Comments about APS 24:

This is a well thought out unit. The Styrofoam insert tends to float if you fill the reservoir too high but it works great for maintaining an even soil temperature if you use a heat mat. This unit is made of durable material for it's intended use.

Comments about APS 24:

I have used APS systems for at least 15 years. I just replaced the first ones I bought this year. I have had great success starting seeds. I start vegetable and flower seeds. Something has changed with these those and they seem to hold more water in the soil then in the past. Too moist. I believe its the matting. A germinating mix in these is a must.

This APS is not only easy to use it gives you great result. I have used many different seed starting products in my 35 years of gardening and I highly recommend using the APS system, especially if you are new to gardening, its that good! The only negative is the trays are light weight and will not hold up to extend rough handling. Replacement parts are affordable and easy to order.

I'm a lazy, therefore inconsistent, waterer. The reservoir feature keeps me honest and is sure to give my seedlings the attention they require and deserve. A friend has used hers for several years now and I finally got the hint. I'll continue to add more of these to my propagation program every year.

Comments about APS 24:

Insulated polystyrene planting cups are great for those of us who must rely on windowsills for sprouting. Be careful to fill entire tray with seeds that will want to be transplanted at the same time, though, because removing a subset of the cells breaks the capillary action for the remaining cells.

I gave the APS 24 to a beginning gardening for growing greens in her office windowsill in NYC along with a packages of radish and nasturtiums seeds. In only a week she reports the seedlings are emerging. I have been using the product for years and have about 10 of them going in my greenhouse right now. I never lose a seedling to damping off because of the watering from the bottom. As you can tell, I am a fan.

Comments about APS 24:

I just love my APS 24. I have 8 that are 5+ years old and just ordered another 4. Not to replace them but because I ordered the grow light station and have more room for them.
This system holds a lot of water which helps out a lot if you work long hours. I have broken a few chunks of styrofoam out of three of them but it was more my fault as I didn't grab the bottom of the tray...I more grabbed the styrofoam and pulled it towards me instead. I've learned not to do that. When not in use they stack great in the closet. A great gift for the hard to buy for gardener.

I start all of my own plants and my success with this system is good.
My only problem is that the styrofoam trays break easily after being wet and full of soil.
The plants are easy to remove and come out of the trays clean.
I would recommend this system to anyone, but would warn them to handle gently if they are going to reuse.

Loved the water absorption mat. The water tray is large enough that when I returned from a 10 day trip, my plants still had water. Good size and easy to refill with water. The tray support makes pushing the plants out of the growth tray easy by just turning it upside down and pushing out the plants from the bottom. Great product. I will give them to family as gifts.

Comments about APS 24:

This is an easy, convenient system, but wish they would use a less toxic, recyclable material other than Styrofoam. #6 PS: Styrene can leach from polystyrene and is toxic to the brain and nervous system. It also has been found to affect red blood cells, liver, kidneys and stomach in animal studies. It is hard to recycle. So why would we want this material touching our edible plants??

Comments about APS 24:

I've used the APS 24 for years and have had great success starting seeds. The one and only negative is the styrofoam cells break down over time and cannot be replaced, unlike all the other components of the APS. The only way to acquire new cells is to buy the entire system, which is a waste as the other components are in good condition.

Comments about APS 24:

I've used various forms of the APS over the last three to four years at least once if not twice a year. A lot of the other reviews tell you everything you need to know, except for one thing. For people like me, who hate having to spend time cleaning but grudgingly sterilize b/c of damping off, cleaning the APS's is a bit of a pain. Lots of cells to get the dirt out of. And b/c it's styrofoam, there are little crevasses everywhere for dirt and algae to get into. I have to sterilize these guys in my tub in w/ bleach in order to make the whole cleaning process go faster. I've got about seven. Though the plastic parts are easy to clean. Makes me want to try those new plastic seed-starting, self-watering systems.

But other than that, great product. You quickly learn to only hold the styrofoam underneath and not the edges when it's loaded down with dirt and water; otherwise, it will crack. Other than this, I'm not very gentle with them and they've been holding up nicely. Thick styrofoam.

Have used APS for starting seedlings for years and years (15 at least). Finally had to order replacements and took a close look at others on the market. Saw nothing to compare and did not hesitate to order my new APS trays. My tomato seeds have sprouted and are growing in their new homes as I type. Terrific product! The only seeds I would not use it for are seeds such as zinnias which do not like to be continually moist. Plants that like moisture, such as tomatoes, do extremely well in APS.

Comments about APS 24:

I wish the water basin was just a touch bit wider or had a water intake lip to make adding more water a bit easier once you have your seedlings started.

However, I did find that an oil drizzle dispenser worked wonderful for this, as the nozzle is small enough to fit in between the bottom tray and support system. Also, a plastic squeeze bottle (like those for ketchup, etc.) would work just as well.

Overall...I'm ready for more of these items.

It works well in that I don't have to worry about going away for the weekend for plants that need daily watering. Aside from that the plants seem to love it and I have never had plants grow so well. The combination of the self watering soil and the planters keeps the roots at the perfect moisture and pH levels. The APS 6 is the same, but I just use 6 regular pots because the 6 combined pots are difficult to transplant individually. I have also used just the mat, stand and reservoir for three 1 Gal containers and that works great as well. Great product overall!

Comments about APS 24:

I've been using these APS for years and totally love them. They're super-duper great for those little tiny seeds that you just sprinkle on the surface because you can then put them in full sun and they'll stay watered and get enough light to both germinate quickly and then not get leggy.

I also love how I can plant my seeds and just not think about them until they're big enough to plant out. The sun warms the soil during the day and the styrofoam keeps them warm-ish all night. Just need to make sure the reservoir is full, which is only a once a week task.

I've had three that I've used innumerable times over the past 7 years so this is definitely an investment that's worth it!

These absolutely work! In every attempt, nearly every seed sprouted (I started way too many seeds thinking some wouldn't). The watering system keeps things evenly moist and I've read that watering from the bottom encourages the roots to grow strong.

Be careful trying to add heat (germination/heating pad). Tyring to bring the heat up for pepper seedlings, I let the water reservoir go empty on one (my fault) and the plastic actually warped. Also, I left the clear lid on too long and killed off some seedlings from damping off.

The seed starter box is in constant use from late winter to early spring. I could not start my seeds without it plus it means I can get an early start. One of the best features is that it is self-watering so if I have to go away for a few days I know that my starts won't dry out.
THANks for such a great product!!!

Comments about APS 24:

I've used the APS system, along with different types for many years. I recently added a few more APS vs. purchasing others. APS is the easiest of all to assemble and use and totally self-sufficient once employed. Just keep the reservoir watered. I prefer the 2" x 2" size as the smaller sometimes becomes so crowded with roots in the capillary mats that it is difficult to untangle. This system conserves space in my greenhouse and are tidy and efficient to use. My APS systems have been in use for over 20 years. The replacement parts, such as the plastic domes, are a huge plus.

Comments about APS 24:

Though I've been working with flowers and plants for several years, this year is my first attempt at a serious vegetable garden. I like the APS system because the wicking system really works -- the soil stays constantly moist without being too dry or too wet. You just check the reservoir every few days and top it up. Couldn't be easier. On the con side, it seems a little expensive for what it is (mostly plastic and styrofoam), but hopefully it will last a few years. Next time, I would opt for 12-unit over the 24 -- I made the mistake of putting tomato seeds in this one and they quickly outgrew it.

I've germinated tomatoes, eggplant, daisies, peppers, molucella laevis so far. Seeds that were old germinated well. New seeds had 100% germination rate, which is nice since starting from seed can be pretty time intensive.
Only a few drawbacks - after a season, the foam tends to break, and the plastic will warp in the sun. Would like sturdier systems and wouldn't mind paying more once than having to keep buying more.

Comments about APS 24:

The seeds grow much better in this station than in the traditional plastic seedling trays. I only have to fill it usually once per week. It keeps the cells to just the right moisture level on a consistent basis. I wish I bought this instead of my other trays. The foam is a bit flimsy but it works well to insulate the plants. And it could last for a very long time if you treat it well. You need to read the instructions carefully to put it together correctly.

I have been using the seed starter cells for quite a while. I object to the present lack of a styrofoam base for the water well. The styrofoam base was part of the setup and without it, the flimsy water well shifts and spills onto the floor. I had recommended it to my Master Gardener class with a show and tell and was embarrassed when several notified me of the discrepancy in their order. Where is the replacement item for the sturdy styrofoam frame??

Comments about APS 24:

I've never had great success with starting from seed, but decided to try the APS to see if it brought better luck. As a test I grew some seeds in the APS and some in a "regular" seed growing kit. The seedlings grew faster and heartier in the APS kit. The regular kit seedlings were leggy and thin. Every cell had a plant growing in it with the APS, with the regular kit only about 50% of the seedlings grew. I think the key to success with the APS is the mat and the water gauge (water gauge sold separately). I also recommend the Gardener's Supply Germinating Mix. Buy the APS, you won't be sorry!

The water reservoir and wicking mat work well. I fill it once a week, very easy. They have allowed me to start lots of plants with out having to keep checking moisture level, which is great.I would like the base to be a little heavier duty. I have to be careful moving them around, to not damage them, as I hope to be able to keep using them for many years. This size works well, and I would love to also get a related product with 12 cells @ 3" x3" on the same size base. 3" size cells would work better for tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, etc. I know you offer the tray with 6 cells @4"x4", but those cells are too big for most plants and I don't have enough bench space to have only 6 plants per tray. Please consider this.

Comments about APS 24:

The APS system is the best I've found for starting seeds. I tend to forget about things pretty easily, so this system is perfect for me. I can plant my seeds and remember to check on them a week later and everything does just fine! I especially like using the APS system for plants that dislike being transplanted, since I never have to struggle with getting the plant out of its cell. I can get them out easily while barely disturbing their roots.

I like that I can order replacement parts if need be, but everything's sturdy and holding up well even after a year and much time outdoors. The system is attractive when new, but after much use the styrofoam changes color and the capillary mat turns green and brown. I don't care, because it still works the same and after much use I don't expect things to be pretty. Especially with gardening items.

I have used these for years while trying other types. These are the easiest to not only propagate seeds with and grow them to transplant size, but also the easiest to transplant from. Although made out of Styrofoam, I have been able to use the same containers for years. They hold up well. I really can not think of anyway they can be improved on.

I use them with a four bulb florescent fixture that I place between a couple of milk crates. I use cool white bulbs and still get great germination and growth.

The APS-24 is very useful in starting cuttings as well as seeds. The greenhouse cover does not allow the cuttings to dry out; however, venting is necessary with some plants to eliminate mold setting in. This can be accomplished with the use of plant labels which raise the covers off the APS unit. Have had 100% success with (48) vinca, about 80% with geraniums. Also trying daisy and begonias.

Comments about APS 24:

I have six APS flats that I've used for two years. They work great to start seedlings - the plants are healthy with no die-off. You can leave home for a few days and not worry about watering!

Comments about APS 24:

Prior to discovering the APS system, I (re) used "6-packs", that previously contained flower & veggie plants I purchased, to start seedlings. The 6-packs, placed on plates or trays, were scattered throughout my home...dining room table, windowsills, etc. The flimsy 6-packs didn't hold up well to constant rotating and relocating (for example, when I had to use my dining room table). Occasionally I would forget to water the seedlings. Last year I purchased your wonderful SunLite 3-Tier Garden system, which used in conjunction with the APS system, makes it possible for me to grow my own plants in one convenient location.

Not Terribly Impressed
By Weekend GardenerVerified Purchaser from Colorado on 7/19/2008
Pros:
Lightweight
Cons:
Flimsy
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about APS 24:

I was surprised to find that the material used is styrofoam. Based on the reviews and photos, I was expecting a good quality plastic. I accidentally dropped something on tray and, as you can guess, it's now damaged. It works fine for what it's supposed to but I can't see it lasting a long time.

The APS is the only system I use for starting tomato, pepper, and various flower and herb seed. The seeds start reliably, do not damp off, grow well in the APS 24.

Comments about APS 24:

At first I got a lot of green mold or some such, and not much action, but once i took off the plastic lids I got nearly 100% germination of my heirloom tomato seeds. Far and away the best results i have had starting seedlings indoors. Only downside: though I had hoped to reuse them year after year, the styrofoam eggcrates broke apart from the light handling of moving them in and outside to harden off my seedlings. planned obsolescence? design flaw? cheap material? you decide...

Still the results i got will have me buying them again next year.

Comments about APS 24:

I have started seeds under lights with the APS units for several years. These are the best. I travel for business but I never have to worry about my seedlings drying out while I am gone. The units are also easy to cart out to the garden or to the potting area when it's time to transplant the seedlings. And units stack very neatly atop one another for storage.

My only concern is that only some parts of the unit can be purchased separately instead of requiring the purchase of an entire unit. It would be nice to be able to purchase each part of the unit separately on the rare occasion, for example, that I run over a part with my garden tractor!

Comments about APS 24:

Its easy to use, but when the plants outgrow and the garden isn't ready, than what to do? I used some of the cow pods, but than you don't know what to do with them until you can put in garden.
