(based on 768 ratings)
Located in: Gardening, Seedstarting, Soil Mixes

Our field tests prove it: In self-watering planters, this lightweight mix works better than conventional potting soil. Its coarse, airy texture acts like a wick, carrying water from the planter’s reservoir to the root system. The result is more vigorous root growth, better aeration and less waterlogging. It's also an ideal mix for standard pots and planters. Contains sphagnum peat, perlite, vermiculite and limestone. 20-quart bag.

  • Promotes vigorous root growth
  • No waterlogged soil
  • Amazing wicking action

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I just bought two self-watering containers for my patio. This is the first time I've used these and I wanted to get started off right by using the right soil. I think this is a good choice. It is light and airy and looks like it is full of organic material. It seems to soak up exactly the right amount of moisture that the plants need. I thought I'd help my seeds and seedlings along when I first planted them by watering some from the top. But, apparently it did not need it, because almost all of it drained out the overflow holes. I just left it alone after that and things are growing fine. [...] I may get it again next year because I can trust it, being a novice at all this!

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

Unique soil blend that is worth ordering by mail. It is light and fluffy and while designed for self-watering containers, could also be used for regular window boxes, hanging containers or small pots. I don't know of its long-term nature, but self-watering containers and window boxes should be cleaned or 'refreshed' annually, anyway. For regular boxes and containers, this soil could be mixed with other container soils to achieve certain soil types; at least I like doing that.

self watering container mix.
By Yearly Container GardenerVerified Purchaser from New York, NY on 5/26/2011
Pros:
Great mix for the plants, Second year using it
Cons:
I repeat process yearly

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I use the soil to plant my terrace geraniums every year. The plants love it because the containers are self-watering so the roots just take the amount of water they need. The only negative is that I throw away the soil in October so I can store the planters. And Come spring I just can't plant new plants in old rooted soil. Its a big job to do this but I feel worth it because the self watering containers will keep the geraniums healthy for 6 months till frost sets in.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I have 4 Begonia plants and a bag of Gardeners Supply container mix. 2 Begonia plants were planted in a hanging basket with some of the mix. 2 other Begonia plants went into a pot filled with compost and another kind of potting mix. Both were watered and given good location.
Within a week you could see the difference!
I have never advertised like this before! But I do now. Those 2 Begonias growing in your special mix just radiated out and up with vibrant color. The other two just - pfff! Ordinary. So So. Half the life and growth.
Only complaint - I wish I could afford 100 bags of that stuff. There are suggestions for making your own mix which I might try. But that bagged beautiful stuff is really tops! All ready for use.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

This is my second year using this in my self-watering containers. I personally order this because it works better than any product that sells locally. I also do not have the time to create the mix myself. At first it seems a little expensive to order soil through the mail with shipping costs, but with a coupon vs driving to buy locally, it is worth it. It drains well, is light and fluffy and it gets the job done for my tomatoes, carrots, and potatoes which were all in containers last year. Great product overall!

I have used this before in my self-watering deck pots. It saves a lot of time and water hauling on my upper deck. Just fill the pot reservoir and the soil wicks up the water. I did find out that after about 3 years, it seemed to stop being as effective. I will be replacing it all this year. (Should be changed anyway I suppose!) It is also very lightweight and makes moving the pots very easy.

For as long as I've known about your catalog, and that is probably over 10 years, I've used the seed starting mix along with your APS seed starting kits. I have nearly 100% success rate, and if something doesn't come up, it is the seed, not the mix. I've referred this seed starting mix to anyone who shows an interest in seed starting.

This product is absolutely wonderful. I recently moved to a home with a larger yard and now I am able to really expand my "gardening horizons"! I mixed this with a few other seed starting products such as peat and pearlite. I love the feel, the smell, the look of this mix. Last week I started a few seeds that have already germinated. I will tell all my gardening friends to please purchase this self watering mix. My first order was 5 bricks but I liked it so much I placed a second order for TWELVE bricks. I'm a happy lil' gardener. Thank You Much

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I think this is absolutely the best container soil. I use it in all the self watering containers I have, plus in traditional containers. It doesn't contain a lot of "junk" ingredients like sticks or big pieces of wood or other materials; it doesn't compact in the container. Plants seem to thrive better with this "dirt". I have tried other container soils and they do not hold a candle to this.

I regularly used this for vegetables and herbs with amazing results. This year I planted some impatiens in this container mix and planted some in a standard bagged mix from a nursery. The impatiens in the standard mix from the nursery are very leggy and nearly gone for the year (it's an unusually wet January), but the impatiens in this container mix are in full, spectacular bloom. I'm ordering more for my hanging baskets.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I recently planted a mandevilla in a potting mix that was not Gardner's Supply's self-watering container mix thinking how much difference would it make? Wrong! Planted next to a mandevilla with Gardener's container mix looks like a tv commercial. Gardener's pot has a beautiful healthy mandevilla that only needs watering every 2 weeks and the one with another mix looks sickly and needs watering every couple of days. They are hanging side by side on my patio and it's hard to believe the difference. I've learned my lesson to make the effort to only use Gardener's container mix if I want my plants to survive and grow well. In the San Gabriel Valley in California we can get extreme cold temperatures and very hot temperatures.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

Yes, I could have purchased dirt anywhere locally. and I could have used soil from my yard but living in the desert southwest doesn't make that a prudent choice due to its poor quality and lack of organic supplements. After reading other reviewers who'd done the same thing and were surprised at the quality and pleased with the end result. I decided to give it a try. Additionally, soil like this is about the same price locally as it was through Gardener's Supply online. It's terrific stuff, works great with my intended use, tomatoes, eggplants & peppers. I also used it in my Grow Camp raised garden. The seeds and plants placed in this soil grew faster and are visibly stronger as a result!

I washed the revolution planter bags, and bought more Self Watering soil this year and my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are looking beautiful. I am so excited about this years growth. I find that I fill the reservoir with water and it just waters them slowly and my plants are looking great this year. I will purchase more next year and may start switching to the NEW Revolution Planters next season. I like the new design to get the plants in the planters. Anyway, I really love growing things up-side down, and I have 2 4X4 posts that I cemented in at the edge of my garden, which holds my 8 Revolution planters and I will continue to have them every year. I have vines growing around the posts and it looks really nice. I love them.

Good stuff.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I purchased two new self-watering containers for my deck this season and used this soil in those containers. I had used the same mix in my old self-watering planters from last year but had not replaced it with new. The flowers in the new containers are twice the size and had twice the blooms. Wow. I guess next year I won't be so cheap and I will replace all the soil in the planters as recommended.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

Used this in our Self-Watering window boxes we bought from Gardener's Supply. We LOVE the window boxes and this soil mix worked PERFECT! Never a problem. We used this at our beach house where we do not live full time. Our flowers always were watered. When gone for extended periods of time, it was very simple for our neighbor to keep our plants watered. Very little monitoring needed.

The bag of dry soil is light enough to carry to your work area and has holes to allow easy mixing with water before putting it in the container.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I have containers which sit alongside my cement driveway all day in the hot sun. I used to have problems with them drying out even if I watered them every morning and every evening. With my Gardeners Supply self-watering pots and this container mix, that concern is gone, and I don't even have to water every other day. This mix works beautifully with the self watering pots and my plants grow much faster than in tradtional pots, even when filled with brand name "moisture control" potting mix.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I purchased 9 of the self-watering window boxes and this mixture to put in them. My plants are doing very well with minimal care. On the advice of the great Gardener Supply people, I waited for about a week after planting and then added some mild liquid plant food to the soil. I've read comments from others that purchased the window boxes that they were having problems with them draining poorly. I'd highly recommend using this soil, as even after days of rain, my boxes and plants are doing great.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

It works very well for the self-watering containers. I have not liked the small square plastic self-waterers. They get too wet. The indicator for the water level is the best in them. The large square self-watering container also gets too wet. The rectangle trough is the best in the plastic ones. The teak self watering squares are great for my blueberries. They are on the deck to protect the berries from the birds. I was unable to get the upside down cylinder planters to work very well. I don't know how much water to give them.

I use this product in two self-watering planters at our out-of-state campsite. The container mix kept the moisture at a good level, without drying out too much or becoming saturated.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I had previously ordered the self-watering planters but did not use until beginning of June along with the potting soil. We were gone for eight days and the TN summer weather was hot, also rainy. Upon our return home we were delighted to see that the plants and my hubby's vegetables in pots looked wonderful in spite of the heat and amount of rain that occured while we were gone. Very pleased with all products I have purchased from Gardener's Supply. These self watering devices are a great idea, best since sliced bread. Staff at Gardener's Supply are always pleasant and very helpful. Thank You.

I've tried other soils which claimed an ability to hold on the water but haven't been happy with them. They tend to compact more than this soil. This mix went from the bag to the upside down tomato planters I purchased from this site. It has allowed the tomato plants to explode - just planted on Mother's Day & less than 1 month into the planting, I have numerous flowers & a few baby tomatoes already. The mix keeps the roots hydrated & allows for easy expansion of the entire root system throughout. It is light, which is a good thing because when the planters are assembled & full, they weigh ALOT. I will use this mix next year, the year after, etc.

This is great for container gardening. I used it to plant vegetables and herbs in self-watering containers and grow bags. Initially I used my own mixture of soil, manure, perlite, fertilizer and peat moss in the grow bags, but my mixture was just too heavy to move around once it was in the containers. The container mix is a perfect blend and it's light weight. It's worth the price.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I grow tomatoes in my tomato success kit and hanging tomato planters in it. Mixed with some good organic fertilizer, it's great! I can even lift the hanging tomatoes-the soil is so light. I had to move some last year due to the weather.

The only drawback I had was that one of the hanging kits grew some mold or fungus last year because we had a really wet, humid summer. I don't fault the Mix for that, though. It didn't grow it as bad as some of the other things I was using for plants.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I use the self-watering container mix in two windowboxes that are attached to my porch railing. I have had these for several years, and each year I order the mix from Gardeners Supply because I know it will work well with the self-watering planters. I have seen other mix in stores that claim to do the same thing, but I would rather use Gardeners Supply's mix because it is tried and true. Once a week watering is all it takes. I recommend these containers and the container mix to all my friends who inevitably ask where I found such wonderful planters.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I planted two tomato plants using revolution planters. One held the self watering container mix and the other held the left over bag of soil I used from last year. Within a week the bag without the self watering container mix got too heavy from unexpected rain and broke my plant bracket causing my tomato plant to pound into the ground as it fell. The container with self watering container mix is easier to lift when hanging and is also still holding strong.

I was skeptical, but this stuff is great! I tried it in one outdoor pot & the results are excellent. It drains well & my plants love it. I am truly suprised by the results. The plants in that pot are 1/3 bigger than others.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I have never been sure why you only advertise it for "self watering pots." I use it for all outdoor container plants. It works just as well. if not better, than other soils. I like the fact that it is lightweight making the bags easy to lift and cart around. This is great for those of us who aren't quite as spry as we used to be. Considering our aging population, I think you're missing a good bet.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I purchased two large self watering patio planters from this web site. I also bought 2 bags of this mix to fill one of them. I decided to buy container soil at [...] that matched the contents of this mix most closely (and which was much cheaper) to fill the other planter. I planted identical plants in each planter (snap dragons and pansies). All the plants in this mix are still alive and doing well while in the other mix most of the pansies died immediately and the snap dragons aren't doing as well. THIS MIX IS DEFINITELY WORTH THE PRICE. I won't experiment with other mixes again for use with self-watering containers.

Didn't buy enought for the four planters and ended up with two of this product and two planters with "similar" material from a local garden center. MISTAKE! There was a big need (almost 2x) to water the garden center ones more than the Gardener's Supply mix. I won'r make the same mistake twice.

This year I grew tomatoes on my patio using the

I put this soil in several container roses on my deck. Between the self-watering containers, periodic rain, and this soil I have not had to actually water the roses at all this summer. Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I was given a Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) for my birthday last year. After fretting over the limp leaves and sad look it had from top-watering, I started to bottom water it with a catch-bowl underneath. This became annoying and a bit unsightful. I came across this special soil and also the reservoirs for pots (which allow bottom-watering) and now have a very happy healthy Peace Lily. It is gorgeous!! Thanks for helping me to keep this very thoughtful and lovely plant.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I was given a beautiful Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) as a birthday gift last year. It was not doing well in its original pot with top-watering, so I started bottom watering it with a dish underneath for excess water. That was just plain annoying! I found this product on-line, along with the reservoir system for any pot, and I now have a fantastic healthy Peace Lily. Can you say, happy, happy, happy??? :-} Awesome soil!! Thanks Gardener's Supply!!!!

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

Decided to use the recommended self-watering container mix to go with my new planters from Gardener's. Bags are lightweight and after filling 20" planters (including water), I can still lift them. Planting was easy. However I lost some of my drought-resistant plants so I'm not sure how the self-watering feature starts to work. The water in the reservoir needed about a quart after the first month. There must be some missing step to get the water defusing upward into the soil. I've been watering more and the remaining plants look great. I'm hopeful the self-watering feature will still work, especially in the winter with my native perennials.

I use this planter mix to grow various vegetables, from tomatoes to bell peppers and herbs. It's a well balanced mix, that allows for good water penetration to the root systems, and allows for vigorous growth.I live in a very arid and dry upper desert climate, where water evaporation is very high,so this product holds the moisture in the soil wonderfully.I have nothing but good things to say about this product,I am very satisfied.
