Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I bought the Tumbler because I am renting a home. It takes up little space, can be moved and was not too ugly. I have been using the tumbler to make soil using leaves and other yard waste and some food prep scraps. I have mixed green and brown and also added a small amount of steer manure. I live in the Pacific Northwest and we have had an unusually wet year. The frame of the Tumbler has rusted so if the landlord does come by, it now looks like junk. I found the Tumbler very hard to turn when loaded. I learned quickly that the lid lets in rainwater so I have to remember to leave it turned with the door facing the ground or the compost gets too wet. As the stuff decomposed the turning action tended to wrap things up into leaf-covered balls. I chopped up the balls and added starter after 3 months hoping to speed up the process and it has taken over 6 months to get anything I can use. I would not recommend this product.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

With two stationary composters already in place and active, we were looking for something that would make mixing our collections a bit easier - the tumbler was it! It was easy to put toghether (although don't do it in your living room!) and we were able to put it to work right away!

Jury is still out
By Weed WomanVerified Purchaser from Louisiana on 4/25/2011
Pros:
Attractive, Capacity, Compact design, Odor Free
Cons:
Door can be hard to open, One bolt hole misaligned
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fall Leaves, Fertilizer Production, Flower arranging debris, Fruit Rinds, Grass clippings, Leaves & Brush, Vegetable peelings

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

My husband & I assembled this on 1st April 2011 and filled it by 12th April 2011, mostly with Fall leaves that we had stored in perforated plastic bags.We also added the Compost starter. We rotate the drum every few days and add water each week. Twelve days later, 24 April as expected we are still waiting for the finished compost, so we can not yet fully judge the efficiency of this composter.
We do have about eight other static composting units but they reach capacity quickly during the Fall season, so we are hoping that this rotary composter will speed up the process for a portion of our compost load.

A great "help"for a small garden....
By English gardener WendyVerified Purchaser from Olympic Peninsula, Washington State on 4/12/2011

Cons:
Hard to turn
Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I started out with some good soil, some mulch, green additions, and, of course, my composting pail from my kitchen - usually emptied daily into the composter. Of course I also added the "hot" starter I bought at my garden store - and some water - then I was off. No odor, everything is breaking down rapidly, and it looks as if I'll have compost within 6 weeks or so. My one problem is with turning the barrel, even my husband finds it difficult, it is heavy now and very hard to turn, especially as I have arthritis..... any suggestions? Other than that, it's great for our new garden, I'm not missing my big compost bin!

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I should go back and add more comments after we've been using this composter for a while BUT we just got it and I'm new to this type. Usually my partner just uses a big can in the backyard but I wanted something a little 'fancier'! I can tell you it is very sturdy [he agrees and he's very skeptical of anything 'ordered'!] and pretty easy to put together [I'm a 5'2" woman so my arm span isn't huge and I could do 99% of it- I just needed him to reposition the 2nd angle bolt and tighten all the nuts!]. I think so far it is a good buy for the cost and well worth the investment. It is easy to turn which will be important for me.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I waited two years before writing a review of this product as I wanted to be fair. I can report that, after two full seasons, I have less than one quart of usable compost! The product assembled okay but the sliding door is difficult to open or close. It is difficult to rotate. It will not compost anything that has not been reduced to less than one half inch in size. It dries out quickly and generally does not compost anything more than my temper.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I purchased this composter last year. My father was an avid gardener, he composted and always had a beautiful garden so I wanted to give it a try plus I liked the idea of being more green and recycling organic material and yard clippings instead of using chemical fertilizers. This composter was the right size for me and the price was right. It was easy to put together and it's easy to aerate the contents, just give it a turn or two every now and again. I wasn't very lucky with my compost last year, it just didn't break down enough; but I think that was more my fault than the composters fault. It wasn't in an ideal location (in sun), and I think if I had added the superhot compost starter my compost would have broken down better. But I still used my compost anyway and my flowers were fine!!! Except for not being that attractive (which doesn't affect how it works) the only thing bad about it is the frame... it will rust. I even put mine up on a wooden pallet to keep it off the ground hoping it wouldn't rust. I just noticed last week while moving it to it's new location for this year(in the sun), is that the bottom of the frame is rusting, but that's okay I'll just think of some kind of frame I can build to put it up on when the time comes (I'm handy that way)!!! Other than that, there's nothing else wrong with this composter, it's a great little composter for the beginner!!!

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

We have three composters in our yard - soon to be two. The wire composters from Gardener's Supply are awesome, and the discontinued Biostack from Smith and Hawkin is fabulous. This composter, however, was a complete disaster. It's disgusting - the door sticks in chilly weather (and freezes in cold weather). The compost leakes out and makes a mess, which hardly inspires one to utilize the thing. The WORST was the smell! It really smelled like rotting garbage and sewage - it didn't matter how many browns I added, or how much I turned the thing. It was foul. (And my other two composters work great, so it can't be 100% user error!) I finally dumped it out, sprayed it out and am giving it away. For [$] you have SO MANY good choices. Don't go for this one.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Bought this two years ago. I have NO trouble with the door. Odor is low if you mix per instructions (put a little dirt in with compost if it starts to smell). Perfect for my small garden/small family. I compost with this all year, then, in fall, mix with leaves in a larger compost pile. By spring it makes my garden very happy. Legs could be sturdier, but has done well with my frequent moves for mowing.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This is a great composter for the price. In fact, we are buying our second one, so we can have different stages of compost. We've had the first one for over a year and it works great! We added compost accelerator, but it doesn't take long for beautiful compost. No smells, no critters. Lid is a little hard to slide, but lubricant would work. I use a rubber mallet if it's too hard to move. We've had it out all summer and winter and summer again and it still works fine.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I just gave this composter away...hopefully they can get it to work better. The holes in the sides allowed too much water in and I always had clumps of smelly rot, not nice compost. I'm going back to my old reliable old-fashioned bin! Wish this worked...I did love the concept of just giving it a spin rather than turning with a pitchfork.

I love this composter. It's just the right size for our family and for our yard. It was easy to assemble and easy to use and I'm looking forward to the compost from it. The only concern I have is that the legs are beginning to rust - but maybe that is not a big deal (?). Regardless, I'd recommend this product!

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

The small size is a plus for low-volume gardeners. the price was attractive. However the sliding door does NOT slide. I am a reasonably strong healthy woman, but it takes both arms, one leg and a strong back to open the composter's door. And to shut it. And what happens when the unit is in the hot sun? The cold winter air? If the barrel expands or contracts with temperature fluctuations, I am sunk. Shipping the item back was not an option for me as the cheapest method was well over $50.00. I will try to jerry-rig the door but it irks me to have to modify a product I paid good money for.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Assembled in less than 1/2 hour without my husbands help. Haven't had it long enough to produce compost yet but did not add compost starter, so anxious to see how long it will take. Easy enough to turn. Wish it held more but then it would be difficult to turn. Have alot of leaves and clippings from last fall and this spring so probably could use about 10 more tumblers but will wait to see how this one does before buying another one - maybe next spring.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This composter is light, easy to assemble, great for the price and easy to move. I assembled it on my deck and moved it to the yard because of the drainage holes. I'm waiting for my first batch of compost. I added the compost accelerator to it but so far it hasn't really turned to usable compost so I'm waiting. It's also pretty easy to spin but you need some upper arm strenght. Overall, I'd recommend it.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

The composter stands in the corner of my fenced-in kitchen garden in the sun. It was easy to find a place for it, as it is a nice size and a simple design. I did read all the reviews of this product before buying it, so knew to assemble it on a level surface and place it as level as possible. The stand appears to be flimsy, but is not, and does support a fair amount of weight, and allows for easy turning of the container. I have not had it long enough to know how much time is required for materials to break down completely. The door slides easily in warm or cold weather. If it didn't, I would apply some grease or vaseline.

My one concern was that two small holes were in the lid and on one ridge, apparently made during the heating process for the shipping wrap. They do not pose a problem, but the price of this product is such that more care should be taken. Overall, I am very happy to have this composter!

Good Product

Attractive, Capacity, Composts Quickly, Easy Assembly
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fertilizer Production, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I needed a composter that didn't take up much space and portable, to move around. This worked perfectly. If it had wheels or just two wheels on one side to roll it on it would be even better. I have a yard where the sun shines at different places and at different times. With this I can move it like a sled to where there is plenty of sun and when guests are over, I can move it to a place of convenience. I found it easy to assemble IF you make sure the metal frame is fastened correctly. If the frame is not even when on the ground, the tumbler will not fit. All I needed to do was switch two of the metal sections to do that once I saw what the problem was, the tumbler went on perfectly. Sturdy plastic and easy to use. I expect my first batch of compost very soon, we get a lot of sun in Los Angeles.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

If the frame were stiffer, or user advised up front (as in the ads) that a level area (size here) be established, it would be much more effective. As it is the frame is torqued and the drum gets lodged in it and prevents turning. Not good

Cons:
Required plastic grinding

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This is a well-built, easy to set up composter. It turns easily and has a good capacity for kitchen and garden scraps, but is too small for yard composting. The only initial problem was the thick plastic moldings where the drum and hatch fit together were not precise, and I had to grind down about 1/2 inch to make the hatch slide easily. In winter, you may need to whap the hatch with a small sledge to crack the ice and move it, but the plastic is tough enough and maleable enough to take it.

Not that good
By MLSVerified Reviewer from Hebron, IN on 1/2/2010
Pros:
Easy Assembly
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Ecological Waste Disposal, Fertilizer Production, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

First, it is very easy to assemble - no rocket science needed here or brawn.

The first batch worked very well with a small amount of grass clipping and kitchen scaps but the next kept too much condensation trapped inside and just made a mush. Keeping the top off did not help at all after dumping the mush then cleaning and drying it and restarting a new batch. And - YES the vent holes were clear.

So anything that has any moister content should be kept out. Then very carefully control what you place in this and monitor the moisture content.

instructions poor, cheap hardware
By KelsoVerified Reviewer from Austin, TX on 12/26/2009
Describe Yourself:
Getting Started

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I just finished assembling this and although I'm pretty handy and mechanical, it wasn't good. The instructions are poor, hard to distinguish between similar frame pieces caused it to be trial and error until after 3 times I finally got it right. Should have taken 10 minutes but took around 30. The bolts for assembling the frame are poor quality, especially considering the price of this product. The best tip I have is to tighten the nuts and bolts by holding the screw w/ the screwdriver and then turning the nut NOT the screw, because the screw is almost impossible not to strip. This way you may not stab yourself w/ the screwdriver like I did when it keeps slipping off the screw head. The frame materials seem kind of flimsy too. I assume this composter will work OK because it's pretty simple. Bottom line: I imagine this could be manufactured in China for $5 and in the U.S. for $10, so at [$] retail, which seemed to be a good price for it, I think it is extremely over-priced.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This is supposed to be a "batch" composter, but I just throw whatever I have in it. It is suppose to require a solution, but I have never added one.

If you put it in a sunny location, it will really start cooking fast. I have had compost in as little as a month.

I usually just dump the grass clippings, coffee, and any leftover garden waste in it. The compost it produces is like steroids for my plants!

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I followed advice from previous reviewers and bought a compost starter to jump-start my first batch. So far it seems to be heating up nicely, especially since I moved it to a sunnier location. There has been some odor, but overall I have found the tumbler is neater, less smelly, and easier to work with than an open compost pile, since I have a very small garden. Although I have included kitchen scraps in this batch, I think in retrospect I should have stuck with yard waste for my first try, since the kitchen scraps seem to be a bigger source of odor.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

In the past I've tried composting a variety of different ways, but honestly I've never obtained good compost. It was always took too much maintenance to keep it moist, hot, mixed, etc. My first batch with this composter was filled with grass clippings, shredded bush clippings and leaves and the daily dose of coffee grounds. In about 3 weeks I ended up with great compost, ready to use. The bottom line is that it's a whole lot easier than anything else I've tried and it works.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I've only had this composter for a few weeks but I like it so far. Its compact and very easy to tumble. I had a tall green tumbler before which was hard to tumble and hard to extract the finished compost from.

This one is easy to load and I tumble it every day with lots of material in it with no problem.

It was also very easy to put together.

The only down side so far is a bit of an odor when you open the door. I think maybe it needs a few more air holes.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I didn't realize the system required 'saving' all material and adding it all at one time. I thought I could just add materials as they became available mostly kitchen/cooking waste. So I have a smelly mess on my hands and will probably be looking into a different composter that will allow adding material as it becomes available. Really, I think this is a dumb idea!!!!!

I just ordered this compost bin for the second time. Although the instructions say to fill it once to make your compost, I did not, just added stuff as I collected it. I am on my second batch and need to quit adding to the existing, thus the second bin. Composting goes quickly, used my first batch the beginning of summer and will be able to use the second in another month

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I have a bin composter which sits in the back of my yard so I never see it and tend to forget about it. It's also difficult to turn. So I am trying this composter and so far it's helped me actively embrace composting. Currently I am mixing my first batch and it's going very quickly. Also, it's easy to use. I don't love the legs as I think they could be made out of a tougher metal but that hasn't proved to be a problem. My only regret is that I misread the description and thought this was a continuous composter, which it is not. I have to save up my kitchen scraps in a metal bin and then make batches. But at least I'm doing it!

Really simple to put together. Easy to store. A bit heavy to turn and tumble when full. The air holes on the side will leak compost when turned but if it sits on the ground (mine is on cement) then it's not an issue. It's been fairly full and cooking for about 3 weeks, so still to early to see results.

I like the product, however, it's really built as a 'batch composter' not a 'continuous composter' as the description implies. It's a good idea to know the difference. I am very pleased with this choice. I wanted to compost for years but also wanted it easy. I am not sure about the "batch" approach so I am not sure how this will work over all. I am collecting waste in the kitchen and then dumping it in the Compost Tumbler along with some leaves, brush, etc. Because I am not adding the waste all at once, as recommended, I am not sure how the composting will go, but so far I am totally pleased with the design, lack of odor, and the convenience.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This was my first try at composting. I thought I would be able to add to the composter day by day but found that I had to add all at once. In other words I had to gather materials (5 bushels) in an alternate location until I had enough for a full batch. Easier said than done! The piles began to smell and were very messy when I went to transfer the material to the composter. Plus the composter will only make a full rotation. I can't rotate the drum 1/2 or 1/4 way around without propping it with a stick. And it also stinks. This has not been a good experience so far.

I have gardened for 50+ years and tried multiple composting systems. I do not like to add solutions to enhance the rotting process. This composter is working better than any I have tried...rotting quickly and easy to use - making additional solutions unnecessary. Needless to say, I was delighted yesterday at the garden shop when I saw the same composter for $80.00 more than I paid through Gardener's Supply! I confess I was a bit worried about the assembly because of some of the other reviews but I was able to assemble it independently and quickly...and normally assembling by instructions is not one of my strengths!

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This is my first tumbler and what I love is the convenience compared to my bin composter. What I didn't realize it that it's not a continuous composter so I collect my yard trimming in the tumbler and my kitchen scraps in a closed metal bucket. When I have enough of each, then I will do a batch. My only dislike so far is the legs, which are broad and a bit unsteady so the unit does not fit where I had originally intended it to be. I did use it to mix my soil combination for the raised beds I purchased through G. S. and it mixed my soil combination beautifully.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I just bought this compost tumbler to replace replace the bin I had purchased 12 years ago. It is made much better than the bin I had. I don't have to remember to aerate the pile. I just give it a couple of turns when I walk by. I've always wanted a tumbler and the price was better than the competition. Assembly was a snap; I even found a way to assemble the tumbler to the legs without assistance from a second person. I can't say there is anything that's not so great about it, and I don't think I will find any problems. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a quality compost tumbler. GSC is an employee owned company, and that's a good thing. I worked for and dealt with employee owned companies, and my experience is their customers are always #1.

Very easy to assemble, fill, aerate and then use when it's done. So useful, I purchased a second one 2 weeks after receiving my first. My kids are learning a lot about science in the garden, too!

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

We've just started using it, and are pretty sure that our first batch of compost will not follow the use guidelines (we will fill it gradually, and then start another collection bin while this one is doing its thing; presumably subsequent batches of compost will be closer to the guidelines for optimum production) but that's okay--we're not expecting maximum production in minimum time and do not plan to use additives. SO far it's fine--easy access, sturdy, good mixing of contents.

We've only had our composter for less than a month, but so far, are very pleased. We put it together in less than 30 minutes. It is very easy to fill, and very easy to turn. I notice no odor in the yard when I'm near it. It is better than I expected and I can't wait to get the first batch of compost. And this was one of the less expensive of the composters advertised out there. I would definitely recommend.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I have been looking for an affordable compost tumbler for years and this one finally fits the bill. I like that you dont have to turn in by hand with a pitchfork, just give it a little spin after adding material. The composter is very sturdy, made out of thick plastic. It seals nicely so no animals can get in, yet there are small holes for aeration. I have only had it for a few weeks and it hasnt been too warm, so I can't speak for how well/fast the compost turns out. But so far I am very pleased with how it functions. As for the complaints about assembly...ignore them. The instructions might not be great, but it is super simple, only a few steps.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I looked at many tumbling composters. This one was by far the design I liked the best and the price was excellent. It was easy to assemble and turns like a charm. I wish the frame had been rustproofed. I used a rust preventing paint, but it scraped off in some areas already.

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This compost tumbler is more attractive than the pile I had on the ground before, but the black plastic doesn't look very pretty or blend in with the landscape, so I keep it behind the house next to the garbage bin.
It's easy to turn and mix the contents, but once it's filled, one has to leave it for at least four weeks to break down, and I'm stuck wondering what to do with my kitchen scraps for the coming month.
It's a nice height, not very heavy and can be moved around easily, but the door is rather tight and a little difficult to open and shut.
It was also more expensive than the composters I found at local stores, but I'm happy with it.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

We started our first batch just a couple weeks ago, and already the material has reduced to half its size, has a nice warm core, and is composting quite nicely. We did add a little compost from a neighbor as "starter" but didn't require any purchased starters. Larger kitchen scraps are taking longer than grass clippings to break down, but that is to be expected.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Since we just starated using the composter about a month ago, we have not generated great volumes of compost. It is, however, providing us with a means for making use of our kitchen scrap and yard waste and we are happy about that. We have two minor critiques and one advisory point about it's usage. The criticisms are as follows: 1) The metal frame is OK but a bit wobbly when the unit is pushed sideways. It would be better if it had more reinforcing braces and if it were made out of stainless steel. 2) The door or panel that we slide open when we want to put materials in or take them out fits a little too tightly so that we have to hit it to get it started. Then we have to push a little more firmly than seems necessary to open it wider. This is not unmanageable but it puts stress on the wobbly frame each time we use it.On the advise side of this commentary, we did not understand when we read about this piece of equipment that it is intended to be filled and then used as described. We bought it with the idea that we could use it as directed in the on-line literature and fill it gradually. However, after we got the actual paperwork and read it we learned that it is designed to be filled and then used. So, [...] we decided that we would not rotate it until we had built up enough materials inside. This approach seems to be working.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Just started using the composter so can't really rate how well it composts. However, it's the perfect sized for my small yard. Assembly is really not that complex but do heed all the warnings that the parts are labeled completely wrong! I knew that going in and just looked at the pictures so it was no problem. If the holes don't line up when putting on the tumbler, don't drive yourself crazy trying to line them up. Reverse the side supports on the legs. It will fit together perfectly. The tumbler is large and awkward to lift so you will definitely need 2 people for assembly. Easy to spin on the stand. Door is a little stiff but seems to be loosening up with use. I feel better tossing kitchen scraps in the composter than into the garbage. Every little bit helps! So far, so good!

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This composter came the next day after ordering, assembled in less than 20 minutes, and works beautifully. After a bunch of old dry leaves, have been adding kitchen scraps each day until the appropriate ratio of "greens" and "browns" is achieved, so I can't yet evaluate on how long it takes to produce compost. But I'm looking forward to it!

This compost tumbler was easy to assemble by myself and easy to load. I didn't realize the difference between batch composting and the constant method where scraps, etc. could be added daily, or I might have opted for a bin composter. Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Support legs were labeled incorrectly, but even when I figured it out, the pieces did NOT fit together easily. Took a lot of effort to get screw holes to align and even when I did it seemed loose and a little wobbly. Getting the barrel attached to the frame was a real challenge. I set it on the ground right outside my deck so it's quite convenient to add kitchen scraps and give it a whirl. It's still standing, turns easily, and hasn't tipped, so I think it will hold. I'm still adding ingredients after 2-3 weeks so I can't say how quickly it composts. Time will tell...

The unit's legs took a while to put together, as the directions were wrong, and the screw pack was missing a screw. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to put it together, you just need to screw it up like the directions ask you to, then you'll figure out the right way to do it. It does the same thing as the competition for a much better price, so that's a big plus!

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I just received the compost tumbler today.
#1 I can't evaluate the effectiveness of this product for 6 weeks or so - stay tuned.
#2 I read reviews stating this product was difficult to assemble. My husband laughed and said "you gardeners" as he had it assembled in 5 minutes. Moral of the story: Have a mechanically inclined person to help with assembly.
#3 I was disappointed to find out that we needed activator to use this product at its optimum efficiency. I was ready to compost tonight, but now must wait. My recommendation would be for the activator to be included with the purchase of the compost tumbler.
#4 Looks nice - stay tuned for review about how well it works.
Happy Gardening and "green" living.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

We plan to use this in a public picnic area, expecting that kids will be curious and want to add to it and give it a spin. It rotates smoothly and is designed with indentations on the barrel so there are not pinch-points associated with a crank handle.
It was easy to assemble and seems very durable. Ony issue is the sliding door sticks and is difficult to open.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I like that you can put in all kitchen scraps, including coffee grounds, and you don't have to struggle to turn it. The door is a little stiff, but I think it will be easier to open and close as time goes by. The door is a good size. I am happy with the purchase. It took three of us to get it together because the directions were off. It is a good buy.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

We, as a family eat organic food and recycle everything we can, and we now feel so much better that we have somewhere to put our veggie peelings and apple cores, leaves and garden stuff. We love the neat design of the tumbler and its compact size, since it has to sit in our carport along with two cars, motor cycle and trash receptacle. There is nothing negative to say about this product. We are looking forward to our composted material - it will be put to use in our garden. Great product, great price. Thank you!

Describe Yourself:

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I had some problems getting this together, it was label badly. Also, there seems to be no aeration so my compost (or trash) is sitting and smelling. It does not work, and I've worked with compost for years, so this is not user error. Plus the door gets stuck when I open or shut it and thats frustrating since I am a bit older.

Compost Tumbler was easy to set up. But haven't started to compost yet. I think the weather is to cold. May need to purchase compost starter. It will be easy to compost. Right now we use a big compost bin that is very physical to turn and the snakes are bad in it. I'm excited about the new tumbler.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Compared to the price of other composters, this is an excelent value. Well made, sturdy and easy to put together. I will make this purchase again. However, heed the instructions that tell you to put the elbows on the compost bin before you attach the rest of the legs. The elbows are at at a slight angle due to the way the screws align. Have not had it long enough to test the time to compost.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

The tumbler seems well made, and the black color helps absorb sunlight and speeds the decomposition process. My only concern is that the metal parts aren't as robust as I had hoped. No proof of this yet, as it's pretty new, but I was hoping for a stronger stand for the revolving composter.I can also imagine that the center rod will eventually rust and give out, causing me to have to buy and drill a replacement part, though, again, I have no proof of this.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This is my first experience trying to make compost and my first batch is not done yet. The product was easy to assemble but do so where you want it placed. It is a little heavy to move because of the weighted lid. I was surprised by the instructions indicating it was designed for "batches" and should be started with several "bushels" of material for the batch. that is not how I wanted to use it, so I am adding my indoor scraps as about a gallon at a time. I'll see how that works. The only problem I have right now is trying to open and close the lid because it is very hard to slide.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

For about two years I've been composting with several individual columns of rabbit fencing type mesh and it works pretty well but slowly. As its gotten colder, I've been noticing that area rodents and even my own goofy Basset Hound have been treating my compost area like their own personal buffet. So this tumbler will dissuade beasts from taking up residence in my side-yard and also create a warm, contained, and more frequently aerated batch of compost. I'm really looking forward to seeing its products.
The container is very tough and sturdy and I like that it is made from recycled plastic (we try whenever possible to buy recycled stuff to ensure markets for post-consumer recycled materials). The legs are OK, but don't SEEM heavy duty enough to support a full load of compostables. They remind me of the poles for the ancient family-sized tent that we would take on camping trips when I was a kid.

Best Uses:

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

It is too early for me to rate this compost tumbler. What appealed to me was the simplicity of the design and its compact, unobtrusive lines. The assembly was fairly simple.

My one complaint is that an uneven, rough molding seams in the lid grooves made it very difficult to slide the top open prior to assembly. Since all the mounting pieces were housed inside the drum, I worried I would not be able to assemble this piece of equipment. Once I managed to open drum, I had to cut off the excess protruding plastic to ensure a smoother opening of the lid. It is better now but it dtill sticks and makes opening the composter a bit of a hsssle. Better quality control would eliminate this problem.

The manual does warns that the composter rotates with the opening facing down when not full; but it is a bother to have to hold the drum in place with one hand while filling it with the other. Since the opening is fairly narrow, bulky loads can be tricky to handle with one hand only. A eimple locking system holding the drum up while loading would alleviate this problem.

I will note that this tumbler rotates easily with little effort on your part -easier than with the conventional crank action tumblers.

As for the ability to produce compost within a decent time frame, it is too early for me to tell as I just started using this model.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This is a handy and very practical composter. It gets the organic material off the ground, is easy to access, and easy to maintain. The door is very stiff to open at first; but after a few months, it loosens up a bit (though it remains a little difficult). The plus side of this is that the door is tight and keeps pests out and odors in. I used the compost starter with it, and it worked fast and efficiently. We'll see how it does in winter--no telling as yet.

I plan to use it heavily when the leaves fall here in Central Texas. Presently, it's for kitchen scraps. I couldn't place it on the patio as it would be too heavy to move when full.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

The biggest problem with this product is the instructions it comes with. Although I have built hundreds of articles of furniture, etc, I could NOT figure this out without a phone call to the help desk. They were awesome, though, got me set up in a snap.

The tumbler turns very easily, and the door gets easier to use each time. I am very happy with this product, and looking forward to my first batch of compost.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

This composter was pretty easy to assemble. I did it myself but two more hands would have been helpful. I've been impressed with how sturdy and stable it is when filled. It's super easy to turn (my 5 year old grandson loves to turn it). The large door easily slides open to either side.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

It was a little confusing to put together bceause the parts had identifying letters that did not match the description. However, the barrel is sturdy, turns well and seems to be a good composter. I've only had it a month, but waste is breaking down. I shopped for many turning composters and found this to be a good one for the price

Cons:

Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Easy to assemble but the sliding door continues to be difficult to open. Also this tumbler is only half of a composting cycle. Directions that came with it say it's designed for batch processing only so it doesn't work as well if you continuously add organic matter in it. We need another composter to keep adding kitchen and yard waste to for about a month BEFORE we put it in this tumbler for batch processing. We used the SuperHot Compost Starter with it and that seems to speed things up.

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I've been a patient composter for years, turning the piles with a pitchfork, but now that I have a back disease, the pitchfork and I have sadly parted ways. With the compost tumbler, I can add a large amount from one of the piles and some warm water. Then every few days, I give it a few tumbles, easily check the temperature and wetness and pullout a few sticks that may be too large. My first load was ready in four weeks and the second load is steaming along just fine. This is like child's play compared to a stationary composter! I love it!

Pros:
Capacity
Cons:
Hard to turn when full, Needs Solution Added, Pervasive Odor
Best Uses:
Leaves & Brush

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

First load was all grass, that simply turned to black sog. Added leaves and some water, that was better but not as good as our vertical composter. Takes a long time to develop into compost, not the few weeks advertised. Having a handle would make it easier to rotate.

Gardener's Supply Company Response: Keep in mind that you have to mix "brown" and "green" ingredients to trigger composting. For a comprehensive guide to composting -- and "recipes" for your next batch -- search on the keywords "composting made easy".

Best Uses:
Fruit Rinds, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

I'm just getting started with composting and felt this didn't deliver the ease that it promised. You can't just add refuse to the pile. The instructions tell you to keep composting ingredients separate until you are ready to compost. Once you have enough collected to compost, it does become simple. You just layer the ingredients by type until the composter is full, turn it periodically, and you should have compost in 30 days or so. Other than this hassle, I do appreciate it's use but it would be nice to know what you're getting into before you buy it.

Fairly easy to use.
By BarbVerified Purchaser from Marysville, OH on 7/8/2008
Pros:
Easy Assembly
Cons:
Doesn't allow rain in
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

Assembled easily; Easy to turn but it does not compost very quickly. Opening is narrow and you must add water because it does not allow rain to penetrate it. It's better than a bin that you have to try to turn but it could use a few improvements.

Rolling thunder...
By Anonymous LeeVerified Purchaser from Anchorage Alaska on 7/8/2008
Pros:
Material color apropos
Cons:
Stand too rustable
Best Uses:
Fertilizer Production, Leaves & Brush, Synergistic use of debris
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Tumbler:

It's a stupid survey that only allows 25 space/letter responses...
I anticipate good use out of this device, but suspect that the design features of the stand will cause premature corrosion/failure. For the price paid, I was hoping for a better stand design. Ease of assembly was great, but not the only feature stand should be designed for.
Attaching tumbler to stand was difficult because of alignment of drill holes...eventually had to mount shaft underneath 'arch' to enable sufficient pull on bolt to bring about alignment
