Comments about Downspout Diverter:

tougher than expected to fine tune. you need to use level to precisely place the diverter at teh exact right height. grommets leaked .
diverter hole was to close to floor preventing good seal for grommet. i cut a slice across a little bit of inside seat of grommet so it could clear floor of diverter box. on outside of diverter boxm make a mark or tape line where top of overflow tube is. This line should correspond to the water level you want in your barrel . Make diverter hose hole and barrel fill holes equal distances below this line .Like the distance of overflow down to hose hole

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Once it's installed, it works great- just as described. Getting it installed was a pain in the butt. Probably would have been a lot easier if we had the proper tools to cut the downspout and there wasn't a gigantic yew bush blocking the downspout and making access dificult. I just wish it came in white. I have never seen a dark green gutter in my entire life, so I have no idea why it's green. And having the hole on both sides as many other people mentioned would be a plus. In my location it was fine the way it is, but if we had wanted to put the barrell on the other side it would have been a problem. All in all I am very pleased.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Once installed the diverter works fine. Good for watering plants (no faucet nearby). However, (1) can only direct barrel hose to the right... can you make diverter with hole (with rubber plug) on left side?; (2) small downspot pipe looks awkward going into large diverter opening... do you offer adapter?

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

It works perfectly well but I did have to have my son install it since it did need some drilling in the downspout, etc. to attach it to the rain barrel

ON of the things I cannot find anywhere is what is the winter care of this device and the rain barrel... since I live on Cape Cod and we do get freezes here. How do I shut it off if it is disconnected to rain barrel?

So Far, So Good

Cons:
Could be more versatile
Best Uses:
Household Plants, Outdoor Garden
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Under cons, I stated possible greater versatility. This could be simply and easily achieved, if there was a hole on each side of the diverter for the attachment of the connecting hose to the barrel. The side not being used could be plugged with a solid rubber plug similar to the rubber grommet used for the hose side. This way the barrel could sit on either side of the downspout, or even have barrels on both sides. Periodically check the connecting hose, and if it is not draining well, a length of Romex wire or other flexible wire can be used to clean shingle grit and organic debris from the hose. The diverter collection box will likely need to be cleaned occasionally. Overall, one of the best new devices I have purchased lately.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Wish that I had installed the diverter a bit higher on the downspout. It works fine for the current rain barrel but I'd like to add a second rain barrel and it would need to sit lower than the first rain barrel. The first rain barrel and diverter are already sitting on the ground level. Just a tip in case some one wants to install two rain barrels.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I bought this to replace the British diverter I bought on a trip to the UK which worked well but was difficult to install on American pipes and was unable to stand up to a Pennsylvanian winter. The one from GS is made of metal and able to stand up to the winters here. That is where the advantages stop. The top is open which allows mosquitoes to enter. To counter this problem there is a small drain hole on the bottom plate of the diverter. Net result is that during light rain water does not enter fast enough to fill the barrel but instead drains to the ground. With a heavy rainfall water gushes over the open top and erodes around the down pipe.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

We got the diverter installed. Seemed to work with 99% of the water (1% dripped at the bottom of diverter outside of the drain pipe . Then a big rain storm with 3.3 in. of water and 70 mph wind washed out the base on which the rain barrel stood - tipping barrel over on its side. Didn't hurt the diverter or hose, but we have to redo the whole set-up to see how well it really does work.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The diverter adds a finishing touch to hooking up to a rain barrel while also allowing rain water to flow through the downspout when the barrel is full. I plan to paint the diverter to match the downspout, then it will be less noticeable. It took over an hour to install the diverter due to measuring, cutting, and assembling.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

We wanted the diverter so that when our rain barrel is full, the additional water from the gutter will continue to flow away from the house instead of dumping at the foundation. The diverter works very well in filling the rain barrel, but we are still working out the proper height for it to effectively "divert" the water when the barrel is full. Overall we are pleased with the product, even though it has been trickier to install than would seem.

This was a god-send for my husband and I. I had to convince him to hook up my rain barrel, but he was balking at the idea thinking he'd have a major headache when it came to the downspout part.
After looking at the diagram on-line he relented to trying it "my way" with this handy diverter. After discovering the attachment holes were on the wrong side for us he drilled two new ones on the opposite side and it worked wonderfully.
I was happy to discover my barrel was full after one hard storm! YAY!

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Works as described. Read comments about suggested modifications and I agree that they are needed to make this product efficient. It will work as is, but by using a larger hose and using a plug with a smaller hole for the auto drain, it works much better. I was lucky to need the hose on the side with the existing hole, otherwise this would have been another problem. I enlarged the hole for a 1" hose, found correct size grommets, found plug for drain hole and put a much smaller hole in it. I also painted unit to match house, as I would not have liked its green color.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

This diverter does exactly what it is supposed to do. Unfortunately, it is designed for your rain barrel to only be installed on one side of the downspout. Since I needed the rain barrel on the other side of the downspout, I had to install the diverter backwards. Since the downspout is hidden by a large shrub, this didn't bother me. However, it seems like the manufacturer should make punch out holes on both sides of the diverter so that you can decide where to install your rain barrel. With that said, I'm still very happy with the diverter.

A hands off way to fill your rail barrel

Cons:
Cutting required
Best Uses:
Container gardening, Household Plants, Outdoor Garden
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

We do container gardening on our deck. Running a hose or carrying water jugs just doesn't work very well. I had wanted a rain barrel for sometime but all of the downspout diverters I had seen required a lever to be moved to divert water and to be switched back to prevent overflow. When I saw this one, I felt the time was right to get my barrel.
Glad I did. Cutting the downspout may intimidate some, although not hard to do at all. Everything went together well. Instructions were clear. I did not attach the box to the wall with screws per the instructions but used silicone instead. Much easier and solid as a rock. Here is the great part......Once it is in place, it is truely hands off. It fills the barrel to a certain level and then goes back to a regular downspout on its own. NO MOVING PARTS EITHER. The finish looks very well applied and I would guess it will look good for a long time.
If you have a rain barrel, you need this diverter.

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Although you have to really figure out how to install in your particular location pretty much from scratch, once the diverter is installed, it is very efficient. However, if you want to catch every single drop of rain in your rain barrel, you should go with the options where the downspout itself is diverted into the top of the rain barrel.
In my case, I don't need to catch every drop. In a very light rain, the water flows through the mosquito proof hole down into the downspout. In a moderate rain, nearly all of the water is diverted to the rain barrel. When there is a really heavy downpour, a lot is diverted into the rain barrel, but the rest is sent down the downspout as it would be if there was no diverter. This works for me, as my downspouts have long been channeled to reduce erosion and to water my lawn anyway. I don't have to worry about my rain barrel overflowing as you do when the downspout is diverted into the top.
All in all, this is a great product. It could be a little more flexible with either a left or right hand mounting, but this diverter looks so much better than the alternative and provides more control of the rainwater flow, that I think it is well worth the stress of the installation and the price.

By JimVerified Purchaser from Waldport, OR on 6/23/2010
Pros:
Conserves Water, Weather Resistant
Best Uses:
Outdoor Garden, Watering the Lawn
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

This is a very clever use of an old idea, with some great features, such as an "automatic" shut-off / diversion based on simple, basic, hydraulic principles - nothing to fail or go wrong!

In a climate like ours (Coastal Oregon) where we get LOTS of rain, (most of which normally goes down the drain) and only a couple of comparatively dry months to grow, this device and the rain barrels makes a lot of sense. I bought one diverter and one 50 gal. flat-back barrel for each of my four down-spouts, giving me 200 gals. of water I don't have to pay for. In addition, it provides potential emergency water supplies in case of disaster.

The flat-back barrels I chose are attractive and fit well against my hose, actually making them almost a decorative accessory

If they work as well as they seem to, I may get some more barrels and split the diverter hoses to give me 100 gals. per corner!

Cons:
Difficult To Use, Inefficient, Water Goes Everywhere
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Directions are different to the website diagram. Most of the water ends up flowing straight down the downspout rather than into the diversion chamber. Water cannot build up in the diversion chamber to enter the pipe to the rainbarrel because of a hole in the bottom (to prevent standing water) which drains faster than water can flow in (unless there is a deluge). The gasket around the rainbarrel hose also leaks.

It was the only diverter I found that automatically diverted the water down the down spout once the barrel was full. The only thing I didn't like was the connecting fill tube is too small. In a good rain, too much water goes down the down spout and not into the rain barrel. I'm planning on adding a second connecting tube to take advantage of all my rain.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The down spout diverter was a little tricky to install, and I had to call the hubby in for help - but once it was secure HOLY COW!! The first night of rain filled the rain barrel to the brim.
I will be connecting a lead hose, splitters & a series of drip hose from the barrel to the garden next. I am very excited about the amount of money I will save on the water bill this year! This thing will pay for itself in no time flat!

Pros:
Conserves Water
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Installed easily, but despite measuring carefully, had to adjust the device upwards, entailing cutting a little more downspout and leaving a gap in the downspout below.
Pushing the transfer hose into the rainbarrel about a foot rather than just leaving it at the lip of the grommet promotes a little siphoning force, and helps the flow considerably. I had to dam up the drill-hole in the bottom as others have mentioned...it's too big. Otherwise works very well....filled two 55 gal drums with the first rain with no trouble.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

If you have a steep pitch to your roof and/or you are concerned about how to handle excess water,as the rain barrel fills, this is the product for you. It allows you to capture a great amount of rain is a short amount of time and the excess is automatically diverted back down the spout. What a great joy and surprise it was when we had our first slow rain that lasted about 15 minutes to find the 55 gallon barrel 3/4 of the Way Full!! I have already had the pleasure of using the captured rain to water plants and early vegetables. We have yet to take the water hose out of storage.

I connected the converter easily, but had to buy screening for the top to keep out mosquitos and insects. I put waterproof caulk in the weephole, then poked a small hole in it with a toothpick. Works great. Filled 60 gallon barrel with first rain, even tho rain was not hard one. Just wish my barrel put more water pressure into my water hose. All I can do is fill my watering cans and carry to garden and flower pots.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

This diverter works well. It eliminates the overflow problem with rain barrels, and that helps control mosquitoes. This purchase replaces the first one that lasted a few years before rusting out. I wish it were more durable. If you get leaves in your gutters, don't forget to check for debris that may collect in the downspout above the diverter.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Our local landscape company likes oo\urs so much, they want to offer them to their clients! No more bulky split downspouts.
My only (strong!)sugestion would be to put an additional hole on the left side with a blank off cap so the overflow tube can be used on either side. My barrel is on the left side and we had to run the tube back around from the right side hole which shortens the distance the barrel can be from the actual spout. We have 2 and will order them again as we add more rain barrels to our property!

Cons:
Inefficient, Limited Use
Best Uses:
Rainbarrels
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Made of heavy metal, so it weights a lot. Must be sure to secure your downspout to house, from below diverter, more than the downspouts existing strap. No way to attach diverter to house.
Concept of diverter is good, however the hole in side to redirect the water is only half inch, which limits the flow of water to a rain barrel. Thus an overflow is created in the downspout; at the diverter. I think this was made for a specific kind of rain barrel, because of the short peice of hose that was included in kit.

We bought 6 of these and asked our gutter company to install them while putting up our new gutters. They were impressed with this device and want to offer this service to future customers. I have two wishes that would improve this product. 1. Have it is other color choices....it sticks out as the brightest object on the front of our house...we would have preferred a subtle color such as grey or tan. 2. When we choose to not have the green hose hitched up to the diverter, rain water pours out of the side small opening where the hose belongs. I would like a rubber plug sort of device to stop-it-up when not in use.

Use the diverters to demo. water conservation to healing garden students at Community College...start out by sayng use diverters to fill the Season with rainwater from multiple rainbarrels and use them. If save water all season, would have rain barrels side by side stretching outstate 100 miles....pretty good for a prairie state.Keeps potable water out of storm system and recyled instead of depleting the precious Ogallala Aquafir....very healing and satisfying as well as responsible stewardship.

Realized when I got my diverter that I would have to move my rainbarrel because it was on the wrong side of the gutter.
It was easy enough to install and in theory would work well but is unable to deal with lots of rain(1/2 inch in 30 minutes)at one time. The water came out of the top of the diverter like a water spout.
I will probably take it off my gutter when I find something else that may work handle lots of water at one time better.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

While diverters delivered the rain water to the barrels, in the heaviest rainfall the diverter overflowed. The center spout apparently could not handle the volume of water being produced. This could become an issue for some folks if the soils around the house are not effectively graded to carry this water away. Also, the instruction sheet does not say anything about whether you can leave the diverter in place during the winter. If it is to be removed, do you sell a flexible fitting that could be inserted in the opening created when placing the diverter.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

We recently purchased three (3) of these, and so far have installed and started using the first one. The instructions are a little confusing, but make sense after reading them over and looking at the diagrams several times. Do not make any cuts in your downspouts until you have read these several times and feel comfortable that you understand them. As mentioned in previous reviews, the opening in the overflow tube is much too big. My solution was to take a container from an individual serving coffee brewer (the small pod which you place in the coffee machine and dispose of after brewing your fresh cup of coffee). I removed the foil top from the pod, drilled a 1/4" hole in the bottom, and placed it in the tube of the downspout diverter. It fits perfectly on the rim of the tube and prevents most of the water from escaping further down the downspout rather than being diverted into the rain barrel. I then continued to install the diverter according to the directions. Nearly all the water coming down the spout diverts into the barrel, and doesn't overflow as the barrel fills. The sound of the water running into the barrel is also very enjoyable if you happen to be near the barrel as the rainwater is being diverted into it.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

My gutters run underground to a pop-up in the lawn, so this diverter worked well allowing the overflow to be moved far from the foundation. Be sure to install the diverter at 1/2-1" above the rainbarrel inlet to ensure the maximum amount of water is sent to the barrel. It would be nice to see this offered in other colors since my gutters are white and my barrels are black. Very sturdy and easy to install.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The product worked well and installed easily, as expected. I read several reviews and I made the modifications that others had recommended. They were:

1. I added a diverter cap to the inner pipe using a modified 2" PVC pipe cap. This addition diverts all the water to the hose but still allows it to overflow to the gutter.

2. I placed a small 1/4" grommet in the weep hole and drilled a tiny hole in the middle. This still permits the weeping, but slows it down.

This might work with GS' English rain barrel, but it doesn't work with with my Urn or 2 60 gallon flat backed barrels. In a gentle rain, the water just ran out the drainage hole in the bottom; in a heavy Ohio rain the water is SPLASHING UP out of the TOP!
I have ordered an enclosed diverter from another company and now have an expensive mistake to send back to GS -- after I eat the shipping costs, price of a masonry bit, and buy a new downspout to replace the one that now has a chunk cut out of it to install this diverter.

I just bought the a square (presidents choice) barrel and it has a screened opening on the top..but it has outlets on either side that I could use for this diverter..assuming it works with my existing barrel?

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Two design improvements:
1. Cap on internal tube to ensure water is preferentially diverted.
2. Diverter tube hose should come off of bottom instead of side. This would ensure drainage of all water from diverter without need for second hole in bottom and would also look nicer as diverter tube could be routed next to downspout.
(incidentally a neutral color (beige would probably be more universal than forest green for downspouts)

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I ordered the diverter along with the english rain barrel. The diverter was shipped separately, so I had to wait a few days. It arrived just in time to install before a shower. I was able to watch it during the storm and it worked great. I was afraid most of the water would go down the spout, but the barrel filled nicely. The design is riculously simple and the diverter is very solidly constructed. The connector hose is long enough for flexible positioning. My only snag was my downspout is not attached to a wall, so I had to use cable ties to secure the setup to the carport support.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The diverter works perfect with my English Water Barrel. It only took a few minutes to install. This is a necessary item to have in cold weather areas, since you need to empty and store your rain barrels in the winters so that the water inside them do not freeze and damage the barrels. With the diverter, you can easily take the barrel away in the winters and then just plug the hole that feeds to your water barrel.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I use this to divert rain water from our downspout into an English rain barrel. Installation was pretty straight forward and only took about 30 minutes. Make sure you double check all of your measurements and before cutting anything. It would have been nice if the installation kit included outdoor mounting screws, but no big deal. Once installed the product works excellent. In just one night of moderate rain, it filled half of my english rain barrel. I then used that to water all of our flower beds and some patches of lawn where new seed has been laid. Definitely recommended product

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

As many others have stated, there are a number of drawbacks to the design of the diverter; the primary being as follows: Water exit port is only on the right side (i.e. facing diverter) so it limits where the rainbarrel(s) can be located; the color of it is forrest green, which stands out on the gutter; and the weep hole (that allows water to drain from the diverter to prevent mosquito breeding) is too large which prevents water from being diverted to the barrel during low-flows.

I read one gentlemen's post here about how he modified the diverter to divert more water to the barrel which included making a "hat" out of tape to cover the top pipe and how he also decreased the size of the weep hole by using tape also. These ideas were very helpful. However, figuring that tape wouldn't last long to make the "hat" to cover the top exit pipe, I fashioned mine out of a plastic funnel. What I did was take a small plastic funnel (that came in a package of 3). The smallest one in the package was the perfect size for my application. I took the funnel and cut the tip off it and then drilled several holes all around the funnel. I then inverted the funnel and placed it up inside the top portion of the cut downspout. The funnel had a built in tab with a hole already in it which I bent over on the outside of the downspout and through which I placed a sheet metal screw to hold the funnel in place. This creates a sort of umbrella which diverts more water to the sides of the exit pipe in the top of the diverter and to the pipe leading to the barrel. I used a piece of duct tape over the weep hole and used an awl to make a smaller diameter hole in the tape. I am waiting for the next light rain to see if my design works.

I realize that the diverter is meant to be used with different size gutters however, the designers should have come up with some type of screen cover so that the weep hole could be elimated all together. It would seem to me that more water would be conserved if it were designed that way.

I recently put this diverter on my gutter and attached it to my two homemade rain barrels. It works great except it is a little above level and it only works with heavier rain. Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I love this product! It's relatively easy to install; once it's hooked up, you can forget it. The only thing I would do to improve it would be to put a second outlet on the left side to provide more flexibility in barrel placement.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The concept is good, but needs work. I had problems last year with mosquito hole. It drains more water on the ground than goes into the barrel. I had to plug the mosquito hole with a stick and periodically check it.

I've discovered that over-winter the water has shot out the side hole on the diverter and washed dirt away from my foundation. It needs to come equipped with a plug for when you are not using it.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I got two of these for my rainbarrels and they work very well. However, the outlet is only on one side, they should make them for each side as well as the holes to attach them. It would also be nice to have threaded outlets so you could just attach a garden hose as some rain barrels come with these sort of attachments. We recently had just over an inch of rain and it filled both my barrels. However, the cut off mechanism didn't work so I had to attach an overflow hose to the barrels. We are thinking of getting another rain barrel and another diverter for the front of the house.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I think there should be some way that it could be designed so the outlet hose can be attached to either side of the diverter. The hole outlet being only on the right side as one faces the diverter is limiting.
I do like the fact all water is drained from the diverter by the small hole at the bottom. Helps to prevent insects from having a medium to grow in.

By Ash of the Rain Barrel from Pleasant Hill, CA on 2/9/2009
Cons:

Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I installed my first diverter just before a rain (1/4 inch over several hours) and was excited to see the results. I was seriously disappointed. Basically the flow rate into the down spout was to low for any water to fill the diverter and be sent to the barrel. Mean time my other barrels are over flowing. The reason for this problem? There is a small hole to allow excess water to drain out of the diverter after the rain has stopped. The problem is that this hole to too large.

Hey designers go back and make the hole 1/4 of the diameter.

Best Uses:
Outdoor Garden
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I had high expectations for this product, so perhaps, I am not the best reviewer. This diverter is attached to a downspout with high volume during rain, so that may be part of the problem. It is hooked up to an english rain barrel. The problems are that the hose to the barrel keeps getting dislodged, even with the plastic ring, and that more rain gets diverted than enters the barrel. In low rains, our barrel does not fill, like it did before the diverter.

The drainage hole on the bottom (not hose end) is too big.. I made mine smaller with tape. The cylinder inside the box needs a "hat" to divert more water into the hose - did this with tape also. apart from that its great!.

I like this product. It does what it says it'll do. You may need tin snipers to cut through your downspout, but I was still able to do that myself (didn't have to have my husband do it. We haven't had it overflow once. Good product.

I do wish it had a left side OR right side hole for the hose. It only has right side hole but I wanted my barrel to sit on the left of the downspout. I turned the unit around and itsill works great, but you can see the drill holes now.

I don't think rainbarrels would be very effective without this diverter, unless you just cut off your downspout entirely and had it flow into the barrel--but then what do you do when your barrel is full??? The diverter lets the water flow back into your original spout and off it goes...

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Installation was slightly cumbersome given that downspout had to be cut twice. Since diverter has the outlet to the rain barrel available only on one side (notice the product illustration), placement of rain barrel is somewhat limited. Should be careful to have arangement of barrel (especially height), diverter and location next to house well planned before starting to cut. Otherwise, first couple of rainfalls seemed to work well to fill the barrel. Still waiting to see its performance during an extremely heavy rainfall. Also still deciding whether potential winter ice build up might require removing it for the cold season and re-attaching it in the spring.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I suspected the small hose would not be effective in transferring water from the downspout to the barrel. The water diverted was approx.the same as a barrel that had the downspout directly into the barrel. I did put an adapter of '3/4" mpt to male hose' into the outlet hole and an adapter of '3/4" mpt to fm-hose' in the barrel and made short sections of hose to connect the pair. A fm-hose cap is available to close off the diverter during winter.

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

So far so good. It's doing a good job of filling the rain barrels. I haven't noticed any leaks or other problems. I wish that the product design offered a hole on either the right or the left rather than just on the right side. It would be nice to be able to choose which direction the hose needs to go without having to either turn the diverter around backwards or try to bend the hose. It would also be nice if this product was offered in white. I had a hard time cutting the downspout straight, so it's a less-than-pretty install ... but since we're using it on a backyard downspout behind a fence it's not such a big deal that it doesn't look beautiful. At least it's functional! I'd buy another of these for another downspout and try harder to cut the downspout more cleanly.

Pros:
Conserves Water
Cons:
No shut off for year end
Best Uses:
Outdoor Garden
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

A clever little device that could be greatly improved with a couple small tweaks.
1) I would like a debris screen so that debris never gets into my water barrel. A small diverter is easier to clean out than a large barrel.
2) Small hinged door on front for the afore mentioned cleaning. A verticle sliding door could work also. Just keep the bottom of the door a few inches above the hose outlet.
3) An "end of season shut-off". Sure you can just pull out the hose, but then any late season storm water will be pouring out the side where the hose was located. I would rather just have a blocking gate to slide over the hose inlet and keep everything in place.

I think a couple of these could even be cleverly combined. Still though, a decent idea.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The product is a good idea but it has limitations when it comes to hooking it in to the downspout. It is one sided, you can't eaasliy hook it on any but one side of a downspout due to the construction. I ran into a problem in that the place I wanted to hook it up, was not doable because of the costruction

Pros:
Compact, Conserves Water, Weather Resistant
Cons:
Small connecting hose, Small overflow pipe
Best Uses:
Outdoor Garden
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

This device appears to be a good item for diverting flow. However, I am concerned about the small size of the connecting hose, the small size of the overflow pipe, and the possibility of freeze up during the winter months.

I am going to watch this over the winter months and into next spring to see how it performs. If it does well I will install the other 2 I purchased. If not, I will hopefully be able to return the other two. In either case, if I remember, I will write another review to update all.

At this time I am reserving a comment about recommending it until it is time tested.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

This product is great. I am single and own my own home and need to save money where ever I can and this product helps me do that. All I did was cut one of the downspouts that came down my garage in a spot as high as my rain barrel. Put it in the middle of the two pieces of downspout and ran the hose to my barrel. I had water for my garden the first time it rained. So it helps me grow my own vegetables and that saves me money also. Beside the savings on my water bill. Great Product Thinking about getting another one.

Pros:

Cons:

Describe Yourself:
Getting Started

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

I have larger downspouts and have been unable to find any one who can definitively tell me that I can crimp the larger downspout into a smaller downspout that would fit the diverter, without potential disaster. I have a shared backyard, a 6-flat, and my neighbors would be displeased if I flooded the backyard. Please note the dimensions of your downspout before buying this product.
PS - I haven't given up hope
PPS - my favorable rating is based on a friends recommendation, the apparent solid construction of this piece, and the apperently clear instructions.

I have 3 now, 1 for each rain barrel. Started with 1 because I thought them a bit expensive. Then started checking other sights, prices and how they were installed or worked. I found you get what you pay for so I bought 2 more and an extra one for my neighbor as she liked my setup so well. Very easy to install and efficiently fills barrel with easy overflow control when barrel is full or a heavy rain occurs. I highly recommend this product.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

good concept but the rain barrel did not fill up as fast as when I used a flexible diverter. Some of the water dripped out of the mosquito prevention holes and some went directly down the overflow pipe. I ended up not using this and went back to the flexible diverter. Because of drilling a hole in the rainbarrel, a few gallons of capacity are lost because when the water reaches the hole it flows back into the downspout. I paid for a 75 gallon rain barrel so I would like to have 75 gallons of rain water.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

My husband and I constructed two rain barrels last summer from recycled food grade barrels. We weren't sure how to best connect them to the downspouts.
The Downspout Diverter worked perfectly! In the winter, we simply looped the hose into the top of the diverter, and the water went through the downspout. Our barrels are full with one good rain, and I haven't had to use tap water on my garden at all this year.

Attached to rain barrels from downspout. Directions call for level attachment to barrel, but if we do this the hose backs up with very small debris. If the hose is raised 1/2 an inch to 1 inch at the gutter end, this device works very nicely and doesn't back up.

By SamVerified Purchaser from Miwaukee, WI on 7/11/2008
Pros:
Easy Installation, Requires minimal tools
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

This diverter makes it simple to install a rain barrel without having to completely disconnect the downspout. It was very easy to connect it to the rain barrel. You will need a hacksaw or something similar to cut the downspout. A great item for city dwellers who have downspouts that discharge underground. With the diverter in place you do not need to worry about controlling runoff in the Winter when the rain barrel is disconnected. It does occasionally clog with leaves that wash down from the gutters, but it is a simple matter to clean them out.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The product is the best on the market. It is a good product that works well and is the most convienient. There are only a couple modification I would make to it. Would be nice if it came in white to match the gutters. If they invented a way to easily attach it to the gutter without having screw into concrete or the house that would be better and finally there needs to be someway to filter shingle ganuals from getting stuck in the wholes once in a while. Otherwise it a product this once installed you leave it alone and it works great.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

The instructions were o.k. if your rain barrel is located to the right of the spouting. My downspout is to the left. I had to drill a new hole in the diverter and plug the factory drilled hole.( preventing hose kink) A clip should be added to retain the spigot hose for a better hold. I added a hook and chain. The screen on the top should have swing away clips (3) to hold screen in place in case of high winds. I added plastic clips that do the job.

Comments about Downspout Diverter:

Diverter needs to have a hole on both sides so that barrels can be placed on either side. I had to put a hole on the left side so that I could use with my setup. Mounting holes in back side allow the diverter to leak down the side of the house even in moderate rain. During heavy down pours the water splashes over the top and required rocks underneath to avoid erosion. It filled two 40 gallon barrels after about 3 inches of rain.
