Instructions for the Cedar Raised Bed
The Cedar Raised Bed includes the following:
- 2 69" Cedar Boards
- 2 55" Cedar Boards
- 4 Aluminum Corners
- 32 0.75" Phillips Screws
- 4 Corner Caps
Tools needed for assembly
- A Phillips screwdriver or a drill hammer
Step 1. Locate a level area on the ground that will recieve the appropriate amount of sunlight needed by your plants and prepare the ground for planting. Keep in mind that vegetables require lots of sun. To learn more about siting your bed, read the article on Location and Set-Up in the Kitchen Garden Plannner.
If you are installing the raised bed on a lawn, remove the sod and loosen the soil with a shovel or spade so that the plant roots will be able to penetrate to a depth of 6".
Step 2. Place the boards on their sides to form a rectangular bed and seat the ends into the four aluminum corners.
Make sure the boards are fully seated and level with the bottom of all four aluminum corners.
Step 3. Use the screws provided to connect the boards to the corners.
Step 4. Insert the black plastic corner caps into the top of each aluminum corner.
Note: If you are using the raised bed with the Ultimate Cold Frame, do not use the caps. Instead, place the steel posts of the cold frame into the bed corners.
Step 5. Fill the raised bed to the top edge with a mixture of garden soil and plenty of organic matter, such as compost. You may mix in other materials, such as peat and perlite to help aerate and retain moisture in the soil. To figure out how much soil and ammendments you need, use the Soil Calculator.
