The filters were on my Christmas list and my husband and sister-in-law both bought me them. My compost pot is terrific and I get tons of great compost after I dump the pot in with leaves & grass clippings. The filters keep the smells away except in the hottest weather. Only complaint I have is that it gets mildow or mold on it, long before the 2 months of usage is up. I rinse with hot water and re-use.

The word "replacement" implies the compost pail came with a filter. It did not. Also there is no place in the lid to slip the filter. I gave the pail & replacement filters as a present to my daughter. The pail & filters were together so I assumed you could use them with the pail.

Unfortunately, my filter became moldy in the 2nd week, NOT at all as I had expected - not close to the expected 2 months! Also, the limited directions received on the package of refills, do NOT indicate (as you do above), that the filter can be washed and reused...I assumed that the moldy item needed to be thrown away. There was mold on both sides of filter, even though I empty the crock every other day. Since then, I am using the crock w/out a filter in the lid, and I have not detected any ordors.

i put considerable thought into the diameter i should buy; i guess they're offered in three sizes, none of which seemed to exactly match the lid of my ceramic kitchen composting pail. And there being no description of how the heck they stay up there, i thought i'd better get the just-barely-big-enough 4 1/2-inchers, rather than the obviously-too-small 3 1/2-inchers or the Oh-well-i'll-just-get-out-my-scissors-and-snip-them-down-to-size 5 1/2-inch ones. These turned out to be PERFECT: they don't fall down into the pail, yet they seem to cover 90% of the underside of the lid.
After just a couple months, the first one is starting to look a bit yucky, but there's still no odor from the pail. Still, i'm glad i bought multiple packages, to last me all year.

We tend to let our bucket fill up to touch the filter, and so stuff is usually growing on it. But that's good and bad: Bad in that it looks yucky. Good in that it is not inhibiting natural microbial action - a must for composting!
