Your seeds have germinated nicely, your plants are doing great, and it's time to repot. Here's how to ensure that seedlings thrive at this crucial stage: transplant into these pots that water themselves! The system includes a 1/2-gallon reservoir tray, a capillary mat that wicks water up to plants, 2 transport trays for carrying pots, and your choice of (40) 2", (18) 3" or (12) 4" pots.

  • Reuse the system year after year

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

Used to move seedlings to larger pots.
The pots included did not have good wicking action - the dirt was dry on top everyday.
The tray without the pots worked very well for newspaper pots keeping them upright and well moistened.
The tray was larger than my grow light setup and I couldn't put it under the lights. I could fit the pot holder in a regular flat under the lights.

I bought three of these in different sizes. The 2" version is really small and might be better for starting seeds. I like the product because it allows me to bottom feed and to easily move in and out of the greenhouse. I do wish the plastic housing was a bit stronger. Thanks.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

We use these self-watering pots for germinating seeds. The best part is that the soil always stays moist and, therefore, the seeds don't dry out as they are getting started. We left the flat in the rain once, and this caused some mold to grow on the soil. That was our fault though; the soil was way too wet. The plastic for the pots and self-watering flat seems a bit thin, and we wonder how long these will last, but right now they are holding up just fine (we have been using them about 1 1/2 months).

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

This is the second set I've owned; the first lasted three years before the tray leaked. I've tried other systems and found this to be the most flexible for my needs, which include starting small quantities each of a variety of seedlings.
I wish the tray was of a heavier gauge plastic, as it is easily damaged. A clear plastic top would help keep the seedlings moist during germination.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

These are great. At this time of year we have to move the 'babies' in the house at night and back outside in the daytime quite often and the trays keep everything so very dry and neat. Before getting these it was a mess trying to move a whole tray of starters in or out of the house without spilling water or getting dirt everywhere. Also, filling them and having the water wick up throughout the day is great. It avoids the 'drowning or drying' method......

    Holey Trays

    Pros:
    Attractive Design
    Cons:
    Flimsy, Holes in tray
    Describe Yourself:
    Avid Gardener

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I do love the transplant pots, wicking mat, and overall design of these systems. The problem is that the bottom tray is flimsy and the plastic was not molded well so many of the trays come with holes already showing, or will quickly develop holes with any handling. Obviously, holes in the water holding tray doesn't work. Out of the multiple systems I bought again this year, 10% had visual holes in the tray before any use, and 25% were leaking by the end of the first week. I have had to use other trays to hold the water with these systems.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

These little pots outperform the flimsy garden-store variety, and the capillary mats and pot design make healthier plants and easier management. The bright orange pots show up in the garden during transplant pickup. Finally, I like both the 2" and the 3" pots and have used both with great success. I only wish there were more 3" pots in a package!

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I had been looking for reusable plant starting pots for some time now. So far these look pretty good. I wish they were a little thicker plastic. The old square plastic pots I have are falling apart. The fact that they are round makes it easier to clean them for next year. The fact that they come in multiple sizes means I can start my seeds real early and keep moving to bigger pots as needed. The tray type watering feature prevents surface rot and makes it easier to water the plants once they have established a good root system.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

While I was able to use the 4" pots on their own, they don't sit in the tray in a manner in which they are able to reliably touch the wicking fabric below. This clearly isn't up to the standards of the APS seed starting system. Still, if you need a bunch of 4" pots for transplating/seed starting, you could do worse... even if the watering tray isn't functional for me, the pots have all been pressed into action, albeit individually and on my window sill.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

Don't waste your money. These are a GREAT idea, but they were constructed very poorly. The description says they are reuseable but the plastic is so thin, they will crack before you get to re-use them. The terra-cotta colored pots are even thinner than the black tray. The design is ideal for starting your own plants inside, but until they are constructed out of stronger/thicker materials, don't bother with them.

We haven't gotten to the fifth step but it is within sight and looking very good.

I have 7-8 of them in the 3 and 4 inch size.
The whole thing goes out with me when I'm ready to put the plants in the garden.
They stack nicely when not in use.
My pots and trays are in great shape and I'm thinking they are 4 years old.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

The product is correctly targeted toward transplanting, but I was able to use one of my clear covers from another tray and start seeds directly in these pots.

Saying that there's a water "reservoir" is a bit of an exaggeration. There are channels in the tray for extra water, but that's true of all of my seed-starting trays. The jury is still out on the capillary mat; the pots do get a little drier than I expected.

However, I absolutely love the flexibility of having each seedling in its own pot rather than being part of a 6- or 9-cell pack. I can turn each pot in its own location or move pots from the outside to the inside to make sure all of the seedlings get the right amount of light.

I'm eager to see how easy it will be to transplant seedlings from these pots to the garden. I'm sure it will be much less cumbersome than working with the cells.

    Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

This is not an especially good capillary watering system. The APS is much better. It works to a point, but constant check must be kept on it. The water tray cannot hold much water since it is so shallow. Constant check must be kept on the capillary mat just as you would check for watering with no mat. Very small plants would not pose such a problem, but the size of the pots with this setup would require much watching as the plants got larger. 3" pots can be set on the APS with the cell tray removed.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I have used the 4" (12 pot) trays before and they are great. I've now added the 3" (18 pot) tray to grow even more seedlings!
The bottom try could be a litte thicker/stronger for easier handling and longer product life. The pots are very durable.
Overall, a wonderful product I couldn't find anywhere else!

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I like everything about this item with the exception of the tray holding the pots. It is too weak to move it when full without spilling the water. It bends so it is difficult to carry. A stronger tray would make this product perfect.

I would also like to see more sizes of pots for seed starting plants that get fairly large prior to being able to transplant them outside.

What a difference between the seedlings I transplanted from these pots and the ones in peat pots. The root base on these plants were amazing! I agree, you need to add a little glue in the corners to reinforce because it will wear out some. I'm looking to add another one or two for next year.

This is where you place your seeds after you started them from seeds. The bottom of pots have holes for drainage. The package is sturdy and should hold up for years of use. They are also help when it comes to making your new plants hardy. I give mine 1/2 day of morning sun. Easy to see if the soil drys out. Great wicking action ! Would buy this again. I have 5 of these trays.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I found this pot system to be really helpful for a more novice gardener. The water mat helps to keep the dirt moist but not soggy; and stay evenly moist for many days before needing to be watered.
My major dissatisfaction with this system is that the plastic plant holder is extremely flimsy and cracks easily. It will most likely only last, with care, for a few growing seasons.
Overall I am pleased with this purchase and am thinking of purchasing additional systems for next year.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I use these great little pots for transplanting seedlings (tomatoes, peppers, all kinds of flowers) from seed starter kits. I have used them for seed starting, but they are better for transplanting. I like the 2" size best but also use the 3" pots for bigger flowers and tomatoes if they live in our little greenhouse too long. By the time the plants get into the garden, they are strong, healthy, and ready for summer! I mentioned the watering challenge; it is not as easy to tell when they need watering as with the seed-starting kits with capillary mats. This is the only disadvantage I can think of. I have bought several of these pot sets and always run short.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

When the pots are filled, the holder tears apart because it is very flimsy plastic and you can't hold it easily. The reservoir/wick design is not effective: the wick sits completely in the water reservoir, so you can only put in a little water that completely saturates the wick. If you fill the reservoir totally, the pots sit in nearly an inch of water.

These pots and the supporting bottom trays worked well. The problem is that the large tray that holds the pots themselves holds those pots too high up above the water tray. The bottom tray has to be filled to almost overflowing to reach the bottom of the pots when sitting in the intermediary tray. I have switched to just putting the pots on the watering tray and mat. It works perfectly fine and they are easier to move around,

This is basically a good design and can be used for any step from starting seeds in the small pot unit to transplants and small plant growing in the larger pots. I have personally used them to grow bib and baby romain lettuce in a modified NFT hydroponic design that I built. The main negative aspect is the very thin plastic bottom that leaks and deteriorates before the top or the pots. I also do not use the pad.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I use this product in my greenhouse, easy to move plants and keep watered. The only thing I don't like is the bottoms are thin and they get holes in them, which I found hot glue works to patch them and reinforce the corners

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

I popped my seedlings started in plugs into these pots. I will be reusing this over and over. While the product high-point is supposed to be the water mat (keeps the pots watered), that's never been a problem for me. I was looking for decent size, reusable (not peat pots), pots for my seedlings in one tray (one-tray sets are hard to find in the stores). I would like a little deeper pot, but these did the trick for my petunias.

Gardeners Supply does a good job of knowing the tools that I need to grow a successful garden. These transplant pots are a good example of that. My primary interest right now is vegetable gardening and these pots have helped grow tomatoes, peppers and squash.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

These self watering transplant pots are a gardener's best friend. They made tending my tomato starts much, much easier I no longer had to worry about how much water I was giving them. This was the first year I tried them, and I am hooked on them. My plants were the healthiest and hardiest of any I had ever started.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

Unfortunately I bought these and compared them with the APS. These were flimsier, the pots rolled all over the place and the water was quick to dry in the tray. Although these are useful and I will use them again, I would probably buy the APS over this system.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

i do like the size of pots and the arrangement, but when push came to shove, the pots did not absorb water from the base pad that i was provided [with] when i ordered this item this spring.

i would like to continue using so I will have to find a deeper reservoir for the water; an absorbable pad just does not DO it.
I would STILL recommend it with above suggestion.

    Comments about Self-Watering Transplant Pots:

Three of the pots were defective. Two had holes in the side and one had part of the top missing. It would be a great product if the pots were more durable.
