I started tomatoes from seed for the first time ever this year, and because we live in Colorado, my primary concern was keeping the soil moist for germination. This product worked exactly as promised and the seedlings are almost ready for transfer.
Comments about APS 6:
These are great and perfect to use under grow lights in my basement greenhouse. They never forget to water like I do. My new plants are all healthy and just waiting for warmer weather to plant outside. Take care with the edges when moving the units as they can break off.

Tomato and Pepper plants get a better root start before planting in garden.

great next step in transplanting starter seeds

I love the size. You don't have to keep repotting.

I found this useful for growing specialty sunflowers seeds.
I was not impressed with the strength of the unit however. It could be a bit stronger by making the walls thicker with a small reduction in the capacity. I think I will only get two seasons of use from it

Comments about APS 6:
reservoir to fimlsy; doesn;t hold up like old style reservoirs
Comments about APS 6:
Prevents seedling loss from over and under watering. Teriffic for people who just can't check on their seedings daily.
Comments about APS 6:
We tried the APS system last year in various sizes to start our garden seeds. The seedlings thrived in it and it took the guess work out of watering. We purchased the APS 6 this year for our larger plants like tomatoes.
Comments about APS 6:
My original APS seed starters are over 10 years old and still work beautifully. I love not having to water my seedlings daily and also like that I can't over water them either. I would recommend these to any gardener who wants to start their own seedling.
I am growing spinach and mesclun under lights this winter in APS-6 and the results are great.

I love this size for starting melons and cucumbers. It gives the plants a great head start and I have had good success with transplanting them to the garden.
Comments about APS 6:
These worked fine for starting my tomato plants. They kept the seed/plants nice and moist. I never had to worry about watering, which is a huge plus for me.
After my tomato plants, I also used the cells for some bare root toad lilies that I bought. The APS 6 worked great for the bare roots as well. I was able to monitor the plants and make sure they started to grown some leaves before putting them in my garden. In the past my bare root plants have gotten lost or pulled because I thought they were weeds. This helped me get my plants off to a good start.
My only concern is that this was made out of styrofoam, and I don't know how long it will last. When I went to transplant my tomatoes I was worried about breaking the cells. The styrofoam is thick, so it isn't because they are flimsy. But when using my shovel to pop the plants out I was concerned that I was going to crack the cells.
It is a great system so I would recommend it, but I just wish the cells weren't styrofoam.

I bought this product to get a head-start on tomatoes, winter squashes and watermelon (zone 6). I was impressed by the vigorous growth and also used G.S. Plant Healthcare on them. The sections are very large and accommodate bigger root growth. I liked that I could fill up the water reservoir and leave them for the day in the greenhouse or patio and not worry about them drying out. Easy to transplant, the plants pop out real neat with an intact soil block around them and they went right into the ground without trouble.
Comments about APS 6:
I love all the APS units. They are absolutely the easiest and best way to start seeds. But because the APS-6 is designed for larger plants like squash, I keep having problems when it's time to remove the plants from the cells. The cells are so big that the reversed base doesn't push the dirt blocks out far enough. Tipping the unit over to coax the transplant out often results in broken leaves or stems. I'm going to try placing two thin overlaid strips of landscape fabric in the bottom of each cell before filling with dirt to give me a way to lift the transplants out when it's time. I'll let you know how that works!

All my plants survived with this. Before I used the little plastic planters and they dried out so fast. No dry out this time and I used PHC which really made them grow fast and healthy:)

Comments about APS 6:
I'm not sure what went wrong. I used the soil and the light you recommended. Initially the plants sprouted, then became spindly and entangled. All the squash plants kept breaking off and one morning I found them all wilted and dead. I used the plant food recommended as well.
Huge disappointment. It is the first Gardner's Supply item with which I was ever disappointed.

Excellent, easy to use.

This is the first time I have used the APS system. It is wonderful! Germination was almost 100% and the tomato plants grew to be some of the sturdiest heirlooms I have ever had! I will use these again and again and probably order more!
