We got two shitake kits. One produced 3 delicious mushrooms and is currently in the "rest" stage for two weeks. The other one has produced nothing but I am still faithfully misting. It's about 8 days behind the other one.I am so disappointed. Over $70. was spent for 3 mushrooms!

    Comments about Shiitake Mushroom Kit:

I believed that the kit would continue to grow mushrooms but in fact it grew only three and then died out. I am tempted to take the growing medium out of the plastic container and spread it out in a wooden box with more surface area. The plastic bag only allows a limited space for the mushrooms to come up. I thought the plastic bag that was go over the other plastic, to presumable hold in the moisture was flimsy and kept falling over.

    Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Comments about Shiitake Mushroom Kit:

Before you buy this, please be aware that in order for it to grow successfully, you must be able to keep it between 60-80 degrees F and in a spot that receives some natural light. (I do not remember the description specifying this and it is essential to know this before ordering.) I live in NYC with no AC and since we've had several heatwaves in July, my patch grew copious amounts of mold but no fungi. It also took a really long time to arrive--several weeks. Had it arrived a little more quickly I think the temperature would have been more amenable for growing it. I want to try again once the temps are cooler, though I might order the next patch from a different site (one that comes directly from the dealer).

    Comments about Shiitake Mushroom Kit:

Clearly, other people here managed to get mushrooms from their kit, but even though I followed the instructions, it didn't work for me. After many weeks, I had a block of, well, slime, with little resemblance to mushrooms. It's a neat idea and would make a great gift. I wish it had worked.

    Comments about Shiitake Mushroom Kit:

Purchased as a gift for my son's family, this mushroom kit produced a healthy crop within the first 3 weeks. My 6-year-old grand-daughter has lots of questions about how the mushrooms grow, what the growing medium is, how this kit provides a different growing environment from mushrooms growing in the wild. Of course, using the first harvest on pizza was not only tasty, it helped the children learn about uses of this interesting food crop.

    Comments about Shiitake Mushroom Kit:

I had a good 1st crop(4 c. dried/sliced) despite mostly growing on one side. I think that side got too much light. I did have a difficult time finding a handy location (needs misting 3-4X/d)that had indirect light and was not in my way! We made a wild rice, shitake dish last night and they were amzzing--none of the "dusty" flavor of store-bought ones.

The only thing I was change is that the include instructions on how to extend the harvest beyond the first month or two.

    Comments about Shiitake Mushroom Kit:

This is a fun project. I really enjoyed growing the mushrooms. When I first received it, I was confused so I called the toll free number on the materials that came with the kit. The customer service people were great.

    Lessons Learned:
    - You do need to read the directions, which are very clear.
    - I opted to refrigerate it for a few days, which I think helped.
    - I would recommend that when you give the log it's initial 24 hour soaking that you put it in a bucket instead of soaking it in the bag because my bag leaked. Once you drain the log, cover it with the plastic "humidity bag" and remember to mist it daily.
    - If you are going to use tap water, boil and cool enough up front to have your jar of "misting water" prepared.
    - When you are reaching the end of the first round of mushrooms, uncover the mushroom patch and let it dry. I waited too long, which is why I ended up with some mildew. I removed the mildew, put it in the shade outside to dry for 12 hours, and was back on schedule.

All in all, this was great. I can't wait to decide on my next kit!

    Comments about Shiitake Mushroom Kit:

This project was great, the mushrooms were tasty as expected. We also grew many different cuttings until it stopped producing.
The only issue that I had with the mushroom kits was the extreme mess. I had the kit placed on my kitchen counter, since the instructions said to water as often as they did, the water in the plastic bag built up. The only way to insure that the mushrooms would grow and not rot was to drain off the excess water. The way I achieved this was to snip the plastic bag. If you do this you will get a lot of mushrooms, but will also get a lot of very dirty water everywhere. So I suggest a deep tray and to empty it every day. Otherwise you will have a tremendous mess.
