I would suggest rubbing a dry bar of soap along the bottom and edge of the outer slat of each drawer and the rails into which they slide. This makes them have an easy and smooth slide in and out. Learned it from and old carpenter!

This well constructed product provides shelves that slide easily. It fits in a tight space in a cool room in our home, adjacent to our kitchen. We store root crops, dried herbs, fruit, and packages of beans and other packaged products.

This rack is very sturdy and easy to assemble--it only took about a half hour to put it all together. The wood is pine, so it's soft and easy to screw the braces on. I've put squash and potatoes on the racks, though the bigger squashes only fit on top.

I bought this for my family to use. We are avid gardeners, canners, cooks, etc. We put the veggie rack in our basement (nice steady cool temp. there) It is one of the best products we have purchased to aid in all of our harvesting/storing of veggies AND we have purchased a lot of items!!!

I stored my early onions in potato sacks and hung them in my garage. By mid-summer, I had to throw them away. This harvest drawer should help prevent spoilage for all my crops! I do wish the bottoms of each drawer had plastic screening instead of wooden slats. That way it doesn't matter how big or small the harvest, it should hold it and not bruise it either. But overall, this drawer is sturdier than some of the earlier reviews and it took no time to assemble.

I assembled it in less than 1/2 hour. It's very sturdy and the slides work well. We loaded it with onions, beets and potatoes. My storage location is good but not great. We'll see how the vegies turn out. If there are failures it won't be because of the rack.

The back cross braces came off the first time I moved the rack due to screws that that were too short and wood that was too soft. I don't have any confidence that this piece will hold up long term with much weight on it. Frankly, I am very sorry that I purchased it!

I have wanted this type of unit for many years and it has worked perfectly for me. It's in our basement(unheated) and I have most of our 6 shelves filled with apples, pears, onions, squash and potatoes. I have been very careful to not let two items touch each other and so far no spoiling or problems. Good stable construction, easy to assemble and shelves easy to pull out and in.

The Orchard Rack was easy to assemble. I didn't give it a five star rating because some of the screws didn't bite into the soft wood very well and the runners that the drawers slide on bowed in the middle. I used some screws that I had on hand at home to make the repairs. The rack is in a cool area in the basement waiting for me to harvest my onions and potatoes. I am looking forward to filling it up with goodies from my first garden!

I've been gardening for years and have always had to rig ways to dry and store produce from the garden and orchard. This is perfect for both. Took about a half hour to put together, not difficult. What I like most about it is that I can see everything being stored at a glance, and can easily pull out drawers to check on ripening. I've been looking for this for a long time.

The "Orchard Rack" is a necessity for keeping produce fresh for a longer time. As a dedicated and serious cook, I purchase "mostly" organic produce and cook our meals from scratch. It's very important my vegetables are still of excellent quality when I go to prepare them. Amazing isn't it, how a seemingly simple solution can make such a huge difference.

I love the product but it needs some re-designing. The lattice is nailed from the bottom to the tray frame with flimsy tiny little nails. The first apple I put on the tray was heavy enough to push the nail out and the lattice to come of the frame. My husband then attached each lattice with small screws, 120 screws. It would make more sence to have the lattice nailed to the top of the tray frame.
Now that the trays hold I love the product.

I actually have two orchard racks. I put one atop the other and fastened them with bracing straps. I have to use a step stool to get to the top two shelves, but it's very strong and stable. I use it to store potatoes, onions, garlic, sweet potatoes and peanuts. (I use quarter-inch hardware cloth to keep the peanuts from going through the slats.

I bought this for my dad for Christmas. He is already making plans to buy another one to store his root vegetables from his ever expanding vegetable garden. Easy to assemble, sturdy, and able to hold a large amount of produce.

I am already using the orchard rack that I received last month from Gardner's Supply Company to store items such as potatoes, onions, squash, pumpkin, and grapefruit purchased from the local supermarket especially when there are sale items. I used to put the grapefruit in the refrigerator, immediately after purchase, but they would sometimes then get a bit dried out after a few days. Now, I put the grapefruit stored on the orchard rack in the fridge about a half a day prior to use, and they taste very fresh that way. But, the main reason for purchasing the orchard rack is that I have a grove of dwarf apple, peach, and plum trees in my back yard, and am looking foward to using the rack after next fall's harvest. So far, so good, and it has met my expectations. As recommended, I located the rack in a dark corner in my unheated basement, which maintains a ~55F temperature during the colder months, and the stored vegetables and fruits seem to be doing just fine. My only suggestion is that I would like to see the Gardner's website have more specific tips provided for storing fruits and vegetables using the orchard rack in the basement rather than the generic info provided that also applies to cold storage in refrigerators (or using outdoor root cellars).

My first reaction upon opening the carton was to the odor. It smelled like Pinesol disinfectant. I'd read this in a review so I wasn't entirely surprised. And after I put it into the basement the smell disappeared. It is pretty substantial. The corner of one of the tray/drawers was slightly chipped but that shouldn't affect the use. I was surprised at how much space there is between the trays. That should make it possible to store larger vegetables like squash as well as a couple of layers of onions or turnips per tray. [...]And I'd like to see a companion product of American made wooden bins for storage in the root cellar, too. Come on folks, made in America is a good thing! Don't get me wrong - I am interested in owning things from other cultures, but they should be representative of that culture and we should produce the rest here!

This rack was a snap to assemble--all of about 10 minutes. And the drawer racks work well--slide in and out easily despite there being no rollers or other hardware (which, of course, made the assembly so easy).

We recently purchased this Orchard box to store Potatoes and Spaghetti Squash. It holds close to our whole harvest for the summer and gets the vegetables off of the floor. It went together easily and I am pleased with the product. My only negative is that sometimes the drawers hit the support on the back and don't push in all the way, but this in minor. If you are looking for a way to store your harvest, this is it.

This substantial rack is a great addition to the pantry. Herbs dry nicely on the top between sheets of parchment. The drawers are roomy enough for squashes, and hold many pounds of onions, potatoes and garlic. I'll buy another to store the bounty of apples.

I put it together by myself with no problem, and though the drawers slid easily, I rubbed candle wax on the bottom of each, to make them slide even easier. The wood makes my fruit cellar smell even better, and it has tons of room. I currently have 50 lbs. of potatoes and 50 lbs. of onions, and I still have 2 empty drawers to fill. This shelf system for storing squash and onions is just what the doctor ordered. It's the kind of thing I'd make for myself if it didn't have a bazillion pieces. This came with the two sides and shelves fully assembled all we had to do was screw in the cross pieces for the top and bottom and cross bracing on the back put in the shelves and it was ready to use. The description called the wood rough, but I found it smoother than promised (a plus). Of course it remains to be seen if I have put the right crops on it and stored them in the right spot, but for sure it's a great product.

We really like this orchard rack. It's very well made although my husband had a bit of trouble following part of the directions (where the wood criss-crosses on the back). I am quite excited about this product, as we really needed some sort of place to store our potatoes and winter squash that allowed air circulation around them.

The only negative we've experienced is that the wood is SO soft that many of the screws stripped it out when my husband put it together using an electric screwdriver.
