It is a very attractive planter. I have the 3' sq in bronze (really Brown). The reservoir and fill pipe leave a lot to be desired, though. The fill pipe does not seat securely/tightly into the reservoir, so the "fill to here" line is meaningless. Water runs out of the reservoir through the bottom and never rises up the fill pipe. Having water in the reservoir does keep the soil moist. And the size is good, easy to reach the plants from all sidess.

We love our Self-Watering Terrazza Raised Bed! It only took my husband and I about an hour to assemble. We filled it and planted our green beans, squash, carrots, and beets on the Friday that we put it together and the seeds were sprouting on Tuesday of the next week-only 4 DAYS after planting!! The drainage is working well, we have had a lot of rain but the garden is still looking great. We plan to buy a couple more of these gardens next year.

I love my raised bed! With casters, it is mobile and I can easily move it to the best location for sunlight and I can move it into the garage for winter storage. My vegetable plants are growing like crazy. If I have to go out of town, I can fill up the water reservoir and not worry about them drying out. It is the perfect size for a one-person garden.

It too soon to tell how well the self-watering feature works - we've had so much rain lately that it always well watered.
Holds a lot of dirt! We put in ten 40 lb bags of top soil and it could actually hold another bag or two.
Was somewhat difficult for clutzy people to assemble - took us nearly an hour to get the sides hooked together. Then our dishwasher repairman showed up and finished the assembly in about 5 minutes without looking at the directions. Also, don't understand how the gauges are supposed to work.

My 10 yo daughter and I were struggling to put these together and she figured out the key- which made it NO SWEAT. Put the posts and sides together UPSIDE down, then pound gently with a rubber mallet. They went together very smoothly this way and I avoided teaching her how to swear! :)

I used to have a brown thumb, but this makes growing veggies easy - even from seed in drought conditions. It hasn't rained since I got this, but the soil has stayed moist, even though I've only filled the reservoirs once a week (I expect to do it more often once the Oklahoma summer kicks in.) My husband and I had no trouble setting it up - it took us around fifteen minutes. My only complaint is that the little caps on the bottom of the fill spouts kept coming off - but a little duct tape took care of that. No other problems; no leaks or missing parts, etc. I can't comment on drainage because it hasn't rained...but so far it's my best garden purchase ever. Would love to get a couple of the troughs for asparagus beds. They'd be perfect!

I ordered two of these very early this year to start a tomato box and bean, pepper, and other box. My husband and I had them assembled in about an hour and a half, there was a little confusion but all was figured out. In April I started my gardening and in late May I already had picked my first tomato. From there on out, I was having a produce explosion until August when I went away for two weeks and the hubby neglected my garden. They are awesome and work well. They do have some flaws though, the water gauge/place where you fill the resoviours is faulty, but works. The gauge to read it for me is a moot point (I'm in Zone 7 in the south) as I knew I was going to have to fill it up every 2-3 days no matter what. Though, the gauge itself is flimsy and hard to read. As well as the entire thing that fits in the hole to fill the resovours is loose fitting. Which means little hands, or things getting stuck can make it come out. I didn't have this problem luckily, but it was always a concern. Overall, that is biggest fault I can find with it. I will be ordering at least two more next year to expand my tomato, pepper, and bean plants. These are truly some of the best things I have bought for gardening in a long time. The video is a collection of pictures that I took right before the peak of my harvesting. Everything really was that green, red, orange, etc. All the planters seen in the video were bought from here, and all work great!

Looks great and has a large capacity. Once it's full of soil it's extremely heavy and the planter frame is not really strong enough to withstand trying to lift or move it - therefore had to empty it out again and put on casters. One strange aspect of it is that when I fill the reservoir with water, it seems like at least 1/4 of the water I pour in comes gushing out the side walls. It makes sense to have overflow drainage - but this is water gushing out even when the tank is mostly empty. Seems like a sloppy design.

My only suggestion would be to put water in the reservoir before filling with soil to make sure that there aren't any leaks because once it is filled with soil it is very difficult to fix a leak in the reservoir pan. Otherwise, these planters are great.

We have a new huge patio out back, which faces South with no shade, so the self-watering feature is crucial to me. We added the casters to all of the planters I bought since I am not sure where their "permanent" places will be. The product seems to be of good quality, but I was very irritated when I realized I would need to spend another $100+ in order to buy 10-11 bags of the self-watering planting material. I had already received the planter and given it as a gift, so there was no turning back. It's not like I didn't have another option -- like using cheaper topsoil since it wouldn't 'wick" The bags of plant material should be included and shown in the price. It's like ordering something that needs batteries and then finding out the batteries are not included and cost another $100 !!

First-time gardener, I purchased six of these large raised beds last year and followed Ed Smith's book on growing vegetables in self-watering planters. I was attracted to these because I'm busy, I knew continuous water would reap better results, and I liked the idea of knowing my soil (used Ed's recipe) was entirely organic. They were hard to assemble. I needed my mechanically inclined Dad, an exacto knife, and a rubber mallot. I leveled the beds in the yard for even water distribution and had an amazing first season of organic vegetables. I followed Ed's tips to dry them out during Fall and covered with a heavy tarp. They came through the winter (in MA) beautifully. Season 2 - the garden is up and everything is working and looking like new except for some of the plastic covers to the watering tubes which aren't as durable so take that part inside over winter.

Didn't find this difficult to assemble...all told about 20 minutes after laying out all pieces and examining instruction diagrams over and over (usually I leave assembly to the BF). The self-watering tubes kept falling apart, so I taped them together before installing them and the dirt. Once the soil and seeds were added, I starting putting water down the tubes...after about 10 minutes I realized that the water was spilling over the trays and falling into the area under my deck. So, from the start, the self-watering feature doesn't work; however, this is a nice raised bed for a rookie like me. I did add water crystals to the soil because I do travel a lot for work and wanted to make sure my babies are watered while I am gone. Would have been nice if the self-watering feature actually worked, but I knew I was risking it after reading all the reviews prior to purchasing.

I bought this raised bed specifically for the self-watering feature. However, the tubes that go down to the water basins are very flimsy and cheaply designed. I have had this planter for about a month, and already one of the tubes has lost its pieces in the water basin. There is no way to fix this without removing the dirt AND my plants. Obviously this will not happen this summer. Also, the water tubes don't "lock" in at all. My toddler has pulled them out several times, and they are very difficult to put back in. I'm sure this has not helped the situation, but even without the toddler abuse, these tubes were poorly designed.

Otherwise, this planter is great. It's sturdy, looks nice, and it really wasn't that hard to put together. I just wouldn't have spent so much money for a plain old planter. Knowing what I know now, I wish I had just bought some less expensive regular raised beds. Those along with a sprinkler set on a timer would have been much more practical.

The beds are very attractive & seem well made for the price. The assembly is a little awkward & takes some time, but not insurmountable. I was attracted to this product on size & self watering feature (but not on price!). Live in a condo with a 10x12 raised deck that faces south so this is an gardening experiment. I am using 'one foot' garden techniques to grow 'dwarf'corn, beans, tomato, carrots, etc. I ordered the self-watering soil and would have liked to see the material mix ratio. I'll check in with results at end of growing season.

Although the instruction could be a little more detailed, the diagrams do help; so look closely at the images when assembling and you really shouldn't have any problems. The first container took less than 20-minutes to assemble and the second one in less than 7-minutes.

I just recently set both of them up, so it's still too early to determine if the self-watering trays and wicks are working properly. However, I have noticed, when using the fill tubes to add water to the trays, the water level floats (which are very flimsy) in both containers do not adjust to the water being added. Short of removing all the soil, it's hard to determine if the trays are actually filled to capacity.

Make sure to purchase enough soil for your raised bed, I thought I had enough, and had to go out and buy more, they really are a nice deep raised bed and great for any deep rooted vegetables.

They are a bit pricey, but very attractive and compact, and if everything goes well with these two this season, I will probably be putting another one to my wish list.

Bought this for a third floor deck garden. The tomato plants, basil, parsley and flowers are doing great! Only 1 comment that you might add to the instructions- you should fill the resevoir pan BEFORE putting the rest of the planter together and the dirt in. I bought one of these in Feb. and set it up to make sure everything looked ok. I put it on the patio, and it has been exposed to wind, rain, snow, freezing, thawing. I'm pleased to see that the reservoir didn't crack through all the weather changes. I bought another one last month and set it up. One of the panels that fits over the reservoir was cracked, but I decided it was usable. The second unit was easier to assemble, but both were easy enough. I followed someone else's tip and added some water to the reservoir and leveled the unit. Still haven't added soil. The size of this planter makes it easy to grow quite a lot of vegetables year round. The only problem I have with it is that the water intake hose falls apart. The tops broke off of all of them within the first season, and with my oldest one - in its third year of use - the entire exposed end of it cracked into pieces. I have three of them now, with strawberries, beans, beets, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, borage, and the end of winter's kale and collards growing in them.

So far so good. As long as you keep the reservoir full the soil stays wet. The float indicator doesn't seem to work well but I just keep adding water until the overflow kicks in. The weather has been mild thus far. I hope it performs when it starts hitting 90-100 degrees daily.

I loved the product when it arrived a few weeks ago. We put it together, with some difficulty, but filled it with soil and began planting seeds. Within just a few weeks I have radishes and tomatoe seedlings. We bought the large one last year and really liked it, and have now bought a second smaller one for herbs using the larger one for vegetables.
Difficult to assemble but once done we really like it. The water gauges are useless, think we are going to buy plastic tubing and fill with a funnel. Probably will work better than what is provided. They come apart all the time, ball is in the water instead of in the tube. It could maybe be superglued together before inserting, but still the gauge doesn't show water level. We bought a watering can at the dollar store and just water every couple of days unless we go out of town. It should come with wheels instead of selling separately.

It works great for people livig on military bases, you get alot of space and it works with the restrictions of military homes. I agree with some of the other posts about it not being easy to assemble and the water gauges being flimsy, but overall, I loved the results from the planter and look forward to getting at least one more. I really do like this container and it did work well last year for me when the weather was hot and dry, however, this year it has been cool and very wet and the container is not set up to drain water out if needed. I transferred my plants from their current containers into the raised bed and they have more than double in size in just two weeks. My only concern is one of the two water level indicators doesn't seem to be working. It fell apart during shipping and I must not have put it back together correctly.

This was not really difficult to put together. Some of the pieces could be a better fit, but it is very solid and attractive on the patio. The only problem was when I filled the water reservoirs--the water started to leak from the bottom of the bed. No big deal, I just water it from the top like anything else. I have two of the large, square planters on my deck. They have worked wonderfully for keeping my beds moist in spite of full, open sun and 90+ heat. They also worked great for peas and mesclun in early spring.[...] I'm glad I put the beds together in spite of the flaw, or I would have missed out on the entire growing season! I just hope the one bed holds up during the winter, since water can get into the side and freeze/crack due to the flaw (which is about 3 inches square, where a piece is completely missing). This is a perfect option for someone who does not want to permanently place a raised bed in their yard. I have planted and harvested arugula. Certain parts did not fit correctly. When we contacted Gardeners Supply they advised us to bang them into place with a hammer. If you insist on buying this thing go directly to step 6 in the assembly directions - if you can't complete that step don't waste your time - send it back.

I am using this for eggplants, green beans, peppers, tomatoes, lettuce etc. Works great for a deck garden except you still have to water every day! The small wicking system does nothing to help water the plants. The only benefit is deep soil for roots of plants. first time doing a veggie. garden. I picked this design as I have had great success growing climbing roses (second year) in the same brand self water planter. Great design, and principle. I planted already established plants on Memorial day and they are doing great. Harvested my first lettus last week. Easy to tend to them also. No bunny problems yet, maybee since they are up high. I did not like the water reservoir configuration, two seperate reserviors to fill per planter. That was kind of cheap retrofit to use the planter reserviors in this unit. anway, seems pricy, but I like it, and you tend to get what you pay for. I would recomend it's purchase.

I bought 2 of these planters. The first one was very confusing to assemble and I needed help from someone else. After seeing how it was done, I did the 2nd one myself with no problems at all. All the small pieces were just thrown into the box without being wrapped in plastic, so be careful when opening the box!! I have them both on my deck with 4 tomato plants in each one and they are doing great (so far). No need to buy the special trellis, just use basic tomato cages. the water gauge does work ok, but it sticks, so you have to keep pushing on the little stick to make sure it is not stuck, so you can tell how much water is in it. My main concern at this point is in the Fall, they say you need to let the water dry out so it won't freeze over winter, but there is no way to drain it and how do you know if it is dried???? I plan to leave them out over winter, here in Minnesota, so they better not break!! I will cover them with a tarp. They are way too heavy to lift, once filled with dirt. I think the casters could be bigger, they are pretty hard to move with all the weight. But at this point, I just LOVE them!!!!!

I purchased 2 of the Self-Watering Patio Planters 6 year ago when I lived in a condo and loved them. I was having difficulty finding a good location in my yard of our new house for a garden and finally decided to use more self watering planters and try these larger self watering terrazza in place of a whole gardern. They are working for everything (tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, spinch, onions, green beans, pumpkins, squash and watermelons). They are difficult to fill with water and they tend to leak it but the plants are doing well. I had a garage sale and the planters were a big hit with people. I was handing out your website to dozens of people. I am not certain if they are worth it. I really like the smaller self watering planters which are able to be moved if needed but can grow the same plants and do not leak.

I wanted to start growing vegetables and needed a container with a bottom (so the rabbits couldn't get in). I ordered two of them and put them in the corner of my property near the woods (the only place that gets 6 hours on sun) I ordered the green planters and they look very nice in their setting. I bought the planter for my parents who love growing vegetables but they have mostly patio space. The plants and seeds planted are growing very well and they liked the look of the planter in the patio area. Assembly was not difficult. My son and I put it together with very little effort. We use it for a mini organic vegetable garden and so far it is doing the job nicely. I love that it has the reservoir, so we don't have to worry about watering. It is good looking, too.

I have to reserve judgment on how well this will perform during this coming growing season as it's still underway. Overall, I love the concept and it fits my space and needs ideally. Most of the pieces are very well made and easy to assemble, but the method for securing the reservoir trays was near impossible to get to work and ultimately I was able to attach only a few of the clips. This has, of course, compromised the stability of the trays and they leak when full. It remains to be seen how much of an impact this will have though, as adequate amounts of water may still be retained.

Assembly is easier with two people but the bed is very sturdy once together. Nice design. We own a good size piece of land but our best planting area is the location we used for our pool. This self-watering raised bed is the perfect solution for us. I can't wait to start picking veggies.

This raised bed is fantastic! It holds a good number of plants and was fairly easy to assemble. However, I did have a bit of a problem attaching the water reservoirs. Also, the catalog showed the raised bed with 4 casters. It can take upt to 16 and I would recommend using at least 8.

The raised planter bed is an outstanding product. I'll be buying more of them. We've had a lot of trouble with burrowing animals destroying our beds – and our own dogs trampling the plants. Some quick fence around the raised planters and our vegetables are all protected!

I like this planter a lot, so far. It is too soon to tell about long term. I would not want it without the 16 casters and buyers should be aware that the casters are going to add about [$] to the price of the planter. Some previous comments indicated the planter was difficult to assemble. I did not find this to be true at all. I put it together alone in a little more than an hour using no tools. The trick might be reading the directions.

I read the instructions aloud and my husband assembled it and we had absolutely no problem. Everything fit together perfectly and easily. We also bought the casters, four sets and it was worth the cost. They probably should be included with the product. My only complaint is the water indicators. They never change positions so the only way to tell you have added enough water is when it leaks out the bottom, and there is no way to know when to add water in the first place other than wilted plants. The small square rolling planters that are self-watering have a floating red ball in them which works great! I sure wish this one had the same mechanism.

I liked it so much I ordered 2!!! We got the white as it goes well with our patio decor, and I have mine planted with an assortment of vegetables and herbs all arranged in an ornamental design using the square foot method of gardening. This allowed me to plant individual 1'X1' squares of several salad vegetables and I seperated each variety with dwarf marigolds, I placed a nice sized potted herb in the middle of each planter and in each corner. We have a lovely raised bed garden on our patio that is easily managed and just so pretty to look at. I wholeheartedly encourage you to order the caster sets so that you can easily roll it around. This is an Italian designed product and well worth the $$$, we were just thrilled to see how much growing space we added to our patio. Anyone can find space for these and if veggies aren't your thing, I could see it planted with a bunch of pretty flowers with a piece of statuary in the center to dress it up for a more formal look. Either way, it would make a great gift for someone who doesn't have space or the time to manage a large garden. I haven't been this excited about a new purchase for our yard in years and have invited all the neighbors over to see these planter boxes. The compliments just keep coming!!!

I decided that I wanted my children to have their own garden this summer. This is the first time that we decided to plant a garden except for one tomato plant that we grew last year.

I decided to order this garden because it looked great and easy. When we received it, my husband put it together quit easily and was impressed by how sturdy it actually was. We planted our first garden. Even though it wasn't very large, I was able to plant a tomato plant, an Asian eggplant, and a red pepper plant. I also included three heads of leafy lettuce, carrots, cilantro, parlsey, and marigolds to keep away the bugs. We loved the first one so much that I bought a second a few days later.

I haven't tried the auto watering system yet because we have had so much rain lately.

It looks very neat and clean.

We bought this large, self-watering, raised bed to grow tomatoes on our deck. It is very sturdy and has a large water reservior. We planted our tomato plants two weeks ago and already they have doubled in size. The plants get the perfect amount of water and never dry out.

This wasn't hard to put together at all but it helps to have 2 people just to keep the box formed until all pieces have been snapped in. So far, it's working out well-the vegetables are still young, but it's great to have a bed where you can easily access them without the weeds. In this box we planted 2 lettuce, 2 tomatoes, 2 peppers and a bunch of herbs. It's perfect for that type of gardening

I planted a starter kitchen garden in this container. It's deep enough for carrots! Got the casters as recommended and they work great now that the planter is full. So don't worry if they tend to fall out before you add the soil. It did take a bit of time for assembly, but it wasn't difficult. Easy one person job. Get some ice tea, settle yourself down, read he instructions and you'll be fine.

I consider myself quite handy, but I have been trying to assemble this unit for over 2 hours. It went fine until step 6a - "snap the strips." I have been inside the box, beside the box and even had the box on its' side. I was very excited to purchase the item thinking I could have quite the garden on my patio. Up until now, all my vegetables were in wine barrels, but wine barrels fall apart after several years. I couldn't wait to get this planter, and I was not disappointed! Attractive design, lots of room for a variety of veggies, easy for my husband to assemble (no complaints at all), substantial construction. No negatives, and I don't expect there to be any. I love it!

I had trouble assembling this raised bed garden. The instructions need to have better pictures - I had the sides assembled and couldn't get the water reservoirs in place. Only then did I realize that A) the bed needs to be up off the ground for the reservoirs to fit - they hang down lower than the bottom of the sides. You need the casters, which are are not included. Get them! My husband built a frame from 2x4's to raise the bed up another couple inches. B) The reservoirs have clips to hold them in place, but the clips fit into pre-cut holes which were NOT PRE CUT. This caused me a bit of trouble as I then had to sit inside the box and use an exacto-knife to cut the holes (hot, time consuming, tedious). Once I got the reservoirs clipped in, the rest of it went quickly. However, the reservoirs do not work very well. Although I filled and filled them, the little "stem" of the water gauges never rose to the "maximum fill" line, rendering them useless. I'm not even sure that the cloth straps (that are supposed to wick water to the soil) will work. ARRGH. Having spent SO MUCH on this, I am disappointed that the manufacturer did not supply better instructions, casters, and a ready-to-assemble product. It looks good. Hope it works.

this is a good product for weekend gardners who cannot neccessarily water their gardens daily......and it's small enough to easily fence for the deer.

However, the assembly was difficult in that the plastic pieces that keep the reservoir in place are hard to put together..because the holes they fit into were not properly scored.

Last year was my first attempt at container vegetable gardening, when I put 2 tomato plants in pots. I ended up with a fair number of delicious tomatoes, but wore myself out watering at least twice daily to keep them alive. The self-watering box is a great solution. I ordered my right after the first of the year and started cold-weather veggies in February (leaf lettuce & some herbs), then planted tomatoes and peppers the first of March. We've been harvesting lettuce like mad, the dill and cilantro are huge, I already have loads of green tomatoes and the sweet peppers just started flowering. I only have to fill the resevoirs once a week, currently, although I anticipate an increase in that once we get into the heat.
This is a vast improvement over regular containers for gardeners without land; it fits well on my patio & with the added casters (a must-they really should include them!) allows me to adjust placement as needed.
Assembly was much easier for me than with other reviewers; my husband had offered to help but I was almost done by the time he came out.
All in all, a very good product.

Fits together poorly which makes it extremely difficult to assemble. Some of the instructions are poorly written making it even more problematic. Idea is great in theory but when you make a product this difficult does not encourage future purchase of another one of these planters or other products from this company. Just planted so I can't speak to the yield from the raised bed but the assembly was much easier than I expected from reading some reviews online. It looks great and the capacity is very good. I purchased the casters and they are wonderful for use on a solid surface. I am using it on a driveway and I can move it to capture more light or make way for mower traffic. So far it is ideal!

I just assembled two of these this weekend. Very sturdy, well designed. Easier to put together than other reviews suggest. Definitely order the casters, and need 8 ie two sets of casters for each box. Haven't planted yet but a high quality product. Highly recommend for small space gardening.

All my previous attempts at vegetable gardening failed. But last year I purchased two of these boxes and my kids planted them haphazardly with tomato, cucumber, peppers, squash, basil, eggplant. They were overflowing and we ended up giving vegetables away to about 4 neighboring families weekly.

I only wish they showed the accessories with the items on-line. I would have purchased the trellis. A trellis would have helped keep everything neater and my tomato plants even with their cages may not have flopped over the sides.

And the self watering features, helped keep the plants alive between waterings or rainfall. Great Product. Amazing Results.

My mom thinks the brown color helped my plants take off sooner. I had yield weeks before her traditional in-ground garden.

I bought two of these for my formal, raised bed, veggie/herb garden. These planters look great, and have required very little watering; but, the water level indicators don't work. The only way to be sure you've added enough water is to wait for the water to spill out the bottom.

We bought this as a gift for my in-laws and now I want one for myself. I couldn't get over how large it actually is. We also got them ahd the self watering tomato container last year. The product is very attractive, and if you buy the wheels (which SHOULD be included) you can move it around on your deck to grab as much sun as possible. It would be good to include guidelines as to how many plants should be included. I planted too many and it's getting very jungle-like. With self-watering planters you really get accelerated growth. Also, the water gauge doesn't work well - you just can't tell when the reservoir is filled up.

These planters look good and it's a good idea but I hate them. The water input never fills and there are more misquitoes in our yard than ever before. The misquitoes must have some way of entering the reservoir and laying eggs. I can't walk into the back yard without getting bitten.

The container with your potting soil has grown some of the largest, most beautiful tomato plants. However, they have gotten so big that the supports have not worked, and the plants have blown over several times. Also, I have had to water the plants as the "self-watering" container could not keep up with the daily demands.

This past winter we added a cold frame to it and had tomaotes all winter long. We do half our gardening in these. Add the casters and you can move the planters all over the deck.

I have two of these self-watering planters. They were very easy to assemble, fill with soil and water and plant. The optional casters make them very easy to move around...even when full. I attached a trellis to one and have peas growing in that one along with lettuce,chard,arugula carrots and peppers. In the other planter I have tomatoes,five types of basil,two types of parsley, cilantro, oregano and thyme and broccolli. I only need to fill the resevoirs once every week or so right now depending on rainfall and that will probably be more often as the plants get bigger...but it is much easier than having to water everyday. The only complaint I have about this planter is the water indicators where you fill the resevoir aren't the best....sometimes they work and other times they stick so I need to check the soil by hand to see if it needs to be filled...but that is a minor thing compared to how easy it is to have a small moveable garden that yeilds a lot of whatever you want to grow in them!

The product itself, once it is put together is a very nice product. I had to call the customer service twice about putting it together. The problem wasn't that the directions were wrong but that a strong amount of force was needed to get the pieces of the planter together. I've put together furniture from various places and other kits and have notever had a problem. Finally, my husband had to help me out by forcing the pieces together. I like the finished product but almost thought that I would not be able to use it.

Perfect for our small yard. We have a new construction home and the soil has a lot of rocks and sand/cement. I wanted a raised bed and this is PERFECT!
