Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I ordered two of these kits and was disappointed. First of all, I had far fewer tomatoes from these plants than the very same varieties in my garden. Secondly, the support for the tomatoes was very flimsy and difficult to put together. All it took was one deer one time to totally dismantle the support from one container. I will use it again next year, but probably not for tomatoes.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I purchased 2 tomato success kits this year, for the first time, thinking that they'd help me produce beautiful, disease-free, plentiful tomatoes. I have 2 Sweet 100 plants in one planter and 2 Beefsteak plants in the other. Although we kept the water reservoirs full most of the time, they dried out a couple of times. It's hard to keep tabs on the water level, and it's difficult to see exactly how much water is in there. All of the plants suffered from blight. The Sweet 100 plants lasted long enough for us to enjoy a small amount of tomatoes; the Beefsteaks are still ripening on the vine, and we're hoping to enjoy some of them before the plants die completely. We were MOST disappointed with the wire cage and extension. They did not adequately support heavy tomato vines, especially in heavy winds. We have quite a bit of heavy wind here in Minnesota in the summer, and we were CONSTANTLY having to reattach the wire extensions. This is NOT a one-person job once the vines have gotten taller and heavier! The plastic corner pieces are flimsy, and the extensions kept falling over. As a matter of fact, a couple of my plastic corner pieces have snapped in two because we've had to reattach them so many times. For next year, we will probably reinforce the flimsy plastic corner pieces with either twist ties or floral wire. We will also turn the planters lengthwise into the prevailing wind instead of width-wise, as they fell over numerous times.

still have the older model, grows great tomatoes every yr. only thing didn't really like was the hole on the side of the container to fill with water. can't wait to use the newer one, the filler tube on top looks like a great and eaiser way to keep water level at a glance.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I followed all intructions very carefully for planting, watering, and fertilizing and only used the soil and fertilizer that were shipped with the kit. I planted one tomato plant in the container and it grew beautifully until the fruit started to ripen. Then, I noticed that some fruit had blossom end rot, a problem that I had hoped to solve by using the kit, and when I started picking the tomatoes to eat, all of the tomatoes had hard cores and no flavor. Gradually, the vine started turning yellowish. I also do not understand the purpose of the self watering container as the grown plant used all of the water every day so I might as well have watered it directly rather than refilling the container daily. I do like the kit itself and will try growing peas in it for the winter. Hope I have better luck.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

My first Tomato success kit helped produce great tomatoes, but wire cage and extension did not adequately support heavy tomato vines, especially in a fairly heavy wind. For my second success kit, I reinforced the flimsy plastic corner pieces by wrapping each joint with a couple of turns of florist wire (steel with green vinyl covering. Hope it will be more durable.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This kit is amazing. The tomatoes I put in it grew three times as fast as the ones I put in the ground and are now loaded with fruit. All I've had to do is water it daily. The plants are covered with fruit, and we started getting ripe tomatoes in late July. People are astounded when they see how absolutely huge ane healthy the plants are. However, I don't think it really fits two tomato plants. We planted a Supersonic and a Roma and the Roma couldn't compete. We are getting some tomatoes from it, but not as many as the Supersonic. Also, I bought the optional casters, which allow us to roll the planter around the deck so it gets 9-10 hours of sun a day. The wheels looked flimsy to me, and I wondered how well they'd work on a bumpy deck, but they work like a charm. I'm buying two more of these things next year.

My plants have really grown fast, are full and bushy and look very healthy. I look forward to using the system again next year!

I am not happy at all with my kits, the soil has caused the plants to be pale and sickly. There is no way to tell when the water is getting low so the plants get dryed out. Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Once we got the kits assembled and the tomatoes planted, everything went well. My tomato plants have done well and grown huge. However, I have lost a couple dozen tomatoes to blossom end rot. The plants have stayed well watered and I used the soil and fertilizer that came with the kit, so I'm baffled and frustrated. I sprayed with the blossom end rot spray twice now, a week apart, and I'm still having problems. Oddly, my other tomato plants in a square foot garden and in cheap pots have done just as well and have not had blossom end rot!! I'm not giving up on these pots yet, but I probably won't buy more.

One more caveat, the reservoirs need to be filled OFTEN. As in DAILY, now that the weather has heated up here in western Oregon. I can't recommend these, because they are rather expensive and don't seem to save much time or sustain healthier plants than cheap plastic pots.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I would be careful if you decide to use this container for tomatoes. The instructions do not specifically say but lead you to believe that you can put multiple plants in the one container - I found that you CANNOT. I have two tomato plants in one container and they are struggling for space.

Although I followed the instructions and used only the materials they provided (dirt and fertilizer) both of these tomato plants are dying - they both suffered blossom rot in the beginning and both appear to have the blithe now. I have two plants that were from the same seed packs that are growing in the ground and they are doing fine.

I will use again - but only one tomato and likely I will put cherry tomatoes or something that will not get as big.

I was disappointed to say the least.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

As a city apartment dweller, the thing I've missed the most is the backyard vegetable garden. Over the years, I've tried various ways to grow vegetables in containers on our deck, with varying success. This is the best solution yet -- I ordered the kit, and assembled an assortment of plants based on the description of the self-watering whiskey barrel in the catalog; currently I've got an heirloom tomato, bush cucumbers, plus an underplanting of lots of herbs -- basil, parsley, oregano, sage, and chives. The organic mix plus included fertilizer appear to be the very bomb -- everything growing like, ahem, weeds! Even my husband, who doesn't know a rose from ragweed, commented on it. The wheels are a must, because I can't even imagine how heavy this sucker is; it took 5 watering cans full of water to fill it up. With the wheels, though, it moves smoothly and easily, an added bonus, as it means I can turn it so that all sides can get the sun in turn. My one worry was that it would be too large, but it turns out to be quite compact, and I am very glad I got this rather than the "square foot" version. I could not be happier with this, and look forward to a bumper crop of veggies come late this summer. I'm so pleased, I'm thinking of getting a second one for eggplant and peppers, perhaps, or even squash!

Being unable to get down on the ground to garden any more, my front porch has become my garden using the tomato success kit, planter and stand. Just weeks after planting, the tomatoes are in full blossom. Am looking forward to a good harvest.
The self-watering hanging baskets and planters (purchased in 2008) allow me to continue to garden at a seated level and have restored much enjoyment to my life.

This product delivers! I picked my first tomato on June 11th in Central Arkansas...usually pick my first during the first week of July. Two plants have produced over 60 tomatoes in the month since that first tomato; twice as many as the same variety planted in traditional pots right next to the tomato success kit. And the plants are twice as big. Plenty of blooms and small tomatoes left on the plants. I have never had such results in 10 years of gardening either in pots or in traditional gardening! I will buy two more next season. My only complaint is the cost is a bit high but if you like homegrown tomatoes and you live in an apartment like me, it's worth it.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This self watering container is the best thing that ever happened to my tomatoes, They are growing more vigorously and are more healthy than ever for me. I even some tomatoes that are getting red and will soon be ready for picking. For me in the Denver area, that is amazing since we cannot plant outside until the middle or end of May. I have never (30 years of gardening) had tomatoes rippen this early before. Yeah!

On the negative side, the support cages are not easy to assemble. It took two of us and we lost two of the clasps that attach the supports when they popped off and ended up in the lawn. Each piece must be perfectly alligned or the clasps will not snap into place. I think this desing(or the construction of the clasps) could be improved. However, I have had to send for the support extensions so I suggest you buy the extensions at the same time that you purchase the success kit-you will happily need it as your tomatoes grow so beautifully.

These success kits do not disappoint. I am going to purchase self-watering pots next year for my annual flowers on my pation.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I saw an organic tomato plant at Whole Foods and got this crazy notion that I should try growing it on my Las Vegas balcony. Madness, surely. Especially for me, who's never grown anything!

Being a total novice I planted it in much too small a pot and while it did grow it soon became apparent it needed more space. That's when I found the organic tomato success kit. Perfect! Everything I needed all in one! It was easy for my husband to put together (who is quite handy, but he commented how easy it went together). It is heavy when it's all together, so the casters are a must.

We re-planted our little tomato plant and within days it started to go crazy! In a matter of weeks our "little" plant has grown past the edges of the cage and has all kinds of little yellow buds. All in the searing Las Vegas heat, which is clearly due to the constant watering from underneath. Our second organic tomato success kit is in in shipment to us right now - we're inspired and are going to try growing another plant from seeds!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Tomatoes grown in the TSK, compared to tomatoes planted in-ground right next to the TSK, grow at least 1/3 again as large, and grow very quickly. They remain healthy, and don't need weeding. I've bought four of these kits and have one Big Beef (and I don't mean the tomato!) - the clips that hold the cage together are for the birds. Absolutely useless. Worse than useless, since they're plastic waste I have to just add to the landfill... I use florist wire to put the cage together. But other than that - I recommend this highly. Thank you, GSC!

Excellent product except it was impossible to assemble the upper part of the cage or attach it to the lower cage - it doesn't snap into place and just falls apart when you try to work with it. Lower cage was fine. Now that the plants are a bit taller than the lower cage I'll have to rig something to support them.

The instructions weren't terrific, but assembly was fairly intuitive and got easier after the first planter was put together. It's been a really wet June, but having tomatoes in a planter like this that (a) you can move to maximize sun exposure and (b) controls the amount of water available to the plants seems to get the best out of the plants. It'll be interesting to see how the fruit develops as the wet summer continues.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

The Tomato Success Kit is a success! I purchased it last summer and have had excellent tomato crops last summer and this summer. The tomatoes respond well to the reservoir system. If your tomato plant gets really big (like mine did), you will still need to water it daily even with the reservoir. The only con that I have come across is the fact that it is awkward to clean the container out at the end of the growing season. Being in an apartment and growing my tomatoes on a balcony, I found it difficult to remove the old soil and remaining water efficiently. This one hurdle is not enough to deter me from using it again. Great product!

All this time, I thought tomatoes could only be planted in the ground. The Tomato Success Kit has shown me a new - and better - way to grow strong, healthy plants. Everything comes in the kit, all you have to provide are the actual plants. My tomatoes are growing at an astounding rate and the self-watering feature kept the plants alive during our vacation and 100+ degree temperatures. I added small basil and mint plants to discourage bugs and am looking forward to harvesting pesticide-free tomatoes in a few weeks. The kit is a great way for a beginning gardener to start and I plan to use mine year after year.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Personally I loved the old version of this much better- the hole in the side for filling it up with water was better esp with overflow. The new spout is finicky and filling it takes 3 times as long. The dipstick gets stuck and I can't get a good read on how full it is. With the old one you can stick your finger in the side hole and know how full it is. This one doesn't glide over the deck as well and believe it or not it's smaller even though the dimensions from the top are the same. The same amount of soil came up much higher on this container. What was a pain with the old one was the inner lip/ liner which made it difficult to clean and get that last bit of water out at the end of the season. Otherwise I loved it. Hoping you'll offer this new one as an indoor planter and re-offer the older version for outside use.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I love this product! I bought two sets, and it couldn't have been easier. I do agree with some that the cages weren't the simplest to assemble. I suggest putting the "c" clips on a step before the directions indicate. This keeps the top and bottom cages from slipping when you join them together. I love the fact that everything was in one kit, including an additional dose of fertilizer to top dress the tomatoes two-weeks after planting. The "self watering" container can't get any better. One of the problems in growing tomatoes is having to water them every couple of days. Not so with this kit. The reservoir holds a ton of water, so you don't need to water nearly as often as with other planters. I highly recommend it. My tomatoes are growing like crazy with this kit!

I'm so astounded by the rate of growth of the tomato plants using this kit that I have posted weekly photos on my Facebook page! We have problems with rabbits, but all other attempts to grow tomatoes on the upstairs deck have failed. The cage is hard to assemble - lots of hand strength needed - but sturdy, attractive and a much better support than a traditional cage. It withstood a major storm last weekend with no damage. I planted my tomatoes about a month ago and they're already about to outgrow their cage! I've never tried container gardening and this has been great. I have it on my back deck where the tomatoes can soak up the sun. I recommend the casters because it does get very heavy with plants and water. I can't wait to pick my first tomatoes when they start to ripen soon.

I did have quite a bit of difficulty setting up the cage--it was tough to get the pieces to fit without feeling like the plastic connectors were going to bend. I would have felt better if it came with a few extra connectors just in case.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

    • I use it to grow tomatoes –(in my new solar greenhouse (that used to be an unenclosed porch)):).
    • Great? So far it seems to be growing tomatoes, well actually the plants are doing that but they seem to be happy. I bought the water wicking soil so that is probably a factor. Assembly was easy and the optional wheels are a plus.
    • NSG? The water filler/monitor tube assembly is a bit dodgy. Now that I have the unit functioning with soil and all, how hard is it going to be to reset it if I happen to pull the tube out of it's seat? When I was doing a preliminary assembly, the whole thing fell to pieces more than once. Will I have to dig out half the dirt to retrieve the float and its cage so I can reassemble it? I guess I will just have to be extra careful about opening the thing when I add water.

Easy to set up. Plants are really going full speed. It has been 4 months and my tomato plants are pretty large. Too early for the tomatoes but I expect things to continue to go in the right direction. I like the self watering piece the best. Something that is now on the market for all types of plants and trees. I enjoy the ease of not watering so frequently. The container is pretty heavy when full as it warns. Second level of the cage is hard to attach alone - a second set of hands is helpful.

This is the third kit I have purchased. I had to hire someone to put the first cage together, I got a blood blister putting the second one together myself BUT the third one was the charm. I finally figured out that I could easily put it together using pliers because I didn't have the strength to push them together. Wish I had thought of it before. The kit itself is great, especially for a beginner like me.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I bought this the same weekend that I got a similar one at my local garden store. This one is larger, but seemed a bit fussier to put together. However, I now have tomatoes successfully growing in both, so I'll have to wait and see what my results are! The biggest drawback to this one was that the cage is quite difficult to put together. Directions are adequate, but I had to get help from my husband to force all the parts into place - and I'm pretty strong. I like the folding cages that are sold by Gardener's Supply; I wish this kit contained those cages instead. Suggestion: the plastic soil cover doesn't seem to fit well. Make it with elastic all around the edge (like a fitted sheet) and design it to pop over the top of the planter.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Purchased 3 kits for my first experience growing organic heirloom tomatoes. Kit includes everything but the plants and water. Plants doing so well I had to order the extension cages. Potting mix works exceptionally well with the self watering pots - plants have never been stressed. The included fertilizer is the best - providing a good balance that yields strong thick vines without too many leaves. Only minor criticism - the plastic hardware to hold the cages together could be a better quality.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Somebody needs to take a look at the manual for setting up and watering this product. The unclear and contradictory instuctions resulted in my planter becoming so waterlogged that I had to spend a great deal of time siphoning off excess water with a turkey baster. I have not needed to add water since I set it up three weeks ago. I feel lucky that my plants did not rot. The nice customer service person I spoke to said she had also made the same mistake, based on the faulty instructions.

Pretty easy to use this one! No fuss necessary over the tomato plants....I just dropped them into the soil. They are growing nicely, healthy and yielding.

The only item I would consider improving is: some of the plastic clips used to secure the grates are too difficult to press into position without a tool (pliers) the use of which could damage the cilps or the grate rods.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I bought 2 of these 2 years ago. The first year, I used the entire kit for tomatoes, and had poor outcomes. We had a great deal of rain, which didn't help, but I got only 1 or 2 tomatoes before the plant failed. The red plastic mulch is just a flimsy sheet of plastic that was torn to shreds after one season. Also, the floater ball that is supposed to tell you the water level in the reservoir broke (although I'm not sure how as it's still in the tube) the first year also.
Nevertheless, I like the self-watering planter and the support cage with extension. This spring, I planted onions which did very well. I have planted a second crop of tomatoes without the red mulch and they did better for me. I can still fill the reservoir and just do the standard "finger in the soil" test to tell when to add water. It is extremely useful if you leave for a long weekend, or even to let your neighbor have a couple days rest from watering for you while you're gone. Despite the problems with the mulch and floater, I still use mine and would recommend it.

Had a hard time putting the upper cage on the lower cage as you cannot turn it over to snap these corner braces together. The bottom I could but had to have a neighbor come and use pliers to clip the upper cage onto the lower. Very frustrating for a woman. The upper cage is flimsy without more c clips. I tied mine together with metal twisty ties. Looks bad for product. Do love how my tomato plants are growing so fast and setting on tomatoes already. Fantastic product. Hopefully can afford another one next year and grow more product. [...]

I know the pots are designed to prevent the plants from drying out between waterings, but it seems the pots also prevent the plants from getting water-logged!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

The cage is adequate. The other reviews that heavily criticize it for being very hard to assemble are a bit harsh, but I did need needle nose pliers to assemble it. Once together, it is fine, and the clips hold it nicely to the container.
The containers are a huge step backwards from the old design. Watering and monitoring water level were much easier with a hole in the side to directly fill. When it was full, it overflowed. It was quite simple. The new design with the watering spout is much more awkward to read and water, particularly if you have dense plants in the planter- our plants grow all over the container and cover the spout, so we have to move them around to check the water level and to add water.
I would not buy the new design again, but I would buy the old one if it returned.

I have 5 planters. I put Tomato in three of them and Zuchini in one and Peppers in the other. The Tomato plants have shown the most impressive growth, tripling their size in 3 weeks. The other plants are growing nicely. All plants appear healthy. The great part is I check the water level regularly but so far only have to add water about once per week. This allows us to travel without worrying if the plants will suffer. This is a great experience thus far.

We have 9 in one yard and 3 in another.Giving excess veggies to others is pure joy.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I already had one of the older success kit, and decided to get another one so I can grow more tomatoes. I don't know if it's the fertilizer or the way it's watered (probably both), but the tomatoes just keep coming. I bought the green tub which is more attractive than the "terra cotta" colored tub. And I use the cage extentions on both. Can't imagine growing tomatoes any other way. Since it's so dry during the summer in Colorado, it's great to have the soil wick up the water rather than pouring the water over the soil, which compacts the soil. I wish I could retrofit the older one, though, so I can add water through the upright tube, like in the newer one. I had to get the hole cover for the older one to keep the mosquitoes out, so adding water to it takes a couple extra steps to remove the cover (opening is too small for the hose) etc. On the other hand, with the newer tub, the watering tube's bobbing indicator isn't accurate while you're adding water, so you have to stop frequently to gauge what the water level is, otherwise it may overflow. I know there's a mechanism to allow for the overflow, but here in Colorado, we are very conscious about water usage, so I try not to waste any more than I have to. This is a great design from that angle, as well--no wasted water!

Living at the Jersey shore we are lucky to have some of the best soil to plant tomato. For me however, I don't get the amount of sun because of shade trees. Our upstairs deck receives sun for most of the day so having used you self watering containers to plant tomatos before I desided to try the bigger tomato containers for gardening this year. So far so good, I still plant tomatoes in my small vegetable garden, but the ones on my deck in the self watering container are twice the size and have tomato blossoms already, so now I'm looking forward to some good tomatoes. I also planted other vegetables there, so I'll let you know how well they work.

My sistr and brother-in-law bought this product last year and successfully grew great tomoatoes. They advised me that the cage was very difficult to put together (the parts don't snap in easily). They tried to help me put mine together, but so far, have not been able to. Not being able to cage the plants will adversely affect the yield.

Better with two people if possible. All in all, great system.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I bought 2 new planters to expand on the 2 planters (prior design) that I had used successfully for years. I was greatly disappointed with the new design and found that it did not work as well. The biggest issues I found were:

    - Old design had a drain hole on the side for filling and overflow. The current design has 2 small holes on bottom posts that are not effective in getting rid of excess water.
    - My water level indicators were pulled out and broken within days by local wildlife digging into the planter (they love whatever is in the organic fertilizer). There was no way to put the levels back into container even if they weren't broken. The hole on the side of the old design was great to just put your finger into to determine if the plant needed more water! No way to know if the plant needs more water with new design without a level.
    - Water indicator replacements were not available from catalog or store (Spring '09). Item back ordered until after plants needed to be planted and no way to insert level after container filled. So another year without a water indicator.
    - Cages took a fair amount of time to put together and then disassemble for winter storage. The old folding cages worked well and required no assembly.

The new design is improved in that it does not contain an inside lip like the old design and the lip on the outside makes it easier to pick up!

I'm now looking at my new containers to see if I can retro fit a hole into the side like the old design.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Overall I like this product. However, the wire frames are ridiculously hard to put together. So much so that I never got mine together. This seems to be a fairly wide spread problem as I watched a television show where the host had the same issues and used stakes instead. The problem is with the corner connectors between the first and second frame. They do not work. Nothing with this product should be this hard to use. After messing with it for an hour I gave up and used stakes. Gardeners Supply needs to look at this problem and fix it because of the number of complaints with the cages.

There is little need to fuss with your tomato plants with this product. I am able to fit up to 10 plants in the container. The cage keeps the plants upright, but I would highly recommend purchasing an extension as my plants have grown so tall that they would bend over the top of the cage.

I always wanted to grow my own veggietables but can't find a good place to start a veggietable garden. When I saw this item last year, I decided to give a try. I put it on my deck and we got some tomatoes! My then-2-year-old was excited to water the tomato plant and pick the riped tomatoes. This yeat I decided to expand my deck garden with two more kits and we planted tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes and beans. We are looking forward to picking our own fresh veggies all summer long! It is also a great way to introduce gardening to small/young children. They would love to water the plants.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

THE SELF WATERING TOMATO SUCCESS KIT WAS GOOD EXCEPT FOR THE SUPPORTS. THE TOMATOES WERE EASY TO GROW IN THE CONTAINERS BUT THE SUPPORTS WERE WORTHLESS. THEY WERE HARD TO PUT TOGETHER AND WHEN I DID GET THEM TOGETHER THE WOULD FALL APART IF YOU TRIED TO MOVE THEM. THE NEXT YEAR THEY WOULD NOT GO TOGETHER AT ALL WITHOUT FALLING APART SO I DID THE SMART THING AND THREW THEM IN THE TRASH.

The matter that has my attention right now is extending the growing season. I have two planters on a cart. Perhaps the Fall season could be extended likewise. More later

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Even with supplemental suggestions from Gardeners Supply, I could not get the wire cage sides to fit together. Other supports were too long to stand in the planter. I planted tomatoes anyway, most of which lay on the ground and rotted. The planter itself is great; self-watering feature works well. I'll use it for herbs this year. I recommend it for low plants but not for anything that needs support.

I have put two tomato plants in and am awaiting the results. I did not like how the tomato cage assembled. I could not get the top part to lock into the fasteners. I planted my tomato in the container around 3 weeks ago....it is now a foot and a half tall and I already have little tomato's!! Makes caring for the tomato in a pot very easy. It is also heavy enough that a wind isn't going to blow it over even when the tomato is full grown. This is a very attractive set-up.

I am a porch pot gardener and have been plagued with blossom rot with my tomatoes growing in regular pots. I use this product as a garden on my deck and it works wonderfully. We live in a very windy area and this planter is heavy enough so it doesn't blow around, plus the cage is sturdy enough to support my plants in the high winds. I found the cage to be difficult to snap together by hand so I used a pliers and that worked better. A great product!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I have tried growing tomatoes before, but with little success due to poor light and soil. This kit makes it virtually fool proof to grow them successfully. Instructions were excellent as well as the quality of materials. I would highly recommend purchasing the casters which are sold separately. This enables you to move the plants around to take advantage of light all day. I also like the fact I was able to start my plants sooner than my neighbors who are planting in the ground. It is easy to cover up and keep safe from the unpredictable spring temperatures. Growing tomatoes couldn't get any easier!

I want to be able to leave for a few days without worrying about water for the tomatoes. I will see how this works as compared to my other tomato plants that I'll put a water timer hose on. I had the red plastic on top of the soil but it developed moss/mold even though it's been a pretty dry spring in Seattle since I put the plant in. So I took that off.

I like the general design, the directions are not totally clear, but if you read them, think about it and look at the clips it becomes evident how to put it together.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I purchased this for my father as an early Father's Day gift, who insists on growing tomatoes every year. But his age is slowing him down and getting out to the garden to water and weed is getting more difficult. Not only that, but some nocturnal creatures were helping themselves to the tomatoes. He insisted on still having a garden, so we have both, and the plants in the tomato success kit are taller and bushier then the ones in the garden. Now, every day I see him sitting next to his tomato planter on the deck watching the fruits of his labor grow! The watering device is great for the tomatoes as it gives constant water supply. My friend has one and I couldn't believe all of the tomatoes that she grew in it. The only thing I didn't like about this kit was that the cage required assembly - and 4 hands to put it together!

I love the tomato success kits. I bought three (in green) and found them fast and easy to assemble. I think it is important to buy the wheels for each unit. (Sold separately)They can then be easily rolled anywhere. This also means you can place them in sunshine or shade as needed. Mine are on my large deck and they are simply rolled wherever I want them. The 'self watering' feature of these units is great - especially if you have to leave the plants unattended for a few days. Good size units. They are very durable. They would also be good for growing any other vegetables or flowers - particularly for use on a patio.

I like the self-watering feature so that I am not a slave to watering everyday. I purchased the optional wheels so that the planter can be moved around if necessary. It is quite heavy once filled with soil and water.

My wife and I use this every year to plant our tomatoes. It is a pleasure not having to water the plants each and every day. However I would recommend adding the extra cage because the plants do grow beyond just the two. I would also consider adding a drain for the end of the season.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

It's only May here and I already have small tomatoes on my 2 plants (that's never happened this early). There are a ton of blooms too so I am going to have lots of tomatoes in this compact little grower this year. It looks great and doesn't take up much space (I added the optional wooden box; a bit expensive but really finishes it off). I love the built in cage and the water reservoir makes it so easy to keep watered.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I have one of those fathers that doesn't need or want much. But he has always grown tomatoes. As he has gotten older (80,) he struggles to keep them watered and pest free. He had miserable soil but always got a yield thanks to Calif sun. So this year, I sent him your tomato kit as a birthday gift even though he had 6 plants already going. He was at first skeptical and bulked at the thought of good money unnecessarily going to waste, but a month later, your planter has already outgrown his tomatoes that had 5 weeks head start. He has enjoyed the water reservoir because it gives even watering - the biggest problem for his potted tomatoes. So much of the hassle is gone! So, the magic of this little kit is not that it made a perfect gift, but that it made growing tomatoes perfectly magically once again. Thanks!

When I first set up my tomato success kit, I saw right away it would be useful for far more than tomatoes. I kept ordering more and planted them with eggplants, squash, strawberries, collards and kale, beets and Swiss chard, and pole beans as well as four with tomatoes. The cages are useful for any large plants. My entire garden is on my patio, and promises a great crop!

I purchased three self-watering containers from Gardener's Supply last year, including two Tomato Success Kits. My goal was to grow salad vegetables on my deck, which happens to be the only sunny spot in the yard (and less accesible to the deer, rabbits and woodchuck as well).

The containers (all three) were a whonking HUGE success - producing better than any of my previous traditional (raised bed) gardening methods. Even if I HAD a sunny garden plot spot available now I'm not sure I'd switch back.

I highly (and frequently) recommend this product.

Wonderful kit. It's difficult to grow vegetables in our Southern clay soil. Since moving to Ga, this is the best my plants have grown. It's not the end of May yet and I already have small green tomatos and peppers. Plants look very healthy. Convenient, no guess watering system. We even set up a drip line from irrigation system to add water into reserve twice weekly. We have two of kits and I just ordered another one for cucumbers. Thanks Gardner's Supply for a quality product.

I bought this because I wanted a planter with a sturdy cage that I could use as a frame for plastic netting in an attempt to thwart Mr. Groundhog and friends. However, after half an hour of trying to assemble the cage sections with the clips provided, I gave up. I went to my trusty duct tape and had a functioning unit in 5 minutes. You need a better system for connecting the sections -- those plastic clips pop apart too easily.

The plastic parts that anchor the wire supports tend to oxidize over the summer, so I'm not using the upper wires for a second season. They get brittle and break by season's end.

Considering how expensive this kit is, the quality of the fasteners could be much better--and replacement parts made available.

I'm still looking for something to replace it with, besides using stakes in the center.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This is a great planter, and my first year using it.I planted some Cherokee Heirlooms and some Kimberly container tomatoes. I just got them in recently, so don't know yet how the growth will be, but everything is looking very promising. I got the cart too, and I recommend either the cart or the wheels no matter what. It will be a little difficult to move without wheels of some kind.A note on the cage assembly, it is a bit tricky, but only from a strength perspective. Here is what I did after 10 minutes of fumbling around... attach the connectors to the bottom part of the cage by pushing down against a hard surface, I did it on my kitchen floor easily. Don't be afraid to use your feet with some shoes or flip-flops on, it wont hurt a thing. Next, get a towel and push the top cage ends against the bottom ends so you are applying pressure to the joint from both sides to snap the top portion to the bottom. Go corner by corner. Put part of the cage on a chair if you need something to hold up the already assembled bottom portion while you attach the top. It doesn't have to be perfect as you can move the first side of the top portion of the cage like it's on a hinge and align it up later, then attach the second side of the top. Once you get one end in, the rest is a breeze. Just use a towel so you can push forcefully without hurting your hands, you could even use a pair of pliers around the towel to do it even easier. All in all, it took me less than 5 minutes to put the cage together after it figured it out. And the cage is extremely sturdy once properly assembled and installed into your planter. It feels like one solid piece. Be sure to assemble the whole cage first, THEN put it into the planter. Don't try to put it into the planter piece by piece and work your way up, that would just suck. Gardeners could do everyone a favor by improving the directions a bit in this regard.Remember to cut the tips of the container where it is pre-marked for drainage holes too!And lastly, check to make sure the water level indicator is in the middle circular hole, instead of one of the sides, it can slip out during shipping and give you an inaccurate reading if it is not in the middle hole.Good luck!

So, this year, I purchased another replenish kit and a second full tomato success kit. I am very happy with this product and any of the products I have purchased from Gardener's Supply

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

After a disappointing tomato growing season last year, I was very eager to try the Tomato Success kit. It took awhile for my husband to put the steel cage together. It was difficult and often frustrating because the construction was so flimsy. He had to add his own reinforcements, otherwise the darn thing would have fallen apart. But, after he mickey moused the cage construction so that it wouldn't fall apart...it looks great! I'm hopeful that this is the answer to my tomato growing woes.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I listed myself as an avid gardener - but I really only started about 5 years ago with these self watering containers. I have had more success than I ever could have hoped for right from the get go. Between these kits and the seed starting kits, I had a jungle of tomatoes (and other plants) in no time.
I find the containers sturdy and easy to store, and the soil included with the kit works much better then traditional potting soil when it comes to using these pots. They have already lasted through multiple seasons - and moves back and forth across the country.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

We use the success kit on our porch. The addition of the trolley makes the mobility of it wonderful. There have been 2 unusual & unexpected periods of nighttime temperature drops. We have easily moved the planter to an area that would protect the plants from any potential frost then easily moved it back into its sunny location when the temperatures were safe. Without this flexibility our thriving tomato plants would have surely suffered damage. The additional height that the trolley provides means that planting, etc has been so easy, especially for those with back health issues. We are so happy that we purchased the kit plus the trolley.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This product was as described and went together in only a few minutes using the very understandable directions. Those who had trouble with the wire cage construction and the clips that hold it together have a minor point: some of the metal ends were not welded perfectly flush, and so required pliers to get the corner clips to lock in place. This happened on two corners of one of the two units I purchased; one weld was off enough that I decided to file down the overlapping end to get a better fit. Noticed that the fill- spout is an improved design over one of the self-watering units we bought two years ago. Very happy with everything.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I have the previous version of this planter that my sister no longer wanted to use. I felt it worked well so ordered another one as I wanted just two more tomato plants. Whoever designed the tomato support cage for this version should be fired! This is like building with kid's building blocks that won't stay together and keep falling apart. I spent over 30 min trying to get the cage to stay together. The support cage for my older kit was put in the planter within 2 min. The newer one will probably not support the plants when they are bigger, and at some point I suspect I will have to resort to wire ties to keep it together as I'm sure the little plastic pieces will break.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I was disappointed with the product. The self watering aspect was a key purchase feature. By the time I had all the soil in place the filling tube leveling ball must have dislodged since it no longer registered the water level accurately. The cage was also rather flimsy and did not simply "snap" together. More "c" clips should have been included to keep the sides together. I would not purchase this product again.

The system was easy to put together and plant. The two cherry tomatoes in this system have grown faster than the garden transplants. It is an attractive planter on my patio--although I will have to get more acclimated to the red plastic mulch. The water indicator is easy to understand and the opening to add water is quite large and easy to use.

I love the fact that I can walk out on my deck and care for my tomatoes. I bought the organic container kit plus the wheeled trolley. GREAT! The only negative I have so far is the cage that you put together around the top of container. My husband and I could NOT get the plastic connectors to work...just didn't snap together and hold. We finally (in between bursts of laughter) used thin wire to wrap around and hold each point together. Looks fine and holds well. Stay tuned on whether I get tomatoes or not!

This was the perfect choice for my Mother's Day gift to my Mom. Since my Father passed away, she has not been able to keep up with their garden, and we had to let it grow in...she remarks every summer how much she misses the garden. This will be just perfect for her to plant a few things, just enough for her! She loved it and I am sure that she will get outdoors now everyday to check on her little patio garden! It is sure to be successful since the kit supplies everything she needs, all she has to do is pick her plants!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This is my 3rd self watering planter and 2nd tomato success kit. The "old" success kit has a fold-up cage for supporting the tomatoes. The new one had us struggling with pliers and hammers for at least 30 minutes to put together. It's probably easier to store, but the fold up cage is SO much easier to install. Please reconsider this new frame. The plastic attachments look flimsy, and I worry that they'll get lost over the winter. No such worry with the fold up support cage.

So far, I and my tomatoes are very happy with the Tomato Success Kit. It came with everything you need to grow happy tomotoes. My plants are HUGE and already flowering and about to grow tomatoes. The size is perfect for 2 tomato plants, and fits nicely on a deck or patio. The only complaint I have is that the tomato cage is not very well built. It was HARD to fit the parts together, the brackets do not work as intended, and I had to use twist ties to get the bars to stay together. I wonder if they will hold up for another year, or if I will have to get a different cage to use with this next year. Everything else is great though.

I am trying out this product for my older clients who can no longer garden. If all goes well, I will be promoting this product next spring for patio gardens. Instructions relatively easy to read, but I will probably put together and install for my clients. Downfall - This container needs a stand for ease of use.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Our first tomato success kits were for our own use. Since moving to the Phoenix area we have longed for a tomato with the flavor we knew from the north east home of our youth. Every year we tried new methods, spoke to other folks transplanted from the north and through trial and error (mostly error) we coached a few tomatoes from our patio garden. With our intense heat (118 is not uncommon)and very dry conditions it has been frustrating. When I read about the water reservoir in your kit, I thought it might begin to solve some of the problems. We set up the kits in early February and planted 4 different varieties of tomatoes. Each of the 4 has produced more tomatoes than we have ever harvested here, with less work and worry than ever before.

The latest tomato success kits we ordered were sent to sons living in a Brooklyn apartment and a California house. One will be on the roof and the other in a shady back yard. Both men are excited about the possibilities. We are looking forward to hearing about their success.

Got this as a replacement for the Earth Box in which I grew tomatoes for years. I have little available gardening space and have had excellent results in the past with container box tomatoes. It's early in the season but the plants seem to be growing nicely. I like the included trellis as in past years I've struggled using round tomato cages with a rectangular planter. I look forward to a good crop this year and find the planter easy to use and the water level easy to check.

I started buying the kits when I moved to a house in town. I didn't have much sunny space with decent soil, and I started exploring alternatives. I bought my first Tomato Success Kits a few years ago, and I've now got 6 and am adding more. The only complaints are that the wire cages are difficult to get together, and a couple of the feed tub flaps won't stay down.

These planters are an excellent way to grow ripe tomatoes successfully in a small garden with a short growing season. I get 4-6 feet of snow each year so I must disassemble and store the planters each year. The cages aren't built for disassembly and reassembly. This year, I'm going to try spiral supports instead of the cages. I wish I could buy replacement parts. The float/ fill spout is broken on one of my planters.

I bought this kit because we want to supplement the tomatoes that we get from our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). We love going to the farm to pick up fresh vegetables every week during the summer, and just crave more tomatoes! With little space to have a vegetable garden, we are trying this kit because we have had such great success with the self-watering window boxes that we bought two years ago. We can almost taste the luscious tomatoes we plan to grow in this attractive, easy to use, self-watering container kit. Simply everything came in the kit!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I bought 3 of the tomato systems for my deck. One for cherry tomatoes, one for large tomatoes, and one for peas. I almost didn't get the casters because there wasn't a picture, and they seemed expensive. I bought them anyway, and was SO glad I did because they're heavy and you wouldn't be able to move them otherwise. The casters are high quality and I would have been disappointed without them.
I also nearly didn't make the purchase because of the comments that made it sound like the cage was difficult to install, but have a handy husband and figured we could always use zip ties if nothing else. I used the directions by myself, and it was a piece of cake - and I'm awful with directions. My husband was impressed with the quality (and with my job of putting it together without him)
I had started my peas indoors, and planted them yesterday - they've already grabbed onto the first rung of the cage, and look beautiful. The grandkids are so excited. They're going to buy the tomato plants this weekend.
I just couldn't be happier with this purchase!
Thank you so much for making this so easy for a novice!
