The size is great. I like that we can easily access compost from the bottom. It was somewhat difficult to assemble, and the lid doesn't fit right.

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I put just about everything in it except invasive vines like morning glory and blackberry vines. This includes all kitchen vegetable waste and egg shells.

The capacity is good, although I still have weeds under tarps waiting to process :-) The front and rear door openings are better than other designs that I have used. The lid can be opened without putting down the kitchen pail I use.

I don't have anything bad to say about this unit at this point. Will it stand up to the test of time and abuse? We'll see.

Best Uses:

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

New to composting, I like the idea of being able to add new stuff to the old stuff without having a separate bin, as some composters appear. I use this in addition to my worm composter, which cannot sit outside in direct sun, rain, etc. I have spent the last 3 or 4 years researching different companies and their compost bins. I believe I have made the best choice for my needs!

verdict still out
By Tony from King of Prussia, PA on 4/14/2011
Pros:
Attractive, Capacity
Cons:
Difficult setup
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

The verdict is still out on this one. I really disliked how the pre-drilled holes did not line up when placing the screws, so I had to "rig" it to stay together. I did do my research before purchasing, and saw that others had this same problem, so I can't say I'm 100% surprised. I was just hoping I wouldn't have the same issue. I hope it works much better than it assembled.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I know it said to have a second person handy to help during assembly, however I decided to start before my granddaughter got off the schoolbus. I had it completed and in position before she arrived.

I've only had it a month so I can't comment on speed of composting.

The lid does not seem to stay up as in the the description.

Best Uses:
Composts EVERYthing
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I'm using the composter as a worm bin. My old vermiculture bin was awkward and it really didn't control smells well. I was concerned that the Pyramid Deluxe wasn't going to be big enough -- it is about 10% smaller than the old (awkward, smelly) one. Boy was I surprised! I don't know if it's the shape, the aeration, or the extra heat absorbed by the black plastic, but my worms are tearing through everything we feed them faster than I've ever seen. I should have a new batch of worm poo for my garden in a couple of weeks.
The assembly instructions recommend that you have two people to assemble the Pyramid Deluxe. It *can* be assembled by one person, but two would have been WAY better.

Not a Long Term Solution
By Celeste from New York on 3/9/2011
Pros:
Capacity
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate, Not rodent proof, Pervasive Odor
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Bought this 2 years ago with the rodent screen. After the first summer, the rats had tunneled under the screen (which is slightly smaller than the units footprint) and managed to push it aside. I put a layer of chicken wire down under the unit and above the screen, which then the rats chewed through the plastic in the back. If you have a lot of rodents in your area, this is not the item for you.

Good engineering and structure, but don't try to put it together without a drill. Even "squeezing" it together with force, holes often did not line up easily. Was often easier to drill matching holes.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Five years I've had this. It was difficult to assemble, the lid blows off in the wind without a rock on it. I've had very little compost and I had the recommended blend of green, brown, etc, and even additive. Difficult to aerate, door won't open because it's all settled down and packed. I had to get my husband to push it over to get any compost out, and there was very little compost. Five years and I've haven't had much. Save your money and build your own.

Enormous disappointment!
By Dusty's MomVerified Purchaser from La Grange, Illinois on 7/20/2010
Cons:
Defective construction
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

This would have been my first attempt at composting, and I was so eager to receive and start using my new compost bin. I am hugely disappointed to learn that my "deluxe composter" is poorly constructed. Specifically, my husband struggled for two hours to assemble it, but because the predrilled holes (for placing the screws to hold the bin together) were not aligned, he needed to force the holes close enough to allow the screws to go through. Doing this, however, meant the bin was not square and the door wouldn't operate properly, so I am forced to return the composter. This presents another hassle because the box is huge and heavy and I will need someone to help me haul it to a UPS store to ship it back. I expect top quality from Gardeners Supply products but this experience has been an enormous disappointment.

Disappointment
By Soil Biology MilitantVerified Purchaser from Ithaca, NY on 7/15/2010
Cons:
Flimsy, Leaks, Pervasive Odor
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

This is vastly overpriced, for materials that cost maybe $15. The front and back doors can be pushed in easily by wild animals or fall open by themselves. I drove steel posts in to anchor the composter so it won't be pushed over. The little posts offered with the composter for a high price would be less secure. It is less of an eyesore than the fence we had before, so that is a plus. But so far we have not seen any compost or any separation as advertised. Maybe that feature will materialize and I will be happier with this.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Great replacement for an improvised compost bin. I had very little trouble assembling it, and it makes my yard look a lot neater. I am going to really appreciate the doors at bottom to remove the finished compost.

Disappointment
By Deb in TexasVerified Reviewer from Garland, Texas on 6/25/2010
Pros:
Odor Free
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate, Flimsy, Needs Solution Added
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

This sounded like a great idea, but we've been very disappointed in its performance. It's flimsy, as in the front slider/door won't stay on its tracks once the bin is filled (bulges out and pops the door off its too-shallow grooves), and a squirrel ate a hole through the lid quite easily in a few hours. So much for paying extra for the rodent screen on bottom. It composts s-l-o-w-l-y compared to a more shallow pile that can be easily aerated. Might be fine for leaves and grass clippings, but not for a kitchen/yard compost bin.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I liked this composter so much I bought another one. Assembly of the first one went easily but I had a lot of trouble getting the lid on the second one. Once it's together it works very well. It keeps the raccoons and rodents out of the kitchen scraps and I can hardly keep it full, composting goes so quickly in warm weather.

Best composter I've had (I've gone through 3 different composters over 20 years). There aren't any small parts required in its construction, so nothing to pop off or break over years of use. I love the rainwater holes in the top. I like the brown color; more earthy than the usual black. I use it for all my kitchen scraps, alternated with leaves and other lawn waste.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Been composting for 20 years so have gone through many bins. This one has worked fine for us, AFTER we built an internal frame of wood slats, bolted to the plastic, to make it solid enough to actually fill it more than half full. Otherwise, the sides bulged and eventually popped out. Not everybody might want to take the time or have the skills to do this. We did so because we liked many of of the other features, like the hinged lid. We live out in the country so it's important to us that the lid not blow away - we have a couple of bricks on the top of the lid of our other compost bin for that purpose. And yes, the lid will sometimes pop out of its hinges - but it's easy to pop it back on. It is not rodent-proof - so what? Just toss the mice out when you clean it out first time in the spring.

I was disappointed with the quality of the plastic material used in the construction of this composter--i.e., thin and extrremely pliable. Frankly speaking, I don't feel the unit was worth the selling price you're asking for the unit.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I have had one of these composters, an earlier model, for at least ten years, and it has been very satisfactory for taking care of kitchen scraps and garden waste. I have not followed instructions about putting in certain ingredients in a certain order; it's essentially a vegetable waste bin, and once or twice a year I open the bottom and get a nice batch of compost. Perfect. That's why I bought a second one. I have learned that citrus peels take longer than other elements to decompose and that sticks persist, so I avoid them. This new bin is just a bit larger than the first, and its one design weakness is that the snap-in hinge at the back of the lid often comes out of position, so I have to be careful in opening it.

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

The assembly definitely requires two people. There is no bottom, just casing & a lid, so we covered cardboard with a trash bag & fit it in as a bottom to contain everything we throw into it, otherwise it would be on the pavers. It's been about a month & nothing has composted yet. There is minimal odor, until the lid is lifted. While there are no openings other than slits on the sides for ventilation, the Lizards like to hang out in there. We look forward to getting compost hopefully soon.

Mainly as a waste disposal for kitchen and garden waset. The size, assembly, looks, ease of use are great. I think side removal doors would be better than front and back. That way you could put it up against a wall or fence and not have to have it open from the side.

So far so good, but watch the rodents!

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

So far so good. We haven't had it long enough to have compost, but we do have some issues. Reading the prior reviews carefully, we bought some wire screen from the hardware store instead of purchasing the rodent screen for salee on the site, because most reviewers agreed it was too small. That worked fine. We put it in first and put the scraps on top of that. What we didn't anticipate were squirrels enlarging one of the holes on top for entrance to their gourmet meal. We had some leftover wire screen and have now cut and installed it across the top, beneath the lid. Because the wire screen we bought and cut to fit is sharp and rigid and has to be removed each time, dropping in compost is harder now. However, it seems to have thwarted the rodents. So the bottomline is that Gardeners Supply needs to enlarge the bottom screen to perfectly fit the bottom and create a top screen to do the same thing. If they'd do that, I'd toss my sharp wire screens and buy the new products ASAP.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

The top warped and will not stay on the hinge when I open it. It it very annoying to have the top come off the hinges every time I open the composter. It is much more difficult to get it back on the hinges to close it.
I have to keep the cover on with heavy rocks on all four corners.

I was so upset when I pulled baby rats out of the bottom of the composter with my garden claw. Parents had chewed a hole in the back top near the edge.

It was simple to assemble and looks attractive in the yard.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

The assembly instructions are poor but assemply is not too bad. The parts came dirty as if they had been stored outside (rain and dust)--strange. One of the parts was a little crooked. Since I am a beginer I expected it to have a bottom. Beware...there is no bottom. This presented a problem for us because once we got started we did not believe that we could move it. It does not look too sturdy but so far it has held pretty well (we have had several severe storms, with winds and hail--the lead never blew open).

To start: I had to get a replacement for one of the panels. [...]I set the composter off of the ground. It is sitting on 4 by 4 of chicken wire and pig fencing. Oh the wire was placed on 5 brick. This will allow good air circulation. I fed my composter Alfalfa hey, grass clipping, coffee grounds, shredded news paper and paper bags. I layered brown and green. So far it seems to be working fine. I will add more when I get my first batch.

This composter seems very sturdy and has a large capacity. Fairly easy to stir contents with shovel to aerate. Had to use some from my own supply to replace faulty ones. Also definitely required 2 people to assemble. Directions were minimal.

This is the third composted I've had. The first one was made of wooden slats and lasted forever. Last year, we "upgraded" to a newer plastic composter. When it got cold this winter, the plastic lid cracked right off. This new one is very sturdy & was easy to assemble. I like that it is brown--it blends into the landscape better than black. I've only had it for a month, so have yet to see how it survives the winter.

Read the Reviews to be Prepared

Pros:
The idea is great
Cons:
Not the easiest to assemb
Best Uses:
Not composted yet
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

PLEASE READ THE REVIEWS on this composter, so that you are prepared for possible assembly challenges. For some it was easy, for others not. I fall into the latter category - this product does not appear to have a consistent quality.

Gardener's Supply was wonderful and sent me new panels when I could not get the lid on - but the holes were not drilled to match on 2 of the new panels - so redrilling and several extra hours were required. Letting it sit in the sun and then using a lot of force finally got the lid on, but I am waiting to see how the lid does in a high wind. It does not latch well.

(Thanks to the 2 reviewers who mentioned drilling holes in the back hinge area and bolting the lid on. That and drilling a hole for a front latch is my back-up plan.)

I have yet to compost with this composter but it seems from the review that composting goes well. It is just the assembly that can be a challenge.

I put it together by myself and it is doable, but 2 people would definitely make it easier and give you someone to vent to if you have trouble! :) (Be sure to do one of the side panels LAST so the sliding doors can be installed.

Using sun-warmed (block) paraffin on the sliding doors and in the grooves seems to help the doors slide better.

. . . and don't forget to consider buying or making a rodent screen if you have critters to contend with.

(A "bottom line" review is required, so I am not recommending it until I actually have tried the composting part - because of the assembly, the fact that the rodent screen does not fit well, and the aerator tool catches on the inside of the composter. I bought wire screen in the hardware store to make my own rodent screen.)

I will resubmit a review once I see how the composting goes.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Our composter arrived yesterday. After reading some reviews and the complaints related to the assembly, I read ALL the reviews twice, excerpted and highlighted the concerns and suggestions, and allocated the better part of the afternoon for the assembly, hoping to finish by sundown. The assembly proved trivial. I could have done it without any printed directions. I suspect that less than 10 minutes of actual labor was needed. The only need for a second person was to balance the first side panel and back panel - and a preschooler would have been sufficient. Of the many things I have ordered over the Internet and assembled myself in conjunction with our recent purchase of a second home, this was probably the easiest and quickest to assemble. I had other concerns related to keeping the lid in place. It took just the right amount of force to push it over the attachment knobs; I can't imagine the wind being able to dislodge it. Similarly, the decomposable bags provided with the kitchen compost container mean that the lid can be lifted with the hand not needed to carry the bag from the kitchen to the composter. When I asked my petite wife if she wanted me to provide a mechanism for propping the lid open, she saw no need. I respect the other reviewers and appreciate their comments, but I was unable to duplicate their assembly and lid retention/operation problems.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I purchased this as a gift for my mom & dad. It's an okay system for first time compsting. What I don't like is the top. It fits poorly and blows off easily. Living in the Northeast we get many windy storms and it broke very soon after set-up. A new top was sent free of charge and we installed bolts at each corner to create a hinge. This has worked well. Unfortunately, Gardeners Supply was not receptive to our feedback that the design has a flaw. They even included it in a note with the new top! I'm disapointed that they needed to make such a point. If you do purchase this item, be sure to install the bolts. You'll be glad you did!

Pros:
Capacity
Cons:
Assembly Difficult, Difficult to Aerate
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Assembly took a long time and pieces did not fit properly. I read that others had trouble fitting the top on. i found that the instructions tell you to put it on backwards. After I filled it, the doors kept popping off because the sides did not fit together properly making the sides too wide to hold them in.

i found it difficult to turn and aerate the material inside because it became compacted. this also made it difficult to get the finished product out. Material in the corners did not compost well because it was hard to turn. the door are hard to get into, four sides would be much better.

I finally replaced it with the much simpler three-bin wire enclosure.

Warps over time
By Bedford gardenerVerified Reviewer from Bedford, NY on 2/21/2009
Pros:
Capacity, Easy Assembly, Odor Free
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Ecological Waste Disposal, Fertilizer Production, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I have had my composter for 4 years and though it does a good job there are two major drawbacks. One is that the lid does not stay open easily, and is apt to fall on my head as I am trying to empty the kitchen pail. The second is that the bin has warped at the bottom, bulging out so that the sliding door pops out unless I wedge it diagonally.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I've had many compost systems, from worm bins, to tumblers, to biostacks. After 3 months with the deluxe pyramid, I think that I have found the best. It is difficult to put together and really is a 2 person job. I couldn't have done it without my son. I needed to add hardware cloth to the bottom to prevent rodents from entering. If compost bin is positioned on a slight incline, the lid will stay open while you add materials and shuts tightly when closed. If I had three of these, my three year composting system would be complete.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I use this product for all kitchen scraps, coffee, tea, juices, and liquids from cooked vegetables, mulched leaves and brush, added straw if organic. I love it because it decomposes quickly, takes up little space. I put kitchen scraps in my blender with purified water before pouring on the compost pile, and it speeds up the decomposition. It is important to turn the pile well in the corners, and make sure it is moist enough there, also.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I purchased this unit because it seemed to have the most capacity - it is as large as the article claims - very easy to assemble and to use - too soon to tell how it fast it will make finished compost - but it's generating heat and so far, everything looks good. I'll have to see how easy/difficult it is to aerate after awhile - but, for now, it's just right. If it works as well as I think it will - i'll purchase another one - I have a very large yard and generate lots of green waste.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

In addition to gardening as a hobby I do fine carpentry, so I am fairly handy. Assembling this thing was reasonably annoying until putting the top on. The unit is too wide for the top, requiring finagling and banging with a soft rubber mallet.

While trying to jimmy the top in place my finger was torn to shreds, getting blood all over the place. I am disappointed - I need a second composter and this unit looked great. At this point I'm going to need to return it as the top is not the right size.

I have three composters. this one has been the sturdiest most foolproof. The rotating composter worked faster but broke twice. The rodent screen is a particularly nice add on. I don't have to worry about finding something in the bin I don't want! Top is large enough to turn material and seams are sturdy enough it hasn't split apart like one of my other composters.

I have always had a large designated "compost area" at all our properties; but having downsized for retirement created a problem since the garden area was also much smaller and I didn't want to offend neighbors with an unsightly or smelly compost heap. This composter seems to be the perfect solution! It went together easily and seems more rugged than some I've seen on the market. I look forward to putting it to the test!

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

We just started composting this past week so we can't speak to the speed or quality of compost this unit produces. We chose this composter after a lot of research and think it will produce a good product for our needs. However, the lid really needs some redesign as it falls completely off the unit when raised or, alternatively, falls back on the hand of the person adding materials. After the first two times the lid fell on my hand or fell off the composter, my civil engineer husband created an item to keep the lid raised while I dump in the weekly kitchen veggie refuse but for the price I don't think we should have to reinvent this particular wheel. Having read previous reviews we were somewhat prepared for this issue but think some small re-engineering could eliminate this major nuisance.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I have a vegatable garden and flower garden, I'm tired of buying compost material every yr. so I decided to purchase this composter. It is the right size for me and easy to use. I just bought it in October, so all my autumn leaves will be put to good use. By the time spring rolls around, I will have Black Gold dirt. I can't wait.
The only thing I would suggest, to improve it would be the lid. Could use a hinge, to hold it up. Two people need to put it together also. Other then that, I love it!

The holes on the last panel did not lign up. We spent a whole afternoon trying to put it together, following all the instructions but it would not work. Also, it looked like it had been shipped and tried somewhere else before as the panels were quite dirty. I think the company should look for another manufacturer. This product gives them a bad name.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I really like most things about this except the lid, which is a very big thing. The lid is supposed to hold tight to the back large tabs to allow it to stay on and to stay open. However, it always pops off. The lid was warped somewhat, as were all the pieces, so it is difficult to keep the lid tightly shut. I will need to modify this composter to make it fully functional and secure. Disappointed, but glad to be composting now.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Composter assembled easily. Ours is at the rear of the garden against a fence so we haven't had a problem with the lid flying off. We received our composter at the end of summer because the unit was on backorder, so nothing inside the composter has broken down yet. We'll see what happens in spring when temperatures rise again. We were accustomed to aerating our previous composter with a pitchfork, so this doesn't seem different to us. I agree that the rodent screen should be a part of the package.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

At the moment I have only one of these set up - I'm looking to add a second and maybe a third. I've had it now for three or four years, and have come to the conclusion that it would be perfect if some of the side vents were opened up - it seems like increasing the airflow a bit would help matters greatly.

The assembly is easier with two people, but that's more a matter of size and convenience. You could probably struggle through it with one person, but two make it easier for propping parts up, holding things steady, and so forth.

Keeping it aerated is no more difficult than any other bit of organic matter confined in a cube-like form. It does take some strength and effort to do so, but it will compost with or without additional help - it's just a matter of time. Turning with a fork works well enough for a low pile or the top portion of an existing pile. A winged compost turner gets in there and can pierce down into the bottom of the pile to fully aerate it - the only difficulty is when the wings hang up on the side of the bin; if you're mindful of this, the hangup can be easily avoided.

I recommend this product to my customers.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I thought the assembly of this composter was pretty easy. The key to assembling this unit is to have the correct sized socket wrench. (It would be nice if the manufacturer would have included the socket wrench like IKEA does when you buy furniture from them.) Anyway, it took me about 20 minutes to assemble the unit by myself. The unit is nice and sturdy, and the cover fits tightly. I use this composter for kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, and garden waste.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

As we have had NO rain since I assembled this easy-to-use composter and we are under strict water-restrictions, my compost has been drier than may be recommended. The easy-to-lift lid makes the task of composting kitchen scraps simple. My ratio of "green" to "brown" is way high on the nitrogen scale so my compost has a pungent odor. My kitchen scraps attract palmetto bugs and ants, but the rodent screen on the bottom keeps the rats out. My yard is tiny, so this composter is a very neat option to the open bin made of farm fencing I had been using.

My compost bins are homemade. I live on a heavily wooded subdivision lot that is a little less than an acre. My bins are an attractive home to both a type of venomous snake and food for them. A snake saying hello when I opened my garage door one night made me order the enclosed bins. I have not yet used them long enough to judge. I ordered two and one was missing the assembly hardware but I am sure Gardener's Supply will send it when I notify them. The bins seem sturdy and appear better made than other models I have seen. I would like a larger capacity but I think they are as large as most of the industry standard. I wish there were aeration holes or slits up all the way on the sides.

Easy to Use
By Compost GuyVerified Reviewer from Rural Virgiinia on 8/27/2008
Pros:
Capacity, Easy Assembly, Good for "lazy" gardeners
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

It is hard to turn (I had no luck with the aeration tool),but it works fine with kitchen waste, grass and leaves. I fill it up in the Spring and summer, leave it alone over the winter, and next spring it's pretty much done. I use grass clippings instead of store-bought activaters.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I purchased this at the Intervale store while on vacation in VT; I'm a big fan of the looks of this composter and I was willing to cram it into my car with vacation luggage and a dog.

I am not however a fan of how it assembles. Once we got home, it took two people to put together the first time. The directions were fine but the plastic is quite rigid and inflexible. The side panels were so warped that they were both out of alignment by at least an inch. It was physically impossible to fit the lid to the top.

I wound up partially dissassembling the unit and redrilled a couple of holes to attach the panels better. With much brute force including sitting on the sides to force it into square shape the composter is now acceptable. This second effort took an additional two hours.

I solved the lid/hinge problem by drilling holes and inserting 2 2-inch bolts through the hinge "pins". Now my composter lid is nicely attached.

This will ultimately be a nice addition to my garden. I would give this unit a higher review if there was more attention to detail in the machining of the plastic parts. I don't think they fit together particularly well. It should not have taken me so long to put together.

My husband and I had no problem putting the composter together. I have it down by my gardens and am just waiting for my compost. No one understands how excited I was to get this item. It sure seems like my throw-away trash is getting less and less. I feel good that I am doing something for the environment and for my gardens. I can hardly wait for the compost to come out of it. I plan to get another one next year.

I Use This Composter Every Day
By FoodworkerVerified Purchaser from San Leandro, California on 7/16/2008

Cons:
Doors top stick a little
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

I add vegetable scraps, rinds from fruit trees, cage paper from pet birds, leaves, soft vegetation from yard. I'm older, so like the "add to top, remove compost from bottom door" a little at a time, with no heavy shoveling nor pushing of a drum. It takes several months, but the compost is rich & good. I put composter in the sun with access to rain. The top hinge and side doors stick a little, but I can handle it. We have a county recycling program which takes branches, weeds, and diseased plants but this unit takes the rest!

Large Capacity Composter
By Novice GardenerVerified Purchaser from Sand Lake, NY on 7/15/2008
Pros:
Black plastic, Capacity, Good size for yard, Has a tight fitting lid, Top prevents odors
Cons:
2 people to assemble, Doors are hard to slide, Hinged top falls off
Best Uses:
Fruit Rinds, Kitchen scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Getting Started
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

This is our first composter. Our Kitchen scraps, and leaves are the bulk of what we put into our composter.

Pro: It was light enough to move around. The black plastic absorbs light well. Keeps odors inside the bucket. The lid fits tight when in place.

Con:It took 2 people to assemble it adequately. It needs a "stay-open" hinge. If you open the lid too far it falls off, yet you need two hands to dump a bucket of kitchen scraps so you can't hold the lid and dump the bucket at the same time. If the lid were attached to the composter at the plastic "hinge" areas it wouldn't fall off and if there was a way of "propping" it open, it would be more convenient.
A little more detail to the design would increase my rating.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

Think this will end up being a good product, but not used to it yet - am still learning the how to best use the composter.

It has been a very wet season here, so the compost is quite wet, and am working on ways to dry it out. It's almost ready to be harvested, but is too wet. The true test will be when I harvest it. It does seem to compost rapidly

It was not that easy to assemble.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

This is my first try at composting. Upon reading the description in the catalog I felt that this would be the easiest way for our family to decrease what we were putting out into the garbage. I am happy to say that we have reduced our kitchen trash and have started to get to the final stage in the compost cycle. The pyramid top has keep the pile from getting too wet with all of the rain we have had since mid May. Looking forward to being able to use the compost in my vegetable garden. I have also noted an increase in the worms in that area of the yard.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

The bin is large and substantial; the plastic is heavier than many of the bins I looked at so it appears it will last for a long time. It also was a decent price compaired with many others of similar quality. I assembled it myself which was tricky; it would have been easier with 2 people as recommended on the instructions, but it is possible for 1 person to do it.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

It was difficult to assemble because the plastic is/was far too rigid and inflexible. If the pieces didn't have some warp to them, it may be okay to have material this inflexible. Unfortunately, they need to bend in order to "snap" together.

Even with a city green bin garbage can and a mulching lawnmower we were inundated with garden waste. Not any more! I put kitchen waste, leaves, and small garden waste into the bin. I loved my composter so much I bought one for my mom.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

OK, so I bought my first deluxe pyramid composter From Gardener's Supply Company over 10 years ago--mostly because I wanted to do my bit environmentally: put vegetable scraps in the compost rather than adding to the trash. I never expected it to produce usable compost because I had no intention of spending a lot of time turning it or adding special accelerants or fussing. Imagine my surprise when I opened the bottom door after a year and discovered a pile of nearly black, gorgeous rich soil. So, when I bought a new place, I bought another deluxe pyramid composter. And we've just moved again and bought a third. (Leaving the composters on each property, I feel like I've become the Johnny Appleseed of composting.) I have used them in urban to incredibly rural settings and I swear by these things. I now garden much more extensively and I still almost never turn the compost (maybe I jam a pitchfork in lazily 2-3 times a year) although I do add a cup of peat moss every so often and this beautifully little miracle worker just keeps going. The 2nd and 3rd ones I bought are better designed than the first one but even that one's still in use and showing no signs of wear. I do not put meat or bones in my compost but have never had any racoons, bears, skunks, etc. get into any of them. (I confess that I do have a groundhog that has been excavating behind my newest one and dragging out eggshells and other goodies but I think 8-12 inches of buried hardware wire will probably put an end to that.) In short, I cannot recommend this product highly enough. I seriously believe that everyone (regardless of whether you're a gardener or not) should have one of these. At the very least, this product offers one easy step to living more gently on our planet.

Comments about Deluxe Pyramid Composter:

This is my third deluxe composter from Gardener's Supply. I love them! This composter breaks down grass, leaves, and household scraps in a week or so. Mine is in full sun and I turn it a couple times a week. I love the new flip top. My older model does not have it and it always blows away. My only complaint is sometimes it's difficult to get the bottom door open to get the compost, especially if you tighten the side bolts too tightly during assembly. It holds just enough for an avid gardener. I have 3 so that I can rotate use.
