Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

This is a very attractive compost keeper, but the handle could be a little looser or made differently. It is very hard to turn (you need both hands to turn it) and it feels a little flimsy. I like that the lid has holes, but it also just sits on top--nothing to hold it on with. I wish that this pot had a filter and a different handle. Also if the lid was lockable, I would give this a 5 out of 5. But it is great if you are looking for aesthetic value and storage capability.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Very nice looking product, however, due to the shape of it, bio bags are REALLY difficult to use with this particular product. I almost always end up tearing the bag due to the fact that I have to really tug it out of the crock. If I don't use the bags, the scraps in the crock often get jammed trying to exit the too small mouth.

after losing our home to fire, we are starting all over again-I thought this would match our kitchen colors and work for the many scraps we have-I couldn't beleive what I saw when I opened the package-what a gorgeous piece of pottery--I will use it for compost, as it is intended, but it seems much too pretty for that purpose

Beautiful but lacking practicality

Pros:

Cons:
Mouth too small
Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Very beautiful and nicer then the plastic ice cream pail I was using. However, in conjunction with the Biobags there is a small isssue. You must be certain not to fill too full. The mouth of the jar is too narrow to easily get the bag out and if you pull too hard it rips. It is easy to wash out though so you can go bagless. Carbon filter works well as long as you do not let it go too long.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Fits on my counter. Controls odor. Sturdy. Attractive. There were several chips in the glaze on the outside that had been coated with a "near matching" glaze repair. These don't really match and sort of detract from the normal glazing pattern making them noticeable. Otherwise, great product.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Love this compost crock so much we bought a second one. BUT the reason we had to by a second one was because the handle is a little flimsy and when it came off one day, the crock fell over and shattered. It's also a little expensive but I guess we felt it was worth it-it can be left out on the counter without uglying up your kitchen space, and the charcoal filters work great at stopping odors. Overall we love it and have even purchased one for my mother-in-law who composts like a mad woman!

I use this product for kitchen scraps then take to my compost bin. It's pretty enough to leave on my counter top. I had a hard time pulling the bag out because it was full and the bag tore. I won't let the bag get too full. The picture is deceiving because it shows the container very full.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

This crock is a big step up for me after years of collecting my kitchen scraps for the compost heap in plastic containers or colanders in the sink. I especially like the filtering system. No smell so far. Capacity is perfect unless you want trouble with insects and smell. My only issue is the inward bevel at the top of the crock. Makes it a little difficult to dump. A straight up and down design is probably better but I think a little trouble is worth the attractiveness of this crock. I just wish it came in different colors since my kitchen accent color is burnt orange - not green.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

The crock is gorgeous and it works. But because of its shape, it is hard to pull the bags out smoothly. The opening is narrower than the container. Kitchen scraps settle into the shape of the container and when I try to pull the bags out, it is a struggle and sometimes they tear. I ordered this particular crock because I loved the look but also because it has the capacity to fit more in it. But if I fill it more than half way, it is very difficult to get out. This defeats the purpose of buying the larger container.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I have hard counters (quartz) and had to laugh at the comment about not recommending to you if you have hard counters.. Also, yes the bottom is unglazed, all Ceramics are, easy fix, hot glue a cork circle, or use felt pads. As far as scraps getting caught goes, I use the biodegradeable bags, you get a hundred to a package I believe, could be wrong about that, but you get a LOT, so this is not a problem for me. One bag lasts me a week, sometimes 2, but usually I just use one. The bags are large, so I just tie them around the top, (Into a knot and hide at the back) I imagine a large rubber band would work as well. I have told everyone I know about this pail..we love it!

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

The compost crock looks just like in the photo and is lovely on the counter, keeps odors in and is an ample size for daily use. Unfortunately, and I should have realized this before ordering, the shape makes it an exercise in dexterity and strength to manoever the compost bag (once packed full of kitchen scraps) out of the crock :o(. But I still love it...if they'd just make the top the same width as the largest circumfrence within the crock. If you plan on using without a compost bag you're ok, but then you have to clean it each time and lug outside.

By meauVerified Purchaser from Sacramento, California on 1/12/2011

Cons:
Thin flimsy handle
Best Uses:
Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I like its attractiveness but the relatively small mouth makes it a bit difficult to put kitchen scraps in as well as dump them out. The thin handle also makes emptying it a bit clumsy if it's full and heavy. I've almost dropped it a couple of times. Overall, it serves its function but I'd like it better if it was a larger size overall with a sturdier handle.

Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Looks great, so you can keep in on the counter. It has 3 drawbacks, however. First, the bottom is unglazed, and the ceramic is quite rough, much like the ceramic used in some knife sharpeners. I was afraid that it might damage my countertops, so I ran a thin layer of silicone caulk around the rim, which did the trick. Second, as others have noted scraps tend to hang up under the top lip when emptying. Finally and most problematic is its fragility. Within a month after purchase the lid slipped out of my hand from a few inches above the crock and cracked the crock's rim. I glued the piece back on, and it was barely visible. Today, my son dropped the lid to the counter from less than a foot, and it shattered. No repair this time. As is only lasted about 6 months, I can't recommend it for anyone with hard counters.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Along with the compost crock, I also purchased the bio-degradable liners. I love the ease of filling it with kitchen scraps, coffee grinds, etc. and then simply carry entire bag out to our garden composter. I don't think it could be bigger and still look so attractive on your counter, but it fills up very quickly at our house. I love that I am also reducing my footprint, and giving back to the earth. Great product.

Looks pretty but poor design
By KayVerified Reviewer from North Kansas City, MO on 12/17/2010
Pros:
Attractive, Capacity
Cons:
Impractical, Poor design
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Ecological Waste Disposal, Fertilizer Production, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

The container is wider than the opening at the top. When full it is very difficult to get the contents out without something to help pull it out. As most people have said, it looks very nice on my counter but it isn't very practical because of the design.

This compost crock replaced a previous one and is far superior to it. The crock is a good size and easy to clean. The glazed interior does not retain scraps or odors if rinsed off. When it needs washing just a little detergent does the job.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Used on kitchen counter. Came with crackling around the handles in the glaze which has spread very quickly. It really looks nice on the counter, not like a composter at all. However, biobags catch on the inner lip where the lid sits, and often can't even get the bag out without it ripping. I will be returning it, first for the design issue, second for the crackling in the glaze. Probably fine if you weren't using biobags, but I don't want to deal with the mess!

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I keep this composter on the kitchen counter. It is attractive and does not emit any odor using the filters. The only thing that was disappointing was the first time I went to use the handle it broke a piece of the composter where the handle is attached. I've taken the handle off but am disappointed in the quality of the ceramic.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

We have this crock sitting on the kitchen counter and dump all our kitchen scraps and coffee grounds into it. The only problem I have is that we used a compost pail liner bag, and since the body of the crock is wider than the mouth, the bag gets filled in the middle, and then can sometimes be hard to remove witout making a mess. Otherwise works well. Carbon filter keeps the odors down, and I've had no other concerns.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I bought this compost pail hoping to have an attractive, odorless place to store kitchen scraps on their way to the compost pile. Unfortunately the lid was poorly made and would not sit tightly on the pail. No matter what orientation I used the lid would rock back and forth. This left a gap and in no time my compost pail had attracted fruit flies and other bugs. Will be returning this item.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I received this as a gift a number of years ago, after using a crummy plastic container for kitchen compost. Big improvement! This looks nice on the counter, and it doesn't smell. At first I used the charcoal filters, but to be honest after the first few filters I stopped bothering. It really doesn't need one, and the filters get mildewed so are kind of more trouble than they're worth. Even without a filter we don't notice any smell. (Also we generate a lot of kitchen scraps, so we empty it every day/every other day usually.)

The only drawback, I would say, is if you aren't careful it is breakable, especially when washing -- but i's ceramic, so that's to be expected. We broke the lid the first time a year or so ago and glued it back together. Then it broke again this week, and I sent an e-mail to Gardener's Supply asking about buying a replacement. I got a call from the company (on a Sunday!) to let me know I could order a replacement, and asking if I wanted to include it on the order I'd placed a couple days earlier, thus saving me $$ on shipping. I order a lot online, and this is the most impressed I've ever been with a company customer service! So glad I don't have to replace the entire item because of a broken lid -- I heartily recommend both the product and the company!

I just love this counter top crock, not only is it attractive, but so useful for myself, son and my 82 year old father. It is so easy for dad to lift the lid and add all the kitchen scraps and coffee grinds daily. He loves gardening and being able to have a compost pile is fantastic. I have checked around and your company had the best selection and prices for the ceramic crocks. Love your products and look forward to purchasing more in the future.

This crock looks great in my kitchen and NEVER releases an odor. The only problem is, we've dropped the lid on our granite counter top several times and have had to superglue it back together. I'm ordering another one just so we can have a new lid! They should send 2 lids with each pot!!!
