Unlike a composter, a food digester lets you dispose of all of your kitchen scraps, including dairy, meat and fish scraps, bones and bread. Rather than producing compost for your garden, its purpose is to reduce household waste. Materials collect in a perforated underground basket, where earthworms and other soil organisms break them down into carbon dioxide, water and just a small amount of solid residue. Works best in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. May be used for disposal of pet waste, too.

Comments about Zero-Waste Food Digester:
I have access to more than enough compost, so I was excited to find an attractive digester that would slowly leach my kitchen scraps into a garden bed. The digester is mostly attractive and the basket is large, but what is not shown on any picture or description is that the digester has a flat unattractive side with multiple bumps, holes, and other utilitarian looking things with no obvious purpose. Non of the installation instructions refer to any part of this. I was planning on placing my digester in a fully exposed sunny flower bed, but the ugliness of the flat side compelled me to put it up against a wall where there is less sun and drainage and so it probably will not work as well as it would have. Without this blemish I would have rated it five stars. I do also wish it connected a little more firmly to it's underground basket - it uses just one fairly loose connection. Four of the same or two tighter ones would have made it a much more secure fit. Despite all this, it is still the most attractive of the few food digesters out there and it does look nice up against a wall or fence.
