(based on 43 ratings)
Located in: Gardening, Composting, Composters
It took some ingenious gardeners in New Zealand to devise the Earthmaker™ Composter, an efficient, gravity-fed composting system. Kitchen scraps and garden waste start in the top chamber of this compost system, where beneficial fungi and bacteria handle the initial stages of decomposition. After 3 to 5 weeks, slide out the panel and let the contents move down into the cooler, second chamber. After another 3 to 5 weeks, guide the finished compost into the lower chamber where it matures and can be easily removed for use in your garden.

• Make finished, nutrient-rich compost in as little as 10 weeks
• Designed to handle all compostable yard, garden and kitchen waste
• Three-chamber process cooks compost faster
• Large, 16-1/2 cubic feet capacity
• Generously sized lid on top swings open for easy filling
• This oversize item has a $15 additional shipping charge

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

Wasn't sure at first, slow to get started, but now we are on a roll. Amazing how much goes in, and how little comes out. My compost is beautiful and sweet. Do not put in corn cobs or twigs unless they are chopped. We are very satisfied. Our friends who have to turn their compost bins are jealous of our bin. COMPOSTING IS A S-L-O-W PROCESS. BE PATIENT!

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

I have this where the sun is for part of the day(4-5 hours) and have noted, yesterday, that there was a strong oder while I was outside near it. I may have put it in the wrong place and that maybe the probem. I also add kitchen waste to it every few days and don't give it time to composte.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

I chose this instead of the tumbler because I thought it was more attractive. I am still only using the top section as I haven't had it that long. So, we will have to see how it composts... but so far, it is very easy to use (my 7 year old puts the kitchen scraps in) and looks great.

I was very interest in this and I have composted before. THe area I have it gives sun for part of the day but composting you do need sun to help "cook" the product. I haven't added a lot of things yet and I noted it dosn't use a lot of water. will continue to moniter the product and hope it will work better at the second stage.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

It is difficult to move debris from one chamber to another. The tool that comes with the composter is nearly useless. In order to move compost to a different chamber, you have to bend way over and dig to the back of the bin. Since the interior is too dark, you can't see what you are doing and how much compost there is left to move.

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

The composter was very difficult for one person to assemble. The three tiers are small, only kitchen waste will fit. If you compost grass, leaves and other larger, bulky items, this is not the composter for you. It has no bottom and the top and front doors do not fit securely! I had to purchase a galvanized screen to make a secure bottom enclosure. I'm not sure what to do to keep rodents from entering from the top or front. The description from the online ad and comments did not indicate it lacked a bottom and secure exterior enclosures. For the finished product, it is way overpriced. I thought I was paying for a larger, secure composter with 4 sides. If several pieces hadn't snap off during assembly, I would have sent it back for a refund.

It is sturdy, but unless the bottom tier is full, it may blow over in a strong wind. It cannot be placed in direct sun, but it will conduct heat because it is black. It has 3 tiers for the different composting stages and a tool to help mix the 2nd and 1st stages of composting.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

Well, yes, it is nice and compact and quite cleaver BUT this kiwis down under (the composter originates from New Zealand) did not think how to keep the rodents away. I have become the laughing stock of the neighbourhood's chipmunks and raccoons that managed to get in by taking off the top and/or digging tunnels into the ground and accessing from under the composter. I am very disappointed.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

I had to fabricate a bottom, so that liquid draining from the composter did not stain my patio. I could not keep it in the location of the previous composter, as the plastic loses inetgrity if it is in direct sunlight for too many hours.

It is easy to open and close and it does have a large capacity.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

The pole that you are supposed to toss the composting materials is pretty awkward.. like using a pool cue. I've only had it 2 weeks but it doesn't seem like much is happening compost wise... maybe that's because the raccoon was getting into it. I have now put a giant stone on top of it, and have bungied the composter's body, so I hope the animals are now permanently thwarted. We'll see.

I waited until I had my first compost batch. I used a starter to get the first batch going and have not used it since. This is very easy to put together and use. It looks good for a compost bin. If you mix the ingredients properly there is no smell. This bin provides plenty of compost. The only problem I have is the bottom door does not fit tight enough. With this said I would highly recommend this compost bin for anyone who wants to be green.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

I bought the Earthmaker as a second composter, mainly to compost kitchen scraps while my Compost Tumbler is processing. I am currently using it to store kitchen scraps over the winter in our insulated garage (temperature hanging around 40 degrees F most of the time). I put down a good bed of shredded leaves into which I mix the kitchen scraps. It looks like the Earthmaker will be big enough to hold most of the winter's scraps. Of course, I don't know how well it composts yet, but there is no odor, which indicates that some composting is occurring already. Tip: if you get odor in any composter, the problem is more likely your mix of nitrogen and carbon and usually means you don't have enough carbon sources (shredded leaves or shredded newspaper are good sources). The only fault in the composter would be lack of aeration. The Earthmaker seems to offer plenty of aeration.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

I received this in very late fall and temperstures have been unseasonably cold. Difficult to get started with daily scraps in this weather. Have added leaves etc but still not throwing any center heat after nearly 2 months. Was easy to assemble, easy to aerate, Bears have not bothered it yet so I guess odor control is a plus also. Will see what spring brings.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

This is my second attempt at composting. (A bad composter can turn you off to the process!) This composter holds A LOT of material. I like that you can continuously add to it. You don't have to "close" the batch. Assembly was easy. Took about 30 minutes. I was nervous that there were small broken pieces of plastic when I opened the box, but they were not from the unit. Must have been factory scraps. I haven't gotten my first batch yet, but I have high hopes!

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

Absolutely easy to set up and takes little space and is unobtrusive in the garden. A little early to see results but capacity is huge. I asked at our local [...] for coffee grounds and they gave me an enormous bag which the Earthmaker just swallowed up. It seals in bugs and odor completely - we're very happy to have it.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

This product was a breeze to assemble, however I was unaware that it should not be placed in direct sun or the integrity of the plastic may be compromised. I have an extremely sunny property and had a difficult time placing it where it would not be in direct afternoon sun. Capacity is great & the fact that you can put shredded paper in it makes it even more useful!

I have found that the swinging top piece doesn't completely cover the opening so rain water does make for excess moisture.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

I bought this composter for my son for Christmas. I have a small round one that you turn. When I saw how easy this one is, I was a little envious. This helps to teach the kids not to be so wasteful and that most things can be reused.

Comments about Earthmaker™ Composter:

I had previously purchased another composter from Gardner's supply, but I could never quite get the balance of the compost right. The Earthmaker is very easy, and hold so much more than the other one I have. I don't have to worry about touching any of it while it is composting, and it is so quick. It's the best composter I have come across.
