Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

Easy to store little kitchen scraps when you don't have the time to run them up to your compost bin, it has enticed me and my family to start composting! However, I do also reccomend 'BioBags' to go with it, they are good for the kitchen composter because it saves you a good wash!

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

we have had this pail for less than a year and there are now several holes in the bottom and a couple on the sides. we put a plate underneath it to catch the leaks after it got the first couple holes, so we could continue using it, but even that isn't holding it now. all it does is sit on the counter so i am thinking the holes are because it is low quality metal and the compost is eating away at it? whatever the reason--it sure isn't doing the earth any favors if you need to throw out and replace a metal bucket every year.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

This is great - we've been using it for about a month now, no issues whatsoever. It looks nice sitting out on the counter & since space is at a premium here in Brooklyn, NY the holding capacity is perfect. My husband and I manage to fill it up during the week and I add it to my compost bin on the weeekends - no odors, no fruit flies, easy empty and clean.
I prefer this simple, sturdy pail to the ceramic versions out there! Super practical, no fuss and looks great.

Great Bug-Free Stainless Compost Bucket

Pros:

Cons:
Spot Welded Handle
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Food Liquids, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

Nice stainless bucket at nice price. No corrosion problems yet (bucket is emptied every other day, rinsed after each emptying). Lid seals well enough to keep out pharaoh (aka: sugar, [*]) ants. Only complaint is spot-welded handles (on bucket & lid). The lid has a screw-on handle, but the screw-on post is spot welded. Welding not only increases corrosion susceptibility, but is not as easily repaired as a screw.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I like the wide mouth on the pail for using with bio-bags, it's easy to remove the bag when full. I also have one of the pretty ceramic pails but the mouth of that pail is smaller and harder to get out a full bag of kitchen waste. However this pail does not come with a filter (most others do) and needs to be emptied more often, esp. with onion peels or shrimp casings smelling up the kitchen every time you take the lid off.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I keep the pail under the sink and it contains odors well. It is perfect for one week's capacity; I empty it into the compost pile on weekends. Like other users I have noticed a bit of premature rusting or blackening inside the pail, but it is still perfectly functional. I actually purchased this with the bags, which I would not recommend as the bags leak and take forever to decompose (see my separate review for the pail+bags combo). I wanted to review the pail on its own to reflect that I do like the pail and recommend it, despite not liking the bags.

It looks great and functions well...except for the small corrosion holes that developed within a few months of use. Seeing daylight through your compost pail isn't good. Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I've had this compost pail(s) for a little over a year now and I love it, except for one recurring problem. It is attractive, holds a fair quantity of compost scraps, and with the handle is easily tranported to the composter. The problem is that after a relatively short time corrosion spots start to appear and pinholes develope (creating leakage problems) I am on my forth pail now and this one needs to be replaced too. Gardener's Supply has been great in honoring their guarrantee and has cheerfully sent replacements. I am puzzled that I don't see more people having this problem, because I would like to see some improvement in the quality of the steel to resolve this issue.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

Our garbage pickup has changed at the first of the year where we now have to compost with the leaves, etc. all of the food wastes which come from the kitchen and that includes paper soiled with food, like paper towels, pizza boxes... They sent around a 2 gallon plastic green food container which was enormous and the lid was attached and frankly I was not sure it would go into the dishwasher. This stainless steel pail is smaller, goes into the dishwasher and holds a days worth of all from the kitchen. The only problem I am having is that the handle is close to the lid and there is no way to pick up the lid with sticky fingers without depositing the sticky all over the lid and handle. Just means one more thing for me to wipe up at the end of a meal. Frankly I am not sure what would make the lid easier to pick up. With this recessed lid, finding a spot in the dishwasher is easy... so not sure fixing it is worthwhile. Just something to know.

I have this compost pail next to my sink on top of my counter where it is easy to access and put coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scraps, and any other compostible material in. I purchased this compost pail about a year ago, and I also purchased one for work. We still use both every day, and they are amazing. You can't go wrong with this one!

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

This compost bucket is just the right size to sit on the sink for kitchen scraps. Easy to empty and easy to clean. It would be 5-star except - for the rust! This item is supposed to be stainless steel, but apparently whatever attaches the handle to the lid is not. After only a short while, a ring of rust has appeared on the lid at the base of the knob. This is not acceptable in an item that should last indefinitely. I plan to complain and return it to Gardener Supply. Be forewarned. This should not cost [$].

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

We keep our compost pail close to the kitchen sink. I find it lovely to look at (while the blurb calls it perfect for today's modern kitchen, I think it fits in well with more rustic, low tech and homemade kitchens as well); and since the pail has no lip, it's very easy to clean, while at the same time the lid is tight-fitting and keeps in odors when it's closed.

We previously had a ceramic compost crock, which we thought would work well, but the lip inside it made it harder to clean, and being ceramic it was heavier - and more breakable - both of which added to the difficulty of cleaning it, and thus discouraged us from actually using it.

By xsaVerified Purchaser from Oakland, CA on 9/3/2010
Pros:
Attractive, Capacity
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

We keep this on the kitchen counter for fruit and vegetable scraps. It holds a ton of scraps but doesn't take up too much space. It's very nice looking and doesn't smell at all.

We did have a problem with the metal lid. The metal lid clashes against the metal bucket and makes a really loud ugly clanging sound. I almost had to return the bucket because I couldn't stand it!

Then I figured out that it all it needs is a rubber gasket. I got a large rubber band (about 5" in diameter and 1/2" wide) and put it around the lip of the lid. Now the lid fits perfectly and smoothly into the bucket. It gives a nice seal and the lid doesn't make any sound.

By adding this rubber band we changed this from a low quality to a high quality product. The company should add this gasket itself!

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I use this pail to collect my kitchen scraps before I take them out to compost. The pail not only looks nice on my counter, but surprisingly there's no smell and no fruit flies.

Recently I put some meat scraps in my pail along with my normal veggie scraps, and forgot to empty it before I left for a week-long vacation. I was so surprised to come home and find that there were NO fruit flies and NO smell. When I opened the pail I about fell over due to the stink, but the lid had completely contained it. The nonporous stainless steel also helped it begin composting nicely right there in the pail. And the best part? I just washed it out with soap and water and the smell was gone.

I would highly recommend this pail. It looks just as nice as I thought it would, but it has outperformed my expectations. I love this pail!

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

This pail looks attractive on the counter-top next to our under-mount stainless steel sink. The lid fits tightly to hold in odors, but we do empty it into the compost maker in the yard frequently. We would not expect to actually make compost on the kitchen counter--just collect kitchen scraps to take out to the compost maker. The pail rinses out so easily that there are no residual odors. It's more convenient and less expensive than using carbon filters to cover up odors. Sometimes, simpler really is better. We are vegetarians and have abundant compostable waste. We find that if we cut or tear citrus and avacado rinds into smallish pieces and crunch egg shells in one hand while dropping them into the pail, they break down faster and the pail holds more scrap. This product is worth the price.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I looked around for a long time for the simplest, large-capacity counter-top compost bucket. I knew I wanted stainless steel because it's so easy to disinfect. I've tried other buckets and had them fall apart, grow fly-babies, etc. A friend had this one in her kitchen and told me that despite it not having a fancy charcoal filter system, she found it to be odor-free and big enough to hold scraps from large cooking jobs.

The bucket has been great, and Gardner's Supply got it to us quickly. Just rinsing it and setting it out in the sun for 15 minutes gets rid of smells. Hooray!

This is a very attractive stainless steel bin I have sitting next to my prep counter. The lid started to rust and I emailed the company. The rep called that week and I said unless it starts to look unsightly I will live with it. I wanted to support the fact that the company is employee owned. Well, I finally called and asked for a replacement lid and it [...]. I love this bin and I love dealing with this company with courteous customer service and who STAND BEHIND what they sell!

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

We were really looking forward to using a compost pail that isn't plastic AND doesn't have one of those air filters. The filters never seemed to do much--plus they become a haven for fruit fly larvae in the heat of summer. This one really seeemed to fit the bill, but after only two weeks or so, we discovered a small pinhole leak in the bottom and compost liquid had leaked out all over the counter underneath the pail. Sorry to say that I'll be returning it.

We have had the stainless steel composter for at least 15 years or more and if you run it through the dishwasher, it looks like a new pail. Gardeners Supply is the only place I have seen them for sale and at around the same price we paid a long time ago.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

The City has a composting program, with which comes a rather unsightly green, plastic container we keep on the floor under the kitchen sink. With my back problem, I need something counter-top and this sleek, lightweight, unbreakable compost bucket fits the bill perfectly. It's not quite as stylish as the cobalt blue, ceramic one I'd previously bought from Gardener's Supply -- the cover of which my husband dropped and the bottom of which I'll now have to use as a planter. But it'll do the trick just fine.

I love this product. It has the best capacity for what I use it for...kitchen scraps. There's no time for it to stink up b/c it's small enough that it has to be emptied fairly frequently (at least in our house). It cleans easily and fits nicely in a tight space under the kitchen sink. I don't see the need for bags or a filter--just use it!

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

We have recycled coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable kitchen scraps by means of worm composting for more than 25 years. We used all types of compost pails to collect the scraps from used milk containers to expensive ceramic pails. The brushed stainless is the best yet. It looks nice, has a slim foot print for its volume and does the best to seal in odors of anything we've used. Why only 4 stars - after 6 weeks of use, a small ring of rust stain has developed (it polishes off) indicating possibly an inferior grade of stainless steel. We will have to see if it holds up over time.

Within 2 weeks, we noticed rust on the interior of the pail. Also, the weld on the knob is looking tarnished, and it may fall off soon. Pail made in India, probably with cheap quality stainless steel. A plastic, Folgers coffee can or two may be a cheaper alternative.

Looks great. Everything is made of stainless steel except for the screw holding the knob on the lid that started to rust the first time I washed it and now we have a pool of rust in the lid. The only drawback is that my husband's hands are naturally oily and he leaves fingerprints on the lid.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

We replaced a porcelain compost container with this. It is easier to clean and looks great on our counter. It is easy to empty in the outdoor compost bin. The one drawback is that the bottom is "sprung". It occasionally pops out with a loud band and needs to be pushed back in to sit flat on the counter. We empty it daily so odor is not a problem. But without a vented top, odor could build up unless emptied and rinsed daily.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I debated spending the extra $$ for a compost pail with a filter, but I think I made the right choice. If you use the biobags you need to empty the pail before the bag begins to degrade and leak, so there realy isn't time for odors to develop. I would tend to empty the filtered pail less often so they would need to be scrubbed clean and they are harder to clean than the smooth stainless.

The other reviews were very helpful in making my purchase. The only thing that I was worried about was that it wouldn't "blend in" on the counter. But that isn't the case. It has an unassuming place beside the sink; you don't really notice that it's there.

This pail is the best. I looked at the heavy ceramic pails - too heavy and too big for my small countertop. This pail can get heavy if you fill it to the brim but it's so easy to carry with the handle and easy to clean out. Should have bought it sooner.... just didn't want to pay more than a few bucks to store trash! So glad I bit the bullet and got this pail. It's a great keeper!!!

This pail holds quite a bit - now I can make the trip to the compost pile every 4-5 days instead of 4-5 TIMES a day! It looks great in my kitchen & its good looks are the only thing that finally convinced my husband to let me keep it out on the counter most of the time. Handle very useful for both myself and the kids to use. LOVE being able to pop it into the dishwasher. Also the "brushed" stainless steel means that it doesn't show all the fingerprints like some stainless.

Looks great on the counter. Holds alot. Easy to clean, no smell even after a few days of kitchen scrap collection. This does a good job--it keeps odors in check, it cleans easily, and looks okay (just not "sleek"). But one really needs to generate a lot of kitchen scraps to make the size really useful--I don't, and I'm a vegetarian. Would be better if about 2/3rds or 1/2 the size.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I bought this and 50 biobags as part of an advertised special and so far, I'm pleased with the results. We are on a well and septic system, so we have to compost everything rather than use a garbage disposal. The metal pail is clean, neat, the lid fits tightly and keeps most offensive odors out of the air (unless it is open and one has put the wrong sort of kitchen scraps into the bucket) and sits quietly in the corner on the counter. I've had it in the dishwasher and it holds up nicely, but as long as you use the bags the need to wash it is minimal.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

The older version was a much more well-made bucket. The top fit snuggly and easily and the stainless washed up well, including the daily wipedowns from water drips, etc., on the outside.

I use one on the kitchen counter and two rotating ones underneath the counter. The 2 I just purchased are inferior to the older one in that the tops are difficult to get on and off, since they don't fit exactly. Water stains do not come off easily. The stainless, especially the tops, look more like "brushed" stainless, and uneven at that, than the "satiny" stainless.

I would recommend this to a friend only with reservations.

My local co-op farm began accepting kitchen scraps because many of the members live in deed restricted neighborhoods that don't allow composting. Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I line the pail with used produce bags for easy clean out. When one gets full, I simply lift out the full bag and insert another used bag. I find that it will take about 3 days for me to fill the pail. Between the snug fit of the lid and the plastic bag liner, I do not get any odors.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

We use the convenient countertop compost pail to collect kitchen scraps, not to compost them. We carry ours out every day or two and empty it into the composter in the yard. Tight fitting lid prevents odors that haven't been cooking for more than a few days from seeping into the kitchen. Attractive, simple design fits our modern kitchen. It has worked better than any container we have tried to adapt to the purpose, and costs much less than the fancy ones with replacable carbon parts. If you empty if often, like any garbage pail, and keep it clean there are no odors to cover up with carbon.

This is the best kitchen countertop compost container ever! The lid fits well; it requires NO charcoal filters; there is no odor; it holds about a week's worth of kitchen scraps and coffee grounds; the handle is comfortable and makes it easy to dump, and it's so easy to clean. Most important is that we don't have to worry if we accidentally bang it at the composter, since it can't break! I would purchase this again without hesitation.

My sister gave us a stainless compost pail from your catalog several years ago. Ours is a little different from your current model (shiny, more like a traditional, old-fashioned pail). We use it everyday with the liners, and it is incredibly convenient! The lid prevents any odors from escaping, it never stains, it is easy to clean, and the handle makes it easy to take it out to the garden and bury the garbage. The liners enable us to simply grab the bag and toss the garbage into the hole we dig (right in the garden), and it all rots without our having to do a thing! Thanks for a great product!

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I've used it since the day I bought it which was about May '09. The only problem I have is it is rusting where the lid knob meets the lid. I don't let it sit in water so I think when I wash it some water is trapped and the piece holding the two together is now rusting. So far it hasn't fallen apart though.

This composting pail appeared to be just what I was looking for. A composting pail for our kitchen that is a durable material, dishwasher safe, easy to clean, would not absorb odors and easy to carry out to our outdoor composter. Everything is durable except the pull on top of the lid. It broke off the second day we used it. It is being returned!

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

The stainless steel makes this product very easy to clean; after disposing the waste into your compost and a quick cleaning, there is no staining and no residual odor. I really like this product, however the handle/knob on the lid is not attached well and UNLESS you are handy with repairing things I would not recommend this product. I repaired it by saudering it back together.

Best Purchase in a Long Time
By StoneVerified Purchaser from Baton Rouge, LA on 12/2/2009
Pros:
Attractive, Capacity, Odor Free, Tight Seal, Unbreakable
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I had a ceramic kitchen counter-top compost container, but the seal was not tight, which attracted fruit flies. The ridge under the top lip of the container was difficult to clean. Eventually, the top was dropped on the floor and broke. The brushed aluminum pail is a thousand times better for a number of reason, including a tight seal, attractive, no odor, more capacity, easy to clean, and will not break if dropped. I highly recommend this product.

After using 2 other types of kitchen compost containers, one made of plastic and the other made of copper, this is by far the best because it does not hold onto odors (after cleaning) and it's easy to clean due to its stainless steel composition.

Comments about Brushed Stainless Steel Compost Pail:

I really enjoyed this product, but after 2 years, the seam split in the dishwaser. Would have been a better unit if it had been a shaped single piece of stainless steal instead of a seamed piece.
