Factory Second Ultimate Cold Frame

Cold Frame Extends the Growing Season
Note: We are offering this cold frame at a reduced price because it did not pass our quality inspection. Due to a manufacturing error, the ties that are intended to hold the rolled-up doors and vents were improperly attached. Therefore, there is no way to secure the rolled-up greenhouse cover panels to allow ventilation. This defect will not affect the functionality of the unit as a season-extending cold frame to protect plants against chilly temperatures; however, because the vents won't stay rolled up, you'll need to remove the entire cold frame in warm weather. No grommets for stakes. To secure cold frame to the ground, you must push stakes through fabric. Sold as is.
- Start gardening earlier and extend the harvest in fall
- Woven poly cover has roll-up vents and insect netting
- Factory second; no ties to hold roll-up doors and vents; no grommets for stakes
Nurture plants in a warm, stable environment during wet and windy spring weather. Start seeds earlier, harden off indoor-growing seedlings, and extend the growing season into fall, too. This cold frame is a generous 71" L x 56" W with a peaked 36" roof that gives plants plenty of headroom. There's a large access door with two-way zipper on each side, and a roll-up vent at each end for good air circulation. Rustproof powder-coated steel frame and polyethylene cover. Insect netting covers doors and vents. Includes anchoring stakes. Raised bed not included.
- Powder-coated steel frame
- Imported woven polyethylene fabric
- 71" L x 56" W x 36" H

I have had a "first quality" one for a few years and have really liked it. I figure I can work around the "seconds" issues. It is great for late season protection as well as protecting early plantings.
I got this to cover a very small goldfish pond for the winter. The pond has an aquarium heater in it.
This works perfectly!! to contain the warm, moist air and to prevent loss of the water's heat.
It creates such a warm humid climate that I am storing some of my delicate epiphytic plants inside there as well.
The fit was exactly right for this use. And it's not unsightly, as last year's plastic wrap was.
- Easy to build
- Works well
- Little flimsy
This cold frame was well worth it due to the price the factory defaults do not greatly impair the functionality. The design fits well over my raised beds which were 4 by eights. I found that the bedding frame holds the frame down.
The frame felt flimisy when constructing it but appeared to gain some structural integrity after complete built. I would give more insight into the quality of this product after having used it for a year or two.
While I think a factory second should have a larger price reduction than $20, this is simply the best product on the market for winter gardening. That is kinda sad, so I implore someone to make an improved version that I'd happily pay more than double for--IF it was sturdier, better made, etc.
Others have complained that this model is less sturdy than the previous one, but I found it not terribly so and actually easier to assemble. I was not so concerned about the zipper flaps not having ties, as I am sure I can attach velcro or ties myself. The other flaw, the lack of stakes or grommets for securing to the ground, is also of little consequence because the holes on the last model all tore and the stakes rusted, so I prefer using stones to secure the bottom.
Bottom line, if you are not a DIY expert and don't want to contruct hoop houses, this is currently the best way to winter garden. The previous model held up under 3 ft of snow, and I am using it for the fourth winter.
