I apppreciate all things, including this potting soil, to the extent I only preach part time. Indeed, the excellent product is good as nature in it's aplication. We have used this starter mix for years. We fill qt. yogurt containers with the dampened mix (after punching holes in the bottom of the containers!) add seeds,put the lids on and place the containers under a grow light. Usually have sprouts within 3-5 days.We then remove the lids and put the containers in a tray, so we can water from the bottom. In 3-4 weeks, we have big, healthy plants to start hardening off. No transplanting of tiny seedlings. The plants do well in this mix ( watered with mildly fertilized water once they have been thinned). We've had consistent success using this mixture to get our veggie plants started ahead of warm weather.

I used the germinating mix in the seed starter kits for starting herbs from seed (basil, dill, oregano and thyme). It worked perfectly, and I had a very high germination rate for the seeds. The germinating mix was very light, but held moisture evenly without getting too soggy. I have bought more to try with flower seeds, highly recommend this soil mix.

In previous years, I always purchased plants for my garden. This year I decided to start from seed, although I was nervous about what to expect. Planted the seedlings on Saturday, and by Wednesday had several that had already sprouted. This product works very well, I have sowed a large variety of seed in this mix, Ground Cherry, Coriander(Cilantro), Basil, Spaghetti squash, Bell Pepper, Chile Tepin, Zucchini, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Celery, Luffa, Cantaloup, Watermelon, Tomato, Pumpkin, Butternut Squash, and Cucumber. Most of them germinated quickly and without any problems. The ones that have yet to germinate are the Passionfruit and the Chocolate Vine,but those usually take a long time to germinate.

I am happy with this germination mix. Though I am still experimenting with this particular mix in various growing conditions/methods. I can say - so far it seems to be doing well for starting off almost all of my seeds.
Some are not germinating but that is possibly due to the age of the seed and not the mix. I recommend this to anyone who want to give their seeds or new sprouting plants a head start. Additionally , I add some nutrient to this to help give good nutrition. I am growing without the use of manure and this is a great addition to many of my projects.

I have used this mix for many years in the foam seed-starters - it is perfect in this application and I have not yet found a suitable replacement - others I've tried stay too moist and cause fungal and other problems. It is pretty easy to mix up and reasonably easy to load into the cells of the seed starters, seems to encourage good root growth, and is slick in popping out seedlings for garden or transplant.

I did an experment this year and used four different seedling mixes. I put three seeds from the same package in each mix and all in same green house seedling box. Gardner's germinating mix was the last to germinate but all did germinate. Two weeks post germinations, the plants in the Gardener's mix were bigger and healthier than any of the other mixes. It is not too fine as some reviewers have said but it is finer than most. Great product and will use exclusively next year.

I tried a different brand of seed mix last year and regretted it. For over 10 years I have been using this product and it works better than any seed starting mix I have found. Whether you are using the APS growing systems , plastic containers or rolling newspaper pots this has definitely worked the best for me.
I soak the medium in hot water before filling the pots that helps it to soak in faster and warms the soil for the seeds to germinate.

This is a great product. I've used it for years. The soil is so light and airy it's just perfect for seed starting. I use it in seed starting trays as well as in the garden. When planting directly into the garden I make a small hole in the garden soil then fill it with moist germinating mix. I then plant the seed into the germinating mix.

This product had my seeds sprouting faster than the instructions on the back of the packet. Cucumbers and zucchini take 7-14 days to germinate they were popping up in 4. Peppers take 14-21 days and were popping up in 7, amazing!

Being an avid seed-starter, I'm always looking for ways to improve my germination and the size and health of my seedlings. In the past, I've mixed my own seed starting formula, but last year I decided to give this a try. I did a side by side comparison with my own "secret blend" and found that the Gardener's Supply mix resulted in better germination rates, faster growth, and overall healthier seedlings! I will buy this from now on for each growing season!

I did a side-by side test of Gardeners germinating mix vs a popular seed-starting mix from [...] I had fungus and moss growing on the competitor's mix even before the seeds sprouted. If you have expensive or precious seeds to start, the Gardeners germinating mix is really worth the added cost for the assurance that you will not get any fungus or plant diseases in their product.

I have used this mix in Gardener's Supply's Seedstarting Systems for years with excellent results.It is always light, and fine textured, perfect for the tiniest seeds! Not so with store brand mixes. They are not always uniform. If it doesn't grow in a Gardener's supply APS Seedstarter System with Germinating Mix it must be BAD seed!!!!!!

I start seeds every year with about 30-40% success. This year I decided to try the Gardener's germinating mix and grow lights and I have about a 95% germination rate! The lights are abviously a big deal, but the mix is just as important. I used the Miracle Grow seed starting mix on one half of my trays and the Gardener's mix on teh other, both under the lights. I can't believe how much higher the germination rate on the Gardener's mix is and how much hardier the seedlings are. I definitely recommend!

I use this in my APS seed starters, and it works so much better than other mixes I have tried. It really helps to keep the seedlings healthy, and at the optimal moisture level. Love it!
The only downside is I find that it doesn't go as far as the website says, one bag fills 3 of my 24-cell APS trays.

I start my tomato seedlings in reused yogurt cups, under lights, with a clear lid initially. I use this mix, and with it get near 100% germination-- which is crazy! especially since many of my seeds are saved seeds, or really old. I like that this mix is pre-moistened-- most seed starting mixes are dry, and they don't take up water well initially so it's hard to monitor water levels when planting. It's definitely waaay worth it to mail-order this mix instead of picking up the ubiquitous MG at [...] Spending money on seed starting is, in my mind, a no-brainer: you could spend this much buying seedlings just by walking by a garden center a month later!

Like this mix better than only spaghnum peatmoss. It's black, fine textured,and the seedlings seem sturdier. I thoroughly wetted it down, mixed it up, squeezed out the excess, and filled the pots firming it in.

This reasonably priced product gave excellent results. I planted lettuce seeds in a terra cotta bowl in the geminating mix and put the bowl in my indoor portable greenhouse. I had seedlings 4 days later. I am very pleased with this product and plan to purchase it again. It is very light and holds moisture well.

It's too cold right now in my state to start planting seeds just yet, but this looks very promising as a growing medium (check back in another few weeks!). I've examined it, run it through fingers, etc. I could actually pick up the bag (lightweight!) which gave me the impression it would be wonderful for young, growing roots. It has a nice fragrance that doesn't smell musty.

I propagate cuttings of geraniums, coleus, ivy, impatiens and even roses by dipping cuttings in a growth hormone and inserting them in germinating mix about 3 inches deep (with a 1 to 2 inch layer of fine sand beneath it) in a small terrarium. The terrarium is on a heat mat 24/7 and gro-lights are used 14 hrs. per day. In less than 3 weeks all cuttings have great roots.

I used this product for the first time. I've just bought a greenhouse and wanted to give my seeds the best start. This product is very reliable. I planted my vegetable seeds in the germinating soil, and they ALL grew in a matter of days. I've also planted some of my herbs in the regular potting soil. The ones I've planted in the germinating soil have all come up, but I'm still waiting on the ones in the potting mix. This product really is worth buying. The only negative is that they need to offer a larger bag. So if you're going to be planting a large garden, you'll need to buy a couple of bags of the germinating soil especially if you're using the deep root planters.

Great for starting Heirloom Tomatoe seeds with the APS self watering trays. I have two APS 40 seed starting trays and two APS 24 seed starting trays. One bag of Germinating Mix was more than enough to fill all four trays. This mix gets the seeds to young plants before any fertilizer is needed. It takes the guess work out of giving your seeds what they need to get started.

I bought 3 of the deep root seed starting systems, and used this dirt in them. I had at least ten of the seeds shooting up withing 3 days! I was shocked at how fast they grew- many were shooting up an inch a day. I live in Vegas, and this is my second year gardening. Last year, at most 10% of my plants actually produced food, largely because I killed the seedlings from ignorance. With the deep root system & this dirt, I'm off to a much better start. It's affordable (one bag almost filled 45 4" cells), and is idiot proof enough to work for me. I've really learned my lesson about buying the right tools for the job!

I started all of my garden plants in this mixture in the greenhouse in March. My plants grew rapidly and were transplanted to larger containers and then to the garden in late April. I planted way more seeds than I needed because I expected that about half would germinate. Wrong! I had enough tomato plants to supply my garden and 4 others. A great product!

I have used the germinating mix for 3 years now. It is light and airy but when mixed with warm water, very little is needed to fill a small pot. I use this to germinate seeds. Currently, I have enough plants to supply 3 families, and I have already given a few plants to 3 other families. I usually order 4 bags plus another container mix at the beginning of the garden season but next time I am going to double the amount. The only draw back to ordering germinating mix after the beginning of the garden season is that the product smells very mildewy. That may be me because of my oversensitive sinuses but it is good to know if you suffer from asthma or allergies. My solution is to buy more than you think you need at the beginning of the season. It keeps very well over the gardening season. I am just so sorry I didn't purchase more because I am in withdrawal. I haven't been able to find a product I like as much at my local gardening stores. Works well in seed-starting kits. I like to keep a full bag, as well as a partial bag, in my basement, to avoid delay when I find a few minutes to get the spring seeds started.
But how can the nice sturdy plastic bag, which of course is dirty when emptied, be recycled or reused to avoid burdening the environment?

I use this product to start peppers and tomatoes from seed indoors, and it gives nearly 100% germination. It's easy to mix: just add water, let it sit a bit, and stir. The plants germinate quickly compared to what seed-starting guidelines state, and compared to other seed-starting products I've tried. I've also used it for herbs and flowers, again with very successful results.

I have used the germinating mix for 3 years.I use it with the ABS germinating trays. It works so well. I used a local brand one year and did not have the success that I had with Gardener's brand. I have not had any trouble with damping off with Gardener's. Would not use any other.

I have used the germinating mix for 3 years and am guaranteed a bounty of plants (both vegetables and flowers). I plant 2 inch containers with the germinating mix and my seeds. I typically check my pots every day/every other day and add about an ounce of water to each pot. I transplant the plants when they have two sets of leaves. The best part for me is that the mix is never mildewed since my sinuses are ever so sensitive to mold. I would never use another product again and have even convinced my husband of its attributes. Why toy with success!

It works! I filled up the deep rooted seed starting kit with this stuff, and all of the seeds sprouted. Currently, mid April, my tomatos, peppers and egg plants are still in the seed starting kit, but they are getting bigger and the weather here is getting warmer so I will transfer them to the garden soon. I hope to have a very productive garden this summer. I had never started from seed before, just bought plants from big home imoprovement store. This gives me better selection of plants that I want. ie- heirloom stuff.

This is the best seed starting soil that I have found. It is great with both small and large seeds whereas many other brands only seem to work well with large seeds. It is particularly good for using in reusable seed starting kits. I purchase it every year.
