My gardening style: I like to mix surprising plants with “the usual suspects.” This summer, our front garden features an 8-foot Chinese banana tree. In the fall, I dig it up and move it to the basement, where it goes dormant for the winter. Check out photos of my garden on Flickr.
My gardening inspiration: My grandparents started Riverside Greenhouses in Appleton, WI, and from them I inherited a love for plants. As a child, I loved running up and down the aisles of the greenhouse, all warm and fragrant with moist soil and vegetation.
Vegetables or flowers?: Flowers, for sure. Luckily, I have friends who are vegetable gardeners and will trade bouquets for salad greens.
Best gardening tip I ever got: Regular fertilizing and watering takes your garden from good to great.
My dirty secret: My pickup is a mess, and I'm known to drive around with a load of debris in the bed for weeks, even though the drop-off site is just 200 yards from my office.
When I'm not working: I am practicing my guitar, trying desperately to pick up where I left off in high school. Someday, I hope to be able to play a decent B-flat chord.
For a good cause: I am a mentor at King Street Center in Burlington, VT.
My other gig: During the gardening season, I spend three days a week as a gardener with Church Hill Landscapes.
