Flower boxes in of themselves can be heavy and hard to maintain long term. I find by using this light weight planting medium I am able to easily plant and then lift the boxes into place. In the past (after running out of the Gardener's Supply product) I tried using regular potting soil. It made the flower boxes heavy to lift and the plants did not do as well because the soil didn't drain properly. I live all the way in Texas and I still buy from Gardener's Supply because I haven't found a better product yet!

In the rainy Pacific Northwest, I've found that when it comes time to empty the outdoor self-watering planters, the mix has compacted and is not reusable in the containers, as I'd hoped. However, it does work well during the season, and I add it to my outdoor raised beds for extra drainage.

I bought 3 trough planters so needed a lot of soil. Its been about 3 weeks and the plants seem to be thriving. The soil is kind of expensive but I wanted to give my new planters the best chance of success. We needed about 5 bags per planter, so wetting the soil was challenging. We started with a 5 gal pail and that was not good. We switched to a wheelbarrow, and that worked a lot better.

Makes growing veggies in Louisiana in summer possible without intensive watering. Indoor pots have needed minimal watering, reduced to once a week or two.
Works so well be particularly careful of plants that don't like overwatering.

I have used this in both my hanging and large deck pots. All are self watering. It is very light and fluffy. The bags are easy to lift and move around. It has worked very well on a deck that can be hot and dry. Many of my earlier pots looked bad because I could not keep them moist. This product has made a big difference.
The first year, I only did one hanging and one deck pot. It worked to well that I got more for the other pots the next year.
