I use the thermometer to determine when to turn the compost (i.e. when the temperature drops); that keeps it "cooking." by keeping track of the total number of days when the pile is at 130 F or more I know when I can stop turning and go to curing, i.e. after 15 "hot" days, not necessarily consecutive.
The previous thermometer I had was identical but purchased elsewhere. Unfortunately after about 4 years the stem came free from the round top and the top could be turned independently of the stem which made it impossible to get an accurate temperature reading. I had to get rid of it. So when you use it, and the stem is stuck into the compost pile DO NOT TURN THE THERMOMETER BY ROTATING THE ROUND PART or it will break the solder joint.

Overall seems to be a good product but according to my other thermometers it reads the ambient temperature 4 degrees lower than the other termometers do.

We use this thermometer to monitor the internal temperature of large round bales of hay prior to and after putting them in the barn. This is a precaution to be sure they are safe from catching fire -- hay gets warmer after being baled because of bacteria and fungi activity that was on the grass prior to cutting.

Well made product, looks like it will last but time will tell. I haven't seen anything made in China that was "stainless" that didn't rust. Seems to work quickly and is plenty long enough to get down to the middle of the pile (for me).
The face, however, has a full scale from 0 to 220 degrees, 50% of which is not needed to measure compost temperature. If the range was better adjusted the numbers could be larger and easier to read. I have to put my reading glasses on to get an accurate number.

Just like the instant read thermometer I use in the kitchen. Not just for checking compost temp. Once our mountain freeze and thaw weather settles down I plan to use it to plant my veggie garden when the soil is right for the particular plant. I made a hoop house over my raised boxes to speed things up. This thermometer will be a huge help in growing my food crops!
