This sits on my kitchen counter looking pretty and working hard! I use it during meal prep and clean up. It looks pretty, is easy to clean (particularly if you use the bio liners) and holds a lot. I wish I would have purchased one sooner.

Looks like a fire hydrant!

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

Returned this item immediately. I can't believe it ever got into production. The catalog photo is misleading - so much more attractive than the actual product. This crock is ugly. Looks like a cross between a fire plug and an old fashioned garbage can. Takes up way too much space for the little waste it stores. Too heavy. Lid is a total nuisance. I don't want to lift a heavy lid every time I toss a scrap. I'm much happier with my inexpensive, rectangular, plastic, food-storage container. That has a lid which easily stores beneath the container, it's lightweight, space efficient, and easy to clean.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I ordered this as a gift for my daughter. When opened, there was a chip on the lid. We used a red magic marker to color it in. Then when "just bumped" we had another chip on the bottom. We used a red magic marker on that also! It is a nice looking compost crock, but don't know how it will hold up. Doesn't seem like anything "Made in China" is great quality.

The new style lid doesn't have the smaller lip inside to hold the filter more securely. The new one works but you have to be careful not to lose the filter.Still it is my favorite style for gathering coffee grounds, tea leaves and veggie peelings for my compost. I have one in the home, trailer and cabin!

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

Looks great on my kitchen counter and the perfect size to collect kitchen scraps and coffee grounds. Probably should have gotten the bio bags, but it's pretty easy to rinse out after emptying. I do want to attach some felt or cork pads on the bottom because I'm afraid it will scratch the granite counter top.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

The red crock compost bucket looks great in my black and white kitchen. So far it does the job it was intended to do. However, I was a little disappointed that I paid $30 for a crock that doesn't feel real sturdy. I'm thinking that one bump on something and it's probably a gonner. I might point out that it's "Made in China."

I use the compost crock to collect everything that can go into the vegetabe garden soil. In the winter I am using it to collect wet garbage for disposal. I use small plastic bags as liners and they work perfectly. I don't know how I managed for so long without this crock. It's also very attractive on the kitchen counter compared to the old ice cream pail I used before finding this!

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I can fill this can every 1-2 days, it's small enough not to be in the way on the kitchen counter and yet big enough to hold a few days of kitchen waste easily. I haven't noticed any bad smell so the filter must work when closed because I use onions in almost everything I cook. After dumping in compost bin, it's easily rinsed out, no deep crevices in the bottom to have to scrub everytime. The red color I picked is PERFECT in my new kitchen. THANKS.

We are currently doing a project at our Church called "Garden for God". We have 3 raised beds 10 x 20 feet. I started a mulch pile and asked evryone to contribute. I started donating these crocks to our church members for free to help. They have taken off like wildfire. I am ordering more and more every week for the church memebers. They really like the biodegradable bags with these crocks!

Cute way to compost!
By Kenzie's momVerified Purchaser from North Carolina on 3/2/2011

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

We moved into a house that had two compost bins in the far back yard. I want to compost, but don't want to walk back every day. This kitchen compost device holds scraps for compost for several days until filled. The container is cute and with the filters, it doesn't smell at all.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I like that it is not too tall to fit under counter, but when there is some large kitchen waste it is full FAST. If you have trouble with manual dexterity, the lid can be hard to handle, especially if your hands are wet or you are handling a couple of things at once.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

i bought this kitchen scrap compost pot for my parents and it looks very nice. However it broke as soon as my parents got it out of the box. The product is made of ceramic with a heavy gage wire handle. The pressure of the handle on the ceramic snapped the handle and a chunk of ceramic right off the pot as soon as you picked it up. The ceramic was just to thin to handle the handle.

Love the appearance and size. However it is very suscepible to chipping and cracking. I have granite counter tops and have bumped it several times against the counter top. The bottom has chipped and the top is cracked (in less than 3 months). If there is a metal one I would opt for it instead of the ceramic.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

The compost crock snugs into a corner on our kitchen countertop and acts as a convenient reminder to compost coffee grounds, tea leaves and raw vegetable and fruit scraps rather than putting them down the garbage disposal. When it is full, we transfer the contents to our garden compost bin. Living on a lake, composting is ecologically friendlier than using artificial fertilizers. Thanks for helping us care about the local ecology.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I bought two - a red one for my home and a blue one as a Christmas gift. The crock is a good size and the handle makes it nice to carry outside to our compost bin. We had been using plastic dishes and this is much more attractive and handy. Also bought the filters, which so far have been keeping the odors under control. Did not purchase the bag liners, but there is no need for them, as the crock empties and rinses out nicely. I would like to see more color selection, like green or brown.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I love this product. I always hated scrap bags in the sink and/or the smell caused by placing scraps in the trash, and some things you just don't want to put down the garbage disposal. I broke mine and just purchased another to replace it. I wish the lid were just a little more solid so it wouldn't break as easily.

Cons:
Flimsy
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

This is beautiful on my counter. I've owned it for about 8 weeks and the very first time I took out the compost the handle slipped off which is odd because it's next to impossible to get the handle back on. Then when I sat it back on my counter, it got a large chip on the side. Now it has a big crack down one side. It's still holding together but I don't know how much longer it will. It's not worth the price and I'll be replacing it with something metal and more sturdy.

Red is not red
By Kathryn the RNVerified Reviewer from Columbia, SC on 9/23/2010
Pros:
Easy Assembly
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate, Filter gets moldy, Fragile breaks easily, Pervasive Odor, Red is very muted
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

Color photo for the red is WAY off. (Un)fortunately, I chipped the bottom on the sink after 3 weeks of use and then again later. The my 22 year old son, broke the top. The filter touched the compost and got moldy and we inserted the second and tried to keep it from touching the scraps. The smell is terrible without the filter due to the holes in the lid. I do not recommend for a cluzty gardender who has any age children in the home.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I love my compost bucket. I just started composting this year & this makes it so much easier! My only complaint is that it starts to smell within 1-2 days with the charcoal filter. I find that I can survive without the expensive biodegradable bags because moisture condenses inside the bucket when I use them and I have to wash the bucket anyway!

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

Like this crock for its design (looks great right on my counter), color selection (to match my decor) and size. It's large enough to hold many days' worth of scraps, and I like its large opening. I use a plastic bag inside & close it between fillings. I've not had any problem with odors or fruit flies. The charcoal filter works to eliminate odors along with the use of the interior bag. The only drawback for me is the 'clanging" sound of the metal handle on the crock. It's a bit loud. Other than that, I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

Looks great on the counter. With aid of charcoal filter, efforts to learn how to feed the compost heap instead of the garbage pick up truck are forgiving if do not frequently empty as the contents will start to decompose before being deposited into compost heap as the device is easy to clean and does not produce a detectable oder. Be careful on the way to the heap as the lid does NOT lock onto container and may slip off (easy to glue together).

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

This little crock is my conscience. I see it every time I am working in the kitchen and I am reminded to put my kitchen scraps to work for me. I can easily collect them as I prepare meals. Items that I used to just toss in the trash are now being recycled and placed regularly in our larger outdoor compost container.

I bought one for a friend who doesn't do her own composting, but her trash removal company accepts kitchen scraps in biodegradable bags to compost at their facility, so it is a good thing for her as well.

This product, along with the biodegradable bags, is an attractive and useful addition to any kitchen.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I've had this pail for years. It looks good and matches my kitchen very well. However, the lid slipped out of my hand and broke instantly on the granite countertop. After mending it a few times, I finally bought a new lid, which fell on the counter and broke almost immediately. Again I've been gluing it but its beyond repair again so I have to look for a more durable material. I'm not the klutziest person, so if you think there's any change the lid might slip, think twice. Also, I find that the carbon filters this site sells get moldy very quickly.
The pail itself has a decent capacity. The metal handle has become unlatched from the nubs on the side and I've had to use pliers to tighten it back on but that's not a big deal.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

Be careful setting this down on a hard countertop; it chipped the first time I set it down on the kitchen counter. Now I set it down on a potholder to protect it and my granite countertop... I would get the lighter weight stainless steel one next time. It's convenient to have this in the kitchen, though, but it's a bit too big to leave out on counterspace except when using it. It works well with the bio-bags. It has good capacity, too.

We have this beautiful white crock sitting on the counter by the sink. Virtually oderfree with the charcoal filter. The bags that go with it, keep cleanup to a mininum and no pesty little flys. We just love it. When it is full we throw the bag in the compost bin and rinse the crock and put a new bag in it.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

The first time i used it, it chipped when the lid was replaced. When it was full, I brought it to the garden composter outside and one of the arms snapped completely off when the handle was turned back to the upright position. It's way too delicate to be a useful gardening tool. I'm still using it but it looks awful and I have barely paid for it. I'm really disappointed!

Keep it next to the kitchen sink. Very handy but somewhat small if you add scraps while preparing a meal. It will fill up quickly! Mine came with a chip in the base despite being well packaged. The bags being sold separately are a little big for this crock.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I LOVE this compost crock in my kitchen. It's attractive and fits right in with our other kitchen decor. I use a bio bag so I don't have to wash it all the time and the carbon filter in the top keeps odors at bay. We do generate a lot of scraps so I have to empty in the outside bin almost every day but I wouldn't really want anything much bigger on the counter anyway.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

It is very attractive in the cobalt blue and functions well. The handle was a problem the first time we used it to carry the crock outside. It fits very tightly against the porcelain knobs where it attaches to crock, so that when you raise the handle or lower it it scores a line into the knob which then makes the knob snap off very easily. We removed the handle and glued the knob back on. So we think the handle should be redesigned but we liked it enough to keep it because other than that it is good.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I wrote a review about this crock in January about my crock breaking because the handle kept falling off. I received a new crock and the handle is much more secure which gives me more confidence carrying it out to my compost pile without the handle separating from the crock causing it to shatter - as my last one did. I'm assuming that my original crock's handle was defective; therefore, if all the crocks' handles are like my current one then I recommend this as a perfect counter compost collector.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

We recently replaced the kitchen compost crock we bought from Gardener's Supply Co. a few years ago. The new version is still an attractive kitchen accessory, but the redesigned cover fails to adequately hold in the carbon filter. We've already lost one filter into the bowels of the compost heap. Please reinstate the old, well thought out design.

I do a lot of juicing and this compost crock is ideal for tossing the pith into. It's easy to clean though I place plastic bags (from grocery store or from Gardeners.com) inside to hold the compost. This makes it easier to take scraps outside to either my worm bin or regular compost.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I don't have room on the counter for one more thing, so this is stored under the sink. I imagined I would have to empty it more often, but even with watermelon rinds, things settle in and it holds a lot. I was worried about attracting little fruit flies, but there have been none. The filter has also worked well to keep odors at bay.

Attractive, Easy Assembly, Odor Free
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

This is a fine item for the kitchen. It is clean, nicely designed, well-made. The carbon filter prevents odor. It could stand to be a big larger, but is really excellent as it is. The biodegradable insert bags are unfortunately not waterproof, so that each time the bag is removed the crock needs to be rinsed out, but that is easy.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I love this crock. There's no odor, even after two weeks of scrap collecting in the pail. I started out with a plastic pail with lid and had continual problems with odor, even though I emptied it frequently. Unlike plastic pails, this crock also cleans beautifully in the dishwasher and does not retain odors. The best part is that it's attractive so I don't mind keeping it out on the counter, making composting easy and convenient.

Lid not completely glazed
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I love my composting crock! It sits on the kitchen counter, next to the sink. With only two of us, it can be a while between emptyings and there is zero smell! I use the degradable bags in it, but they sometimes dissolve before the crock is full. One thing I would change is to completely glaze the lid - there is an unglazed ring at the very bottom edge - it collects mildew and it is almost impossible to clean that unglazed edge. Oops, make that two things; I'd more securely fasten the wire handle on the crock. My husband almost dropped it down the cellar stairs because he was holding it by the handle. Bad idea. :-)
Otherwise, I think this is a wonderful product.

Cons:
Handle falls off easily, Odor filter falls out
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

It's a very attractive & useful product. There is no odor when the filter is used however, the filter needs to be a little larger so it fits properly in the lid. The filter falls out of the lid, into the scraps & mold begins to grow on the filter. It's the right size so it fits nicely on the counter and it's attractive looking. The compact size helps keep the scraps out of the house & in the compost pile where they belong. The handle is easily removed for cleaning but it sometimes falls off so it needs to fit just a bit more securely.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I bought this to replace another one I had that frankly was unattractive, and didn't want on my counter. This is so attactive and cute. I do wish it was a little bigger to hold more, but then again, it might end up being an eye sore.
The bio-bags are great, but seem way too big for this crock. All in all, very satisfied.

I love the look of this pail. I was happy with it in the beginning, but the handle falls off all the time. You can not depend on the handle. Today the handle fell off on the way to the compost pile and the pail fell and broke. I am on this website to order another one - this time stainless steel!

For now, I use it only to collect coffee grounds for the garden. It served that purpose perfectly and doesn't take up too much space on the counter. I keep this compost crock on my kitchen counter, and it makes it much easier for me to save scraps for the composter. I used to use a bowl, and I had to empty it every night. I can wait a few days with the crock. The only problem is that the filters do get moldy fairly quickly. I just ignore that. . . .

My small kitchen appliances are red so the crock fits right in. I put coffee grounds, spent flowers, peelings from potatoes and fruit and add everything along with the bag to my little compost pile.(The bag makes it easy to transport to the compost pile but so far the bags haven't decomposed.) I don't have compost yet but hopefully I will soon. I add grass clippings, weeds, old potting soil, etc. and stir it around. I like the crock very much and I'm glad I bought it. I plan to get one for my co-worker for her birthday.

Handle a Big Concern
By The GardenerVerified Purchaser from New Hartford, CT on 6/8/2009
Pros:
Attractive
Cons:
Pervasive Odor
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

The handle is very insecusre. Even with trying to tighten it, it still is in a "must watch situation". If you try, and it is not easy, to tighten the handle too much it looks like you would break the container. The way it is set up it slids off the stub or holder way too easily. When you pick it up by the handle you have to really make sure that it is on and then I still hold it from the bottom.
Other than that the container is very attractive and fits in on the kitchen counter like it belongs there.
You should also include two charcoal filters instead of one! Thanks, Jack Cary

I love this compost crock. It holds a lot, so it sometimes sits on the counter for several days before being emptied, and I haven't had a problem with odors at all. It is easy to clean as it is dishwasher safe. I have the red one, and the color is bright and cheery and goes great in my kitchen. It is a tiny bit rough on the bottom, so I set it on a little cork mat to make sure it doesn't scratch the counter, but that is the only drawback I have found.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

This kitchen compost container is lovely, classic in design. It holds a lot and i have had no problem with smell, with or without the filter (I do empty it frequently). My only complaint is that the bottom of the container is a bit rough, and when I pull it from the back of the counter to the front to place vegetable matter inside it scratches my wood counter top. I need to get felt or some other smooth material for the base so it does not scrtach the counter surfaces.

I just love this crock. We have it sitting on our kitchen counter and it looks very pretty. Bought it for my husband, because he used to put scraps in plastic bags and it looked bad and sometimes it smelled a bit if he didn't take it out right aways. This crock has no odor that I can tell so far. I was a bit sceptical at first but I have yet to smell anything. Great product and look.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

I love this crock, especially with the biobags. It's easy to use and traps the odors completely. Using the biobags makes it easy to carry the compost out to the composter and dump it right in. The only thing that would make it better is if it was a little bit bigger.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

This container is large enough to last us about a week of kitchen scraps on compostable goods. We opted for the insert bags that break down, for ease of cleaning. We did notice that if you load the container full so that compost touches the filter (inserted in lid), the filter can get a little yucky. But we washed off the filter and don't cram it full anymore. We have yet to notice any odors and we often put garlic leftovers in our compost. It also looks cute sitting our counter and we don't feel the need to hide it under the sink.

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

Looks great, much better than the bowl we used to use. Hides messy stuff (rotten bananas) bound for compost bin, and also hides odors. We take stuff to our compost bin daily; and my boys carry it by holding the bottom of the crock, not by the handle, and leave the lid inside to avoid breakage. The crock is coated on the inside, which helps with messes and odors getting into the crock.

Cute compost crock but somewhat fragile
By hypathiaVerified Purchaser from Seattle, WA on 5/8/2009
Pros:
Attractive, Capacity
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kitchen Compost Crock:

This is a nice looking compost crock with a good capacity if you empty your compost out frequently.
My only concern although it is heavy in weight and feels solid is that it may chip. I always tie off my compost bag and take that to the compost bin versus taking the compost crock and emptying it into the bin. I would be afraid to "bang" out any debris from the bin for fear of damaging the crock.

We use this on the kitchen counter-top for coffee grounds that I need to spread around our Blueberry Plants, to keep the soil acidic. Thank you so much for this perfect addition to our kitchen.
