Bought the salad bag to give to my mother who recently retired to a condo and gave up her beloved garden. Her balcony is south facing and she has problems keeping plants watered. The bag with tray and wicking fabric simplifies her watering and keeps plants moist and healthy. Within three weeks the lettuce I planted in the bag was twice the size of the lettuce in my garden planted weeks earlier! Perfect for patios and balconies.

I used these bags to grow lettuce. The sides do not hold their shape so the bag does not stay in a rectangle making it difficult to keep an even depth of soil. The bags are handy to grow veggies on the patio. And they keep the soil moist which is why I chose them over a traditional planter box. But I wish they were less flimsy.

We have a huge deck and because of joint problems have decided to move our very large ground garden
into containers on our deck. I planted the lettuce weeks ago and have more than I know what to do with. I bought the tray to go under it which makes it much easier to move. The area where it is now does not get into full sun until afternoon. As the summer gets hotter, my plan is to move (it's on a wrought iron garden cart) the lettuce to shadier parts of the deck when the sun is strongest to try to keep it from bolting for as long as possible.

i was very disappointed in the way this item didn't hold up. it has handles for moving it and when i picked it up by the handle and one of the sides, it ripped to pieces. for an item that is supposed to withstand being outdoors, it sure is flimsy. it seemed to have rotted in just a matter of months.

This was my first grow bag. I have since bought several more; tomato,herb and pepper bags. I love it and the beautiful lettuce that we started eating just 2 weeks after planted. i was very excited, initially, to use this product. the handles made it easy to move and the fabric didn't add weight like a pot would have. HOWEVER, it was very flimsy and mine rotted in less than 6 mos. very, very disappointing. for the cost, i would expect it to last much longer.

For growing leaf lettuce, you cant beat it. I had one last year, and was able to successfully grow 10 heads of romaine (5 on each side). The bag does dry out, like any container does, but on the flip side, it does provide a built in moisture monitor, as the sides of the bag will feel damp to the touch if the water supply is adequate. I am definitely getting another one for this year!

I am using the salad grow bags with their self-watering trays to grow spinach indoors under lights this winter. It works surprisingly well - see the attached photos of my rig, constructed from cheap 4" utility shelving from Home Depot and T5 light fixtures from Gardener's (the lights are switched off for the photo). Two grow bags/trays fit perfectly on one shelf. I used fresh peat/vermiculite/perlite potting mix to avoid insects coming in on used mix. The salad bags do bulge when filled with moist potting mix, so don't expect them to stay perfectly square. However, I have no problem keeping the filled bags on the self-watering trays.

I had given up growing lettuce because the slugs always got to it first and ruined it. With the Salad Grow Bag, I was able to keep the lettuce up on a table and the result was beautiful, lush, slug-free lettuce. The material drains nicely so the soil doesn't get too wet.

I got several salads from my lettuce.The problem I had was the strips that were to use as wicks rotted away,So no water to wick up to the plants.This was ok not something I'm going to get again.But it worked for a while.At least held water longer than my other bags.

I grew lettuce (mesclun mix) and spinach in my grow bag. I used it in conjunction with the self watering tray. I used Gardener's supply container mix and added energy buttons. I had great success. Very encouraging for a new gardener! I purchased another grow bag and watering tray for a friend.

I've been unable to grow mesclun mix for years. Tried the salad grow bag this year and without investing more time than it takes to plant and water I have the largest and most delicious crop of mesclun mix I've ever grown! Even with an extremely hot and dry summer the lettuce is still going strong!

The salad grow bag and tray were not exactly what I had expected. The sides don't stand straight up, but bulge slightly. After everything is soaked it can be shaped a little better. I do like having it on my deck in the shade. I'm not sure how easy it will be to move if necessary. The lettuce mix that I used is growing nicely right now. I'm anxious to see how it is when the summer heats up. I also want to see how it holds up through the growing season.

I have loved the tomato success kits for years, they are awesome. I only have a tiny sunny spot in my yard as most is shade. I thought it would be cool to grow salad and when I saw this product I ordered it right away. I found it was too shallow to really plant the lettuces and the flimsy sides were all floppy and did not really appear solid. After one day I am no longer using this product. The self watering tray they sold with it was also a complete downer. Very unusual for Gardener's Supply.

This already shallow bag distorts when you place soil in it, making it even shallower and resulting in uneven soil depths. That being said the plants I placed in it are thriving. I also have the larger tomato and pepper bags and really like those.

I like the idea of the watering tray, and have used the tray and capillary mat, alone for starter seedlings in peat 1" containers. Now that the seedlings have been planted in raised beds, I've filled the salad grow bag, and the herb grow bag, with soil, etc., and with plants. These would work much better if there were a simple external plastic frame (2-4" high) around the side walls, so that everything stayed in place. I'm going to use a bunge cord, in the interim, but the manufacturer should provide frames for the future. Not very difficult, or expensive--they could come in pieces and snap together.

I have it planted with herbs. I like the self watering tray. The appearance is awful - see above. I don't know how you kept the ones in the catalog looking so neat. We didn't even use all the soil you said we'd need and the sides are bulging and flopping.

I got this to grow strawberries as I don't have much ground to convert to gardening. So far so good - the plants look healthy and are starting to bear fruit. I also use the self-watering tray since the summer temperatures here can move beyond 100 degrees and I'm always looking for ways to make sure the container garden stays watered. I will say the bags do bulge out at the sides when filled with dirt, and these are not particularly deep so that would limit what can be planted in them. Customer service folks were VERY helpful in walking me through how to use the watering tray (not self-evident!) and in making sure I was ordering what I needed.

overall - very pleased with quality, and plants (salad greens) are growing well. I'm not sure how to do it, but the sides need to be stabilized - when it's filled - they 'bow-out'. And although the price for the bag is great, needing to purchase an expensive tray to sit it in/on makes it pricy. And the tray is the only way to keep it from getting things wet - it drains great - no soggy soil.

I believe the combination of the grow bag and the gardener's supply growing mix -- plus perfect cool weather -- have resulted in one of my best lettuce crops. So useful for mesclun and other leaf lettuces. I kept reseeding a portion every 3 weeks or so, and got rotating crops all Jan through now (April). I keep it on the self-watering tray along with my 2' grow light on the clothes dryer. Very functional design, and nearly-instant gratification!

I have several of these and they are great for many different plants. Fill with soil and you don't have to weed. Since I am one of the "golden" generation, I cannot stoop or bend as well as years past. These containers allow me to grow everything I want without worrying about the pain!

I already have a 4' growlight. I wanted lettuce in the winter, and I have no windows for something like this. 2 of these, along with the self-watering trays, fit nicely under the lights. I water with 3 liters of water for each tray about twice a week, perhaps less often. Seems to be working, although I've only had this setup for 2 weeks. The lettuce is growing nicely. A packet of cut-and-come-again seeds. I need to move the seedlings from the sides, as they don't get enough of the light. Next time I will plant about 2 inches away from each side. I will probably need to tweak my system more as time passes. I'd like to save the growing mix from year to year, adding compost, or compost tea. I used one bag of growing mix per tray, seems to be plenty
