    Great Idea - Needs Improvement

    By NS_Gardener

    Pros

      Cons

      • Clogs easily
      • Hard To Clean Out Debris

      Best Uses

The halos themselves are well-made but need to be at least 3" wider with holes in the bottom dish as well as longer feet. The center hole needs to be larger - a quart sized transplant doesn't fit. The longer feet could deliver water farther to deeper roots and would lend stability. My raised bed soil is compost/perlite/loam is friable and never "hardens" from dryness so the scant 4" legs are nearly pointless. I buried my halos to soil level which helps some. And, should soil or debris get into the dish its nearly impossible to remove. Half wzy through the summer I'm strggling with these constantly shoving a coat hanger down the legs to unclog them and using shim sticks to clean. The object should not be slow water soak to the roots but merely getting water down to the roots. I bought 33 so over winter I'll be trying to figure out how to make them more efficient to use...$150.00 is a bit much to toss in the garbage.

I make the holes in the bottom larger and it works fine. With enlarged holes, I would give it 5 stars!

          Best Uses

I'm using these tomato halos in combination with red plastic mulch, tomato ladders and irrigation drip lines under the mulch. These halos allow me to easily apply compost tea. The lack of a 5 star rating is due to the tomato ladder's support depth. The halo prevents the ladder's supports from stabbing into the earth more than maybe two inches. It's relying on the dirt filled in the center of the halo for support. This may not be an issue as the tomato's roots grow, but I'll have to wait and see.

Fit into the Stacking Tomato Ladders

This works GREAT with the Stacking Tomato Ladders. The drainage holes are too big for "drip watering". However, when I put about an inch of soil in the ring this slows the drainage.

I had used the cheap plastic mulch/weed blockers for my tomato plants previously. Only lasted one or two seasons and did not allow for the ladders or provide good protection for tender plants. Very pleased with these halos which are durable and can be just cleaned and stored after each season. Allows for adding fertilizer without worrying as it is released to the root.

Have had others which were paper thin and would tear easily. These are hard plastic and sturdy.
Well designed and very practical. Only bought 3 but will be buying some more.

These halos are made from a heavy duty plastic that will withstand many years of use. We've placed them in a raised bed using a Florida weave system (instead of individual tomato cages). Great design and price.

                                      Best Uses

These are very heavy duty. I used the old thin plastic ones many years ago and ditched them as they were not worth the aggravation of planting in them. Love how you put soil in the center and then plant, giving extra root space. Easy to water as you can dump all the water in at once and it seeps in slowly. I bought 2 sets and will buy more next year for all my seedlings. I do wish I could use standard tomato cages. The placement of the holes make it so you have to buy the 3 prong tomato ladders.
