripper into each water spout that was connected to my landscape irrigation system so I never had to hand water. All the plants did great. They kept kicking until frost. The only issue I had with these is the water-level indicator. The plastic sticks kept getting stuck. I would highly recommend these for the price. I am ordering two more for next year!

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I upgraded to these to use as liners for my cedar windowboxes. They wouldn't look good enough as windowboxes alone. During weeks of 100-degrees this summer I only had to water once a week compared to every day for my traditional pots. With the water reservoir, I was worried about mosquitoes but once the boxes are planted mosquitoes can't access.
I did do some extra work to try to reduce watering (Dallas Texas has long hot summers).
1. Added water absorbing polymer crystals to the potting soil
2. I used a potting soil with a wetting agent to aid water absorbency (MiracleGro SoilMoist).
There were only a few misses with this product:
1. The water level indicator lids don't stay down and soil isn't supposed to drop down in the reservoir.
2. The water level indicators didn't really work so I ended up sticking my finger in the soil anyway.
3) The self-watering wicking material didn't cover the entire bottom of the planter. I think it should. I'm going to add water absorbent mats like those used in hanging baskets to aid watering to see if it works. The self-watering aspect worked even with the material not covering completely.
4. You can't use this out in the landscape without the drainage holes and then I don't see how it would be self-watering anymore. Mine are under the sofits of my house and don't get rained on at all so it works great.

We have a summer home. Plants don't dry up when we are not there to water them. We have the planters on the seawall for decoration.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
The design flaw is that the filler tube does not fit securely into the reservoir. Also, there was no indicator to show when the water was low. Other than that the unit works well.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
The mints, stevia, and chamomile I planted in one of these containers are growing beautifully; and the radishes I planted in another container grew very well. It's great to have self-watering containers small and light enough to move; but large enough for herbs and veggies.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I bought two of these, one has strawberries and the other broccoli and lettuce. It's been over a month and I've already picked a few berries and harvested some lettuce and the broccoli is growing very well. I will definitely be buying a couple more next year.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I used one to grow leaf lettuce and it's growing beautifully in this planter. Since the plants receive a steady supply of water, they are really thriving.
Mild chard (perennial spinach) was planted in another. It's also doing great.
These handy planters should work great for growing salad veggies most of the year.
Inexpensive, wonderful planters.
You can't go wrong with these whether you use them for ornamentals or edible crops.

This Is my first time using these containers. I won't know how well the plants do until about August. So far setting up my little garden has been pretty easy.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
In the beginning, had a bit of a problem getting the water level just right, but my Mesclun is thriving. Started from seed and I've already had several harvests of the young greens. Unfortunately, I'm probably going to need to get a cover as the birds have deemed it their own salad bowl!

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Attractive and well made. Takes the guess work out of watering.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Out of the three Boxes the interior parts were malformed on all three. One flap was only about 1/4 as large as needed to cover the hole. The other two don't shut. I put rocks on them.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
The paperwork that came with the planter was not helpful. The gauge does not work very well, and I ended up over watering, soaking the soil and losing plants. I'm trying again with a second batch at this time.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Our porch gets very hot in the afternoon. Planters there had to be watched carefully in the past. The pansies in these planters with 'just right' watering are much bigger than same flat plants we put in the ground.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This is just another really good product from this company. The size is perfect for starting seeds and bulbs. I especially like the idea that it is self-watering.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
very nice large planter but limited directions on usage.
light weight for it's size
you do have to drill for outside use and that limits it, so if you drill it you have to leave it outside unless you can plug the holes.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I just recently purchased this planter. Its wonderful. I planted seeds in the pot and I now have two rows of beets growing. I know that if I forget to water my beets the planter's self watering design will give them water. So I don't have to worry if I forget to water them.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I have so many problems keeping plants up from the animals without them overdrying on my deck which gets full sun. This was perfect for my strawberries and herbs. The price was great and it looks very nice.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Last year I ordered 2 of these self watering troughs. I had flowers on my steps all summer and winter. I now have ordered 2 more, and have them near my entrance. Next year I plan on ordering 2 more.

The self-watering trough has made my life easy. Just fill with water and forget it. I've been able to grow plants in my arid region that I couldn't grow before.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I am a new gardener and decided to try these planters since they are self-watering and appeared to be easy to use. I have had great success with Florida winter plants such as lettuce (arugala, romaine, buttercress), strawberries and broccoli. I can't wait to see how these do for my summer plants.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Self-watering containers are hard to find. I grow a lot of container veggies and flowers. These are attractive, and I don't have to worry about watering every day. I would have more, but they cost too much.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Loved it! attractive and easy to use. Like the fact you can tell when the water needs to be replenished.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I successfully sprouted tomatoes in these things. If I can, _anyone_ can!

WE ARE FULL-TIME RV'ERS. WE HAD ANOTHER BRAND THAT WAS BIGGER, BUT HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO TRANSPORT - THESE ARE PERFECT - AND SO IS THE PRICE! WE JUST HAVE A FEW TOMATO PLANTS IN ONE AND FLOWERS IN THE OTHER TWO. THEY ALL SEEM TO LOVE THEIR NEW HOMES.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This planter is very attractive and has great root room. The only drawback for outdoors in my rainy climate in fall/winter/spring is the lack of bottom drainage - the planter will simply flood. With bottom drainage, though, the self-watering mechanism won't work. Best for indoors or under patio or eave cover in a rainy climate. Otherwise, very nice planter.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Perfect for my classroom windows. Plants do well even during long breaks without watering.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I have a backyard that is full of tree roots and infested with gophers and moles. I bought four of these to line up along the front of a planting bed so that I can have a border of color without the varmints eating them or the tree roots choking them! I have a number of other self watering planters for the same reason.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This self-watering container is not nearly as easy to use as the large round pots, at least for outdoor gardening. You have to drill holes into the container to use it outside and it is very difficult to tell when you've added enough or too much water. It does seem to be sturdy enough to withstand the elements and holds plenty of plants!
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I love this and the tomato success pots too. they do need to have holes drilled for outside use but other then that this is a great pot. i like that bugs can't get into the water (keeps bees away) and that it holds alot of water for those 'hot dry days'.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
After a short time the plastic cover on the watering tube would not close which evaporated the water quickly. Also the tubes are hard to keep in place. Need a design that will secure them in place.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I do not think this works well for shallow rooted annuals. Perennials with deeper roots would probably work better. The plant roots need to grow deep enough to reach the reservoir for this to be effective and most annuals do not have deep roots. I am having to water almost as frequently as I would in a normal pot. I had hoped to be able to water every 3rd day but at best it is every other day. Perhaps next Spring when I plant annuals in the pots, I will add Soil Moist crystals which should extend the need to water to every 3rd day.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I have the tomato success kit and that self watering pot works great. The water level gauge accurately shows where you're at and the spillover holes prevent overfilling. The level gauges on this flimsy thing are terrible. The little float thing has a tendency to get stuck so you're filling away without a clue how much water is actually in there and without an overflow hole you can easily waterlog your pot. I stopped using the self-watering part and just hand water the plants currently in there... sad.

Before I didn't have very good results with growing peppers in the garden (never could keep them watered enough). For the past 4 years I've been growing my peppers in these containers and I have fantastic luck. I have the best luck with hot peppers. This year I am trying green bell peppers and they are doing great.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
1) I have lots of these plants and have given several way for gifts already planted.
2) When it rains, it fills up with water and just about killed my plants. Wish their was an easy drain for it in case it should rain again.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
It's hard to keep up with the sun-beating days at 7,000 feet but the Self-Watering Trough Planter is the best thing I've found to fit the bill. My deck herb garden has never looked so good and I don't have to worry about coming home to wilted herbs!

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Once plants occupy more soil space in mid-summer, the self-watering planter is the easiest way to keep them watered in the hot dry weather
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
The set up of the planter was quick and easy. Maintenance is simply checking the water level and adding water to the spout. My plants are handsomely displayed! I am totally satisfied.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This slim self-watering container is excellent for growing leaf lettuces and other greens on your patio, porch or in your backyard. The water filling funnel and the water gauge are easily accessible and very useful. We also have several of the larger self-watering containers and they've been durable workhorses for several years showing almost no sign of weathering or wear.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I bought 2 planters to hang from my block wall fencing. I filled both with herbs and they work great. I needed something that would not take up too much room.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Plants grow wonderful; like the window planters, water-level indicator did not work after first fill-up; I resort to filling reservoir until it overflows.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
These are not particularly attractive, and I would not really enjoy seeing it on my deck. However, it is fine inside a decorative container. The fill spout is pretty small at the top and I can only turn the hose on low to fill it, but the water level indicator is helpful.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This product is easy to use and to get your plants started. I have had it for 2 years on the railing on my porch and the flowers look great every year. It is easy to keep filled with water.
The only problem is storing it in the garage in the winter so that it does not freeze and break the planter.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
It would be nice to have a cheaper, smaller model along the same lines and in the same design, for small gardens such as mine.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This is a great product for the part-time or forgetful gardener. I live in an extremely hot climate, and sometimes go away for a few days - or just forget daily waterings. Before I purchased this planter, it was rare for my windowbox plants to remain alive through the summer. Now I can trust the health of my plants to its simple, practical, fail-safe self-watering design.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I have several self-watering planters on my patio. They really add a lot of beauty and enjoyment to my home.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I have a very large deck at the back of my house. I wanted something to add color but not take up much floor space. I purchased two of these planters and two of the 15" brackets to go with them. They are full of petunias that are cascading down the deck rails next to my furniture. It is gorgeous!
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
my yard is populated with chipmunks & our dog is determined to dig them all up & play with them, so i resorted to container gardening for my flowers this year. next year i'll try veggies.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Easy to use. Lightweight and easy to in stall on a fence. Makes my yard look more colorful.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Instructions were not included in the box, so I didn't begin correctly and managed to kill some of the first plants. The long walls bow out with wet soil, despite the claim that they don't.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
If we go away for a few days or a week I no longer have to get someone to add water to the planters, they take care of themselves!
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
I love this product, I decided to use it for vegatables this summer since I'm always fighting for sun. My vegtables are growing like wild. And if the sun moves I could move them with it.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
The pepper plants I am growing in these self-watering planters are doing great. The watering is greatly simplified over traditional containers and the plants don't dry out if you keep the resevoir filled. It is also easy to add fertilizer for optimal plant health.
I will grown more vegetables next year in these planters.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This product is great if you're like me and often forget to water your plants daily. I decided to buy them after a friend of mine, who has a very sunny patio, had success with them. She'd tried other planters before, but in July, the soil would dry up and her plants would wither. She hasn't had that problem since she tried these planters. Only downside is that I wish it would tell you before you order that you need a certain size bit to drill holes before using. I didn't have the right one and couldn't assemble the planters until I borrowed one from somebody.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
We have been in stage 3 drought for the past year. In June, our temps hit 98F to 102F. Thanks to these planters, I have the only green deck around! I filled 3 of your planters on your deck rail hangers with alpine strawberries and petunias, and I recycle dish pan water by pouring directly from the dish pans into the watering tube. I couldn't keep anything green on the deck in this drought without these planters!
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
These self-watering containers are a revolution for gardening. Just returned from a two-week vacation and my plants look absolutely wonderful in this container.

Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Except for the indicator not working for me and two other people who have them, and being hard to fill (I REALLY wish I had bought that filler gadget to put on a hose before it was discontinued.) the planter works well. It would be nice if you still (or again) had a deeper version for carrots. I am lucky enough to have two of the older, deep root versions which I am using for the first time this year and the carrots are doing a hundred times better than the ones I planted in the ground. The Swiss Chard grew so fast that I had some for supper last night.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
Placed the trough planter in a saw buck and set in 12 bright red Petunias. Showy in the "Nth" degree.
Comments about Self-Watering Trough Planters:
This is super! Even held up with a cross country move. You don't have to water every day. Gauge tells you when the water is low. Be careful with putting in soil so that the gauge does not come out.
