For best seedstarting results, instead of using a fixture that's meant to illuminate the garage or workshop, use a fixture that's designed to make plants grow. Our new T-5 Light Fixture uses the latest in lighting technology with a state-of-the-art ballast. The high-output fluorescent tubes are 72% brighter than standard "shop lights", and they replicate more of the light spectrum so your seedlings and houseplants develop healthy top growth and strong root systems. Because the tubes are smaller, they require less mercury, phosphorous and glass to manufacture, and they use less electricity and last longer.

Please note: This popular Vermont-made product is currently on backorder and is expected to ship in approximately two weeks.

I started all of my vegetables and some flowers indoor this winter. The plants are as healthy as anything I could buy at a garden center. It really helps get the garden started early if you have the space to spread it all out!

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

We start our vegetable & flower gardens by seed each yr & this yr we incorporated these lights. The seedlings are much stronger & have sturdier stems because they aren't reaching for the sun. I'm glad we added this to our start up system.

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

I live in an area with few sunny days and a short summer. Starting plants indoors is a must. These lights are great. I have them set up in the basement and the seedlings are growing straight up toward the light instead of bent over toward a window!

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

The fixture is light weight and the reflector is wide and nicely designed. It appears that the light from this one fixture with two bulbs will will cover the same area as the two standard shop light fixtures (4 bulbs total) I have used in the past.Plastic film protection on the top of the reflector to prevent scratches during shipping was a nice touch. However, be sure to remove it before you turn on the lights. The lamp "user manual" is a one page sheet, with some of the worst (and humorous) instructions I have ever read. English was obviously a second, or maybe third language for the writer. Luckily it was pretty easy to assemble, although, I was nervous about damaging the bulb bracket when inserting it into the clips. Also the manual says "professional electrician is needed for safety, maintaining and checking fixture". I think that is overkill. Gardener's Supply should definitely rewrite the instructions in proper English. Also the website says that the fixture is a Vermont made product. Perhaps the reflector is made in Vermont, but the fixture brackets themselves clearly state "Made in China". Also for [$] I think that Gardeners Supply could include a couple of chains for hanging the lights.

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

bought it to start my seedlings inside. seedlings are a few weeks old and doing well. Light was easy to use. And it's cool to the touch. (I'm not worried about any fire hazard by having it on for 10 hours a day in my basement.) I don't give this a 5-star because I haven't had it long enough to judge it's effectiveness on my seedlings. But so far so good.

By Inky's MomVerified Purchaser from Manchester, CT on 3/17/2011
Pros:
Bright, Energy efficient
Cons:
Delicate
Best Uses:
Indoors
Describe Yourself:
Midrange Shopper
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

My seedlings love its bright energy efficient light which now replaces the T12 lights I had over my light table, but setting it up was a bit tricky as the T5s are very narrow and snapping them into the clips safely and securely was a bit scary. Also the connector was hard to keep connected and one light went out a few times before I was sure it was all connected securely, requiring me to take it all down on two different days to resecure both the bulbs and the connectors.

Excellent fixture for the price

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

I am happy with the quality of the fixtures and the tubes included - a very good value for the price. The instructions are pretty bad -- they don't warn you that there is only one lineup of the two fixtures that will work with the connecting wires, so figure that out BEFORE you attach them to the hood. The light output is clean and bright, and my indoor spinach is very happy.

Fine for the money, but rather skimpy
By EricVerified Reviewer from Boston, MA on 12/12/2010
Pros:
Lightweight, Quality Construction
Cons:
No hanging hardware, Poor instructions
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

For a reasonably priced T5 fixture this item is fine - very bright, lightweight but not flimsy, easy to assemble once you have figured it out. However, the instructions are poorly-written and utterly useless. Pay attention to how the wiring attaches to the fixtures and arrange them correctly BEFORE you clip them in place - I had to redo mine TWICE. Also, no hanging chains? Really? I have come to expect a bit more from Gardeners.

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

These really are an improvement over the older, heavier versions. The older ones sometimes bent the metal tabs for the chains that held up the fixture, causing it to drop onto the plants below. The newer ones spread light well and are easy to move. My plants seem to like them.

Pros:
Attractive Design, Easy To Use, Shortens Grow Time

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

I was amazed how much light is produced for such thin bulbs! And the wider cover is perfect so that I can turn the flats sideways and get four in a row.

Not worth the price!
By Always LearningVerified Purchaser from Vandalia, IL on 5/19/2010
Cons:
Difficult To Use, Poor Construction, Poor instructions
Best Uses:
Growing Herbs
Describe Yourself:
Avid Cook
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

Gardeners Supply can usually be relied upon to reccommend and sell only the best of products. This purchase was not the case. The instructions were poorly written to the point that the product could be assembled incorrectly first time 'round. The mounting was difficult, if you intend to use chain or other suspension material get ready to add considerable time to installation. (For the price you would think they could add appropriate chain.) The reflector could use some improvements in quality. Instruction #3: "Attention: Don't use fixture in high temperature or damp places." No watering for my herbs, great idea.

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

I had to wait for quite a while before this product was available. No worries - with my early ordering, it still arrived in time to start my seeds indoors. Results so far have been very good. My cabbage seeds are coming up strong, and I am confident my tomatoes and peppers will do the same once they have germinated. I live in an area where my last frost in June 1 or later, so I am still on track.

Dazzling Light for My Orchids
By Lee the Lover of BeautyVerified Purchaser from Oakton, VA on 11/11/2009
Pros:
Easy to assemble, Lots of lumens, Low power usage, Reliable long-life bulbs
Best Uses:
Restarting orchid blooms
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about T-5 Light Fixture:

I have used a gardeners supply light table for many years. The old florescent bulbs provided only enough lumens to rebloom phalenopsis orchids. The new bulbs should last longer and help more light-hungry orchid varieties to rebloom.
